THIS MONTHS QUOTE “Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of kindred, and we are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas-time.” ― Laura Ingalls Wilder A QUOTE FOR THE NEW YEAR Let our New Year's resolution be this: we will be there for one another as fellow members of humanity, in the finest sense of the word. Goran Persson That’s right, it is almost that time of the year once again, which makes you sit back and think “where has the time gone” Why does Christmas last year only feel like yesterday? Is it that time goes faster the more you age, or is it that when we were younger we lived life at a slower pace and we weren’t in as much of a hurry, running here and there? I remember as a child Christmas seemed to take forever to get here and the wait seemed to stretch out in front of you like a large desert to be crossed. Is it the same for our children or are we so busy with all that goes on in our lives that they do not seem to notice the wait as we did? Whatever the answer is, it probably does not really matter because the fact is that the wait, no matter how long or short is almost over. On the 1st of December, it will be time to put up the tree, decorate the house and yard and bring out the advent calendars to start the official countdown. Therefore, maybe it is not about how the time flies throughout the year, because as they say time flies when you are having fun, but maybe it is about how you spend that last month in the lead up to the big day. While you are out doing your Christmas shopping, spare a thought for those who are not so fortunate. Think about placing a gift under a Christmas wish tree or donating nonperishable food items to one of the many food drives that operate at this time of the year. You could also give a busy mum that you know a free morning or afternoon of child minding so that she can get some of the things like gift wrapping done out of the way. However you spend your time over the holidays, whether it be at home or away, with family, friends or both, please remember to have a great time, eat as much as you like because let’s face it you don’t eat like that all year round so indulge while you can and most of all be safe on our roads if you are going to be out and about. I hope the big guy is good to you all and I will see you all in the New Year – Cheers Nicole Ervine Bayswater and Liddell Power Stations New England Highway, Muswellbrook The Aberdeen Whisper December 2012 Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus The following, reprinted from the editorial page of the New York Sun, was written by the late Mr. Frank P. Church: Dear Editor: I am 8 years old; some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun it's so." Please tell me the truth; is there a Santa Claus? Virginia O'Hanlon. Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the scepticism of a sceptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You may tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood Proudly supporting Upper Hunter communities Page 1 ABERDEEN INFORMATION CENTRE Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre project Located in the Aberdeen Library 22 Moray Street Postal Address: PO Box 114 Aberdeen 2336 Phone 6543 8457 Fax 6543 7669 aberdeeninfocentre@upperhunter.nsw.gov.au ABERDEEN WHISPER To place an advertisement or contribute an article, please contact The Aberdeen Information Centre on 6543 8457 Monday or Tuesday or email to: aberdeeninfocentre@upperhunter.nsw.gov.au Advertising material needs to be provided in word or as a jpg in the sizes set out below. See you all in 2013, Nicole Ervine THEFT FROM ABERDEEN PUBLIC SCHOOL To the thief who recently stole a very long garden hose from Aberdeen Public School, not only do we have some very disappointed students, but we also have a cranky cleaner and an even crankier General Assistant. The Aberdeen Public School is not Government funded and therefore has to rely on a very hard working P&C and fundraising through the generous community to replace items such as the one you have stolen. ABERDEEN INFORMATION CENTRE OPEN DAY The Scone Neighbourhood Centre’s Aberdeen branch had the first of two open days and a free sausage sizzle on Wednesday, 14 November to showcase what the service has to offer the residents of Aberdeen. A number of people attended to meet with the staff and learn more about the facilities and services on offer. Great interest was shown in the variety of things the Aberdeen Information Centre currently does with constructive suggestions being made about the sort of activities, services and facilities that might be considered in planning for the future growth of the Centre. Everyone enjoyed the sausages, cooked by the Aberdeen Lion’s Club and had an enjoyable time exploring the recently installed computers, which were donated by the Coal & Allied Mount Pleasant Project Site Donations Committee. The free Seniors Kiosk was very popular with several people interested in following up with tuition. Liz Birch, who works at the Aberdeen Information Centre commented that, “People are realising that there are computers here with free usage and internet so more and more visitors are coming into the centre. For people travelling through the area, it is a great relief to be able to get in touch with family, check Emails or