President's Message....
The little Red Wagon became a symbol of the Christ Child Society as the result of a Christmas wish!
Dear Christ Child Society members,
We are in the middle of the Christmas season, a very blessed time of the year, and all it brings….giving,
sharing, and receiving; family; friends; traditions; decorating; parties; shopping; Christmas movies and
books; and all the year-end things that need to be taken care of….in other words a very busy time for all!
As you take a few spare minutes to read the newsletter you will see that our Chapter is very busy also –
The Shower of Love, the Day of Prayer, and an annual Fall Luncheon at OLG. In this newsletter, you’ll be
meeting two members on a more personal level, AND….you will read about some of our projects and upcoming events – Teddy Bears; a shopping trip for flannel for Layettes; our two fundraisers - Casino Night
Non-Event and the Red Wagon Fare; and an update on our newest project – Comfort Quilts. But you’ll
also find our normal areas as well – Prayer Corner, Memorials and Remembrances, “Where’s the Money?”, just sayin…, and updates to the Directory. And last, but not least, you will find your Board of Directors’ Christmas message!
Msgr. Hever and Sister Linda have written articles about Advent and Christmas – be sure to read them, as
they put an excellent perspective on everything else that we always seem to be dealing with this time of
year. Our thanks to both, for helping us remember the real reason we celebrate Advent and Christmas.
Enjoy the newsletter and enjoy each other always! I know I enjoyed contributing to this newsletter and I
always enjoy meeting, talking, and working with all of you. After all, we all stand side by side pursuing
Mary Virginia Merrick’s vision of serving children in need.

to have a spectacular event on March 28th.
… Our President - Grace Cooper along with the
Board of Directors met with the Chapter Advisors
(Susan De Queljoe, Jay Binsfeld, James Gallagher
and Paul Gerber) in November. Their advice in aiding and continuing the efforts of our chapter is
valuable and most appreciated.
… Sadly, we are still reeling from the loss of Msgr.
McMahon - but we know he is watching over the
projects and programs of our chapter from Heavens Gates.

Spiritual Advisors Appointed
Most of you will remember meeting Msgr. Thomas Hever and
Sister Linda Campbell at our November General Membership
meeting. On November 18 Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted appointed Msgr. Hever as the Spiritual Advisor for
our Chapter and Sr. Linda Campbell, O.S.B. to
assist in this role.

Christmas Traditions
Christmas is a contraction of “Christ’s Mass,” which is
derived from the Old English Cristes mæsse (first recorded in1038).
The letter “X” in Greek is the first letter of Christ, and “Xmas” has
been used as an abbreviation for Christmas since the mid 1500s
Bolivians celebrate Misa del Gallo or “Mass of the Rooster” on
Christmas Eve. Some people bring roosters to the midnight mass, a
gesture that symbolizes the belief that a rooster was the first animal
to announce the birth of Jesus.
The traditional three colors of Christmas are green, red, and gold.
Green has long been a symbol of life and rebirth; red symbolizes the
blood of Christ, and gold represents light as well as wealth and royalty.
Spiritual Advisors’ Messages
Christmas Greetings from Msgr. Tom Hever
Christmas is certainly a special time for Christ Child Society
members. The name says it all. Just as Christ was welcomed into the world by Angels, Kings and Shepherd, so too
many infants today are welcomed into the world by the
work of the Christ Child Society. Besides the work of the
Society, it would be good for members to visit the Crib in
your local Parish Church over the holidays and pray for
children in the world who today are suffering or in need—
both physically or emotionally. Prayer and action are the
two pillars of the spiritual life.
Dear Christ Child Society Members,
December is rich with many religious opportunities to celebrate, reflect, and grow on our spiritual journey. We begin
with Advent where we take four weeks to prepare for the
birth of our Savior and brother, Jesus. What will be your gift
for Jesus this year? How will you prepare for the true
meaning of Christmas? We celebrate the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 8 th and
12th respectively…Mary is our model of Openness, Gentleness, Hope, and Gratitude. How can you reflect these values in your life during this month? St. Juan Diego witnessed
humility in every dimension of his life. Can you grow in
humility this month as you witness to your family, coworkers, and neighbors?
It is our choice to live the month of December, strengthened
by the scriptures, positive role models, and balance. May
this time be your best ever!

