September 2016 Vol. 6, No. 9 September 1, 2016 Meet the first four Emperors of Rome and explore the lives of some of history’s most powerful — and interesting — people in this course that details the most famous and impactful of Rome’s leaders, from the First Emperor, Augustus, to Tiberius, Caligula, and Claudius. Thursday September 8, 2016 1:30 PM I, C LAUDIUS by Robert Graves The novel I, Claudius—along with its sequel, Claudius the God and His Wife Messalina, depict the turbulent life of a Roman emperor, reconstructing the decadence of the Roman world. Considered an idiot because of his physical infirmities, Claudius survived the intrigues and poisonings of the reigns of Augustus, Tiberius, and the Mad Caligula to become emperor in 41 A.D. The novels were serialized in a 1976 BBC production of the 12episode masterpiece, I, Claudius, which in turn was inspired by the 1937 unfinished movie starring Charles Laughton. One of the really remarkable books of our day. New York Times READ the Book WATCH the Movie Lecture 10. POWER & POISON: AGRIPPINA & CLAUDIUS September8, 2016 Documentary.
