Yokohama Spring Fair with Flowers and Green 2010
Let’s enjoy a gardening exhibit, stalls selling flowers and plants at a site with 160,000 tulip
flowers.

A bicycle is a convenient mode of transportation that is also environmentally friendly.
However, if you ride your bicycle incorrectly or ignore cycling rules and manners it could
lead to serious traffic accidents. Please get to know the bicycling rules of the road and use
your bicycle safely.
Dangerous Activities on a Bicycle
• Riding at high speed on the sidewalk
Sidewalks are, in principle, for the use of pedestrians. Riding at high speed on the
sidewalk frightens pedestrians and can lead to serious accidents.
• Two persons on one bicycle
Riding with two persons on one bicycle means that it is harder to maintain balance and
the danger of falling off and injuring yourself and others increases, especially if you have
to swerve to avoid danger.
• Riding at night without a light
If you ride at night without a light, you could collide with a person or vehicle and cause
a serious accident.
• Riding two abreast with another bicycle
Riding two abreast with another bicycle creates an obstacle for pedestrians on the
sidewalk and for vehicles on the road, causing nuisance to others.
• Using a cell-phone while riding a bicycle
If you have to use your cell-phone, get off your bicycle and stop in a safe place that does
not cause an obstacle to pedestrians.

Vivere a Pompei
Pompeii Exhibition – Miracle of ancient Roman culture, World Heritage
In 79 AD, Mt. Vesuvius in southern Italy erupted and buried the city of Pompei and the
days of Roman life was frozen in time by volcanic ash. Many articles unearthed from
Pompeii are preserved at the Naples National Archaeological Museum. At the exhibition
“Vivere a Pompei,” 255 items with a focus on their collections will be exhibited. Not only
vivid color fresco paintings for house decoration, but also 60 items of silverware which
are the first for the exhibition outside Italy and a bathtub and hot-water supply system
which are the first exhibition in Japan provide the image of lives of the ancient Romans.

This spring, head to Honmoku-dori, which is home to rows of large-scale commercial and residential buildings,
and if you walk one street inward from the main thoroughfare you will enter Honmoku Sakura-michi, a street
lined on both sides with glorious cherry blossoms. As you walk along this cherry blossom-lined route you will
notice an old, historical Japanese-style gate, beyond which lies a large pond, beautiful greenery and superb
historical buildings. This is Sankeien Garden, one of Yokohama’s foremost tourist destinations. The garden is
at its very best in the spring, when it is cloaked in a profusion of cherry blossoms and new spring greenery.
About Sankeien Garden
Sankeien Garden was opened in 1906 by Sankei Hara, a wealthy businessman who had made his fortune in the silk trade.
The gardens, which cover 175,000m2, are home to a number of buildings of great historical importance, which Hara brought
from cities such as Kyoto and Kamakura and preserved with skill and sensitivity to their surroundings (Currently there are
10 buildings designated as important cultural properties and three buildings that have been designated as tangible cultural
properties by Yokohama City).
The expansive land on which the garden is located is in Honmoku in the southeast of
Yokohama, overlooking Tokyo Bay. Hara began work on constructing the garden in
1902, completing the outer garden in 1908 and the inner garden in 1923. Hara was a
great patron of the arts during his lifetime and supported and cultivated a number of
innovative artists, who created a number of works in the garden that are considered
representative of modern Japan. The garden subsequently suffered extensive damage
during the war, and in 1953 the Hara family donated the property to the City of
Yokohama. The Sankeien Hoshokai Foundation was then established and set about
restoration work. The garden remains in the care of the foundation today.

• Riding with an umbrella
Riding on a bicycle with an umbrella may obstruct your view of vehicles and
pedestrians. It may also cause you to ride erratically, creating a nuisance to others.
Five Rules for Safe Cycling (How to ride your bicycle)
• In principle, bicycles should be used on roads
(sidewalks are to be used only under exceptional circumstances)
It is acceptable to cycle on the sidewalk in the following three cases: (1) Within an area
with road signs indicating that use of sidewalks is permissible, (2) Persons under 13
years old or over 70 years old, or persons with a disability, and (3) If it is considered
unavoidable to ride on the sidewalk due to road or traffic conditions.
• On roads, cyclists should keep to the left side
Cyclists should keep to the left side of the road and be careful of vehicles passing on the
right side.
• On sidewalks cyclists should yield to pedestrians and ride slowly on the side nearest the road
In cases where it is permissible to use the sidewalk, cyclists should ride at a pace that
enables them to stop immediately. Cyclists must stop and wait if their riding would cause
an obstruction to a pedestrian.
• Follow traffic safety rules
In addition to avoiding the dangerous activities listed above, drunken cycling is
prohibited and cyclists should also stop and check for safety at intersections.
• Children on bicycles should wear helmets
Parents or guardians of children and infants (under 13 years of age) should ensure that
their children wear helmets when cycling.

