Welcome everyone to the Madison 56ers Soccer Club tryouts for the 2016-2017 soccer
season.
Involvement in the Madison 56ers Soccer Club is a source of pride and accomplishment for
its players, coaches and parents. Expectations are high for anyone joining this wellestablished soccer family, which has been in existence since 1956.
We are firmly dedicated to providing a soccer environment that will allow every player to
learn and grow to the best of her/his ability and for the top level of play to be achieved by
those who seek it.
What to Expect from the Madison 56ers:
• Safe, fun, challenging and developmentally appropriate training environment.
• Trainers and coaches dedicated to getting the most from each player, challenging
players to improve every day and to play the game because they love it.
• Information and feedback that properly educates players in order to improve their
abilities and to provide a smooth transition from one level to the next.
What the Madison 56ers Expect:
• Players willing to give it their all to learning this great game with consistent practice
and game attendance.
• Players who are mentally prepared to work hard, to compete, and to perform to the
best of their abilities.
• Players who support their team and their club.
The goal of the Madison 56ers Soccer Club and its coaching staff is to provide an
educational and rewarding soccer playing experience for all of its members. It is also the goal
of each team to play at the highest level possible, be that locally, state or regionally. This
year the club is excited to continue entering our Boys Red teams in the National Premier
League at the U13–U18 age levels. The building blocks for this begin at U11 & U12, where
individual skill development is the cornerstone of a soccer players’ development.
It is important to note that the Madison 56ers are coached by a group of professionals that
works together in order to maximize their effectiveness with the players. While each team
has a primary coach, other staff members will lead trainings and coach games from time to
time. This allows for different perspectives and insights that can be applied to the players,
enhancing their soccer education. We strongly believe in our coaches and their abilities to
provide exceptional training environments for our teams and players.

