The trail runs on abandoned rail lines where the rails and ties have been removed, leaving a raised bed of gravel and sand. In some areas the trail has been upgraded with crushed stone and other amenities. THORNTON The scenery along the trail varies between open farmland, naturalized meadows, and wetlands with beaver ponds, cedar thickets, creek valley, and hardwood bush. Six scenic trestle bridges cross the creek within 2 km north or south of Cookstown. In both Cookstown and Thornton visitors to the trail can take a break at the pavilions, enjoy the tree spirit carvings or get an ice cream or cold drink. Several quaint shops are open for the curious and both fine and casual dining are only minutes away. The total distance of the trail is 15 km. It is 9 km between Thornton and Cookstown and takes about 2 to 2 1/2 hours to walk at a moderate pace. The surface is suitable for mountain bikes, but can be a bit soft in places for narrow tires on road bicycles or strollers. Many people bring their dogs along on the trail and are asked to pick up after their pets and keep them leashed. Much wildlife can be encountered on the trail including rabbits, deer, raccoons, porcupines, beavers, foxes, turtles, groundhogs, and numerous birds. Horses may also be seen on the Innisfil sections of the trail south of Cookstown and north of Thornton. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the trail except maintenance vehicles and snow mobiles in the winter. ATVs and dirt bikes are prohibited on all sections of the trail and will be fined when caught. The tree spirit carvings of the Thornton Cookstown Trail. Thornton artist Colin Partridge has created some special art for visitors to enjoy on their treck on the trail. Colin has been carving tree spirits for several years and donated his talents for two special carvings which have been installed in Thornton and in Cookstown. According to mediaeval legend, people believed that evil spirits lived in the dense forests where men hunted. It was believed that when men went out to gather food and wood and did not return that the evil spirits of the forest had taken them. However, people also believed that the trees maintained the most powerful and good spirits. So, before starting on their journey, the men would knock on the trees to wake up the sleeping spirits to protect them. This is where the saying " knock on wood" or "touch wood" came from. Visitors to the Thornton Cookstown trail are invited to wake up our tree spirits to accompany them on their trip. We know our spirits have a great sense of humor, gentle wisdom and will bring luck to your day.
