INTRODUCTORY & INTERVENTION WORKSHOP Sept 19 and 20, 2016 9am-3pm Johnson Geo Centre 175 Signal Hill Road St. John’s, NL Day 1 Schedule Introductory Workshop 9 – 1015am What is ASD? – Interventions, Outcomes and Research The Development of Referencing and Regulation in Typical Children and Children with ASD 10:15-1030am Break What can the Reference and Regulate program do for a child with ASD? Everyone on the planet wants to be seen and heard, but how do you see and hear a child with autism? This workshop will help you see what is going on inside the child, under their confusing and often, challenging behaviours. As you develop your understanding of Autism Spectrum Disorder and how that affects a child, you can come along side them in new ways. When you begin to relate to them, at their level of development, you can help them grow into the next stage, and the next. We have seen children with ASD grow in ways that you might not be able to imagine…but ways that we have seen. We will introduce you to that vision. What will the R&R Introductory Workshop teach? § § § § § § Discussion of research and clinical experience to better understand define core deficits in ASD The development of referencing and social cognition in typical children and the remediation of these skills in children with ASD including the development of eye contact, gaze following, joint attention, reciprocal referencing in conversations and peer interactions Social referencing as a pivotal and prerequisite skill for later developing language and peer interactions The development of regulation from initial adaptations to the later development of self regulation Research, theory and practice in Behavioural vs. Attachment/Developmental Parenting and Intervention Videos of activities and hands on practice with activities for each stage of intervention.
