Popcorn delivers…..quality program
Thank you to all units that participated in the 2015 Popcorn Sale. The Popcorn Sale is
the largest fundraising opportunity for a unit to fund its entire yearly program for youth.
Winner of the Disney World Drawing
Congratulations to Samuel Fast earned a Trail’s End College Scholarship and won
the family trip for 4 to Disney World in Orlando, FL. Every Scout who sold over
$2,500 in gross sales this fall were eligible for the Trails End Scholarship program and
were entered into a drawing for the trip to Walt Disney World. Every additional $250 a
Scout sold over the $2,500 earned them an additional entry in the drawing. There were
317 entries in the drawing. Seventy-five Scouts throughout the council earned these entries and more importantly, money for higher education.

Online Leadership Training
All Cub Scout Leader training is available for you online. Training for all Den Leaders, committee
members, Cub Masters, and more can be taken online at www.myscouting.org. Log in and check out
the E-Learning section of the Training page (be sure to add your BSA ID# to your profile—this keeps
your records accurate!). Youth Protection Training is also available in the same location.
All Scouts deserve a trained leader and being properly trained will allow you to better lead your youth
in addition to making your role easier and more fun! Let your Cub Master know when you have completed your required training. Additional training is available in person throughout the winter—be sure
to check the district calendar and the Leadership Training section at www.siouxbsa.org.

Lewis & Clark Scout Camp is gearing up for a great year!
What a year 2015 was at camp and we look forward to another in 2016. Camp director, Amy
Comp, and her husband, Mr. HAB director, Lee, did great service to yet another summers worth of
campers. The bad news is, they are moving on this year and will be greatly missed. If you see them,
please thank them for all their efforts. The good news is the 2015 program director, Ryan Schloss, has
stepped into the camp director role. If you were in camp last year and had a chance to see Ryan in action, you will know how well he does with the Scouts, parents and staff. Ryan has some great ideas for
camp and will be implementing some this year. One big change will be the addition of the Watersports
Merit Badge. Scouters, get ready to wakeboard!
We have some major changes to camp this summer and the leaders guide is being worked over
and in finishing stages as we speak. This is a big project, especially for a new director and we thank
you for your patience while Bryan, Will and Glenda work to make this project high quality. Some of
these changes include dates, fee structures, programs, etc. Other changes include a chance for our
Scouts to create a video log of their L&C experience, a GaGa ball pit and (fingers crossed) new giant
chess pieces! Not sure what GaGa ball is? I wasn’t either but after a quick visit to YouTube, we found
out this game is sweeping the nation. It’s a high paced mix of kickball, dodgeball and tag that promises
to be a real addition to our facility.
Please see below for some further information. We are proud to say that the Sioux Council still
offers an excellent camp at a cost that is extremely competitive in terms of price point.
Lewis and Clark Scout Camp is located 10 miles west of Yankton, South Dakota on the shore
of the beautiful Lewis and Clark Lake, part of the Missouri River. In operation since 1957, Lewis and
Clark Scout Camp is host to over 2000 Scouts and Scouters during summer camp and even more people take advantage of the camp during the school year. With over 400 acres of camp property, there is
plenty of room to explore and enjoy nature.
Lewis and Clark offers an extensive summer camp program with over 40 merit badges, COPE, Sailing,
Challenge Valley obstacle course, Buckskin Adventure and many more fun and exciting programs.

FOS
It’s the time of year again when we do
our Family Friends of Scouting fundraiser. We will be working with all of
our unit leaders to set up times for our
presentations again this year. If you
want to pledge in advance, you can
call Jeff and take care of it over the phone. Doing that will be a big help in assisting us to reach
our FOS goal faster!
Scout-O-Rama
We are very excited to have the Scout-o-Rama
coming up very quickly. This year, it will be on
April 16th. That is a date change from what is on
the calendar. We will have plenty to do this year.
There will be a merit badge that the Boy Scouts
will be able to complete that day and also a belt
loop that the Cub Scouts will be able to get that
day. Stay tuned for more information and start
thinking of great booth ideas.
District Dinner
This year, we as a district are going to have another district dinner. It should be a great time
filled with fun and great food as we look back at
the year we have had as a district. Stay tuned for
more information on this.
Recharter
It’s time to recharter our units! Every unit needs
to have their paperwork in and signed by January
15, 2016. In anticipation for that, make sure to
get this done as soon as possible so this process
will go as smoothly as possible and we aren’t
running around at the last minute trying to get
signatures and everything else that is needed.
Make sure all your leaders are up to date on their
youth protection training so there isn’t any hiccups when it’s time to recharter.

