Temperatures
will
continue to cool as we
head into the weekend,
so expect another night
of at or below freezing
temperatures for many
areas. A cold front passing
through this afternoon
will bring another round
of chilly air, reinforcing
our cool temperatures.
This front will remain
dry, but will drop high
temperatures to the 50s
Saturday. A quick warmup will begin as we start
the next work week with
temperatures climbing to
the 60s by Monday and
the 70s by Tuesday. It
won’t last long, though!
A cold front Tuesday
night will bring cool
temperatures once again
as well as gusty winds
and a slight increase in
cloud cover.

Community to welcome Medal of Honor
recipient at Saturday veterans banquet
By Tabitha Flemming

Tomorrow marks a milestone for local organizations that have come together to show their gratitude to the Americnas that have sacrificed for freedom. The Benevolent Protective Order of the Elks,
The Vietnam Veterans of America, the Veterans of
Foreign Wars and the American Legion and their
auxiliaries along with citizen volunteers will host
the 10th Annual Hutchinson County Veterans Appreciation Banquet tomorrow evening beginning
with a social hour at 3:30 p.m. at the Borger Elks
Lodge, located at 200 Opal Street.
Ten years ago a small group of dedicated individuals joined forces to give back to the men and
women who served their country in times of war
and times of peace. Just as the event budget has
grown from a meager $400 to several thousands,
so has the reach of the event. This year it is expected to be attended by upwards of 300 individuals.
With previous special guests such as General Dale
Hoover, Warren Chisum, Four Price, and Scot
King, who raised awareness for wounded veterans
with a cross country bicycle ride, this veteran-focused gathering will continue in that proud tradition with a Colonel James P. Fleming who will be
delivering the keynote address.
The banquet is a completely free, family friendly event. “I want to make it perfectly clear,” said
Clayton Norton, committee chairman and U.S.
Army Veteran, “this isn’t just for veterans and their
families, this is for anyone who wants to show their
support for veterans and be a part of this evening General Dale Hoover, (above) a veteran of the U.S. Army, delivered the key note
where we honor them, thank them, and treat them address during the Veterans Appreciation Banquet Ceremony last yer. His lively
with the respect they have earned.”
spirit and sense of humor made for an entertaining speech. This year’s speaker,
Colonel James P. Fleming of the U.S. Air Force who was awarded the Medal of
Honor is also greatly respected and highly anticipate. (Courtesy Photo)

Brancheau announces
candidacy for 84th district
Curt W. Brancheau, current Assistant District Attorney for the 84th Judicial District, has announced he
is seeking the office of the 84th District Judge in the
Republican primary on March 1st, 2016. The 84th District, encompassing Hutchinson, Hansford, and Ochiltree Counties, is currently held by Borger resident,
Judge Bill Smith, who is retiring at the end of 2016.
Brancheau was raised on a small ranch outside
Greenville, Texas where he was taught the value of
hard work and that “everything worthwhile is worth
working for.” This hard work and discipline led to a
full athletic scholarship to Vanderbilt University in
Nashville, Tennessee where he represented the Commodores on the football field from 2000-2003, earning
his B.S. in 2004.

Youth softball complex fails to
secure funding in City Council vote
By Tabitha Fleming
(806) 273-5612
The future of a proposed softball complex is
still unknown after council failed to approve the
financial resources needed for its construction
at Tuesday night’s city
council meeting. Two
proposed
resolutions
were the topic of much
discussion at the meeting and the work session
prior. Both resolutions
concerned the issuance
of certificates of obligation, or in simpler terms,
loans.
A talked about, and as
of yet unfunded MultiPurpose Event Center
was the subject Resolution R-019-15 which
would allow the transfer
of $750,000 to the event
center account at the Amarillo Area Foundation.

