CREATURE FEATURE
Warthogs
A Friend for “Relana”
by Brannon Moore, Marketing Specialist
The Memphis Zoo recently added
another unique creature to its family.
“Daphne,” a one-year-old female warthog just
joined the residents of the Zoo’s Round Barn.
She comes from Detroit and joins the Zoo’s
only other warthog, an older female
named “Relana.”
While warthogs are members of the
domestic pig family, this pig doesn’t look like
anything you’d see around the farm. The
name “warthog” was given for the wart-like
bumps on the large, flat forehead. These
bumps are actually for protective purposes,
much like their four sharp tusks. Warthogs are
covered in a thin, course coat of hair, with a
thick mane along their backs.
Daphne is just over a year old, born in
April of 2013, and is already weighing in at
119 pounds. This may seem big, but she is
actually a bit small for a warthog, as some can
weigh up to 250 pounds. Warthogs are also
surprisingly fast and can reach speeds of 30
miles per hour.
“Daphne is very outgoing and really wants
to be Relana’s friend,” said Memphis Zoo
Assistant Curator of Mammals, Gail Karr.
“As a young warthog, she’s very active.”
Warthogs are primarily found in Africa
grazing the plains in search for food. They
mostly eat grass and plants but will use their
snouts to dig up roots and bulbs. While
warthogs may appear fierce, they would
actually rather flee than fight. They have
poor eyesight but their excellent hearing and
sense of smell make up for this.
During Africa’s dry season, the warthog
is adapted to living with little or no water for
extended periods of time. Much like your
average pig, the warthog likes to lay down and
roll in the mud to stay cool. This also works
as an insect repellant. Birds also will help with
insects, some even riding on their back as
they move around.
Daphne and Relana currently reside at the
Round Barn at the West end of the Zoo. Be
sure to look for “the hogs” on your next visit.

One Man’s Journey to Find a Long-Lost Friend
by Laura Doty, Communications Specialist
(left) Johnny Lombard
(back left, yellow shirt)
was part of a crew of 30
people who rescued Andre
from a swamp after
Hurricane Katrina.
(right) Lombard, along
with 10 other people,
including Andre’s trainer
(pink shirt,) worked
tirelessly to pull Andre
through the muck and
to safety.
4
“Andre” the sea lion has a wonderful life. He
sunbathes, swims in his private pool and has beautiful
women surrounding him. Life, however, wasn’t always
easy for Andre. In fact, a little over nine years ago, it
was a nightmare.
Before coming to the Memphis Zoo, Andre was a
resident of a marine wildlife facility in Gulfport,
Mississippi. Like so many things on the Gulf Coast,
the Gulfarium where he resided was destroyed during
Hurricane Katrina. Luckily, a few good men made
sure Andre didn’t meet the same fate.
“The call came out, and it actually said it was a
whale in a marsh,” Johnny Lombard remembers.
Lombard, a Rowan County, North Carolina sheriff’s
detective, was one of the first responders during the
aftermath of Katrina. Lombard and his team were
paired with the Ohio National Guard, and were mainly
responsible for patrols. However, when the whale call
came out, they jumped into action.
“Andre’s trainer went out with us. There were two
possibilities,” Lombard explains. “It could be Andre,
or it could be Bert (another sea lion at the Gulfarium).
It turns out, it was Andre.”
The team secured a jon boat, cut off the first
quarter of it, and retrofitted it with Andre’s kennel.
When the trainer called out for Andre, Lombard said,
“He came running. He knew we were there for him.”
A team of 30 people helped in the rescue mission.
About 10 of those helped push the boat through the
marsh back to land. But Andre still had a long way
to go.
“We got a call from our colleagues down in Gulfport,”
Matt Thompson, Director of Animal Programs at the
Memphis Zoo, said. “They asked if we had room to
house a male sea lion. We didn’t really, but we wanted
to help, so we made it work.”
Unfortunately, Northwest Passage was still in the
construction phase and wouldn’t open until 2006. So,
the Memphis Zoo staff decided to put Andre in one
of the empty pools in the Hippo House. He made
the five-and-a-half-hour trek north to the Memphis
Zoo with his handlers.
“He adjusted quickly,” said Thompson. “He had
lost so much weight (about 400 lbs.), we were just
trying to get him to pack on the pounds. But,
typical Andre, he had his own ideas.”
Being a very intelligent sea lion, Andre began
to get bored with just eating. He wanted to do
something and be rewarded for it. He began
displaying behaviors that other Memphis Zoo sea
lions couldn’t do — such as dance, do handstands
against walls and blow out large puffs of air.
“We already knew he was special,” said
Thompson. “But that’s when we realized how
special he really was.”
Lombard already knew how special he was.
In fact, Lombard searched for Andre for eight long
years before recently re-reading the Ohio National
Guard Newsletter from the Hurricane Katrina
times. In an article about Andre, he found his
answer — Andre had been moved to Memphis.
After contacting the Memphis Zoo and finding
out Andre was still here, Lombard began making
plans to visit. In April, Lombard, along with his wife,
Ashley, his 11-year old daughter, Chloe, and his
in-laws, Jeanne and Tony Shaver, visited Andre.
After enjoying the 3 p.m. sea lion show,
Lombard’s long wait was rewarded with a special
behind-the-scenes meet-and-greet with Andre. He
also got a specially commissioned painting by Andre, A close-up of Andre, during transport.
who’s quite the artist.
“Our whole reason for coming to Memphis was to
see Andre.” Lombard says. “To see him is more than
enough, but to have him paint for me, it’s great.”
It certainly adds a nice, finishing touch to a story
that started with so much despair.
For your chance to see Andre, as well as our
other sea lions, purchase your tickets for July’s

