are unique. They are affiliated with The Lutheran Church—Missouri
Synod, and as such they bring a heritage of Lutheran Christian higher
education to their programs. These programs are focused on the liberal
arts tradition while also preparing you for a career of service in fields
ranging from church vocations to biology to banking.

Our Mission
Concordia College Alabama (CCA) founder Dr. Rosa Young
stressed the obligation of service in her autobiography, Light
in the Dark Belt (available from Concordia Publishing House).
She wrote, “‘He that is greatest among you shall be your servant’
is the language of the Great Teacher. To serve is regarded as a
divine privilege as well as a duty by every right-minded man.”
Conscious of the words of its founder but with an ever-present
vision of its future, today CCA’s mission is to “prepare students
through a Christ-centered education for lives of responsible
service in the Church, community and world.” The college,
with its distinctive Christian orientation, offers programs and
services that appeal regionally, nationally and internationally.
CCA’s vision is to “be a diverse, global institution of excellence
and a leader in developing intellectual, spiritual and moral
leaders of Christ-centered justice.” Its recruitment efforts are
directed toward all students who are eligible to enroll and who
can benefit from its services.

Civil Rights
Selma is an important historical
location, connected to events from
the Civil War to the Civil Rights
movement.
Concordia College Alabama,
formerly Alabama Lutheran
Academy and College, evidences
one of the most important and
historically prolific missions of
the Lutheran Church in America. Founded in 1922 by Dr. Rosa
Young, its origin identifies it in
the annals of American history
as a Historically Black College/
University (HBCU). Today, CCA
boasts a student body, faculty
and staff representing a diversity
of geographic, ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, and it
holds the distinction of being the
nation’s only historically black
Lutheran college.
CCA encompasses approximately 60 acres in historic
Selma, the county seat of Dallas
County, approximately 50 miles
west of Montgomery and 90
miles south of Birmingham. It
serves as the gateway to Alabama’s Black Belt.
The impact of Selma’s history
on the Black Belt, the state and
the nation spans from the Civil
War to the Civil Rights movement, serving as the beginning
site for the historic Selma to
Montgomery March.
James Edward Gildersleeve,
(1918-2004) and Ulysses Blackmon (1930-1990), two of the
“courageous eight” and signers
of the letter written by the Dallas
County Voter’s League inviting
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and
the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) to
a mass meeting to defy a court
injunction prohibiting more than
three “Negroes from gathering
in Selma,” were both faculty
members at Alabama Lutheran
Academy and College, now CCA.

The mass meeting culminated in
the events of March 7, 1965, and
became known as “Bloody Sunday,” which resulted in a surge
of national support for the Civil
Rights movement. On August 6,
1965, President Lyndon Johnson
signed the Voting Rights Act
into law.
Founded in 1820 on the banks
of the Alabama River, Selma
boasts the largest contiguous
historic district in the state,
including Bakke and Lynn Halls,
the first two buildings built for
what was then Alabama Lutheran Academy when it moved to
its original campus in 1925. The
buildings are still in use today.
The Selma Military Institute,
which was built in 1905 and later
became known as the United
Methodist Children’s Home, and
its surrounding 37 acres is now
the site for CCA’s administrative
buildings, residential cottages
and Christ Chapel.
Additional Selma historical
sites include the St. James Hotel,
an operational riverfront hotel
built in 1837 and rumored to
have had the infamous Jesse
James as a guest; the DawsonVaughan House, home of Elodie
Todd, sister-in-law of Abraham

Campus Information
Excitement and pride continues
on Concordia’s spacious 187-acre
campus along the Huron River,
due in large part to the July
2013 strategic alliance entered
into with Concordia University
Wisconsin. The union between
the two campuses has provided the vision, leadership and
capital to invest in and upgrade
campus facilities, including a $3
million renovation of the Science
Building with new lecture halls,
classrooms and laboratories. A
Zimmerman Library transformation has allowed for the
creation of a computer sciences
laboratory and the development
of a computer sciences major.
Future work to remodel the
popular Kreft Fine Arts Center
is being considered, while a new
football stadium and field house
expansion is under development
as enhancement of collegiate
athletics continues.
In late September, the campus formally celebrated its 50th
anniversary, which included a
worship service led by the Rev.
Dr. Matthew Harrison, president
of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Campus tours and
an Alumni All-Class Reunion
Banquet were also part of the
weekend festivities. CUAA
currently features three schools:
the School of Arts and Sciences,
the School of Education and the
Haab School of Business Administration.