have some face to face time on Skype”. Representatives from Coal & Allied attended the open day to gain a better understanding of the work that the Centre is doing for the local community. Coal & Allied Community Relations Manager Jennifer Bowcock said: “I’d like to thank Lee Watts and the friendly staff and volunteers at the Aberdeen Information Centre for putting on this wonderful open day. The Aberdeen Information Centre is the first stop for anybody travelling through the region and wanting to learn more about this unique part of the Hunter Valley. “The Mount Pleasant Project Site Donations Committee is proud to contribute to its growth and enhance its benefit to the community by donating six computers. I know they will be put to good use by the public and visitors alike, and will support the centre’s future and long term vision of becoming a community resource hub.” Mrs Lee Watts, manager of the Scone Neighbourhood Centre said, “Not everyone has an interest in computers, but this is just one of the new options available – we look forward to the community attending our next open day to discuss what other services people may like in Aberdeen” You have obviously snuck in to the school after dark like a dingo to cover your identity and you will always just be a common thief in the eyes of many. You obviously don’t have trouble sleeping at night and I hope that you are the victim of theft one day then you will know what it feels like, but then again you probably don’t have a conscience either. If you are that short of cash, come and see me and I will lend you a quid. Enjoy your new hose, you loser. Rod Wither General Assistant Aberdeen Public School. We wish everyone a safe and happy Christmas. Treasures will complete the refurbishing of Valley View Park very soon, and we are on the list for the installation of the Exercise Equipment that we bought with the help of Anglo American and Council will install it for us. We will then move on to another project yet to be decided. Our Treasurer for the last 12 years has been Valerie Snow and she has done an amazing job. Valerie has slowly stepped back over the last months and it was time at the AGM for ACC Inc for Val to vacate the position of Treasurer. Val felt it was time for her to step down after so many years as Treasurer, she has wonderfully offered to help us settle into doing the books and the banking and learning what is needed in these areas. I would like to thank all the girls at Treasures for their help and input. From now on the staff of Treasures will meet quarterly, we will all have a say in what we can or would like to do for the Community for projects. Everyone will be encouraged to put his or her ideas forward. Remember if you feel you would like to do a few hours volunteer work you will always be welcome at Treasures. Carole Johnston FROM THE LION’S DEN Members travelled to Murrurundi to celebrate 50years of Lions in Murrurundi, all enjoyed a great night. On the 7th November we joined with Apex in visiting St Joseph’s High School students for dinner (prepared and served by the Hospitality students) and enjoyed a presentation by students who had experienced the Outward Bound project. Each year our club sponsors a student on this project and last year donated to the school for loan equipment for students to use on the course. Lions Youth of the Year Quest is on 25th November and we hope to have a number of students vying for the honour to represent our club and their school at Zone judging. It is always a great night with the audience enjoying the wide range of subject chosen by the students for their speeches. January will see us hosting the Australia Day breakfast at the Rose Garden so mark the date on your calendar and join us for bacon & egg roll and a cuppa. Lion Jim Bruce has plenty of Lions Christmas cakes for sale so place your order early. They will be for sale at the RSL, or pop in and see him on Friday nights at the raffles. On behalf of our Club, I wish everybody a safe and happy Christmas and a prosperous, healthy New Year. Depression Support Group Gains Interest Strong interest was shown at a public meeting held recently at the Scone Neighbourhood Centre with fifteen people attending and participating in discussions about establishing a Depression Support Group in Scone. People experiencing depression, representatives from service groups, and others experienced in supporting people, their carers and families came along to the meeting to discuss ways in which a support group can be established. Those who attended the public meeting showed strong enthusiasm for the idea of establishing a support group with many of those present being interested in continuing their involvement. Manager of the Neighbourhood Centre, Lee Watts said, “The Neighbourhood Centre sees this as a welcome initiative and we are pleased to be able to offer some assistance in helping achieve a positive outcome. A support group for people with depression will offer additional options and can only be of benefit to the whole community.” A follow up meeting has been organised for 6:00 pm on Thursday 22nd November at the Scone Neighbourhood Centre, 130 Liverpool St to start putting in place some of the ideas that came out of the public meeting. People interested in being part of the planning are encouraged to