Brancheau
Continued from page 1
After completing his undergraduate program,
Brancheau attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock,
obtaining his juris doctorate degree from Texas Tech
School of Law as well as a master’s degree in business
administration from Tech’s Rawls College of Business.
Brancheau’s career in the 84th district began as a
small general practice attorney, splitting time between
an office in Perryton and one in Borger. During that
time, Brancheau handled a variety of cases including
criminal defense, family law, and general litigation. After success as a criminal trial attorney, Brancheau was
offered the job as the Assistant District Attorney for the
84th District. He has represented the State of Texas and
the citizens of the 84th district in multiple criminal jury
trials since January 2013, notably obtaining verdicts of
75 years for a defendant convicted of methamphetamine
possession and a life without parole sentence for a defendant convicted of murdering a small child. He says
the 84th District Courtroom is where he feels most comfortable.
“As a former defense attorney and now as a prosecutor, I have a very unique prospective. I’ve represented
individuals’ best interests in the courtroom, as well as
the interests of the state and the community. I’ve been
lucky enough to practice a very broad cross section of
the law, from drafting simple wills, trying child custody
cases all the way up the scale to prosecuting death penalty cases.”
Brancheau believes that the future 84th District Judge
needs to have proven trial experience, a balanced perspective, and a commitment to the integrity of the court
and the conservative family values of the district.
Brancheau is married to Jenny Brancheau, a working
mother, and has two young boys, Brady, 3, and Brooks,
1. The Brancheaus are members of St. John’s Catholic
Church in Borger where Curt is active with the Knights
of Columbus.
Brancheau has been on the board of the Hutchinson
County United Way since May of 2012, serving as president from 2013-2014. He is also an active volunteer
and supporter of the local American Cancer Society.
Brancheau encourages everyone to view his website,
www.curtbrancheau.com, and to contact him with any
questions you may have about his campaign.

The resolution passed with opposition from council member Odis McClellan who expressed concern
over the current economic state and pointed to the
importance of the oil and gas industry for Borger’s
economy as well as the currently low crude prices.
Currently there is no softball specific complex
within the city of Borger, which, like many towns in
the Texas panhandle, places a great deal of importance on participation and the support of youth sports.
It is with youth in mind that a new softball 4-plex
park was proposed. The resolution before council
would have allowed the issuance of $6.5 million in
certificates of obligation to pay for the park.
City Manager Eddie Edwards explained to council
that the debt payments the city makes wouldn’t be
increased a great deal, but that the length of time that
the city would continue to make payments would increase. In other words, the city would remain in debt
for longer.
Mayor Robert Vinyard spoke in favor of the complex, and all council members expressed their desire
Veterans Banquet
Continued from page 1
The evening begins at 3:30 p.m. with a social
hour. At 4:30 p.m. as guests take their seats, the
colors will be presented by the Borger Elks Honor
Guard with the leadership of World War II Veteran
Joe Childress, and Korean Conflict Veteran Joe
Martinez. A special Prisoner of War and Missing
in Action [POW/MIA] Ceremony will honor those
who are gone but not forgotten.
The keynote address will be delivered by Colonel
James P. Fleming, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force
one of only a few distinguished of service members
that received the Congressional Medal of Honor.
Colonel Fleming will arrive in Amarillo Saturday
afternoon and lead by a cavalcade of VFW members on motorcycle towards Borger.
As the ceremony draws to an end, near 6 p.m.
Great Western Dining, of Borger, with the help of
local Boy Scouts and other volunteers will serve the
Glazed Ham or Roasted Chicken dinner. In addition
to delicious food, those in attendance will receive a
medallion, or coin, that was specially designed and
crafted for the event as a lasting keepsake.
to provide the youth with top notch facilities. Council member Charles Gillingham pointed out that the
complex could lead to additional revenue for the city
in the form of tourist dollars during tournaments or
other events at the complex.
Again McClellan dissented, and presented the argument that the current economic state was simply
not strong enough to support such a project. In McClellan’s opinion, an increase in tourist dollars was
not enough to offset the damage to the local economy
during a downturn in the oil market.
Local resident, Josh Brown, addressed council
briefly after by Mayor Vinyard. “What I would like
to know,” said Brown, who has a degree in public administration, “is how each of you feels about letting
the people decide.” Unfortunately, as Mayor Vinyard
told the crowd, because that question or issue was not
part of the original meeting agenda, there would be
no such discussion. Council members were restricted
to voting either for or against the measure.
When all was said and done, the resolution providing $6.5 million for the Softball complex failed to
pass with a split vote in which Vinyard and Gillingham were the only supporters.
The final meeting of the banquet committee last
night at the Borger Elks Lodge was one of the most
well attended of the year, with over 30 people in attendance. Always focused on expressing gratitude
and respect, Chairman Clayton Norton reiterated
what he had stated at previous meetings, that regardless of the number of meetings a volunteer had
attended, their voice would always be heard, their
vote would always count, and everyone would get
a chance to speak. This conglomeration of individuals from multiple organizations and walks of life
is a unique team, yet it is one that has withstood the
test of time, at a time when support for the nation’s
soldiers has been nationally low.
These dedicated volunteers have come a long
way from that first banquet and even though the
faces across the table have changed as beloved veterans have passed away, their memories continue
to live on in the hearts and minds of everyone,
especially the committee. Those mmemories will
serve to motivate the Hutchinson County Veterans
Appreciation Banquet Committee members as they
carry out their mission to show the nation’s defenders the duty, loyalty, honor, and respect that they
have more than earned.

