Here is why: Great Faculty Great Supervision ur faculty is at the top of the teaching profession. Several teachers have been principal dancers with major ballet companies, and have coached famous dancers. They have also coached young dancers to be winners in international competitions. No need to worry about safety. Security is provided by Purchase College. In addition, we have House Mothers (chaperones) and student councelors. Dancers are required to observe the rules of the dorm, and of the Summer School. Technique Intensive An excellent way to refine technique. Special Coaching Classes Small groups for personalized coaching. Great Experience O ne-third of our dancers return each year. This indicates the value of our Summer School. There is no Summer School quite like the Summer School of the American Academy of Ballet. About Mignon Furman Our founder Mignon Furman was the Director of the University of Cape Town Ballet School with special responsibility for teachers’ training. She formulated the programs to be used by 80 trainee teachers and 400 students. She was nominated for the Distinguished Teacher Award from amongst the entire university faculty of 1,500. A teacher, choreographer, and educationist, she was a person of determination who had the talents to give definition to her vision. She built the AAB to be one of the leading Summer Schools in America; and her Performance Awards program to be an international phenomenon. Curriculum Only at AAB... Performance Awards RESIDENTIAL DANCERS: Tuition includes all classes for 6 days a week; 3 meals a day every day; most outings; and use of the laundry. DANCERS: Tuition includes all classes for 6 days a week; lunch; dinner; and most outings. N o other Summer School has this program. It is the unique concept of Mignon Furman. The program is taught throughout the U.S., as well as in 10 other countries. Dancers receive special coaching in the program in addition to their regular classes. This is then danced before an audience. Medals and certificates are awarded to each participant. The program is an optional extra. 2. Technique Intensive T his program was also devised by Mignon Furman to improve the fundamental basis of the classical ballet technique. The results are remarkable. 3. Summer School of Excellence 2014 5 Our Distinguished Faculty Paloma Herrera Brian Reeder Vladimir Stadnik Analiese Umana (Classical Ballet) Is a Principal Dancer of American Ballet Theatre (Classical Ballet) Trained at the Vaganova Academy in Russia. Danced as a soloist in Russia, W. Europe, and the USA. A graduate of the University of Culture, St Petersburg, and of the State Conservatory Rimsky Korsakov. Now Assistant Professor of Dance at Ball State University, Indiana. Dean Vollick (Classical Ballet) Has danced with several companies in the USA and Canada. A graduate of the Teacher Training Program of the National Ballet School (Toronto). Teaches at the Boston Ballet School. Craig Salstein (Classical Ballet) Soloist with American Ballet Theater. Gina Chiavelli (Classical Ballet & Performance Awards) Was Adjunct Professor of Dance at Fordham University, and the State University of NY at New Paltz. Now Director of Pinewood School of Dance, and a judge for Performance Awards. McCree O’Kelley (Classical Ballet) Studied at the School of American Ballet and the North Carolina School of the Arts. Danced with the Atlanta Ballet and Metropolitan Opera Ballet. Toured internationally in the Broadway production of Cats. Joseph Malbrough (Classical Ballet) Has taught in Europe, Switzerland and Austria and now, on the Faculties of Purchase College and Ballet Academy East New York. 6 American Academy of Ballet (Classical Ballet) Danced with NY City Ballet, Frankfurt Ballet, and American Ballet Theater. Has choreographed for several companies, and movies. Now, a guest teacher. (Classical Ballet & Performance Awards) BFA graduate of Purchase College SUNY. Rehearsal assistant to Mignon Furman. Now dances with Baltimore Ballet. Judge for Performance Awards. Melinda Marquez (Spanish Dance) Founder and Artistic Director of the Melinda Marquez Flamenco Dance Center in New Haven. On faculty of Ballet Hispanico in New York City. Steve Rooks (Modern Dance) Was a Principal Dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company. Now an international guest teacher and Professor of Dance at Vassar College. Debbie Roshe (Jazz) Danced, and choreographed several Broadway shows. Now teaches in Manhattan. Galina Panova (Classical Ballet) Was a Principal Dancer with the Kirov Ballet, after graduating from the Perm State Choreographic College, and winning the Gold Medal