attend. No booking needed. For further information about the planning meeting, contact the Scone Neighbourhood Centre on 6545 2662 or email Karen Beckingham kaz.beckingham1970@gmail.com or phone 6545 2679. Care Packages for Soldiers. I would like to say thank you to all those wonderful people who have helped make it possible to send Care Packages to our soldiers. I am in awe of the kindness of everyone, it just would not be possible without the donations of goodies and money to buy the snacks and treats and personal hygiene items. To date we have managed to send 146 packages, a massive achievement for our little town. This includes the 29 that will be sent in the coming two weeks. We will keep sending Care Packages for as long as we can, hopefully until our troops come home. A humungous thank you to my little helper Braiden who comes and helps me do the Care Packages, he is a terrific help and knows how much the troops love their boxes. Carole Johnston A few years ago I bought at a market a second hand copy of a CD called “Penguins in the Mall”, which was beautiful string music of well-known tunes. Recently while doing a clean out of my house, discarding some things including tapes and CD’s I no longer wanted, I realized the musicians were a Sydney group. I contacted the phone number and got two other CD’s and more of the original for gifts. Beautiful easy-listening music, ideal for Christmas gifts. Jan Simmons. Boy the year sure has flown! Recently we celebrated Larry Pittman’s 25 years of Service, and as part of that all of Larry’s friends and family in Scouting and in everyday life came together at Aberdeen Bowling Club to pay homage to Larry for his commitment of 25 years to the Scouting movement. What a wonderful achievement! A lovely meal was served, there were speeches and stories were told that made us all laugh, and you know what they say about laughter being the best medicine and all that! Well it was what we all needed and much fun was had by all. And cake! WHAT A CAKE!! My compliments to the chef. After all of the pomp and ceremony, Larry was presented with a gift or two by his loyal Scouts, Cubs and Joeys. And then it was time to dance, and dance we did, until the early hours of the morning. I would like to thank Larry personally because if it were not for you Larry, I would never have had the encouragement needed to become a leader. I aspire to you. You are wise, happy and kind of heart. I am sure I speak for everyone when I wish you many more wonderful years within the Scouting Movement. We are truly blessed to have you at 1st Aberdeen. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in making this celebration possible, from its inception to its conclusion, thank you also to everyone for attending and making the night a special one for Larry Well, Scouts are gearing up for the Jamboree, not long now guys! We wish you all the best at Jamboree 2013. This will truly be a life changing event, so enjoy every moment won’t you! I will close this instalment by wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. We invite your attendance at this Christmas function and the screening of “It’s a Wonderful Life” starring James Stewart, Donna Reed and Lionel Barrymore. This 1946 film is considered a tradition on television every Christmas season. “It’s a Wonderful Life” is a heart warming tale of a small town man with dreams and ambitions that were never realised. On the brink of despair and contemplating suicide, his guardian angel appears and takes him on a journey to show him what life in Bedford Falls would have been without him and that his life has been a truly wonderful one. Auditorium doors at the Aberdeen Sports and Recreation Club will open at 11.30am and a three-course luncheon will be served prior to the screening of the movie. A donation of $10 is requested to cover costs. As numbers are limited, early bookings are essential and can be made by phoning Jan 65437150 or Jan 65425168. Bengalla Workers Fund New Medical Equipment for Muswellbrook Hospital The arrival of a new excavator bucket at Bengalla mine has been the catalyst behind workers digging deep to fundraise for new medical equipment at Muswellbrook District Hospital. Two new electric beds and a cardiac monitor worth a combined value of more than $11,000 will soon be installed at the local hospital, which at current capacity provides bedding for more than 50 patients. The employee-driven fundraiser included 2012 MasterChef Australia winner Andy Allen cooking a barbeque at the mine, as well as a public raffle draw with prizes donated by the mine’s workers and suppliers. The amount raised increased to more than $11,000 after the site applied for corporate funds through the ‘Team up for a Cause’ initiative, run as part of Coal & Allied’s SD&Me programme. Muswellbrook Hospital Auxiliary President Sue Durham said: “We’re blown away by this generous donation from Bengalla mine’s workforce and Coal & Allied. The operation and its workforce have always shown strong support for our work and this extra funding is going to help us improve the hospital’s facilities and services. For example, the last time we were able to provide electric beds for the hospital was four years ago so this donation is going to make a significant difference.” Presented by the Upper Hunter Museum of Rural Life Inc. Raising funds to save the collection of artefacts at Glenbawn and relocate them to a museum and cultural centre in Aberdeen. To achieve success in our plans the support of the whole community is needed - new members or volunteers are always welcome. Presidents Report.