ARIES
(March 21 to April 19)
Continue to look for ways to
improve your job, because they definitely exist. And remember, this is
also the year you can improve your
health. Factoid.
TAURUS
(April 20 to May 20)
You love your creature comforts.
Note: This is the best year in over a
decade for Taurus people to enjoy a
big vacation. Take several vacations!
GEMINI
(May 21 to June 20)
Be reassured that this is a year
for you to get a better home or enjoy
the one you have in a better way. For
some reason, you will feel richer and
happier at home.
CANCER
(June 21 to July 22)
Always remember that everything in life begins with a thought.
From the thought springs the word;
from the word springs the deed; the
deed soon becomes habit; and habit
hardens into character. This year your
DENNIS THE MENACE

thoughts are positive!
LEO
(July 23 to Aug. 22)
As I mentioned before, you can
boost your earnings this year. And
you can increase your assets. Continue to look for ways to do this.
VIRGO
(Aug. 23 to Sept. 22)
Right now Venus, Mars and lucky
Jupiter are all in your sign, boosting
your energy, making you charming
and diplomatic, and bringing you
good fortune. You wanted more?
LIBRA
(Sept. 23 to Oct. 22)
It’s wise to be open to exploring
your inner world this year, because
for some reason, this will be important to you. How we are inside eventually manifests outside.
SCORPIO
(Oct. 23 to Nov. 21)
Others definitely can benefit you
this year -- no question. Therefore,
join clubs, groups and associations.
Make new friends and share activities with others.
SAGITTARIUS
(Nov. 22 to Dec. 21)
For over a decade, it is never been
easier than this year for Sagittarians
to garner the respect of others. It’s
your year to boost your reputation!
CAPRICORN
(Dec. 22 to Jan. 19)
Even though you are downsizing
in some ways and letting go of things,
you want to travel. You will benefit
from medicine, the law, publishing
and the media.
AQUARIUS
(Jan. 20 to Feb. 18)
You can benefit from the wealth
and resources of others. This is the
best year in over a decade for your
partner to earn more money.
PISCES
(Feb. 19 to March 20)
What a wonderful year for
Pisces people to marry. It’s also a
great year to enter a partnership; and
a great year to improve an existing
partnership.

Top-of-mind awareness (TOMA) is defined this way:
"The first brand that comes to mind when a customer is asked an unprompted question about a category. The percentage of customers for
whom a given brand is top of mind can be measured."
TOMA has also been defined as "the percent of respondents who,
without prompting, name a specific brand or product first when
asked to list all the advertisements they recall seeing in a general
product category over the past 30 days."

