New Twingo is the product of a desire for fusion, combining the best of the values which made original Twingo such a success with innovation and the cutting-edge modernity of Renault today. Press Contact : Mike Gale - Communications - Renault UK +0044 (0)1923 697653 mike.gale@renault.co.uk New Twingo is fresh and exciting with a fun, funky design. A cheery urban citizen, in tune with its times, Twingo gains a new, softer, cheerful front end, reflecting the dynamic, mischievous spirit that made the first Twingo such a success. It marks a return to the original spirit of Twingo nd states Renault’s new visual identify. With its own unique character, New Twingo is out to dispel the gloom of everyday life. Thanks to its curvy lines, pop art design, and humorous, playful looks, New Twingo expresses the joy of living… and driving! In the great tradition of style exercise, Renault has offered the four the opportunity to express their vision of the Cabinet of Curiosities through an installation in the New Twingo cabin. Four artists - four nationalities and four artistic disciplines - with “twinguesque” genes express their view of the world: joyous, optimistic, clever and bold, just like the compact city car. Renault is giving the main artistic disciplines – fashion, music, design, cooking –an opportunity to express themselves in a bright and original environment: by making over the interior of New Twingo. The line up features: French fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, a man of multiple talents, Italian chef Davide Scabin renowned for his creative cooking, UK singer Nicola Roberts, queen of the charts, pragmatic German designer, Nils Holger Moormann, who finds new uses for everyday objects. Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo 2 3 Biography Biography Jean-Charles de Castelbajac French fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac is an emblematic French designer both in his designs and his polymorphous creations. His inspiration comes from myriad sources in his bright, sparkling, playful universe and he has revolutionised the world of art and fashion through his creations and his influences from the world of pop and rock. Garments made from recycled fabrics, warm and snug coats, ponchos built for two, graffiti dresses, cartoon pullovers. His designs stem from a unique new universe. A multi-talented artiste, whose first love is still fashion, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac was soon picked up by the press with his first cover of ELLE magazine and leading article of WWD which described him as a « Courrèges of the 1970s ». Within the next decade, he had collaborated with Loulou Picasso, Ben, Gérard Garouste, Hervé Di Rosa and his close influences included Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat. The pope Jean-Paul II told him in 1997: « You have used colour like the adhesive of faith » when he was selected as the official designer for the 1997 Catholic celebration World Youth Days, held in Paris, for which he created the Pope’s vestments and apparel for the 5,000 young people at the event. Many young artistes, largely from the world of music, voiced their appreciation of the talented designer: Madonna, Kanye West, Lady Gaga, Beth Ditto… Even the world of hip-hop recognised him as a creator of the young generation, christening him JC/DC. During the years 2000 all of his collections were crowned with success. It was then that Jean-Charles de Castelbajac launched his inspired brainwave, inventing the concept of « Lowcost Luxury » - an exceptional design at a price accessible to all, thus targeting a large, discerning, target audience. From this was born his « second line », JC/DC, his alias. Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo 4 5 «Twingo 55 FBG» by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac Playfully imaginative but always elegant, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac casts the eye of a « Republican artist » on New Twingo inventing for it a Presidential destiny… whereby Twingo, that most democratic of cars, assumes the mantle of the Republic… The roll-call (the electoral roll of course) includes period furniture, candelabras and polished parquet flooring. A nod to the sumptuous luxury of the Elysées, complemented by the matt black bodyshell. Very rock ‘n roll. « Our generation demands a new low-cost luxury. We have to reconcile creativity and democracy. » « It should be a cast-iron rule for all candidates in the Presidential elections that they have to travel in a Presidential Twingo. » Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo 6 7 « Twingo 55 FBG » « Twingo 55 FBG » by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac 8 9 Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo « Twingo 55 FBG » « Twingo 55 FBG » by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac 10 11 Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo Biography Biography Nicola Roberts British singer A young British singer, who, after taking part