inging vegetables, racing pigs and a magic
trunk are some of the unique attractions at
this year’s Steuben County Fair.
The fair – which runs from Aug. 18-23 – boasts
something for everyone, according to Manager
Nick Pelham.
“It’s good, quality family entertainment,” Pelham said.
Fairgoers are well-familiar with Rosaire’s Royal Racing Pigs, who are
returning for their 24th season.
Several times daily, the pigs “race”
through a short course to delight of
the crowds that flock to each
performance.
“He sounds his horn and starts
talking and everyone runs over,”
Pelham said.
Also returning is the comedic ventriloquist Sylvia Fletcher and her
Magic Trunk full of puppets.

awyer Brown, a country
band from Florida that has
been touring and recording
for nearly 35 years, will headline the
Steuben County Fair.
The band will perform at 7:30 p.m.
on Saturday, Aug. 22 in the grandstands at the Steuben County
Fairgrounds. Tickets are $20 general
admission, $25 reserved or $30 on
the track in front of the stage.
Sawyer Brown, founded in 1981 in
Apopka, Fla., has 20 studio albums
and more than 50 singles that have
made the Billboard country charts,
including three No. 1 hits: “Step that
Step,” “Some Girls Do” and “Thank
God for You.”
The band received a Horizon
Award from the Country Music
Association in 1985, as well as a
Vocal Group of the Year from the
Academy of Country Music in 1997.

It’s been two years since our last Farm-City Day; an event highlighting the importance of agriculture in Steuben County. We are pleased and excited to announce that
we will be returning to Canisteo, to the Moss-VanWie Dairy Farm. Cliff & Deb Moss
hosted the event just a few years ago in 2011. Look for many of your favorite displays & vendors (maple, ice cream, dairy princess, milking a cow by hand) along
with new attractions and exhibits!
Centrally located on State Route 36, Moss-VanWie Dairy is home to 120 cows and
100 calves and heifers. They have over 300 acres of corn, 120 acres of soybeans and
80 acres of hay.

her top competitive rivals at
the Steuben County Fair.
“It started last year,” John
Brundage said. “(I said) ‘we’re
going to compete, and I’m
going to kick your butt in
spaghetti sauce.’”
It didn’t quite turn out that
way. John’s sauce finished
second or third behind Jo
Ann’s first-place entry.
It’s still a sore subject.

Food Preservation Series
C
ornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County is
continuing its series of hands-on food preservation
workshops with two more workshops on boiling water
canning and pressure canning. Designed to teach people how to
enjoy locally produced food year round, this local food preservation series addresses topics like freezing, canning, preserving
meat, and how to cook, grow with, and preserve fresh
herbs. Workshops will be held at venues throughout the county,
will run from July through November, and will be advertised
through Cornell Cooperative Extension of Steuben County’s
website, www.putknowledgetowork.org.
The boiling water canning method, used to can pickles, tomatoes, fruits, jams, jellies, and other preserves, will be taught by
CCE Master Preserver, Jon Sterlace, on Friday, August 14, from
5-8pm. Pressure canning, the only safe method for canning lowacid vegetables, meat, poultry, and seafood, will be taught by
CCE Master Preserver, Loree Symonds, on Friday, September
11, from 5-8pm. Both canning workshops will be located at the
St. Thomas Episcopal Church at 122 Liberty Street in
Bath. The cost of each workshop, $15 per person, will include
the 3-hour long hands-on experience, a full packet of up-to-date
information, a jar of canned vegetables, and a chance to win a
door prize. Interested participants should register for these
workshops by calling CCE at 607-664-2300, by visiting

