PRL MEDIA GUIDE 2016
SATURDAY 30 JULY
START & FINISH ON THE MALL 17:00-18:45 (APPROX.)
New for 2016 is the Prudential RideLondon Classique, which
replaces the Prudential RideLondon Grand Prix women’s
criterium race that has been held for the past three years in
and around St James’s Park.
PRUDENTIAL RIDELONDON // 41
Now a women’s UCI WorldTour event, the Prudential
RideLondon Classique will feature 22 of the world’s top
women’s teams racing 12 laps of a spectacular new 5.5km
circuit in central London. The circuit begins on The Mall in
St James’s Park, goes up Constitution Hill, turning at the
top to come down and onto Birdcage Walk, then passes
Big Ben and turns left onto Whitehall and right onto the
Strand before turning again to come back up the Strand,
through Trafalgar Square, Admiralty Arch and back onto
The Mall. See route map on pages 49 and 50.
In a landmark moment for women’s cycling, the prize
money for the Prudential RideLondon Classique will be the
highest ever offered anywhere in the world for a women’s
one-day race and matches the prize money offered at
the world’s richest one day men’s race the next day – the
Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic. The total prize pool
for each race is 100,000 Euros.
The individual winner of the Prudential RideLondon
Classique wins 25,000 Euros in prize money and the
winning team is awarded 10,000 Euros. There will be
three Continental Tyres Sprints classifications in the race
offering a further 12,600 Euros in prize money.
The Continental Tyres sprints, new for 2016, will take
place at the end of laps three, six and nine. The first four
riders will get points for each of the three sprints. The rider
with the most points from the three sprints wins the overall
Continental Tyres Sprints competition, and a share of the
12,600 Euros prize fund.
The race offers a superb opportunity to witness and
support the very best of professional women’s cycle racing
and will be televised live on BBC Two from 18:00-19:00
(subject to change so please check schedules).
At the inaugural criterium event in 2013, Britain’s double
Olympic champion Laura Trott – supported by her Team
Wiggle Honda and GB teammates Joanna Rowsell and
Dani King – beat national criterium champion Hannah
Barnes in a dramatic sprint finish on The Mall to win the
event. The following year, Team Wiggle Honda retained
the title as Italy’s Giorgia Bronzini (a two-time world road
race champion) outsprinted world and Olympic road race
42 // PRUDENTIAL RIDELONDON
champion Marianne Vos in another breathtaking finish,
winning by less than a quarter of a wheel. The third winner
of the women’s race was Velocio Sports rider Barbara
Guarischi who snatched the win by half a wheel from
defending champion Bronzini in a bunch sprint for the line
in 2015.
#PEDALPARITY
Prudential RideLondon has launched #PedalParity, a new
social media campaign to celebrate its landmark decision
to award the women’s elite race the same world record
one day prize pool – 100,000 Euros – as the elite men’s
race, the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic which
takes place the following day on Sunday 31 July.
The equality in pay is a first in women’s cycling with
Prudential RideLondon leading the way in redressing the
financial gap in top level men’s and women’s events.
The campaign was recently launched with the support of
2015 winner Barbara Guarischi, former champion Giorgia
Bronzini and Britain’s world champion Lizzie Armitstead.
Hugh Brasher, Event Director, said: “We believe in equality
in sport. We are proud to have made the prize money in
the Classique exactly the same as the Classic, thereby
making it the richest women’s one-day race in the world.
“With our #PedalParity campaign, we hope to encourage
other events to follow our lead and recognise that the
world’s best women riders should be rewarded equally
with the world’s best men.
“They train as hard, race as hard and commit themselves
to their sport just as the very best men do.”
Rochelle Gilmore, the owner and manager of Wiggle
High5, said: “To have parity will get people to view
women’s sport as a professional sport and I hope
it will open up the dreams for women wanting to
become professionals.
“Prudential RideLondon is giving women the opportunity to
go home with the most prize money they have ever won on
the day. It makes the event really special.”

