people live more healthfully,
comfortably and independently
are, left, “bionic” gloves for
people suffering from arthritis;

S
USAN AYERS WALKER OF ATHERTON unabashedly calls herself “The Gadget Queen.” And
given her decades-long career in leadingedge technology, it seems only right that she
would stay on the lookout for the latest hightech tools to create an efficient environment
in which to live, work and play.
Over the last several years, the same curiosity, determination and innovative spirit that fueled her successful career also has led her to issue a challenge to Silicon
Valley: Grow up.
She has — and she’s done so in the company of some
78 million of her fellow baby boomers, who now range
in age from 42 to 60. But though baby boomers remain
the population’s largest demographic, Silicon Valley is
still designing its gadgets and
working tools for 12- to 26year-olds, Ms. Walker says.
“And that doesn’t help me
with my cell phone — I can’t
see the damn buttons.”
Ms. Walker has done more
that just challenge the Valley,
where she logged in countless working hours in years
past. To encourage and support
high-tech companies’ efforts
to develop products designed
to help the aging remain active

and live independently for a
longer time in their own homes,
she started a nonprofit company,
called SmartSilvers Alliance.
Through the company, Ms.
Walker and her business partner, Mike Sarfatti, have worked
to match up high-tech companies with venture capitalists for
product research and development, helped the researchers
put trials together to test the
products, and helped educate
consumers about what’s available to help them or their aging
family members.
At SmartSilvers’ Web site,
smartsilvers.com, you can find
tools and devices ranging from
a talking prescription pill bottle
that tells its owner what’s inside
and when to take the medication, to “bionic” gloves to help
people with arthritic hands
continue to do things such as
gardening or everyday tasks.
There are home health monitoring systems, a device that
allows the user to send and
receive e-mails without a computer, cell phones for the hardof-hearing or equipped with a
diabetes-monitoring system, a
voice-responsive remote control
for your television, and programs
to improve mental agility.
Some of the products cater to
people on the younger end of
the “50-plus” population that
Ms. Walker supports through
SmartSilvers. There’s a heartrate monitor that slips into
a sports bra, and “high-tech
clothing” that lessens the impact
of women’s hot flashes — a label
called “Hot Mamas’ Pajamas.”
“We go out and find products,
then educate people on (their)
availability,” Ms. Walker says.
“We hope to stimulate people
to say, ‘Maybe I can take care of
myself if only I can remember to
take my medication,’ or use some
of the other assistive gadgets and
devices that are out there.”
Heading the parade
Born in 1946, Ms. Walker
is at the head of the parade of
baby boomers marching toward
their 60s. She naturally considers herself a likely consumer
of some of the products she
supports and promotes, but
her interest in her chosen work
developed years ago.
“I had to intervene in my
parents’ lives (because of their
failing health) fairly early on
— they were in their 60s,” she
explains.
The experience opened her
eyes to the realities and uncertainties of aging long before
many people have to consider
them. “I realized at a fairly early
age: That’s going to be me somewhere down the road.”
As time went on, she found her-
self being tapped into as a resource
for friends who had to intervene
with their own parents as their
health declined to the point they
couldn’t remain independent.
These experiences led her to her
present role as an educator and an
advocate for innovative solutions
to problems traditionally encountered by the aging body.
In addition to her work
with SmartSilvers Alliance,
Ms. Walker also writes for the
AARP magazine as a freelancer.
In a recent column for the
magazine — one that appeared
in similar form in the Almanac
earlier this year — Ms. Walker
wrote of the baby boomer generation: “... (G)iven a choice,
we would prefer to stay out of
managed care as long as possible and will look seriously at
technology to help us maintain
that independence, our health,
mobility and quality of life.”
She says the insurance industry
needs to wake up to the benefits
of emerging high-tech products
that let people take a more active
role in monitoring conditions
and their overall health. She
wants insurance companies to
offer coupons for discounts on
such products and lower rates for
people using them.
SmartSilvers, she says, is a
champion pushing such policies in addition to supporting
development of technologies to
benefit the aging population.
“Nothing ever happens without a champion,” she says.

The whole family is musical.
Tetsu’s wife, Mayumi Ishihara,
is an accomplished pianist
who introduced her daughter
to music as soon as she could
walk and talk. “I was 2 or 3
years old when I learned piano
in Japan,” Tomoko Ishihara
says. “When I was 10, I was
exposed to the school orchestra and picked cello as my
instrument.”
She had considered violin,
but “I liked playing cello,”
she adds. “I wanted to be as
good as, or better than, my
father. I wanted to be unique.”
Her mother helped for years
by accompanying her on the
piano.
Ms. Ishihara also had several
cello teachers, two in Japan. The
first, she says, had a traditional
European style; the sounds were
rigid and difficult to play. She
preferred her second teacher, who
was “a lot more musical, lyrical,
passionate.”
It was Carol Reiss of the
San Francisco Conservatory
of Music who taught her basic
technique and to whom she
would return for lessons if she
had the time, she says.