Celebrating 50 years
by Laura Doty, Communications Specialist
Fifty years ago, Lyndon B. Johnson was president.
Goldfinger, the classic 007 movie, was released in
theaters. Muhammad Ali was still known as Cassius
Clay and a young African elephant was born.
“Tyranza,” or “Ty” for short, turns 50 this year. The
story of Ty is an interesting one. Originally a trained
animal with Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus,
Ty came to the Memphis Zoo in 1977, at the age of 12.
“Ty wasn’t suited for circus life,” Houston Winbigler,
Assistant Curator of Mammals, said. “But when she was
given a routine, and cared for by the same people here,
she thrived.”
And thrive she did. African elephants are social
animals. Ty quickly became the “dominant” female in
the herd — whether it was a herd of humans, or a herd
of fellow elephants.
Ty currently resides with two other female elephants,
“Gina” and “Asali.” According to Winbigler, Ty acts like
Asali’s mother. In fact, elephant keepers refer to her
affectionately as “Mama Ty.”
“You must earn her approval,” Winbigler said.
“In her early days at the Zoo, Ty was always the last
elephant you learned to take care of, for she demanded
respect. In return, she’s respectful to those around her.”
Matt Thompson, Director of Animal Programs and
former large mammal curator, agrees. According to
Thompson, Ty is the “confident presence in our trio
of girls.”
“She has a stately demeanor,” Thompson said.
6
That stately demeanor can turn silly when she’s
playing, though. Two of Ty’s favorite activities
involve water — she loves to wallow in mud pools
and loves to swim in the pool in the exhibit,
especially if it’s raining.
“She looks like a small submarine (when she’s
under the water),” Amanda Hadicke, lead elephant
keeper said. “The first time I saw it, I thought it was the
funniest thing. All you could see was her bottom and her
trunk above the surface, just like a little periscope.”
Ty uses her trunk for various activities, including
savoring her favorite foods. According to Hadicke,
you can tell when Ty’s enjoying something she
is eating.
“She loves the occasional watermelon or jelly
bean,” Hadicke said. “When she really enjoys
something, she savors it. She smells it for a long time,
puts it in her mouth, and then closes her eyes. They
begin to flutter, too.”
We know something else that Ty and her fans will
enjoy savoring — cake! Join us Saturday, July 12, as we
celebrate Ty’s 50th birthday with a special birthday
celebration. See the bubble to the right for details.
Fifty years ago, there were roughly 50,000
elephants in the African country of Chad. Today,
there’s an estimated 1,200. In 50 years, it’s estimated
that elephants, including those in Chad, will be extinct
in places they once roamed freely.

Zoo News
A Big Bundle of Zoo Joy
Everywhere you turn, there is a new
face to welcome to the Zoo family this
summer. When it comes to Zoo babies,
good things come in little packages, like
our tiny meerkat pups. But they also come
in great big, six-foot, lanky packages, like
our giraffe calf. Big and small, short and
tall, these new births will fill us, and
hopefully you, with a bundle of Zoo joy
in 2014!
“Mpingo,” the newest addition to the
bonobo group, is a bouncing baby boy who
was born just after Mother’s Day this year.
He joins his half-brother “Mobali,” who just
celebrated his first birthday. “Tamu” is our
new male giraffe calf, born on exhibit in
front of dozens of visitors May 23. These
not-so-little guys are almost six feet tall at
birth. Visit him soon, because like all giraffe
calves, he’s growing fast!
Other Zoo babies include “Jester,”
our male bongo, our meerkat pups, “Rico”
and “Billy,” and several prairie dog babies.
But it’s not just babies making grand
appearances at the Zoo. We have some new
arrivals from other zoos, including the new
warthog at the Round Barn, a new skunk at
Animals of the Night and soon, there will be
Fishing Cats at Cat Country.
Zambezi Update
Construction is officially underway for
the all-new Zambezi River Hippo Camp
set to open in spring 2016. You may have
noticed a large construction area where
the old bear moats used to be. Zambezi
is being built on old exhibit space. We
will keep you updated as the project
continues. Thank you for your support
and for following this campaign for a new
home for our hippos.
