2nd December 2011 TPS SUCCESS AT THE TAUNTON AND SOMERSET MUSIC AND DRAMA FESTIVAL 2011 Once again Taunton Prep School, including the Pre-Prep Department, was very well represented throughout the Festival - with nearly 200 students taking part. The general Festival standard was extremely high and we are delighted to report our best ever set of results. It was wonderful to see the children take part in such an enthusiastic and mature way. They behaved impeccably throughout the week and it was fantastic to see them rewarded with such excellent adjudications - as well as numerous cups and medals! who represented themselves and the school so well. We are very proud of each and every one of you. A big thank you as well to all the parents and friends who transported the children to and from various venues. A huge congratulations to all the class winners listed in this week’s Courier (all the names are published on the Expressive Arts page) but also to all the students Darren Riggs YEARS 3, 4 AND 5: POETRY PERFORMANCE COMPETITION PART I - LUNCHTIME TREATS Inspired by Mr Clive Pig, Years 3, 4 and 5 entertained us with their performance poems on Tuesday. Whether the poems were written by the children themselves, or were simply ‘old favourites’, the pupils took to the stage with expression, movement and brilliant audibility. Well done, to the all the competitors and thank you for a wonderful lunchtime of entertainment. The results will be announced next week, after Years 6, 7 and 8 have had their chance. Jo Chaffey and Darren Riggs HOUSEPOINTS Total Housepoints for week starting on Monday 21st November. As you all know, we try to make the TPS edition of the Courier as exciting as possible giving you all the weekly news from Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep Departments with matching photos! Sometimes, however, we need to inform parents of forthcoming events or amendments to the usual school day. We shall be trialling a new page in the Courier - page 2 - where such notices are posted. It is really important that all parents read it to ensure that they are aware of any changes to the timetable and/or events at school the following week. School Buses - Monday 12th December On Monday 12th December, the Senior School will be holding its Carol Service. This means the school buses will be departing at a later time of 7.30pm. We have decided to lay on an earlier bus service at 4.30pm so the children are not back too late. However if this is not practical we will ensure the children are fed and looked after and they will be put on the bus at the later time of 7.30pm. Children have been given a letter which has a reply slip attached. Please fill it in and return it to the school office, so we know the As always, we welcome comments about the Courier. What would exact travel arrangements for your children. you like to read within its pages? Perhaps you could e-mail us Simon Bailey your thoughts to tpscourier@tauntonschool.co.uk. However, as you would expect, we maintain editorial rights! Headmaster Carol Services Headmaster’ Surgery We very much hope that you will be able to join us at our Carol Services on Tuesday 13th December, to celebrate together the Joy of the Nativity. I regret that there will be no “Headmaster’s Surgery” on Tuesday 6th December due to end of term commitments. If you would like to make an appointment to see me, please contact my Secretary, Nicola McColl, on 01823 703305 or via email: nicola.mccoll@tauntonschool.co.uk Alternatively, I would be pleased to hear from you via email at tpsheadmaster@tauntonschool.co.uk Headmaster Boarding News - Thone House The Thone House staff and boarders are always happy to welcome temporary boarders for a night or two during the term. This term we have had a lot of people taking us up on that offer. However, as term draws to a close we need to fill the house with trunks and suitcases as we prepare for the holiday packing frenzy. We also have one or two rather special events lined up for the boarders to help us celebrate Christmas. For this reason, we will not be accepting any temporary boarders after Wednesday 7th December. Please note that we will open our doors again for guests from Monday 9th January 2012. All of us in Thone wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Tim Harnett www.tauntonschool.co.uk The Service for pupils in Years 3 to 5 will be held at 9.30am in the School Chapel, followed by mince pies and refreshments in the Old Library. Pupils should be dropped off as usual at school in time for registration at 8.20am. There will be coffee served from 8.15am in the TPS Library for parents waiting for the first service. So that we have time to set up and ensure all the children are seated, could I please ask that parents don't enter the Chapel before 9.00am? The Service for pupils in Years 6 to 8 will be held at 11.00am. In previous years, we have been very short of space for the Senior Carol Service in the Chapel and we are conscious that there will, again, be pressure on seats this year. Accordingly, could we please ask that younger siblings in the School do not accompany you to the second service of the morning? Both Pre-Prep and the other three years of the Prep School will be operating and able to look after children until the Service is over. As before, coffee will be served before the service, from 10.30am, but in the foyer of the Arts Centre. We would also invite you to join us after the Service for mince pies and refreshments in the Old Library. Again, could we ask you not to enter the Chapel until 10.40 am. Simon Bailey Art Department Don’t forget to collect your plasticene models from the Centenary Hall. Any not claimed will be recycled! The children in Reception wrote letters to Father Christmas this week. We walked to the Royal Mail Sorting Office and the postman put our letters in a special sack bound for the North Pole! Nursery Two children got into the Christmas spirit this week writing letters to Santa. The children cut out pictures from magazines of toys they would like Father Christmas to bring them. Using their phonic knowledge, some were able to write the initial sounds of those toys, whilst others made marks to represent those sounds. The Reception Team Karen McGough Christingle Service ‘The Little Angel’ Nursery and Pre-Prep Dept Christmas Production Together with our parents and grandparents, the Nursery and Pre-Prep Departments celebrated Christingle together in our beautiful Chapel. Thank you to Mrs Pincock for organising this very special service and to Mr Crudge, our Lay Reader. You are a star! Nursery 2, Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 Classes are all involved in the Pre-Prep Christmas Production of ‘The Little Angel’. The Christingle Prayer The Christingle begins with an orange. Like the world that the Lord God made for creation. It is full of his glory. All around we see his love displayed. Every year we give thanks for this season and the fruits of the earth to share. The Christingle is here to remind us that God loves his people everywhere. To complete the Christingle, a candle tells us of the world’s true light and darkness shall not overcome it. Jesus shines on in the darkest night. Christmas is a-coming The eagerly anticipated performances take place on Thursday 8th and Friday 9th December, both starting at 9.30am. As last year, the performances will be in the Centenary Hall which provides the space for all to come and see their children. A letter will shortly be sent home giving full details. On Thursday 1st December, the PrePrep and Nursery Departments joined together in a day of Christmas crafts and Kathy McLauchlan activities, culminating in the decoration of our Christmas tree in the Pre-Prep Hall. A lovely way to celebrate the first day of December and the first day of our Advent calendar. Kathy McLauchlan Thank you to Mrs Riggs for organising this wonderful day. Please ask your children to share with you their creative decorations. Kathy McLauchlan There were cranberry and popcorn garlands, sparkly decorated silver balls, paper chains, snowmen, snowflakes and Christmas lanterns. www.tauntonschool.co.uk Please turn to page 6 of the Courier for more Pre-Prep News! This was the third such big win in a row for the rapidly improving 4th team. In the first 30 seconds of the game, Jamie Harris passed quickly and neatly to Ed Shattock on the right wing who ran from his own 10m line to score by sliding through the try line like a penguin on ice. Frederico Wieser, Jamie and Nick Coray kept passing and tackling fantastically allowing Hunter Hailes to score the first of his FOUR tries in stunning style. Henry Mancini kicked some great conversions from most places on the pitch to give TPS a lead of 24-0 at half-time. Henry scored another try by pushing his way through nearly the whole Clifton team and then Obe won the ball in a tackle and scored right under the posts. Gleb Kholodov and Henry Shelton Four of Taunton Prep School boys represented Somerset: Jake Barker IC, Alistair Robinson SH, Tommy Wyatt OF and Dan Woolmade massive contributions by huge tackling throughout the stencroft P. match.