( A condensed version). A very big year of decisions has been unfolding this last twelve months. Our hardest decision was that we would not be operating as a group any longer, as with Val living in another town and no new people coming along, Acc Inc. could no longer be as it was. We have disposed of the Country Dances; they have been taken over by another group, The Information Centre and The Whisper of course. We will however keep our name and just be there for operating of Aberdeen Treasures. This means that we are still working hard for the community, that the shop will be able to give everything we make back to Aberdeen, and that we will take on small but affordable tasks. At last, the exercise equipment for Valley View Park has arrived at Scone Council storage; we are on the list for the instillation of the items and soft fall. Aberdeen Treasures and Anglo American jointly purchased the equipment. Matt Frodsham helped make this possible for us to go ahead and complete the park; we could not have done it alone, we have very much appreciated Matt attending our meetings and making us feel we were doing something worthwhile. We are ordering a plaque to be placed at the Park and it will be installed when ready. Val Snow has had the mammoth task of trying to do all the bookwork and tirelessly had to do the balances at times almost driving her mental, it has been a task that only an experienced Treasurer could do so we thank Val for everything she has done. Val has offered also to be in the background for Treasures to help us settle into the bookwork. Proud achievements of Aberdeen Community Caring Inc. The Aberdeen Whisper, Aberdeen Treasures, The Aberdeen Information Centre, The Country Dances, Seniors Country Fair, Big Boys Toy Day, The Quilt Day, Markets, Christmas Light Competition the seats around the town, Valley View Park restoration, a new kitchen at Aberdeen Treasures. We have helped families with goods and clothing from Treasures in times of fire and hardship, Treasures has helped with Soldiers Care Packages, collects all year round for Prizes for the seniors day, toys for children at Christmas. All in all Aberdeen Community Caring Inc. will be remembered as a group that worked so well together, achieved each goal set and without any in group disruptions. The smaller version of just Aberdeen Treasures will endeavour to still do projects for Aberdeen. Bob Johnston.. President. The Pageant is being organised as a community event, particularly in the spirit of a family occasion. With this in mind, not only are the students and teachers being asked to organise and implement the activities on the evening, but an invitation is extended to parents and families and all community members to take part in this special annual event held at the school. OUTSTANDING STUDENT RECORD Lachlan Phelps (Yr 9B) recently came to the attention of the Guinness Book of Records for his didgeridoo playing. At Arrowfield Stud in Scone on Wednesday 14 November he played the didgeridoo and achieved the longest note on a didgeridoo of 65.6 seconds and has been awarded the Guinness World Records. He is the proud owner of a Certificate from the Guinness Book of Records which states: “The longest note on a didgeridoo was blown by Lachlan Phelps in Scone, NSW, Australia, on November 14 2012.” Congratulations Lachlan in this great achievement in your music career. NEW INDUSTRY STANDARD TECHNOLOGY On Thursday 8 November, St Joseph’s celebrated the induction of its latest piece of technology; the acquisition of a CNC lathe. The event was attended by Mick Hall from Mt Arthur Coal, Adam Greentree P&F President, Virginia Greentree P&F Publicity Officer and members of the school executive. The purchase of the CNC lathe was as a result of the initiative taken by the school’s P&F to support the school in its growth and to complement the facilities already in use in the Mary McKillop Trade Training Centre. The machine is excellent for this function as it incorporates universal coding and programming. Mt Arthur Coal sponsored St Joseph’s in the purchase of the CNC lathe and Mick Hall was impressed by the knowhow of students Duncan Moffitt and Zac Lesnick, who capably demonstrated how to set up and operate the machine. Mt Arthur’s substantial investment in the school is another example of the support they have given to the local community and the development of partnerships between schools and industry. TOUCH FOOTBALL SUCCESS by Lisa East and Matthew Barnes (PDHPE Teachers) On Thursday 8 November the Years 7 and 8 boys and girls touch teams travelled to Bathurst to compete in the NSW All Schools Touch Tournament. They gained entry by winning the All Schools Regional Qualifier held in Tamworth earlier this term. Both teams played extremely well on the day. The boys team really stepped up to the plate and went through their 5 round games with 3 wins and 2 draws and finished equal top in their pool. They won the quarter final match against Red Bend Catholic College 4-1 which saw them play Hills Sports High School, defending