SUNDAY 31 JULY
06:00-09:00 QUEEN ELIZABETH OLYMPIC PARK
FINISH: FIRST RIDER IN THE MALL AT 10:10, LAST RIDER AT 17:00 (APPROX.)
Celebrating the legacy for cycling created by the London 2012
Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Prudential RideLondonSurrey 100 takes place on closed roads in the capital and
Surrey’s stunning countryside. With leg-testing climbs and a
route made famous by the world’s best cyclists at the London
2012 Olympics, it is a truly spectacular event for all involved.
PRUDENTIAL RIDELONDON // 55
More than 26,000 cyclists are expected to be on the Start
Line for the 2016 Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100.
Riders will start in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and
finish on The Mall in St James’s Park, central London,
shortly before 150 professional cyclists race in the
Prudential RideLondon-Surrey Classic on an extended
version of the route.
This will be the fourth running of the sportive. The
2014 event was particularly memorable as strong winds
and heavy rain meant the route had to be shortened to
86 miles.
CHARITY
As well as the personal challenge of completing the route,
participants’ involvement will also benefit good causes.
Since the first Prudential RideLondon in 2013, the amount
raised for charity has gone up each year, smashing
records. In 2013, £7+million was raised which went up to
£10+million in 2015 and £12million last year.
Riding for charity is a key element of the sportive; the
Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 aims, over time, to
become the largest charity fundraising cycle event in the
world. Thousands of cyclists will be supporting hundreds
of charities and will ensure the event becomes the charity
fundraising equivalent of the London Marathon (the world’s
largest annual one-day fundraising event) on two wheels.
Furthermore, since the first Prudential RideLondon in
2013, The London Marathon Charitable Trust has handed
out grants to 58 organisations in Surrey totalling more
than £1.5million.

2016 CHARITY OF THE YEAR: WELLCHILD
WellChild is the national charity for sick children,
dedicated to transforming quality of life for seriously ill
children and their families.
Growing numbers of children and young people across
the UK are living with serious illness or exceptional health
needs. Many spend months, even years in hospital simply
because there is no support enabling them to leave.
WellChild puts the practical and emotional support in
place to give these children the best chance to thrive safe at home, together with their families.
Money raised through the Prudential RideLondon 2016
partnership will help WellChild extend vital support to the
growing numbers of children and families across the UK
that desperately need help.
•
Bringing children home – WellChild Nurses work across the UK to support children and families on their journey from hospital to home.
•
Empowering families – Giving family members the confidence and skills to care for their child safely at home.
•
Making homes safer – Volunteer projects to create safer and more suitable home and garden spaces for children with exceptional health needs.
•
Supporting families – Connecting families across the UK for mutual support and advice through online and face-to-face groups.
•
Creating lasting change – Improving life for all through research, projects and by giving families a voice for change.
WellChild wishes all of its #TeamWellChild Riders the very
best of luck. Your help can significantly improve lives for
thousands of children and young people across the UK
living with serious illness and exceptional health needs.
Together, we can give them the home and family life they
deserve. www.wellchild.org.uk

at www.PrudentialRideLondon.co.uk on Monday 8
August 2016.
FAMOUS FACES
Once again the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 has
attracted some famous faces from the world of sport and
entertainment.
The speed on some of the descents of the Surrey Hills
should prove no problem to former Formula One driver
Mark Webber who is taking on the challenge for the
first time.
Webber finished third in the F1 drivers’ championship
on three separate occasions and is the reigning FIA
World Endurance champion for Porsche alongside Timo
Bernhard and Brendon Hartley.
Webber said: “I enjoy my cycling so I’m definitely looking
forward to it, it’s a really good course. I hear there are
some great people taking part, but crucially it’s the spirit of
the event that’s the most important thing.
England’s World Cup-winning rugby captain from 2003
Martin Johnson returns for a third year, and former Welsh
rugby captain Colin Charvis will ride for a second time.
Two Olympic gold medallist rowers will be taking to the
Start Line. Mark Hunter, who won gold in 2008 and silver
in London four years ago, will be riding for SportsAid,
while Tim Foster, who won gold in Sydney in 2000, returns
once again.
From the world of entertainment, R&B singer Lemar will be
taking on the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 for the
first time. Lemar rose to fame after finishing in third place
on the first series of British talent show Fame Academy.
Since then he has had seven top 10 UK singles and sold
more than two million albums.
Also from the world of music, the 2013 X Factor winner
Sam Bailey takes a break from the touring production of
the musical Chicago to return to take on the 100-mile
challenge for a second time.
“Cycling these roads while they’re closed is a unique
opportunity for all of us; here’s to a tail wind for everyone.”