Lewis & Clark Trail winds down 2015
What a year it’s been! Busy, productive, fast, furious and jam packed.
One thing we can’t say about 2015 is
that it was boring. Great volunteers,
community support and an outstanding
program saw our Scouts continue to reap the value of their efforts. We cannot say thank you
enough for all the hard work our volunteers put
in. It isn’t always easy but it will ALWAYS be
worth it for the boys.
It’s a lot of work to keep Scouts running
as parents, leaders or the volunteer who never
sees the spotlight. Please keep in mind the product isn’t the merit badges, advancement or even
the Eagle Ceremony. The product is the boy who
in the future will be a community leader, raise a
family, make a difference or maybe even lead a
Troop. The amount of good you do can never be
quantified and most of our volunteers are too
humble, but please take the time to appreciate
your good work.
2015 was the year of the “WOW” in the
Sioux Council. The Bravo, Sierra, Alpha Camporee was WOW beyond belief. Not only did our
boys enjoy it, but almost 300 Scouts from three
councils and four states took part. WOW indeed!
Our own Missouri River High Adventure Base
hosted a New York contingent for two weeks this
summer. When asked for feedback on what we
could improve in the future, the New Yorkers
said “Nothing, it is amazing”. Another WOW
offering! That Troop has traveled all over to various camps, reserves and high adventure bases
and we ranked right at the top. What a testament
to our staff, the volunteers who log hours at camp
and, of course, Ranger Barry’s crew.
So what can we do to keep WOWING in
2016? Plan ahead, be proactive and keep on doing what you are doing. We are also looking for
some help at the district level. We are currently
looking to recruit an advancement chair, activities chair, VP of Manpower, Day Camp Chair
and FOS captains in all our communities.
Keep in mind these positions are not responsible for doing all related with their
area, rather they spearhead our efforts by
working with others to make sure what
we are doing “WOWs” the Scouts and
communities. These positions are the ones that
really shape our efforts and are crucial to our success. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for individuals who would excel at any of
these roles.

A few thoughts
As we settle in for a new calendar year, I
would like to thank everyone for their
hard work and dedication to the youth of
our Scouting family! Moving into the new year,
I encourage you to share with us all the great
things that are happening in your unit – and ask
that if you need help on a subject to let us know
what we can do to help. All-in-all, it is an exciting time to be serving youth and helping them to
be responsible citizens of our community. Without YOU, that wouldn’t be possible. THANK
YOU!
Recharter
For those that have not completed their recharter,
now is the time to get it in. You should have received a letter in the mail that explains the process and gives you the directions for how to complete the 2014 Recharter. If you have any questions, give Pete a call or email and he will set up
a time for him or a district volunteer to help you.
Remember that if your charter is not complete,
signed and turned in to the office with the money
by January 31st, your unit will no longer be insured in the event that you were meeting and
something happened.

High Adventure Opportunities
The Sioux Council is going to St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands in 2016!
We will go from July 31, 2016 to August 6, 2016, with an approximate cost of $2,025 (a price increase was due to airline costs). This is the new Sea Base expanded
location. The high adventure includes sailing, swimming, snorkeling,
exploring the islands and MORE!
Contact Jason Cruse at jason.cruse@scouting.org for more information.
Only three spots remain!
2017 National Jamboree
We continue to plan for the 2017 National Jamboree,
July 19th to the 29th of 2017. It will be at Summit
Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia. The theme for the
Jamboree is “Live Scouting’s Adventure.” The Sioux
Council has been assigned one Troop and one Venturing Patrol for the Jamboree. What that means is
36 youth for the Troop and 8 for the Crew for a total
of 44. We are currently at 37. If you are interested in
being part of the contingent, contact the Sioux Council Office at 605-361-2697 and put your name on the list. The projected cost is $2,750.
Once you are selected, payments can be made to the Sioux Council. We need to start
our payment program in November to ensure we are paid on time. We need to begin
$150 monthly payments in November, with that bumping up to $175 monthly beginning
in August. Payments are to be mailed to Sioux Council BSA at 800 N. West Ave.,
Sioux Falls SD 57104. Please indicate in the memo of the check participant’s name,
Jamboree, and month of payment. Chad Claude is the Sioux Council Contingent Scoutmaster for the Jamboree, so please ensure he has your email, as that will be the form of
communication he will be using with participants.

Established in 1931, the Silver Beaver Award is presented to Scouters for noteworthy service of exceptional character to youth by the local council. It recognizes efforts above and beyond the expected for a
given position and goes beyond tenure alone. Do you know a Scouter that is deserving of the Silver
Beaver Award?
Now is the time to start working on the application. Applications are due to the Sioux Council Center
for Scouting by February 26, 2016. The Silver Beaver Selection Committee will meet in March and
the awards will be presented at the Annual Council Recognition Event on April 30, 2016. You can
