PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
From HerdQuarters
YEAH! As I write this 70 degree temps are on the way! Getting ready for
quite a year? I hope so. In case you made like a bear and hibernated the
snow filled winter away, let me get you up to speed - it’s 2008 – or the 50th
anniversary of the Impala badge! Fellow ISSCA BODs are in high gear to get
the national event all worked out. Look for an event schedule elsewhere in
this issue. I’m really excited about the “nats” again this year for the folks at
both ISSCA and GRAIL have quite a nice show planned. Gateway Raceway
Park is a great place for THE event of the Summer and the only place you will
find a cure for Impalaitis. GM is bringing a bunch of cars and to
accommodate the venue appropriately the event has been stretched to three
days! I look forward to seeing many HERDers there!
Like ISSCA the HERD Board is busy planning HERDFEST. Details
are coming together and all the information will be laid out in the next
newsletter. I know how fast schedules fill up so keep September 14 th aside
and look forward to HERDFest 2008! ☺
I look forward to seeing you out and about!

HERD Website Update Corner
By Tony Tressel
Greetings from behind the curtain! The HERD Website is coming along nicely. The Garage Forum is also doing quite
well. 2008 promises to be a GREAT season! I'm ready for the shows, races, and caravans. Don't forget to take pictures
and upload them to the Garage Forum. Lets put pictures in ALL the event postings.
Latest news:
- PDF Versions of the SStampede are now available on the Garage Forum. New editions will be available 1 week after being
mailed to the membership.
- Each member has a page of their own. Brag about your ride. List your Mods. Upload some pictures.
The HERD Website has been averaging 1500 visits per week. The Garage Forum is the most popular.

site. Subpages are summarized under the main domain.
What I find quite interesting is 9C1 and the Impala SS Forum refer to us via links and are 2nd and 3rd. That really has a
positive reflection on the club. I have personally read threads on the Impala SS Forum that refer to The HERD Tech Articles
for the answer to a new B-Body owner's questions.
To see the referrals from a Google search isn't really surprising ... but nice to see, just the same. The balance of the 1574
visits probably came from a bookmark in a web browser.

Re: Fuel system issues
“2 -small bolts on the filler neck behind the license plate.
2 -bolts on the front side of the straps.
1 -electrical harness by the filler tube clipped to underside of trunk floor.
1 -vent line clamped
1 -3/8" fuel line pickup (need spring lock disconnect tool)
1 -5/16" fuel line return (need spring lock disconnect tool)
“Pull the fuel lines off first, then harness, then filler neck bolts, lastly strap bolts. Tank empty is maybe
10 pounds with gas it's a 2 man operation to drop it (not literally)
“Don't recommend using incandescent trouble lights while performing repair LED preferred, or
fluorescent only.
”No smoking.....
After all this, replace the frame mounted fuel filter too.” DaN
“That's a good list but you forgot to remove the sheet metal screws running through the trunk floor,
inadvertently into the actual tank.... that were there...to hold something down in the trunk at one time...am I
the only one who has done that?” BV...(not allowed to use most tools anymore....)
“Yes. But, I enjoy "learning from other people's mistakes. Or at least enjoy watching people try to get
themselves out of sticky situations....
“Remember: I'm laughing WITH you, not AT you...A friend in need is a friend indeed.” DaN
“Securing the surface mount speakers of my "state of the art" Craig Powerplay 8 track into the hatchback of
my 76 Datsun 280Z 2+2, Bob Sharp racing (Paul Newman’s choice, before he started making salad
dressing) equipped OH cam valves & springs, 6speed. 130+mph with a straight 6.
“Wow there's not 1 thing listed that still exists. Oh wait Paul Newman does.... I think, kinda. It’s amazing
I didn't somehow feel the 2 layers of metal.” .sds
“So, in other words, BV aint the only one? Small world, eh?” LOL DaN
“Do you mean ain’t the only one that’s drilled into the tank -OR- ain’t the only one who TELLS THE
TRUTH???
“OK so if you haven't done that, let’s hear the MOST STUPID thing you remember you did (course keep
it AUTO related) laugh at me or with me it still makes you live longer.” -sds
“Oh, where do I start?
“Besides the "total waste of money" idiotic things I've bought and never used or usually "couldn't use," I
remember three automotive "painful experiences."
”1. I was trying to "persuade" something under the car with a heavy sledge hammer (swinging the
hammer straight in front of me while sitting on my butt), and of course, missed the target and WHACKED
the inside of my knee joint full-speed. It made a horrible sound as my femur resonated from the blow (It
sounded like a baseball player with a cracked bat.) It HURT really badly. I laid on the cool concrete floor
about 15 minutes because I almost passed-out from the pain.- --Almost puked too. I remember that one too
well. Ouch! I seriously thought my leg broke!
Continued on page 8