Dairy Princess
O
livia Chatain of Arkport has been
named 2015-2016 Steuben County
Dairy Princess. Olivia is the 16-year old
daughter of Richard and Heather Decker of
Arkport and Peter Chatain of Cedar Lane Farm in
Oldwick, NJ. Olivia is currently a Senior at
Arkport Central School. Paige Demun, the 20142015 Princess, crowned Olivia and will stay on the
court this year as Alternate Princess. Other members of the court are: Makayla Haischer, Beaver
Dams; Megan Ross, Troupsburg; Natalie Capluzzi,
Hornell; Emily McCaig, Jasper; and Hannah
Stewart, Cohocton. The Steuben County Dairy
Princess program is one of 35 county programs in
the New York State Dairy Princess and Promotion
Program. The purpose of the program is to promote
the dairy industry and increase milk and dairy
product sales. It is funded by local dairy farmers
through their checkoff investment in the American
Dairy Association and Dairy Council, Inc.

promotes good nutrition.
“There’s a signing corn
cob, fruits and vegetables,”
Pelham said.
All of those shows are
among the fair’s free daily
attractions, which – of
course – include demonstrations, exhibits and
judging in more than 100
classes. Entries were still
coming in as the Aug. 7
deadline approached, and
many categories already
had several entries.
“Exhibits are going to be
up this year. The open class
is doing very well,” Pelham
said.
Of course, no fair would
be complete without carnival rides and games, concerts, food-eating contests,
tractor pulls, horse racing
and a demolition derby. All
are on this year’s fair
schedule.

“The fried bread dough –
I have one a night,” he said.
“The animals, the antique
tractor displays, that type

“It’s a family affair,”
she said.
John’s involvement with
the fair started at a
young age.
“When I was younger, I sold
tickets and whatever I could
do,” he said.
The mother-son rivalry is
helping to keep alive the
canned goods competition at
the fair, which Jo Ann
Brundage said has slowed
down in recent years, largely
because fewer people know
how to do it.
Other categories have seen
the opposite trend.
“The photography has really taken off,” she said, and
“last year they had so many in
the baked goods (competition)
they hardly had enough room

For those who might be
interested in competing in the
future, there’s a wealth of categories to take part in, from
various canned, preserved
items to photography and
other art to vegetables and
honey.
Jo Ann Brundage said the
fair brings is “very well-qualified” judges, who do blind
tests of the items – they can’t
tell who entered what until
after it’s scored.
That’s probably just as
well, as Jo Ann is well-known
by most at this point – though
son John is on his way.
“His dill pickles, I have to
admit they’re pretty darn
good,” Jo Ann said. She noted
she hasn’t entered any of her
own this year.
“She can’t compete with
me,” John quips.
John’s an accountant with
a firm that handles Finger
Lakes vacation properties.
He seems to be doing well
for himself – but he still
grows and cans much of his
own food, an activity many
now
associate
with
a
Depression-era, “save everything” mentality.
“I’ve been gardening my
whole life,” John said. “It’s a
fun hobby.”
He doesn’t eat fresh tomatoes, but he cans his own
tomato sauce.
“I don’t think I’ve hardly
ever had a jar of Ragu
spaghetti sauce,” he said.
John grudgingly admits he
isn’t quite ready to go headto-head against his mom’s
spaghetti sauce … yet.
But how many people have
the courage to even try to
compete against their own
mother’s spaghetti sauce?

teuben County is home to nearly 1,650 familyowned and operated farms, and more agricultural acreage than any other county in New
York. Farmers’ Markets provide opportunities for
many of these farmers to sell their products directly to
consumers. Purchasing food that has been grown and
harvested locally has several benefits, in addition to
providing consumers high quality, fresh food – it
strengthens the regional economy, preserves the natural environment, fosters community growth, and lets
consumers connect directly with local producers.

bordering Allegany, Livingston,
Ontario, Yates, Schuyler and
Chemung counties.
Directions to Fairgrounds:
Take Exit 38 off Rte. 17 or
Rte. 86 proceed down W.
Washington Street, to 3rd
light. Fair Office straight
ahead on left side of E.
Washington St. Fairground
entrances are just past the fair
office, turn left on Rumsey St.
then an immediate left onto
grounds.

entrance is located by taking a
left at 3rd light on Liberty St.
Then right on Chestnut St.