Performance: ‘Viva L’Italia’
The Peninsula Symphony
opens its 58th season with
“Viva L’Italia” at the San
Mateo Performing Arts Center on Oct. 13 and at the Flint

Cupertino on Oct. 14.
The concert, directed by
Mitchell Sardou Klein and
assistant conductor Geoffrey

and baritone Daniel Narducci

Now, she says: “Relaxation is
a big part of why I do it. I also
socialize with people from the
symphony.” She is interested,
she explains, in the different
perspectives fellow musicians
gain from playing their various
instruments.
At NASA Ames, she uses
nanotechnology to try to recreate conditions the Mars rovers
transmit to earth. “Mars is a
hot topic,” she says. “All the elements for life are there.”
Mr. Ishihara got his start
with the cello in his high
school orchestra in Japan.
The visual element of music
attracts him, he says, adding that the first concerto he
played “was like falling leaves
in autumn.”
Both musicians cite a range
of composers and cellists they
admire and who have inspired
them. Most exciting to them,
Ms. Ishihara says, is the musical expression of cellist Yo-Yo
Ma — from his interpretation
of classical music to his “Silk
Road” and “Soul of the Tango”
recordings.
“I’d like to do tango,” she says.
“It’s a passionate way of playing.”
Mr. Ishihara likes “Silk Road”
for its “Oriental flavor.” He
says he was excited to see the
acclaimed cellist when he performed in San Francisco. “He’s
not so heavy, but gives a strong
impression to the audience. He’s

very elegant,” he says.
When father and daughter practice at home, they play “in different rooms, at different times.
There are no great pieces for two
cellos,” Mr. Ishihara says. So the
only time they play together is in
the symphony orchestra.
Five years ago, the Ishihara
family started, along with a
neighbor who is a violinist, a
group called the Dunsmuir
Trio, named after the street
on which they live. Mayumi
Ishihara plays piano, and her
husband and daughter trade off
playing cello.
Two or three times a year, they
give concerts in their home to
groups of about 20 people. “Live
music is very different from
recorded music,” Mr. Ishihara
says. When playing with other
musicians “new ideas emerge.”
Mr. Ishihara first played in
the Peninsula Symphony when
he came to the area on business in 1989. But business took
him back to Japan in the early
1990s.
Since 1996, he has played with
the orchestra consistently. His
daughter signed on in 2000
while she was home for summer
vacation from Reed College in
Portland.
Ms. Ishihara says she’s excited about the upcoming symphony concerts. “They will
open with an Italian theme.
It’s a great way to begin the
season.”

Friday and Saturday, Oct. 13,
14, 20 and 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the

“The Village of Idiots.”
The play revolves around Leon
Tolchinsky, who after landing
a terrific job as a teacher in an
idyllic Russian hamlet, arrives
to learn of a 200-year old curse
that makes every man, woman
and animal born stupid. He also
learns that he has just 24 hours
to break the curse or he will
become stupid as well.
Why does he stay? He falls in
love. Can he break the curse and
get the girl? Find out.
Drama teacher John Loschmann directs “Fools” with a

ESTATE OF JEFFREY LEW
CASE NUMBER 115708
To all heirs, beneficiaries, creditors, contingent creditors, and persons who may be
otherwise interested in the will or estate, or
both, of JEFFREY LEW.
A PETITION for probate has been filed
by: YING ZHOU in the Superior Court of
California, County of SAN MATEO
THE PETITION for probate requests that
YING ZHOU be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the
decedent.
THE PETITION requests authority to
administer the estate under the Independent
Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to
take many actions without obtaining court
approval. Before taking certain very important
actions, however, the personal representative
will be required to give notice to interested
persons unless they have waived notice
or consented to the proposed action.) The
independent administration authority will be

cause why the court should not grant the
authority.
A HEARING on the petition will be
held on October 30, 2006 at 9:00a.m. in
Dept.14, 400 County Center, Redwood City,
CA 94063.
IF YOU OBJECT to the granting of the
petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written
objections with the court before the hearing.
Your appearance may be in person or by
your attorney.
IF YOU ARE A CREDITOR or a contingent creditor of the deceased, you must file
your claim with the court and mail a copy to
the personal representative appointed by the
court within four months from the date of first
issuance of letters as provided in Probate
Code section 9100. The time for filing claims
will not expire before four months from the
hearing date noticed above.
YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the
court. If you are a person interested in the
estate, you may file with the court a Request
for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing
of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets
or of any petition or account as provided in
Probate Code Section 1250. A Request for
Special Notice form is available from the