“Silent Night” was first sung as part of a church service in Austria. A
guitar was used because the church organ was so badly rusted it
couldn’t be played. No matter how Christmas traditions started, we
all share the magical birth of Jesus, our “Christ Child”. May you and
yours share a wonderful holiday and remember those children that
we serve.
REMEMBERING MSGR.
JOHN McMAHON
It is with great sadness that the Christ Child
Society of Phoenix not only lost a Priest that
understood the mission and vision of the Society, also we are deeply saddened that we lost
a dear friend. Msgr. John McMahon prayed
with us, laughed with us, listened to us, built us a place to
meet (at Mt. Claret Retreat Center) and more than anything
else - encouraged us to continue the work we do in the community for the children we serve. We know we were in his
heart and now our hearts are broken - because he no longer
walks among us. God rest his soul.

SERVICE PROJECTS
Comfort Quilts
MaryEllen Pendleton
Our newest project Comfort Quilts is off & sewing at all 3 Layette locations. Comfort Quilts is headed by
Mary Kaspor & Elaine O’Toole and has a budget this year of $1,000. Quilts in past years were made using
leftover layette fabrics & generous donations. Hard working & generous sewers donated 750 quilts last
year without a budget. Kits will be provided on a limited basis this year, but please let the Layette site
chair know if you wish to make a quilt & fabric may be provided as long as funds are available.
During October & November CCS members including Elaine O’Toole, Mary Kaspor, Grace Cooper and
Lucy Kramer visited 6 sites to determine if the agencies were using our quilts & what their needs might
be. All 6 sites gave a resounding –YES
Quilters at Mt Claret & Corpus Christi will provide quilts to Aid to Women’s Center, 1st Way Pregnancy,
Life Choices Women’s Center & Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Quilters at OLG Monastery will provide
quilts to New Life Center & SW Family Advocacy.
Quilts will also be added to our Layette bags as needed. Last year we supplemented over 160 quilts as we
did not have enough afghans. This will continue and we will provide quilts to our Layette bags before
distributing to the quilt sites. Extra fabric is always appreciated by the quilters so keep us in mind if you
hear of someone who has a stash to donate.
Thanks to Mary & Elaine for chairing this project & making sure the children of Phoenix know they are
blanketed in love.

What comes to mind when you think of a group of dedicated women that trace and cut patterns, sew,
stuff, and glue things?
Puzzled???
One more clue… these women seem to have great big smiles on their faces… and very often - you hear
loud bursts of laughter from their corner of the room. O.K. you guessed it… it’s the members of the Teddy Bear committees at Mt. Claret and OLG.
They continue to make their delightful bears and pillows for inclusion in the over 750 Bed Time Bags that
go out to the 6 agencies serving children in crisis.
We are very grateful to these charming dedicated members. Thank you Teddy Bear ladies… thank you!!

OLG FALL LUNCHEON
The Fall Luncheon for Quilters, Layette and
Teddy Bears was held on November 19 and
hosted by the Red Wagon Circle A big thank
you to Barbara Badger and Farida McMaster,
Chairs, for making the day so festive. The tables were beautifully decorated and the array of
foods were delicious. Several Board Members
were in attendance and introduced to our members. Thank you to everyone who attended
and participated in the raffle and games. It
was a beautiful day!!

Layette
The past couple of years Carol Engel has gone in days before
Black Friday to make selections on flannel to be used in layettes
for the coming CCS year. She calculates just enough to last until
the next Black Friday. Elaine O'Toole, Suzanne Ell and Elida
Desmond have joined her in the early morning to collect and
transfer to Mt. Claret. They stand in line drinking their coffee
talking and laughing with ladies they don’t know but have one
common thread. They have had a lot of stares when pushing
carts stacked high with flannel.

This year Carol, Suzanne, Elaine and newbie Mary Jo Rowen
joined Carol in selecting the flannel, Elida came in after they
loaded their cars and Carol checked out. They caravanned to
Mt. Claret to unload and filled all the empty shelves.

Starfish Award

We live in a world of instant communication and spreading
the word about the Christ Child Society of Phoenix is so important. Without a web site we would be lost in the world of
communication. Our web site is the key which opens our
doors to new members and fund raising that supports the
many programs and projects that benefit the underserved
children in our community.
We thank Bev for the time she has devoted towards developing our web site. She communicated with members in order
to obtain the information most important to our chapter. She
monitors the web site and is called upon to update the site
with upcoming events and newsworthy items to our membership.
The Christ Child Society is just one of the many organizations
that benefits from her willingness to help where and when
called upon. The Starfish Award symbolized the difference
she has made for our chapter and in people’s lives.