Discover Your Gifts
You have been given a unique set of gifts — a mix of talents, abilities, traits and personality that
are unique to you. At Concordia University, Irvine, a U.S. News Top Tier Regional University, we
help you discover and develop your God-given gifts in a beautiful Southern California location
and through a distinctive educational experience.
Grace Alone. Faith Alone.
You might be surprised that Concordia University, Irvine, does things a bit differently than
some other Christian universities. For example, you are not required to attend chapel, sign a
faith statement or minor in theology.
As a Lutheran Christian university, we take the idea of “Grace Alone, Faith Alone” to heart.
Watch our “Grace Alone, Faith Alone” video: www.cui.edu/gracealone.
The Core Curriculum
Concordia is among a select group of universities that offers a common, coherent core
curriculum for all of its students. Rather than asking students to cobble together a meaningful
general education experience from a vast array of disconnected courses, our core curriculum
is carefully crafted so that every student sees the purpose of a liberal arts education and grows
intellectually, ethically and spiritually.
Concordia’s Core is comprised of classic liberal arts courses offered in small, innovative learning
communities. Students take Core courses in linked pairs: biology with theology, mathematics
with philosophy, and history with literature. You’ll find that everything connects and meshes
together in amazing ways. Watch how our students experience the Core: www.cui.edu/core.

Application Process
Financing
a Concordia University System Education
A private college/university education is affordable. Colleges/universities publish a list of costs
(tuition, fees, board, room, etc.) but the real cost (price) is individualized based on a family’s
ability to pay the educational expenses.
Financial Aid
Private colleges/universities
provide financial aid to assist
the student financially. In many
instances, financial aid packages
will provide close to half the cost
of the educational expense.
Students should first apply for
financial aid during their senior
year in high school (early in
the senior year but no later than
February).
An important component of
the financial aid application is
the Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA), available
in your public library, in the
school counselor’s office or online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. Much of
the information requested on the
FAFSA comes directly from your
federal tax return. Complete
the family tax return before the
financial aid deadlines.
Some schools require additional information from the
Financial Aid Profile. The Profile
is sponsored by the College
Scholarship Service, whose
guides are available at high
Complete your federal tax return
as early as possible. (If you are
unable to complete your federal
tax return in time to meet the
financial aid application deadlines, estimate the information as
precisely as possible.)
Complete the FAFSA and have
the results sent to the school(s)
to which you are applying. (You
will receive an acknowledgment
after completing the FAFSA.
Verify that the information
shown is accurate and submit
any corrections immediately.)
If required, complete the Profile
and all financial aid application
forms requested by the school.
Schools have their own scholarship funds that most often require
filling out a specific application
form. Remember, each family’s
situation is different. Schools will
require filling out all admission
forms before financial aid packages are prepared and announced.
Schools will notify you of their
admission decisions and make
financial aid offers.
After receiving and accepting
a financial aid award, make a
deposit to the school of choice to
hold your place in the first-year
class. An early down payment
on tuition and board/room will
secure a place in the school.
Flexible Payment Plans
Most schools provide for a flexible payment plan — quarterly or
monthly — to ease the cash flow
burden on the family. Ask the
financial aid officers what school
plans are available.
What’s Included in a
Financial Aid Package?
Using the information you provide on the FAFSA and Profile,
schools calculate a financial aid
package using a predetermined
formula to assess your family’s
financial need and what you
24
should be able to pay. The basic
financial aid package starts with
aid based solely on need. Merit-based awards recognize a student’s achievements — academic
or exceptional accomplishments
— which are exclusive of need.
Financial aid packages may
include the following:
>> Need-based grants.
>> Merit scholarships (based
on standardized test scores;
academic achievement;
exceptional accomplishments
in areas like music, drama,
choir, mathematics, science,
sports, etc.).
>> Federally subsidized, low-interest loans, such as the
Perkins or Stafford loans.
(These loans are repayable
by the student with interest
after graduation or when the
student is no longer enrolled
in school at least half time.)
>> Work-study — the opportunity to take a part-time, on-campus job for a certain number
of hours per week.
Financial Aid Estimator
You can estimate what kind of
financial aid you will qualify for
online at www.finaid.org, using
the site’s financial aid calculator.
For more help in planning your
finances, you can also contact
the school to which you are
applying or refer to the website
for Lutheran colleges and
universities in North America at
www.lutherancolleges.org.
Considering a Career in
Church Work
God’s people join together around Word and Sacrament, reaching out to a lost world.
Dedicated, faithful workers assist and lead people in participating in the fulfillment of the
Great Commission, building up the Body of Christ. The following vocations represent the
many ways in which you can serve the Church in its vital ministries.
Pastor
As pastor, you will be considered
both shepherd and servant of
God’s flock. Through you, God
will carry out His most wonderful work of saving the lost. As
you care for the members of a
congregation, you will be active
in preaching, teaching, administering the Sacraments, visiting
members, comforting the sorrowing, giving godly counsel and
providing a vision of outreach.
You may also serve as a military
or institutional chaplain, a missionary, a church administrator,
an educator or a campus pastor.
Teacher
If you have a passion for working
with students in a Christian
setting, this is the vocation for
you. You will help each student
reach his or her potential while
integrating faith into learning.
You will partner with pastors and
parents in the joy of preparing
students for a life of service to
the Church and world. Teachers
serve in Lutheran preschool, elementary or secondary settings.
You will also be able to use your
gifts and talents in coaching,
music, drama or other arenas.
Director of Christian
Education
These individuals coordinate
with the pastor to focus on
the vision and leadership of
a congregation’s educational
ministries. This can involve all
ages, nourishing children, youth,
adults and family groups in
Christian instruction and growth
in personal faith through Sunday
school, midweek programs,
vacation Bible school, youth
programs or outdoor ministry.
bers. You might also serve in a
mission congregation or develop
cross-cultural outreach in the
United States or abroad.
Deaconess
Deaconess means “servant.”
As a Christian woman in this
role, you will share the Gospel
of Jesus Christ through acts of
human care and mercy. This may
include visiting the sick, teaching
Bible studies or working with
individuals with special needs.
Deaconesses serve in congregations, hospitals and other institutions, inner cities and foreign
mission fields.
Director of Parish Music
Music is a delightful, noble
gift of God to His people. As a
Director of Parish Music, you
will use your talents and spiritual
sensitivity to enhance the music
life and worship experiences in
a congregation. You will lead
choirs, instrumental ensembles
and soloists by enhancing your
congregation’s love for communal worship.
Director of Family Life
Ministry
Families with a strong commitment to Christ and a life of service to others provide a positive
influence in and throughout the
world. As a Director of Family
Life Ministry, you will support
healthy relationships in families.
The Family Life graduate is
certified by the National Council on Family Relations and
equipped to develop and implement programming in a congregation to strengthen healthy
families. This person will serve
as a partner on a congregation’s
ministry team.
Director of Christian
Outreach
As a Director of Christian Outreach, you are a valuable member of the ministry team. Your
primary function is to educate,
mobilize and support parishioners in witnessing, evangelizing
and assimilating new mem-
Lay Minister
Ministry is a team effort. The lay
minister works under a pastor’s
guidance and direction in a
variety of ways. You might be
involved in evangelism, visitation, Christian education, youth

