In the Land of a Thousand Lakes ...
… the Müritz National Park spreads over 322 square kilometres and is one of the most beautiful
natural areas in northeast Germany, famed for its crystal-clear water and magical landscape. The
National Park includes a 500 m wide strip along the East shore of Lake Müritz.
More than 100 lakes in the Müritz National Park exceed one hectare in size. Extensive pine forests
and bogs characterise the area of the National Park to the East of Lake Müritz, which forms the larger
part of the park.
The smaller area around Serrahn features impressive old beech forests in a hilly landscape with many
smaller lakes and bogs. Together with four other areas in Germany, the Serrahn beech forest is
nominated as a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site.
The Müritz National Park is famous for its large numbers of impressive bird species. At no other place
in Germany do so many sea eagles, ospreys and cranes breed as in the Mecklenburg Lake District
and the National Park. In autumn, thousands of cranes gather on the East shore of Lake Müritz.
With the establishment of Müritz National Park in autumn 1990, these unique natural treasures were
placed under special protection. We invite you to experience, under-stand and enjoy the Müritz
National Park region and meet the people living here.
The Region ...
... of Müritz National Park is at the centre of the Mecklenburg Lake District, one of the least populated
parts of Germany. Until 1990, the Müritz National Park region with the rural towns of Waren (Müritz),
Mirow, Neustrelitz and Feldberg, was dominated by traditional activities such as agriculture, forestry
and fishing. However, the area’s natural wealth and stunning landscape have made tourism
increasingly important.
Today, visitors discover the National Park on bicycle, hike on trails with a total length of 450 km or take
a canoe tour on the Upper Havel River. Our Rangers welcome guests to several National Park
Information Centres and invite them to join guided tours. In Waren (Müritz), the fascinating Nature
Discovery Center Müritzeum contains attractions including a unique aquarium area.
As an outstanding destination for nature tourism, the National Park region offers a wide variety of
hotels and restaurants, guest houses, apartments and serviced facilities, providing cosy accomodation
and unforgettable nature experiences.
Between May and October the Müritz National Park Ticket offers environmentally friendly travel in the
National Park on an hourly bus service from Waren (Müritz) to Rechlin. Combined with a boat tour on
Lake Müritz and the free bicycle transport, it makes a perfect day trip to explore the Mecklenburg Lake
District.
Since 2005, a group of 40 Müritz National Park Partners have pledged their support for the landscape
and nature of the National Park region. These motivated enterprises seek to ensure that the National
Park region’s natural wealth is preserved for us and our descendants.
