The show averages 150 entries each year and is one of the largest shows featuring antique and classic wooden boats. Some of the countryʼs finest boats call the beautiful Les Cheneaux Islands home. Most of these boats are used daily during the summer months as a primary mode of transportation to and from the cottages dotting the areaʼs 36 sheltered islands. Les Cheneaux has a rich heritage in boat building and repair. Our craftsmen continue to offer some of the finest restoration and repair services available. Entries in the boat show arrive each August from as far as California and Florida and include dinghies, rowboats, canoes, launches, sailboats, utilities, runabouts, large cruisers, racers and classic glass. The Antique Wooden Boat Show is sponsored by the Les Cheneaux Historical Association, in cooperation with Mertaugh Boat Works, Hessel Harbor Association and the Hessel Marina. The Historical Association uses the proceeds from this event, along with other contributions, to maintain and enhance the Historical and Maritime Museums, both of which are located in nearby Cedarville. Photo courtesy of Hagerty Insurance Co. This year for the first time we will be showcasing a specific marque and/or model. In keeping with our Les Cheneaux history of having the first Chris-Craft dealership and also being an early fishing resort community; the Chris-Craft Sportsman will be featured. Chris-Craft built their first Sportsman Be sure to stop by the museums while attending the Antique Wooden Boat Show and relive the rich history of our area. Festival of Arts models in 1937 and 1938 when the 15.5 foot Deluxe Runabout and the 24 foot Utility could be ordered without a stern seat for improved movement around the engine box when fishing. This model designation was eventually used with over 40 different boats in the Chris-Craft fleet. Three Sportsman models: a 14 foot Kit Boat, the 17 foot, and 22 foot Post War Utilities had production figures in excess of 2000 each. We will have a special award for these boats; so if you have a Chris-Craft Sportsman, please consider bringing it to Hessel this year. Held in conjunction with the Antique Wooden Boat Show is the Festival of Arts. Artists display and sell a variety of artwork, including photographs, paintings, pottery, stained glass, textiles and jewelry. Around 70 of the midwestʼs finest artists participate in this juried show. 3/28/14 4:34 PM