champions, in the semifinal. The boys fought hard but lost 3-1 to finish in the top 4 in the state! The team consisted of- Cade Pennell-Cust, Thomas Bianco, Joshua Tickle, Beau Harris, Sheldon Harris, Jacob McCormick, Matthew Dunn, Harry Douglas, Bailey Ellis, Edan Tickle, Nathan Connor and James Drayton. The girls’ team had a very challenging pool, however, went through their 6 round games with 5 wins and 1 loss and conceded only 2 touch downs. They won the quarter final match against Tomaree 5-0 which saw them play Hills Sports High School, defending champions, in the semi-final. The girls were winning 2-1 with 1 minute remaining when a controversial decision went against us. Hills Sports then scored which resulted in a drop off. The girls were down to 3 players and showing signs of exhaustion. Hills sports then scored resulting in a 3-2 victory to Hills Sports. I am very proud of the girls as they demonstrated enormous desire and sportsmanship throughout the contest. The girls team consisted of - Brianna Muddiman, Mikaela Tilse, Victoria Wicks, Jayde Radcliffe, Kelsey French, Danielle Nicol, Sophie Morgan, Baillee Mavin, Emma Moore, Cassidy Gepp, Sophie Dykes and Isabel Akauma. Pictured from left: Mt Arthur Coal representative Mick Hall, St Joseph’s P&F Representatives Adam and Virginia Greentree and St Joseph’s students Zac Lesnick and Duncan Moffitt. The purpose of the CNC lathe is not so much as a production tool, but rather a tool to enable students to simulate the set up and programming of similar but much larger machines that would be utilised in industry. The Aberdeen Whisper December 2012 Throughout the tournament, the attitude and commitment to a team spirit was evident among our Joeys students. It makes me very proud as a teacher of St Joseph’s Aberdeen to take away such a respectful and talented group of young men and women who really made the trip a memorable experience. Thank you also to Mrs Kerrigan for joining our students on this special occasion. It was great to see Drew W, Chloe H and Kaydee T paying their respects on the day. dressed and ready! We didn’t have lunch and dinner at our accommodation we went out for them. We obviously slept in our rooms and our beds were not that comfortable. On the last day the tidiest room got a prize which was a key chain of a piece of gold. When we left, the lady congratulated us on how good our behaviour was! By Phoebe D Bowling On the first night, Stage 3 went bowling, we played one game. While the games were played we danced to such songs as gangnam style, party rock anthem and many more, one of our very good dancers was Ryan Lockhart. The bowling alley had fluoro lights so all the white was glowing blue. Curtis Irving had the highest score out of all Stage 3 his score being 138!!!! (with bumpers) By Curtis I Trivia Night for the Black Family Congratulations to Jason & Alison Phelps, Shane & Monique Lloyd and their team on the fantastic trivia night they organised for the Black Family. Over $7,000 was raised on the night. The generosity of our community is amazing. Stage 1 Excursion to Strathearn Village Kindergarten, Year 1 & 2 will be performing at Strathearn Retirement Village on the 12th December. Families are welcome to attend and we would like each child to bring a present for a resident. CLASS KL Kindergarten enjoyed a fun filled cooking day last Friday. Thanks to the wonderful helpers, Kindergarten cooked pikelets, kebabs, trifle and iced cookies. A huge thank you once again to our parent helpers, who are welcome to our classroom anytime. Kindergartens vegetable garden is flourishing with all the love and care it is receiving from the students. Thank you goes to Mrs Grimshaw who bought us some new vegie plants. We are busy rehearsing for our assembly item and are still looking for a few items – Christmas hats, kangaroo costume and small blow up pool. THE STAGE 3 BATHURST EXCURSION Accommodation Stage 3’s accommodation at Bathurst was called ‘The Gold Panner Motor Inn’. Some rooms were fairly small and some rooms were fairly big. We got our breakfast delivered to our rooms and when we got breakfast some of us were still in bed but some were up and already The Aberdeen Whisper December 2012 The Cattle Show On the second day of the Stage 3 excursion, we travelled to Heritage Park for the Cattle Show. One of the sheep was vomiting up grass; it was so gross, but also pretty funny! There were lots of sheep and cows and some kids – adding myself – got to milk one and the udder was so slimy and gross but so funny! There was also a mini pony with a pink cowgirl hat on and a donkey with big, pink star sunglasses on. There was also a cheeky goat that ran around eating the other animal’s food! I loved the Cattle Show; it was my favourite part of the Stage 3 excursion! By Amy M Goldfields On the second day we went to the Bathurst Goldfields. We did a lot of activities including putting up a tent, cooking damper. We also got to go panning for gold. It was so fun considering no one really knew what gold actually looked like. But we mostly found alluvial gold. The guy talked a lot but we were all interested in what he had to say. His wife, Leslie, was also a very good cook. While we cooked our damper in the fire she would tell us all about making damper. Most of us liked it but some of us didn`t.