”2. I remember working on my 1982 station wagon rear-facing seat. I wanted to run new speaker wires and
decided to take the rear seat out. After a while, I realized there is a "little" torsion bar that helps lift and fold the
seat. For some lame reason, I cut the bar with a hacksaw 'while holding onto the bar.... When the cut went
through, the bar snapped loose and applied all of its tension to my hand, pinning it to the floor of the car. So
there I was, trapped in the back of the wagon, trying to reach other things to pry the bar off my hand. Hurt
pretty bad as my hand turned purple, but that was stupid. I deserved that one.
“3. My scariest one ever: I was removing the cats from my '95 Impala in my garage with an acetylene torch
and a breaker bar. I was having a tuff time heating the nuts hot enough to get them out. So, I turned up the
torch, and proceeded to light the fire wall insulation on fire. The fire accelerated rapidly, and I was lying under
the car trying to blow it out. Didn't work! I ran to the opposite side of the garage, pulled the pin on my little
dry powder ABC extinguisher, and ran back. By the time I started blasting the fire extinguisher, the fire was all
the way up to the hood seal by the wipers and licking at the plastic fuel lines. I unloaded the dry powder
everywhere making a total mess. The plastic fuel lines were pretty warm and soft. That was too close. I then
opened all the doors since it was impossible to breathe in there with all the smoke and fire extinguisher
powder.... WAY STUPID!!!
“Safety first: ALWAYS have a fire extinguisher handy in the garage or home, AND make sure you can reach
it FAST!!!” DaN
“Dang!!!!” Randall
“Oh, I have a couple......
‘1. Just rear ended someone.... light turned green, she started to go, I started to go and then she
STOPPED!!!! WTF????? BAMMMM ---I tie the bumper to the tree at my house and try to pull it out. It doesn't
work. I then unhook it and back up.... INTO OUR OTHER CAR!!!!! I was FURIOUS.
“2. Built a speaker box in my trunk of my Grand Am. Put screws in the right places, no problems until... I
have a flat tire at school and go to take out the spare. Hummmmm, didn't know there was a big metal brace that
sticks up in the inside of the rim. Tire would not come out. I ended up buying another spare from the bone yard
to keep in the car for my trip from MI back to GA. Then I took out the box and cut that brace out.
”3. Most recently I was holding my trouble light with one hand and banging on the exhaust with the other
hand. The light moved and I stuck one of the hooks on the light INTO MY HAND!! It was hanging there and
when I tried to pull it out, It went the wrong way and dug it in a little more. Plucked it out and got to feel the
throbbing for a while... that friggin hurt. Couldn't lift weights for over a week since everything rested on the
puncture spot.
“4. Oooooh, got some more... Was laying under my ZR2 blazer welding new shackles on it and a pea sized
ball of molten weld landed on my arm and proceeded to sizzle its way into my skin. No blood since it cauterized
the wound as it melted into my arm. I had a nice hole in it for 3 months as the skin grew back.
“5. From back in my 96 impala days.... I had a jack that had a slow leak...or so I found out the hard way. I
was under the car and when I tried to get out, I found that the car had lowered itself and pinned me under it. I
managed to squirm my way out, but was freaking out since no one was around to jack it up.... Now I almost
always have jack stands under there.” Brad "sometimes I still do stupid stuff" Oblak
“I have a fire story too... I was detailing the engine bay of my '95 Impala in the garage of a high rise for which I
used to live in River North Chicago. I wasn't able to finish because I had something else to do that day so I left a
large bath towel on the intake manifold (and I think some cleaners and other stuff in the engine bay) and closed
the hood (you know, to keep it all safe in there).
Continued on page 9

“Later that evening I returned to the car (fairly inebriated) and decided to go for a spirited drive. Well, I
got no more than a few blacks away when at a stop light (near Chicago and Clark) people in the car next to me
waved frantically and screamed ’Hey I think your car's on fire!!’ Apparently they could see flames erupting
from the passenger side wheel well. Ignoring them, I drove on until I too saw smoke and smelled burning rubber
-- and not the good kind either. So I pulled over a few more blocks later, opened the hood, only to be met by
billowing flames all through the engine compartment.
”The "Fire Wall" as I call it, worked -- it was REALLY on fire! The washer fluid container had exploded and
fueled the flames and spread the mess all over the engine bay. Soon the hood struts blew from the heat and then
my driver's side tire blew...pretty messy. All this occurred while I stood at the grill yelling at the car, screaming
"why is this on fire??" Then it occurred to me that the towel, then soaked with chemicals, had been in contact
with the headers and started the fire.
”One restaurant owner came rushing in with an inadequate fire extinguisher...sprayed it all over the inside of
the hood -- bad aim I guess.
“Once the hood fell it locked so when the Fire Dept. got there, they tried prying it up, but gave up on that
and stuffed the hose in through the huge hole they made in the grill/radiator.
“Good times...stupid...yeah, I got burned on my forearms too... BV
“I was about to change the oil on my car in my garage. I put a drain pan under the plug and took the plug
out. After the oil had drained, I removed the pan and commenced filling the car with the new oil. You probably
know where this is going ... as I was emptying the fifth quart, I felt something squishy through my old, raggedy,
holy gym shoes.
“Not only did forget to replace the drain plug but I was stupid enough to remove the pan.
“ I didn’t have any more oil and I couldn’t run the car without it. So...I hiked about a mile to the nearest
gas station. Not only did I get ripped off on the high cost they charged, but that $#!t gets heavy after a while.”