The duo of McBryde and

Rangers hire new pitching,
hitting coaches to complete staff
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Rangers have hired former reliever Doug Brocail
as their pitching coach and Anthony Iapoce
as hitting coach.
With those moves and the promotions of
Triple-A coaches Brad Holman and Justin
Mashore, the Rangers completed manager
Jeff Banister's on-field staff for next season.
Brocail was Houston's pitching coach
from 2011-13, then a special pitching adviser for the Astros in 2014. He was pitching coach at Double-A Corpus Christi last
season.
Iapoce spent the last three years overseeing the Chicago Cubs' minor
league hitting program.
Holman will be bullpen
coach for the Rangers after
three seasons as pitching
coach at Triple-A Round
Rock. Mashore will be the
assistant hitting coach in
the majors after the last two
years as Round Rock's hitting coach.

The Eagles will have to
watch out for the one-two
punch duo of quarterback
Colt Garrett and running

The Roosevelt running

On

the
Roosevelt Eagles’ leader

Texans look to improve
in 2nd half of season
HOUSTON (AP) — J.J.
Watt isn't happy with the 3-5
record of the Houston Texans.
Still, the star defensive
end can't help but be encouraged because despite their
first-half struggles, they're
tied with the Colts for first
place in the AFC South.
"You're sitting here at
your bye week, halfway
through the year, with everything in front of you," Watt
said.
The Texans regrouped
for a win over the Titans last
week after an embarrassing
blowout loss to Miami in
Week 7. Watt said the team
had to block out the negativity of what happened in that
game to move forward.
"It's just a matter of not
listening to everybody out
there who thinks you should
be packing it in or thinks it
should be over and who has
this kind of end of the world
mentality," Watt said. "It's
just a matter of believing in
yourselves and we did that
all last week, when most
people think we shouldn't
have."
Houston's problems in the
first half of the season largely
stemmed from its inconsistency at quarterback. Brian
Hoyer won the job out of
camp, but was benched during the season opener after a
terrible start. Ryan Mallett
took over, but he had a tough
time as well and Hoyer soon
had the job back.
The Texans had to sign
T.J. Yates last week after cutting Mallett after he missed
the team's charter flight to
play the Dolphins and caught
a commercial flight to meet
the team in Miami.
After a winding NFL
career filled with ups and
downs, Hoyer seems undaunted by the challenges he
faced in the first half of the
season.
"Things didn't always go
the way we wanted them to
in the first eight, but we're in
a position to go out and do
some really good things in
the second half of the season," he said. "I'm fortunate
to be the guy that's going to
be able to do that.
One player who didn't
seem to be affected by Houston's quarterback woes is
receiver DeAndre Hopkins.
The third-year player has
stepped into the spotlight this
season with Andre Johnson
gone to play for the Colts.
Hopkins is second in the
NFL with 870 yards receiving and his six touchdown
catches are tied for second in
the league.
"His ball skills are tremendous and he's learning
the offense," receivers coach
Stan Hixon said. "He's playing multiple positions in the
offense, so he knows what
everybody's doing, which
helps him a lot. He is just
gaining a lot of confidence
along the way."

The Borger Bulldogs
season will be on the line
tonight as they make the
long trip to Seminole.
With a win the Bulldogs
will clinch a playoff berth,
and will play the winner of
the Andrews versus Clint
game. However, there has
been some confusion as
to what happens if Borger loses. If Borger drops
the contest tonight there
will be a three-way tie
with Seminole, and Lubbock Estacado. With three
teams being tied, and two
spots in the playoffs, the
ones to advance will be
decided by a “coin flip”
process.
The Bulldogs will have
to watch out for Seminole
quarterback Brett Hicks.
Hicks is a solid signal-
caller, and is protected by
the versatile center, Morgan Davison. Running
back Jarryd Karr anchors
the Indian running game.
On defense, defensive
lineman Steven Day is the
go-to guy up front. Another defensive lineman that
can cause havoc is Johnny
Fehr.
The Bulldogs know
coming into this contest
tonight that they control
their own destiny. Borger
will try and take the “coin
flip” off the table with a
big road win tonight. Kick
off is set for 7:00 p.m.