other ministries.

Graduate Programs
G
raduate education in a Christian context focuses on an
education that is able to integrate knowledge with humility,
civility and calling — equipping students to live a life of
learning, service and leadership in their respective positions
and communities.
Most graduate programs offered by a Concordia college or
university are intensive programs with a classroom meeting
once a week, online or a blend of both. The intense immersion
in a subject over a short period of time is what effectively
differentiates undergraduate and graduate education.
The list of graduate programs reflects the needs and interests
of students, most often matching the needs and opportunities
of regional or local communities. The respective graduate
programs are listed by title, degree and mode of delivery.

SPRING 2015
CONCORDIA INTERNATIONAL
STUDIES CONSORTIUM
Concordia University
International Study Opportunities
T
he colleges and universities
of the Concordia University
System have collaborated in the
development of the Concordia
International Study Consortium
(CISC) to promote and support
study in international settings
while still retaining a distinctly
Lutheran ethos in the experience. Through the consortium,
students attending a Concordia
member campus will be able to
study abroad for a semester-long
experience with the value-added
opportunity of guidance by a
faculty member from one of the
Concordias along with other students from within the Concordia
University System. The presence
of a Concordia faculty member will help students view the
international experience through
the lens of a Lutheran Christian
perspective.
Study in international settings
is highly regarded by students,
parents and faculty. In this
global world in which we live,
employers seek individuals who
understand and integrate cultural differences into the work
environment.
CISC Study Abroad Semester
Spring 2015 will be in South Africa at Stellenbosch University.
While studying at Stellenbosch
University, students also will have
an opportunity to participate in a
six-day tour of the Garden Route
and visits to the Congo caves;
crocodile, cheetah and ostrich
farms; an elephant park; the
Featherbed Nature Reserve; and
Tsitsikamma National Park.
The Concordia University
System colleges and universities
also offer study abroad in more
than 25 countries: Argentina,

Republic, England, France,
Germany, Ghana, Greece, Haiti,
Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy,
Jordan, Kenya, Latvia, Morocco,
Netherlands, New Zealand, Peru,
Russia, Scotland, South Korea,
Spain and Vietnam.
Study abroad is, from many
perspectives, a life-changing
experience for students. Other
cultures may be different, but they
are certainly part of the human
experience in a different setting.

The Colloquy Program provides teachers and other church
workers with the preparation necessary to fulfill a ministerial
role in their church and school. The program is offered to
teachers and church workers in Lutheran congregations who
have not had previous opportunity to study Lutheran doctrine at a
collegiate level. The program enrichs these workers’ spiritual and
professional lives, leading them to infuse sound doctrine in their
daily work. For those eligible, the program also leads to rostered
status as a called and commissioned church worker in the synod.

Seminar
Offered to teachers serving in Lutheran schools who are not
eligible for the colloquy program, the Seminar Program seeks to
provide such teachers with an introduction to Lutheran doctrine,
Lutheran thought and the Missouri Synod mission of education.
The service of teachers to their schools can be strengthened by
this study of the Lutheran church and God’s Word. The program
is a blessing to teachers and, through them, the children of their
classroom.