Starfish Award
Rose Mary Miller
Rose Mary has been a member since 2011, and has impressed so many with all the talent, time and energy she
devotes to the Christ Child Society. She is well organized
and is the guiding light for our members at Our Lady of
Guadalupe Monastery. Coordinating the cutting of fabric
(delivery & pickup) sewing, turning and pressing and whatever it takes to insure that there is enough work ready to
keep the ladies busy to complete the finished product. She
worked making Quilt kits for the last year and half and has
been generous with her donations for fabric and flannel
when supplies run low. She pitches in when someone is
missing and makes sure the everything runs smoothly.
She is responsible for overseeing the making and delivery
of items for young children and their families.
You will see Rose Mary at our General Membership meetings, Fund Raisers, Red Wagon Fare; and functions, Day
of Prayer; just to mention a few. Christ Child Society, St
Vincent de Paul, and St Thomas Aquinas Church have the
good fortune of having Rose Mary as their member.
Rose Mary is a behind the scenes worker who is dedicated
to the cause of helping less fortunate families and children.
Thank You Rose Mary for making a difference in
people’s lives.

DID YOU KNOW —
Darlene Blizzard was introduced to the Christ Child Society by Penny Wilson and has been an active member for 18 years. She was
born in Iowa, settled in Phoenix Arizona, married, raised two daughters, and has five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Darlene was one of the original members of St. Matthew’s Book Club
Buddies and continues to be an enthusiastic volunteer, a program
that has been ongoing for 11 years. She was a chairperson for
Miss Mary’s Closet, a program that furnished clothing to children
through Black Family Services and School as well as other organizations throughout the valley. She was a member of the Board as
a Treasurer in 1997; she attended Layette cutting fabric and took
part in many dinners, programs and projects of the Christ Child Society, too many to list.
Volunteering is Darlene’s life; she has the talent and time and over
the years has devoted herself to the Christ Child Society and the
Alzheimer’s Society. Her dedication to the Christ Child Society has
earned her the Starfish Award in September 2003.
Thank You Darlene for being a Good Friend to the Christ Child
Society and the underserved children in our community.
Meet Sharon Casey —
Sharon is one of our newest members and our current Assistant
Treasurer
Born in Monroe, Wisconsin, Sharon moved to Arizona in 1969. In
her early years her first interest was Interior Design but soon entered the world of computers as a Data Entry Operator and ended
her career with the State of Arizona in 2011 as a Computer Program
Analyst. Since Sharon retired, she has begun a pet sitting service
with her sister, Cheryl.
Sharon was introduced to Christ Child Society through an article in
the St. Thomas Aquinas Church bulletin. She attended a sewing
group at the Bearly Stitchin Sewing Center and soon learned it was
members of the Christ Child Society. On several occasions Sharon
has had the good fortune to receive donations of fabric from her
friends and acquaintances from which she has made several quilts.
If you ask Sharon “how many quilts have you made? “ she will say,
“I have not kept count.” Sharon will tell you she sewed before she
could write.
Thank you Sharon for joining the Christ Child Society and all the
wonderful work you do.

