We had a relatively small turnout at the club campout but all who attended had a great time. I just returned from my lunch ride to the Grumpy Troll and I must say I was pleasantly surprised with the turnout. See more details within the newsletter. It is hard to believe June is over and we are on to July. I know many members are planning to attend the MOA rally in Montana. I am looking forward to the trip. You may need to be a little patient in receiving next month’s newsletter as several contributors will be returning from the rally at deadline time. Christine is our ride captain for July. Look for details in the newsletter. We are still looking for a ride leader for the after-breakfast ride from Doggett’s to Feurer’s. Let Mark Doggett or me know if you would be interested. I hope to see you all at the meeting Friday. Until then, ride safe. -Doug Secretary’s Report * Highlights from the June 5, 2015 Club Meeting Meeting called to order at 8:00pm. Minutes read. I was pleasantly surprised when we totaled 10 riders departing Black Canyon Coffee at 10:30am. We made our way south and west passing through Palmyra and then west through Indianford. We worked our way slowly north as we headed west through farm country arriving in Mount Horeb just before 1:00pm. One rider needed to return home leaving 9 of us for lunch. The weather, the roads, the food and the company were all great. The attendees included 7 club members as well as 3 guests. The members joining me were Mike Cohen, Mike McArthey, Kevin Pepin, Jeff Bacon, Tim Koester and Brian Manke. The guests were Martin Burmeister, Mike Yenter and Mike Thorsen. UNOFFICIAL RIDE REPORT: NFP RIDE – June 13th Led by Karen/Helen Jacobs – Report by Becky Policht On Saturday, June 13th, Karen/Helen Jacobs led an NFP (LOL) WOM ride through the northern Kettle Moraine. The day started out just like our attitudes, a bit gray and lousy. We met at Starbucks near Port Washington and Brown Deer Roads. From there Karen led us north. Along the way we were temporarily separated because of a bicyclist laying in the road and being attended to by paramedics. I can’t say for sure but I’m pretty sure the roar of our bikes caused the rider to panic and go down; or it could have been that our ride leader kicked him over. Once we regrouped, we continued north through the twisties and hills of the NKM. Somewhere along the way, Joanne ran over a chipmunk’s tail and I gave a cow the evil eye, causing her to turn tail and run - much to the enjoyment of Karen Smith. Our ride ended in Dundee at the Hamburger Haus, home of the world’s biggest single scoop cones. In attendance were: Karen “Helen” Jacobs, Christine “Duke” Ledezma, Joanne “Slayer” Peterson, Joy “Worthy Matron” Kuenzi, Karen “Garbage Bag” Smith and Becky “Crab Bait” Policht 5 OUT WONDERING Beemer Buzz • July 2015 Down Under with Grandpa Tumbleweed (aka Harvey Reed) Numbers are boring but necessary, so lets get them over with. Two week Fred Rau tour of New Zealand, about $10,000 all-inclusive except gas, booze and lunches. (Yes, that Fred Rau, one of my favorite motorcycle journalists. You can find him here: fred@fredrau.com) The bike I selected was a BMW F700GS. Now ad $1800 airfare for round trip in some of the most uncomfortable seats imaginable. Our group of 10 riders met in suburban Auckland, NZ's largest city. We spent the first day recovering from jet lag and taking a short ride to accustom us to riding on the “wrong” side of the road. No problem for me as this was my 4th trip down under, but I remember the first time it took me two days to get my brain to stop screaming “wrong, wrong!” The first full day was to be the longest and most challenging, with an extra 3 hours added to include the Coromandel Peninsula, I'm told this one of the 10 best motorcycle roads in the World. Can you say Twisties? I was glad I had the F700 instead of something heavier. We wound up in Rotorua after over 450 kms, most of which were extreme twisties. NZ is not a good place to learn to ride a motorcycle,I recommend at least 5 years experience before you tackle NZ. That night, we attended a sort of dinner theatre, with the Maori people recreating their life style from centuries past. About the lodgings: They were all first class, with on site restaurant and cocktail lounge, a good place to swap stories with the other folks on the tour. And so it went for two weeks, every day filled with scenic wonders, twisty roads, and even the coffee breaks carefully arranged by Fred, who was a very attentive host. Of special interest was the one night farm stay, when we stayed in a farmer's home and had the evening and breakfast time to visit. Perhaps the most scenic location was right at the base of Mt. Cook, their tallest peak in a range named The Southern Alps. You will recognize it from the Lord of The Rings movies, that's where they filmed much of it. If you do decide to go, remember that December, January, and February are their peak season. I recommend that you book at least 6 months ahead. A guided tour is not for you? Te Waipounamu Motorcycle tours, also known as nzbike@motorcyle-hire.co.nz will work with you anyway you want, including just renting you a bike. After the tour was over, I kept the bike for another week, and rode from Christchurch in the South, all the way North to the famous 90 mile beach before returning the bike in Auckland. They had booked the lodgings for me so all I had to do was connect the dots each day. This was a whole lot cheaper because their was no sag wagon or tour guide, and the lodgings were more like what I would choose on my own. Got a bucket list? Put “ride New Zealand” at the top. 6 INFO / EVENTS Beemer Buzz • July 2015 Wisconsin Grand Chapter Order of Eastern Star presents S aturday, August 8, 2015 All proceeds to benefit Wisconsin VA Voluntary Service at the medical facilities in Madison, Milwaukee, & Tomah Open to all vehicles, but m otorcycles preferr ed!
