Author Patricia Nell Warren, a frequent Express
columnist, has written a superb article on the human side of
AIDS treatment. It appears in this month’s A & U magazine.
As we continue on without a cure, the side-effects and
evolving resistance of various drugs to treat AIDS will
increasingly come into play.
With AIDS becoming less of an issue in the GLBT
community, despite the continued threat, we risk severe future
consequences. Our community needs to take a more visible,
pro-active role in evaluating current treatments and therapies.
AIDS education needs to stress that therapies used to treat the disease are not a panacea.

Globe Reports
Travolta Hit on Guy
The Boca Raton Globe reported last week that a
handsome young business executive claims that John
Travolta made a gay pass at him while they were both in a
health club sauna.
He says the superstar was totally naked and sexually
aroused when he tried to pick him up.
“It was obvious to me from Travolta’s mannerisms, the way he kept touching himself
and the way he kept staring at me, that he was looking for a gay male to have fun with,”
says the executive, who asked that he be identified only as Mark.
“I am gay, and I can tell when someone else is gay, when they’re attracted to me and
when they’re trying to pick me up.”
In an exclusive interview with the GLOBE, the 29-year-old executive revealed that his
shocking encounter with the star of the hit movies “Saturday Night Fever”, “Pulp Fiction”
and “Michael began” in the locker room of the Spectrum Club, a gym in Valencia, CA at
about 8:30pm on December 20. GLOBE has independently confirmed that Travolta, 47,
made several visits to the club while filming the movie, “Swordfish,” in the area.
“I first noticed him when I was getting undressed,” confides Mark, a three-year
member of the club located about 40 miles north of L.A. “He stopped in his tracks to stare
at me, and was checking me out.”
“It was obvious to me that he was trying to hit on me.” But Mark says he was revolted
by Travolta’s tubby body. “Travolta’s manhood is very impressive,” the executive reveals.
“But he’s in horrible shape. I was disgusted by his condition. He’s flabby all over with
rolls of fat on his big stomach and his arms are really skinny. He’s also really hairy on his
back, upper arms and chest.
“I couldn’t stand to look at his body so I turned away and left quickly to go to the
sauna next door.”
‘Ab Fab’ to mount comeback
Pasty and Edina, the chain-smoking, booze-swilling heroines
of hedonism from the 1990s British comedy hit “Absolutely
Fabulous,” are making a comeback. There will be six new episodes
that will debut in the states on Comedy Central.
Joanna Lumley, who plays Patsy, and Jennifer Saunders
(Edina) starred in British television program in 1992; it debuted on
Comedy Central in 1994. The duo return with other “Ab Fab” cast members Julia Sawalha
and Jane Horrocks to produce six new episodes, which will appear first in the UK. They will
premiere on Comedy Central in November.
Another comedic project by the duo, “Mirrorball,” will run as a one-hour feature early
in 2002. Written by Saunders, “Mirrorball” tells the story of Vivienne (Saunders) and
Jackie (Lumley), two actresses past their prime in London’s West End theater scene
Lesbian, Mauresmo, Wins Third Championship
French tennis player Amelie Mauresmo, an out lesbian, won
her third championship in a row Sunday by defeating Amanda
Coetzer at the Bausch & Lomb Championships on Amelia Island,
Fla.
In February she won on indoor surfaces in Paris and Nice,
but she took a two-month break to practice. “I need to have
motivation, I need to be eager to play,’’ Mauresmo said. “It was
a good decision.’’ The win netted Mauresmo $90,000 and moved
her up in the world rankings from 15th to seventh. The win also
leaves her in good stead for the French Open next month, where
she is expected to face pressure from eager French fans. “For the
moment, it’s OK,’’
Mauresmo said of the pressure that will build as the French
Open approaches. “I’ll just try to stay real calm and take each tournament as it comes.”
Mauresmo is 20-1 for the year and hasn’t lost in nearly three months.
Also playing in the tournament was Martina Navratilova, who played doubles with
Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario. The pair lost to Conchita Martinez and Patricia Tarabini in the
final. Navratilova began a limited comeback last year. “I’ve had so many people, women in
their 40s and 50s, coming up to me and saying, ‘Can I touch you?’’’ she said. “It’s like
they’re hoping something will rub off. It’s not touching someone famous; it’s touching
someone who’s doing something special.”