PROGRAM SERVICES
Shower of Love—Wallie Sweeney
Many thanks to all who participated in the Shower of Love at Pat Wilson’s lovely home. Thanks to Margie
Hubbard and her wonderful cooks, 90 guests were treated to a sit-down meal served outside in beautiful
weather. Through your generosity, the Welcome to America Project was given 514 pieces of children’s
clothing for their Clothes Closet. When she saw all the donated items on display, Welcome to America
Project Family Advocate, Ophelia Bachini, commented that the children usually get used clothes, so this
is a special treat for them thanks to our generous members.
Christmas Giving—Wallie Sweeney
By the time you read this, we will have completed our third annual Christmas Giving. All 100 ornaments
were distributed and the toys, games, dolls, books and puzzles will be given to the Arizona Association of
Foster and Adoptive Parents. AZAFAP is a non-profit, statewide organization, founded in 2003 to serve
the foster and adoptive families who care for Arizona’s most vulnerable children and provide foster, adoptive and kinship care. Their members are all volunteers. Thank you to all who were able to participate in
this wonderful program. Special thanks to Elida Desmond for making all the ornaments to hang on the
tree and also for doing the shopping for those members who made cash donations.
You Are My Hero—Johanna Warner
To honor hero Julie Berkel, we have two unique programs for presentation to St. Catherine of Siena
School and St. Matthews School. The programs – Crabitat Colony and Green Pieces Cartoons.
For Crabitat Colony, we have been in contact with Anita Elco and Katherine Stelmach, authors of the
book Who’s in That Shell? It is a story about five hermit crabs that co-exist in a crabitat colony. Anita and
Katherine demonstrate what is necessary for hermit crabs to survive and thrive by building a crabitat colony within a tank (a large fish tank). This educational program will reach children from grades 1 to 4 and
will focus on a reading and science experience.
Green Pieces Cartoons is the work of Drew Aquilina, a cartoonist who created Green Pieces Green from
the Pond Up, a book of cartoons. He and his wife Lisa have created the cartoon characters Iggy, Radic,
Cabby and Roc who will delight the children. They will demonstrate the step-by-step process in creating a
cartoon and will empower the children to express themselves through drawing and cartooning. This program, reaching children from grades 5 to 8, will focus on how to protect our environment.
Currently we are working with the schools to set dates for these presentations. During the month of December, as a Christmas Gift from the Christ Child Society, we will present the schools with a certificate
about the upcoming presentations.
We have also presented these programs to Queen of Peace School, Mesa, and are currently awaiting approval from the school. In the past we have not considered Queen of Peace School, but we hope to add
them to our schools receiving a “You Are My Hero” Christmas Gift from the Christ Child Society.
Apostolic—Karen Maywalt
Our Day of Prayer was held on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception at St. Patrick’s in Scottsdale.
Seventy-five women enjoyed a delicious continental breakfast prepared by Cathy Giedraitis, Gwen Jacober, Helen Schnieders and the Silver Belle’s Circle. We were so fortunate to have Kevin Saunders, a renowned Bible scholar, as our speaker. Our day concluded with Mass.

TEN WAYS TO GET INVOLVED IN CCS PHOENIX

Be an email Buddy for someone who doesn’t have access to email – contact Grace at Qwer1@cox.net for details.

Get a group of friends together, go to lunch, and discuss the raffle prize you’d like to donate to the Red Wagon Fare. It
doesn’t have to cost much – maybe you could offer your time by providing a lesson or class on how to do something…
sewing, crocheting, how to play bridge, how to make and decorate the best cupcakes, etc. Or you and your friends
could host an English Tea Party. Be creative and most of all Have Fun!

Welcome one of our New Members and ‘show them the ropes’!
4.
Try joining a new Committee or Service Project…you’ll be surprised what you can learn how to do and how much
you’ll enjoy it.
5.
Ask someone to join you the next time you come to Mt. Claret.

Be an advocate for the work we do for children.

Giving and Giving, it never ceases to amaze me!
Once again, Costco has been gracious enough to provide a $50 Gift Card for needed items for Story Book Friends. Taking the
time to fill out the application is such little thing to yield such a generous donation. Thank you Costco for helping our children
that we serve!
Can you believe it!!! The children at St. John Vianney and St. Agnes school were delighted with the hand puppets that the associates at Kohl’s help make for us. And the best part is that Kohl’s has sent the Christ Child Society of Phoenix a check in the
amount of $500 for the “privilege” of cutting them out. You can be assured that they will have many projects waiting for their
help in 2015! Although Pen Pals has not been active, Story Book Friends and Book Club Buddies continue to nourish young
minds with our reading programs.

Recipes from Shower of Love
Hot Chicken Salad
2 cups chopped, cooked chicken breasts
1 8 oz. container sliced mushrooms, sautéed slightly
1 cup cooked rice
1 tsp. salt
1 7 oz. can sliced water chestnuts
1 cup sliced celery
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 can cream of mushroom soup
1 tsp. minced onion
Mix all together and place into a 9 x 13 baking pan.
Topping:
1/4 cup butter melted
1 cup crushed potato chips
1/4 cup chopped pecans
Place on top of chicken mixture and baker at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.
Apple Cake with Rum Sauce
3 eggs
1 cup oil
2 cups sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. cinnamon
2 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. vanilla
1-1/4 cups chopped nuts
4 cups grated apples
Beat eggs and oil together until foamy; beat in sugar. Combine soda, salt, cinnamon and flour, mixing
well. Stir into egg mixture; add vanilla. Batter will be stiff. Mix in apples and nuts. Turn into a greased
13 x 9 baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 to 60 minutes. Cool
Rum Sauce:
1/2 cup brown sugar
1/3 cup butter or margarine
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup cream
Bring to a boil and cook 4—5 minutes. Add a few drops rum flavoring or real rum (keep tasting) to your
taste. Kahlua can be substituted or just plain vanilla extract.
Serve cake with rum sauce.