PLAYER / FAMILY EXPECTATIONS
WHO WE ARE
The Madison 56ers Soccer Club was founded in 1956 and is dedicated to developing soccer
talent and has earned success at all levels of play including 24 Youth State Championships, 1
Youth NPL Division Championship, 1 Men’s National Championship, 6 Men’s State
Championships, 4 Men’s Region II Championships, and 3 Women’s State Championships.
Every member of the fully licensed coaching staff is totally committed to this long-term process
and all programs and resources in the club are focused on player development. The depth of
talent and experience of our coaching staff allows the Madison 56ers to provide a stable youth
soccer career for players at all ages. In our club, this process begins at the Under-10 /11 age
group. We are firmly dedicated to providing a soccer environment that will allow every player to
learn and grow to the best of their abilities.
CALENDAR
The Madison 56ers yearly calendar is divided into 5 periods. (Please note that the dates are
approximate and could change).
Fall Season: (August – early November)
Team trainings begin in early August and continue through the end of October. Team
trainings are held two or three times a week during this period. Opportunities for some
younger players to occasionally train a third time during the week may also be provided.
White and Silver teams train two times per week. Team trainings during the fall and
spring are mandatory. U-11 and U-12 teams compete in local MAYSA (Madison Area
Youth Soccer Association) leagues; games are basically within Dane County. The teams
will compete in 2-3 tournaments, most likely local or within a few hours’ drive. In addition,
some U-11 and U-12 teams will compete in the Wisconsin Developmental Academy
(WDA). Older boy’s teams compete in the WYSA (Wisconsin Youth Soccer Association)
State Leagues, the WDA, and the National Premier League, a highly competitive
regional league. Girl’s teams will also look to compete in the WYSA state league, the
WDA, and the Midwest Regional League (MRL). Some teams travel further for
tournament competition. High school girls play State Cup during the fall season.
Attendance at all scheduled team events including practices and especially
League games and State Cup games is mandatory.
November
Players will have some down time (1 week – 10 days) after the Fall season is over and
HS Boys teams will start to train in mid-November.
Winter Season: (Mid / Late November –March / Early April)
During this period, the teams train at our Indoor facility in Oregon with a break during the
weeks of Christmas and New Years. Trainings during the winter are highly
recommended and encouraged. Knowing that many of our athletes play winter sports,
the Madison 56ers will also offer the opportunity to train with other teams in our club over
the winter months to avoid conflicts with other sports and give our players a flexible
schedule. With the addition of our indoor facility and knowing that player development is
a year-round process, the Madison 56ers offers multiple trainings during this period and
encourages and promotes athletes who may not play another sport to attend as many
indoor trainings as possible. Additional trainings may be scheduled for the team. The
team may also compete in 1-2 sessions of indoor soccer and/or in 1 indoor tournament
during this time. Players’ fees do not cover indoor competition or additional indoor
training scheduled by the team.
Spring Season: (April – mid-June)
This is the second major season of the year. The training and game structure is very
similar to the fall season, though the season is shorter. The team may compete in about
2-3 tournaments, including State Cup (usually falls on Memorial Day Weekend) for Red
teams U-13 and older and some White Teams. Once again, attendance at all
scheduled team events including practices and especially League games and
State Cup game is mandatory. Please note the high school players will have a slightly
different schedule due to the actual high school seasons.
Summer Season: (mid-June – July)
High School boys and girls players will be given the opportunity to train in the summer.
The schedule will be announced after tryouts are completed. High School girls’ teams
will likely begin training for the fall season in mid-to-late July. Try-outs are typically held
immediately before this period, and the next year’s team is selected. At this point, the
calendar begins again.
GENERAL INFORMATION
v Red (1st) v White (2nd) v Silver Teams: The difference between Red and White teams
generally revolves around time commitment level. Red teams look to train 3 times a
week (U13 and above) while White and Silver teams train twice a week. Red teams look
to participate in 6 tournaments and State Cup while White teams participate in 5
tournaments and usually do not play in State Cup. Silver teams are similar to White
teams, except they will attend 4 tournaments.
v Madison 56ers teams will occasionally train together across age groups. This keeps the
training environment fresh and exposes players to new coaches and new friends. This
also allows for more specific functional training and challenges more advanced players.
Teams across the age group may also train together on occasion for similar reasons.
v Goalkeeper-specific trainings will also be offered on a weekly basis once the season has
begun. Players interested in becoming a goalkeeper are encouraged to attend
goalkeeper specific camps in the summer to expand their knowledge of this unique and
important position.
v The Madison 56ers coaching staff works as a unit. It will not be unusual for a coach to
cover a training or game for a team that is not his/her primary team. This is a great
opportunity for players to be exposed to different members of the 56ers coaching staff.
PARENT/FAMILY EXPECTATIONS
The following are mandatory expectations for families/parents of players in the Madison 56ers
Soccer Club. The Madison 56ers Soccer Club has a paid coaching director, coaching staff, and
office administrator. The rest of the Club’s initiatives are volunteer-staffed. All families must
participate in volunteer activities or pay a fee to opt out.
The club expects all families to volunteer 9 credits of time throughout the year. Those families
that do not meet the 9 credits will be billed at the end of the year for credits not served. The
rate will be $25 per credit up to $225 per family. These credits and rates are in line with what
other competitive clubs require. Some opportunities to help the club are listed below.
Volunteer at the Fall Madison 56ers Tournament: All families should volunteer a
minimum of 3 hours (or credits) at the fall Madison 56er tournament, which is the
Madison 56ers biggest fundraiser, and participation is a must to ensure its success.
This year’s tournament is scheduled for September 9-11, 2016. Tournament volunteer
opportunities will be managed with an on-line system and will be on a first-to-volunteer
basis.
Volunteer to Club: In addition to the tournament volunteer opportunities, there are also
opportunities to help with the 56ers Adult program, the tryouts, the annual golf outing,
field maintenance, fundraising, spring tournament, and others. Please contact the club

volunteer opportunities and have any special skills that you’d like to use to benefit the
club.
Volunteer to Team: There are also opportunities to volunteer your services for individual
teams to earn credits. Typical jobs include team treasurer, hotel and travel coordinators,
web page administrator, referee payer, photographer, and others. Managers will work
with the Club’s volunteer coordinators to keep track of credits earned for these jobs.
Fee Payment and Scholarships: Families will be expected to pay fees on time. Scholarships
are available and are based on financial need. (Tax forms and an application are required.)

Scholarship families are not exempt from volunteer commitments. For further information,
please contact the scholarship coordinator at scholarships@madison56ers.org.
Additional Funds: Families are required to pay for coaches travel expenses to tournaments and
games outside of Dane County and miscellaneous fees. UNIFORM COSTS ARE EXTRA and
are paid directly to Stefan’s Soccer Supply. Uniforms need to be ordered quickly to ensure that
they have arrived by the first competition dates. Please pay special attention to deadlines.
Indoor league fees are additional as indoor league participation is optional.
Code of Conduct: Last but not least, parents should follow the Parent Code of Conduct and
display positive attitudes at all times when on the sidelines or at other team functions. The
players also have a Code of Conduct that must be signed and returned with deposits.