at Varna. She has been partnered by Nureyev, and Baryshnikov. Guest principal dancer in Austria, Italy, Germany, and other countries. Now Associate Professor of Dance at East Carolina University. No solo variation is required. •Please arrive at least 30 minutes before the scheduled time. •Neat ballet attire to be worn. If on pointe, bring pointe shoes. •Please bring a photo in 1st arabesque. •Please bring an audition fee of $30 in cash. •All dancers will complete the full audition class. No dancer is asked to leave. •Notice of acceptance will be advised within 2 weeks of the audition date. Campus Art Our Dormitory Building Audition application forms may be downloaded from the website or may be filled in when registering at the audition. Digital Audition: •Must be received before April 30, 2014. •Notice of acceptance will be advised within 2 weeks. A. Backstage Entrance to Ballet Studios After the Performance Ballet Steps General Information Housing An entire dormitory building on the Purchase College campus is allocated to Summer School. Dancers are housed in air-conditioned double rooms with bathroom. Housing, meals and use of the laundry are included in the tuition. Three meals daily are provided on campus in a dining hall exclusively for us. Campus Facilities The Dance Building has nine air-conditioned studios and is 5-minute walk from the dormitory. There is an ATM and a general store on the campus. Supervision House Mothers (chaperones) and student counselors will supervise the students. Performances There are several theaters on the campus a 5-minute walk from the dormitory. Every dancer has the opportunity to dance in several performances, depending on their length of stay at Summer School. There are two sessions of the Performance Awards, and three performances. Parents and friends may attend these events. The Gala Performance is always so exciting! Costumes are supplied at no charge. Each dancer receives a certificate. Scholarships and prizes are awarded to dancers who have excelled. 14 American Academy of Ballet Age and Admission Students must be between the ages of 11 and 22. A minimum of 4 years ballet training is required. Admission is by audition or digital audition. See “Audition Requirements.” Placement Placement classes will be assessed by several faculty teachers to place dancers in levels which will be most advantageous to them. The Faculty will not discuss placement with any parent or teachers of the dancers who are given much consideration and opportunity in the placement process. Day Attendance Students who live near the campus may attend Summer School without living on campus. A reduced fee is payable. See “Fees.” Boys Boys will have instruction in special classes in addition to joining in the technique classes. Payment Payment may be made by credit card or check for the full amount or by not more than three installments by post-dated checks or credit card. In this case, at least 1/3 of the full amount must be paid with the completed application form. Credit card details must include the code on the back of the card. Post-dated checks must be included with the application. The final payment must be dated before May 1, 2014. A charge of $50 will be made for unpaid checks. A surcharge of 3% will be made for credit cards. Refund Policy No refunds will be made of any amounts paid unless a medical doctor’s certificate evidencing the inability of the applicant to attend Summer School is submitted. The certificate must state: •The description of the condition •When it was incurred •When it was reported •The prognosis •The reason why the dancer is not able to attend Summer School The certificate must be received before June 6, 2014. In such cases, a refund less 30%, will be made. 1. 2. 3. 4. Attend an audition, or submit your DVD. See “Audition Requirements.” You will be advised of the results of the audition within 2 weeks. If accepted, you will be mailed an application form. Return the application form, together with your check(s) or credit card details. It is suggested that you return No refunds will be made if the application for a refund is received after June 6, 2014. Arrival By Air Four airports serve Purchase College. La Guardia, JFK and Newark are about one hour by car from the college. We have arranged for a car service to meet the planes, and drive the dancers to the College. For details, see our website. Westchester: This is a smaller airport about 10 minutes by car from Purchase College. How to Apply this as soon as possible. In the past years, the applications of many dancers were returned as they were received after the enrollment was full.