in the television programme « Popstars », was one fifth of the successful girl band, Girls Aloud. Nowadays Nicola Roberts is pursuing a solo career as a singer. Writing songs, says Nicola Roberts, has not been, as so many artists claim before her, « a therapy ». “It’s not like I haven’t been through all these emotions before,” she says. “I’ve been living with them for years.” The process of writing and recording her debut album « Cinderella’s Eyes », released last September is a new step in the career of the singer. Nicola’s penchant for the unexpected is clearly apparent on a debut solo album 18 months in the making. Thanks to some surprising collaborations with producers like Diplo, Metronomy, Dimitri and Dragonette, it’s as fresh as anything else you’ll hear this year, a riot of colossal pop melodies, underground sounds, singing, rapping, shouting and remarkable honesty. So Nicola Roberts knows exactly who she is, and very soon so will everyone else. Those who fell in love with the audacious, funny, inventive pop records Nicola made over four albums with Girls Aloud will find plenty to get their teeth into on this new album, and for everyone else there’s a whole new Nicola bursting out of these frank and fearless pop songs. “If music makes you feel good, regardless of whether it’s Cascada or MIA, you like it, and that’s always right,” she says. “If there’s one thing I’ve learned from all of this it’s that there should never be any rules with music.” Nicola Roberts also wants to express her creativity in different fields. In 2008, she launched her own range of make-up and is also very involved in the world of British fashion. In 2011, Nicola Roberts really has something to smile about. A recording studio evoking her latest album, Cinderella’s Eyes, clothes and make-up, coffee machine… New Twingo is transformed into the all-purpose car-living space of a British « working girl ». But one who is far from run of the mill. « In my New Twingo Cabinet of Curiosities, as in my latest album, I have strived to blend my dreams and emotions with my personal, very defined vision of reality.» Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo 14 15 «Twingo Goes Pop» «Twingo Goes Pop» by Nicola Roberts by Nicola Roberts 16 17 Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo «Twingo Goes Pop» «Twingo Goes Pop» by Nicola Roberts by Nicola Roberts 18 19 Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo «Twingo Goes Pop» «Twingo Goes Pop» by Nicola Roberts by Nicola Roberts 20 21 Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo Biography Biography Davide Scabin Italian chef As far as international critics are concerned, Davide Scabin is a supremely talented professionnal. For over 20 years he has been inventing and offering new gastronomical dishes, combining top quality with innovation, both in the domain of style and in the blend of tastes and ingredients. The latter is never left to chance, but is the fruit of long consideration, followed by meticulous execution and an almost obsessive precision. Evolving from the extremes of the senses and ergonomics, as well as the functional character of food, Davide Scabin infuses new life into traditional ingredients, offering an unexpected vision, evocative and emotional. He astonishes his guests’ palates with sensations which are simultaneously playful and conceptual; which delight the mind and arouse all the senses. At the avant-garde of « art and food design », Davide Scabin has invented a new approach to the preparation of dishes. Unique recipes are born of long hours of research and experimentation, not only with the raw materials, but also with texture, form, temperature – even the waiting time before the dish is served. His resolutely conceptual approach is fundamental to the harmony of elements which compose the emotional background linked to the food : according to Scabin himself, this approach is essential in order to guarantee the identical reproduction of a dish in order that it may always attain the same pinnacle of perfection and offer the same sensory experiences as the original dish. DAVIDE SCABIN, GASTRONOMICAL DESIGNER AND TASTE CREATOR For Davide Scabin, pioneer of conceptual Italian cuisine, a chef’s approach is similar to that of a designer : working from a base of taste and certain characteristics such as ergonomics and functionality, the chef marries the different elements of the dish. From a fusion of raw materials and an idea is born an object which is both attractive to the eye and the palate. Davide Scabin has no qualms in proclaiming a parallel between individualised haute cuisine and industrial mass production. Davide Scabin was born in Rivoli (Turin) on 9 September 1965. Aged 45, he has already spent 30 years wielding pots and pans. In 2002, he installed himself at the « Castello di Rivoli », where the Museum of Modern Art is situated: Combal.zero was born. Although he is constantly innovating, Scabin’s inspiration and fantasy are built on solid technical bases. His dishes, culinary works of art, are dedicated to pleasure in new forms, on new occasions, to experimenting with new cooking techniques and ranges. But the game plan is always the same one: to bring joy and delight to the palate. Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo 22 23 «Scabin Pasta Twingo» by Davide Scabin Davide Scabin, like all Italians, loves a « Bella Macchina ». In the cabin of the New Twingo Davide Scabin draws up a detailed inventory of all the components of Italian cuisine with, as a centrepoint for this world of emotions, that essential: Pasta. He then offers us, in a 3D video, his vision : conceptual and refined yet with his cuisine at its heart. « For me, the car is like cooking. It is a discovery, a movement, a journey to other people. » « I see New Twingo as a manifesto, an explosion which expresses the essential values of my work. It is the opposite of standing still like New Twingo. » Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo 24 25 «Scabin Pasta Twingo» «Scabin Pasta Twingo» by Davide Scabin by Davide Scabin 26 27 Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo «Scabin Pasta Twingo» «Scabin Pasta Twingo» by Davide Scabin by Davide Scabin 28 29 Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo Biography Biography Nils Holger Moormann German designer Since 1982, Nils Holger Moormann, a self-taught follower of the school of « New German Design », has produced and marketed the work of young, as yet unknown, designers. Simplicity, intelligence and innovation are the basic principles to which the works conform. They stand out thanks to their innovational essence, their precise lines and sober form. Since 1992, Moormann and his company have been ensconced in the idyllic landscape of Aschau im Chiemgau in upper Bavaria. Situated in the midst of the Alps, the company tries to have everything manufactured by firms located nearby. As a large proportion of the product components are manufactured by external suppliers, the company retains a high degree of flexibility and a large breadth of items manufactured. The regional structures, which have developed over a long period of time, paired with international contacts, have a decisive influence on the company philosophy. For example, the seeming disadvantage of a lack of infrastructure is compensated for by conscious definition of what the company stands for by the place where it is located. From an unconventional one-man firm, an enterprise has developed which employs a team of 20 employees, who leave Nils Holger Moormann time to be active as an international juror and lecturer. The furniture collection, of which many individual items have been awarded international design prizes, is constantly being extended, with new furniture and product lines being added all the time. Nils Holger Moormann, more Tyrolian than German, embodies the German strength of character, but also the Latin poetry of the Tyrol. Many of his creations evoke the Tyrol such as his wardrobes where you could store scythe for cutting the harvest as easily as clothes. Nils Holger Moormann uses objects with playfulness and mischief : shelves are installed in a delightful lack of order, kitchens float in the air, tables fold up in a blink of an eye, wardrobes move on their own accord. Nils Holger Moormann’s creations have been awarded more than 160 Design Awards throughout the world. Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo 30 31 «Twingo Reading-Car» by Nils Holger Moormann Nils Holger Moormann decided to make the cabin of his New Twingo a place of peace, rest and meditation; in stark contract to the stress which, too often, symbolises the car. An avid reader, Nils Holger Moormann has created in New Twingo a veritable « reading room » where the inhabitant can escape, far from the madding traffic jam. A library, a big sofa, fireplace… all the components of a wonderfully cosy den. « With New Twingo Reading Car, I am casting an eye full of hope on the car which is transformed into a personal refuge from which to shelter from the aggression of modern life. » Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo 32 33 «Twingo Reading-Car» «Twingo Reading-Car» by Nils Holger Moormann by Nils Holger Moormann 34 35 Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo «Twingo Reading-Car» «Twingo Reading-Car» by Nils Holger Moormann by Nils Holger Moormann 36 37 Cabinets of Curiosities Cabinets of Curiosities New Renault Twingo New Renault Twingo Production : Oz l’Agence Photographers : Hans Jacobson Khanh Renaud Lucy Butler Louis Marie de Castelbajac Matteo Lonati Roman Thomas « It should be a cast-iron rule for all candidates in the Presidential elections that they have to travel in a Presidential Twingo. » Jean-Charles de Castelbajac « In my New Twingo Cabinet of Curiosities, as in my latest album, I have strived to blend my dreams and emotions with my personal, very defined vision of reality.» Nicola Roberts « I see New Twingo as a manifesto, an explosion which expresses the essential values of my work.