NATIONAL PREMIER LEAGUE (NPL) Q & A
Will the Cost Be Greater For This Programming?
We anticipate a slight increase for those competing on NPL teams. This difference is
to cover securing consistent and improved indoor training space for the off-season
training sessions. This is a regional league so for those not currently on or having
experienced regional league play there are additional travel costs - transportation,
food, lodging. For those accustomed to regional league play it will be similar in some
respects, though depending on the schedule, possibly less travel than MRL.
Is There Going To Be A Lot of Travel?
While there are clubs involved in the league that are some distance away – MO, IL,
MN, MI, KY, OH – we will not necessarily travel to all of these clubs, some will be
coming to us. It will depend on the schedule any given year or season - sometimes
we may have 2-3 longer trips and other times it may be limited to the Milwaukee Chicago area. Since the Madison 56ers teams will play at each location together,
with 2 teams traveling together in the fall and 5 in the spring, there is great potential
for using buses and / or plenty of opportunity for sharing rides.
What Are Some Key Benefits Of This League?
• One key benefit is the level of competition our players will be facing day in and day
out. Some of these clubs are regionally and nationally recognized. Our athletes
will enjoy high-end competition every time they step on the field, a key component
to raising the level of our own players. Also we do not need to qualify for this
league by winning at younger age groups, we are a part of the league. Dedicated
players need to know if they want to face strong competition all the way through
their youth soccer days this is the place for it.
• When we do travel all the teams will be going to the same place, suggesting a more
‘unified’ or ‘club’ atmosphere as opposed to each team being off on their own each
weekend. This will also allow for more opportunities, when appropriate, to club
pass players ‘up’ onto older teams. This can be to help teams that are short
players for a game or to give younger players an opportunity to test their skills
against more developed players.
• Showcase events put on by the league allow us ‘pre-season’ games ahead of the
start of the season against excellent opponents from the other Divisions. These
events will be promoted by the league to college soccer coaches and to US Soccer
scouts for the appropriate age groups.
• These teams will play one game a day, which we feel is appropriate for the players
to ask of themselves in order to get optimum performance for each competition.
Will These Teams Play WYSA Sponsored Leagues and NPL?
Yes. All teams in the NPL will also compete in WYSA league play. The U13 and
U14 teams will play 6–7 NPL games and 7–8 WYSA games. High School aged
teams will play 6-7 NPL games and most likely a 5–6 game WYSA schedule.
Why Did We Make the Change?
Quite simply, the change was made to secure top competition every year. The
knowledge of who we will face each season, regardless of whether we are winning or
not at U11 and U12, allows us to truly stress player development at those younger
ages with no concern with results and how or if it will impact our placement in the
coming years. We want to continue to develop and attract top-level players and if
high-level soccer is what you want, this is the place to get it.
Will The Training Schedule Be Any Different?
For the high school aged teams it will be virtually the same: 3x/week in the season
and 2x/week in the winter with a weekend and mid-week session. U13 and U14 will
see a change with the addition of a mid-week off-season indoor session. There will
be a stronger emphasis on the winter training and attendance will be necessary if we
are going to be prepared and do well in the spring.
Why Is There No U17 Age Group?
Traditionally at U18 and somewhat at U17 there is a falling off by players as their
priorities change and they become less committed to the game. As a result it
becomes very difficult for clubs to consistently field teams at both U17 and U18 for
games at this level. Therefore there is a U18 age group that we expect will be
comprised of the players with both the capabilities and the commitment to participate
on a team with this sort of schedule.

If you are offered and accept a position on a Madison 56ers team, you must make a NONREFUNDABLE deposit within 48 hours to secure this roster spot. If we do not receive the deposit,
you risk losing your position on the team. Positions will be offered in writing by email. Some players
may also be called on the phone. Up to 6 alternate offers will be given per team. Alternates will be
notified of their status as soon as it is known whether positions will open or not be available. If you
will be out of town during the notification period, please make arrangements to check email or voice
mail or provide an alternate phone number so that you may be contacted. Please plan a way to get

Madison 56ers and Madison Alliance notification dates are:
v U-11 through U-13 Boys and Girls will be notified not before 6 p.m., June 17, 2016
v U-14 through U-19 Boys and Girls will be notified not before 6 p.m., June 24, 2016
Alliance offers will occur on the same days as the Madison 56ers offers. Players may get an offer to
both an Alliance Team AND a 56ers team. It is your responsibility to respond to ANY team that you
obtain an offer from. Do NOT assume that one club will notify the other. The names of ALL players not
making 56ers teams will be given to the Alliance Age Group Commissioner who will be making offers
to those who indicated the desire to play on an Alliance soccer team. Please contact your Alliance
Club for the status or follow-up on Alliance offers.

