THE CAUCA VALLEY
The sugarcane industy, which is located in the upper Cauca
River basin, has 12 sugar mills that process 60,000 t of cane
per day from around 200,000 hectares of sugarcane growing
in high- to medium-quality soils and with approximately 300
days per year to harvest. The rainy seasons are from late
March to May and from October to early December, with an
average of 1600 mm rainfall per year.
The Colombian sugar industry reaches high productivity
levels as the result of optimal crop production, harvest
practices and factory processes.
Cali is the capital of the Valle del Cauca Province with a
population of over 2.5 million and is one of the largest
cities in the country with one of the fastest growing
economies and infrastructure. The city was founded on
25 July 1536 by the Spanish conqueror Sebastian de
Belalcázar. The city is approximately 1000 m (3280 ft.)
above sea level; the average temperature is 32°C.
In the Cauca Valley, approximately 100 km west of Cali
and crossing the Western Andes mountain chain, lies
the country’s main seaport in the city of Buenaventura
on the Pacific coast.
•
PROVIDENCIA SUGAR MILL
This sugar mill is located 40 km from Cali, the capital
of the Valle del Cauca Province, and 12 km from the
city of Palmira.
On 12 April 1926 Modesto Cabal Galindo founded the
agroindustry “Central Azucarero del Valle S.A.” Later,
in 1954, the original name was changed to
Providencia Sugar Mill S.A.
In 1991 the sugar refinery became part of the
biggest sugar industry in the country benefiting
from great technological advances and changes to
its organizational structure. It has an area of
influence of more than 25 thousand hectares of
sugarcane.
The sugar refinery processes an average of 8500 t
of cane a day, production of 4.5 million Tn. of sugar
and 76 million liters of fuel alcohol annually.
•
MANUELITA SUGAR MILL
Founded on 20 April 1864, Manuelita is the
oldest and one of the most important
Colombian agroindustrial complexes, with
headquarters located in Palmira on a large
bend in the Cauca River Valley (Km 7 via
Buga).
Manuelita processes
9600 t of sugarcane
and produces
300,000 liters of
ethanol per day.
There are more than 3400 workers, of whom
80% reside in this locality; while the
remaining 20% come from the neighboring
municipalities of El Cerrito, Candelaria, Cali
and Pradera. This agroindustry cultivates
more than 24,000 hectares of sugarcane, of
which 80% is owned by producers-suppliers.
•
CENICAÑA
Based on the industry’s technological priorities,
the Center carries out research and has research
support services
The experiment station is located in the small
town of San Antonio de Los Caballeros (La
Florida, Cauca Valley), where the administrative
and research offices, the library, the glasshouses
and the labs are found.
The Colombian Sugarcane Research Center
(CENICAÑA) is a private, nonprofit corporation,
founded in 1977 by the Association of Sugarcane
Growers
of
Colombia
(ASOCAÑA)
in
representation of the sugar agroindustry located
in the Cauca River Valley. CENICAÑA generates
technology to ensure the Colombian sugar
industry’s competitiveness and profitability
•
INCAUCA
Started on 29 July 1963, INCAUCA
S.A. is an agroindustry dedicated to
processing sugarcane to produce
sugars, fuel alcohol and energy
Incauca is located in El Ortigal in the
municipality
of
Miranda,
Cauca
Province, some 50 km from the city
of Santiago de Cali. There are 12
towns from the provinces of Cauca
and Valle del Cauca.
There are over 35,000 hectares of
sugarcane, which produce around
14,000 t of sugarcane and 300,000
liters of ethanol per day.