CODE OF CONDUCT—PLAYERS
GENERAL
The Madison 56ers Soccer Club expects that all participants will maintain a high standard of
conduct at all times and will enforce the standard firmly and fairly. If and when violations occur,
the violator will receive disciplinary action from the Madison 56ers Soccer Club according to its
Rules and Policies.
STANDARD OF CONDUCT
1. Be a good sport whether you win or lose. Show a positive attitude toward your teammates,
coaches, game officials, and spectators watching the game.
2. Respect the people you play against. After all, without them, you would have no one to
play. Address no comments to opposing players, coaches, spectators, or referees unless
your comments express genuine friendship and respect; or unless they constitute a direct
response to questions by game, league, or tournament officials. In other words, “If you can’t
say anything nice, don’t’ say anything at all!”
3. Follow the rules. Your team, the league and soccer in general all have rules for practices
and games. Practices and games are more fun and safe within the rules.
4. Be there for your team! Players are expected to be at all team activities and to arrive on
time with proper equipment and prepared to play. Players are expected to be at all team
activities even if they are unable to actively participate. The guideline for player attendance at
team activities is: if the player is able to go to school, she/he is expected to attend the team
activities. The converse is also true: if the player was unable to attend school, then the player
should not attend the team activity. Whenever a player is unable to attend a team activity, the
player is expected to let the coach and team manager know in advance in writing or via
telephone. Unexcused absences and other disciplinary matters will be handled in accordance
with the team policies set by the coach and the Madison 56ers Director of Coaching at the
start of the season.
5. Players play in games at the sole discretion of the coach. Despite any other assurances,
players are not guaranteed playing time. Players play at positions assigned at the sole
discretion of the coach. Players should not demand to play or not play certain positions. You
must remember that you are playing competitive soccer and the coach will play you where it
is best for the team and your individual development. Because the program goals include
improvement of each participant’s soccer skills and knowledge, coaches can, when
appropriate, use game and practice situations to teach new positions to players.

3. Refrain from yelling at the referees, coaches or players.
4. Respect the opponents. Without them, your son or daughter would have no one to play
against. Address no comments to opposing players, coaches, spectators, or referees
unless your comments express genuine friendship and respect, or unless they constitute a
direct response to questions by game, league or tournament officials. In other words, “If
you can’t say anything nice, please don’t say anything at all.”
5. Refrain from smoking or alcohol consumption during soccer games or practices.
Point out the disadvantages of smoking, drinking and drug abuse, especially in athletic
performance, to your players.
6. Remain even-tempered; display no ill-tempered behavior. Foul language has no place
on the soccer field, either at games or practices.
7. Support your player and the team by following the rules regarding equipment, practices,
and arriving on time and ready to play. Be sure that your player has the proper clothing
and equipment every time he or she steps onto the soccer field.
8. Support the league in which your son or daughter plays and promote its programs.
9. Follow field rules during games. Parents are to be on the opposite side of the field from
players during games. Only team players and coaches are allowed on the teams’ field side
before, during, and after games.

MADISON 56ERS VOLUNTEER PROGRAM Families are required to participate in 9 credits of volunteerism for the Madison 56ers Soccer Club. The 9 credits are per family, so if you have multiple players in the club, you will only need to fulfill 9 credits total. The 56ers use SignUpGenius to administer our program. There are 3 categories that families may participate in to receive volunteer credits: • Madison 56ers Tournaments (Fall and Spring) • Team jobs – your team manager will provide a listing of available volunteer duties • Service to the Club (administrative, golf outing, PLA, etc.) Each volunteer opportunity will be set up as a separate event in SignUpGenius. You will receive an email inviting you to sign up for a job/shift/item to bring, etc. This will be sent to the Primary Guardian’s email that is listed in League One. Please try to use the email that is in the League One system to sign up for Volunteer jobs so that your account can be updated correctly with your credits. 29 Annual Madison 56ers Invitational September 9-­‐11, 2016 PARENT VOLUNTEER SIGN-­‐UP INFORMATION The annual Madison 56ers Fall Invitational is one of Wisconsin’s premier soccer events. It is also our club’s major fundraising effort. In order to put on this tournament we continue to rely on all of our 56ers families, who have generously donated their time and talents for past tournaments. Unlike many tournaments, none of our tournament staff are paid – we are all 56er family volunteers. As a part of your commitment as a 56er club member, a representative of each player (a parent or person 14 years of age or older) is requested to volunteer for at least one, but not more than two, shifts during the tournament. Each shift will count as 3 credits towards the total volunteer requirement from each member. Because all 56er teams benefit from the proceeds of this tournament, boy’s high school age teams are not exempt from this request even though their season does not start until the Spring of 2017. Please make every effort to honor the volunteer commitment. Volunteers will again use the SignUpGenius website to sign up for their shift(s) this year.