Inner Garden Area
The outer garden has been open to the public since it was first opened in 1906. It was planted with a variety
of flowering plants and shrubs to provide color in all of the four seasons. In spring the cherry blossoms
bloom, which are replaced in early summer by irises, and at the end of the winter to early spring visitors
can enjoy the plum blossoms. The landmark of the Outer Garden is the
three-storied pagoda of Old Tomyoji Temple from Kyoto, and visitors can also
see the following structures: Kakushokaku, the former residence of the Hara
family; the Old Tokeiji Sanctum from Tokeiji Temple in Kamakura, which was
also known as “Enkiri-dera” (because in days gone by women whose families
did not permit them to get a divorce could obtain one simply by running into the
temple sanctuary); and the Old Yanohara House, one of the largest
Gasshozukuri houses (house with a steep raftered thatched roof) in Japan.
• Three-storied Pagoda of Old Tomyoji
This three-storied pagoda is the symbol of Sankeien Garden and can be seen
from almost every point in the garden. It was moved to the garden and
preserved in 1914.
• Kakushokaku
This was the former residence of the Hara family, built in 1902
with a total area of 950m2. It was named Kakushokaku as its
exterior gives the impression of a crane opening its wings in
flight (the Japanese character used for “Kaku” of Kakushokaku
is that for crane). The house has a large Japanese-style reception
room and expansive front garden, and is used as a rental facility
for a wide variety of purposes, including traditional Japanese
activities like the tea ceremony or haiku poetry gatherings, as
well as wedding receptions and live performances.
• Gasshozukuri (Old Yanohara House)
The large, deeply slanted thatched roof is characteristic of the
impressive Gasshozukuri style used in folk houses. This house
was transferred in 1960 from the village of Shirakawa-go in Gifu
Prefecture, which has been inscribed on the UNESCO World
Heritage List. The interior of the house includes exhibitions of
folk tools and implements from the Hida region of Japan, and a
wood fire is made daily in the open hearth.
The Inner Garden was formerly the private garden of the Hara family and was opened
to the public in 1958. Here, visitors can enjoy the elegantly composed garden,
featuring traditional and ancient architecture. The garden itself has a pond and a
waterfall artfully incorporated in the design, and the buildings include a number of
important cultural properties, such as the Rinshunkaku, which was once the villa of
the Kishu Tokugawa family, the Choshukaku, which once stood in the grounds of
Nijojo Castle in Kyoto, and the Shunsoro, a tea house from the early Edo Period.
Sankeien Garden Diary
Sankeien Garden is visited by many foreigners,
given its famous status as a traditional Japanese
garden filled with historic buildings and
artworks as well as beautiful flowers and natural
scenery that change with the seasons. Although
it is enough to simply visit, take in and
appreciate the old buildings and wonders of
nature, English explanations are provided at
each spot in the garden to make visits even more Paul, center, tries making matcha for the first time
enjoyable for foreign visitors. For this special
feature, we accompanied Paul Hoffmann, a university student from the United States
interning at the City of Yokohama, and he told
us his thoughts and impressions of Sankeien
Garden:
“During my tour I found Sankeien Garden to be
extremely beautiful. It is great that Yokohama
has such a peaceful place with so much history
in the midst of an urban center. The tea
ceremonies are a great experience for foreigners,
and there are buildings and artifacts that
represent many different places in Japan. It is a

great educational, cultural and natural place.”
• Rinshunkaku
This building was once the summer villa of
Tokugawa Yorinobu, the founder of the Kishu
Tokugawa family (and son of Tokugawa
Ieyasu, the first generalissimo of the Edo
Period), and was originally built in Iwade City
in Wakayama Prefecture. In 1906 it was
t r a n s f e r r e d t o S a n ke i H a r a , w h o h a d i t
preserved in Sankeien Garden in 1917. It
comprises the first pavilion (a waiting room for
guests and vassals), the second pavilion (a reception room) and the third pavilion (a
living room). The sliding screen doors are adorned with paintings created by famous
artists representative of the Edo Period.
• Experience the tea ceremony (The Sankei Memorial)
The Sankei Memorial is situated in the Inner Garden, and in addition to introducing
through exhibitions and images of the accomplishments of Sankei Hara and works of
art associated with him, it is also a location where visitors can experience an
authentic tea ceremony with matcha (green tea) being prepared by a tea ceremony
specialist. There might be an opportunity to try preparing the green tea except busy
times if visitors wish to do so. Visitors can enjoy the unique atmosphere of the tea
ceremony, savoring the refreshing flavor and subtle sweetness of the traditional
Japanese sweets accompanying the tea, and seeing for themselves the beauty of the
green tea bowl and meticulous preparation methods.

Sankeien Garden
• Primula exhibition
Apr. 15 (Thu.) to Apr. 21 (Wed.)
Primulas are a traditional horticultural plant, like irises and morning glories, and have been cultivated
since the Edo Period. Approximately 150 of the lovely red and pure white flowers grown in small plant
pots will be on exhibition.
• Traditional buildings open to the public in the season of new greenery
(Important Cultural Properties Rinshunkaku and Choshukaku)
Apr. 29 (Thu., national holiday) to May 5 (Wed., national holiday)
Rinshunkaku and Choshukaku, two of the historical buildings that are representative of Sankeien
Garden will be open to the public. The pathway next to Choshukaku will also be open. Enjoy a
refreshing stroll surrounded by the new greenery of the spring season.
• Azalea bonsai exhibition
May 23 (Sun.) to Jun. 6 (Sun.)
Approximately 100 potted azalea bonsai several decades old will be on exhibition. On the first day, a
technical arrangement contest will be held by members of the Azalea Society, and consultations on
horticulture will be available at any time.

Major Projects of Naka Ward for FY 2010
We will plan to continue developing Naka Ward with the emphasis on the following
three points this year. Some of the major projects for each point are introduced below:
1: Safety Town
We will work on strengthening crime/disaster prevention while working together with
regional communities.
To Emphasize the Downtown Area
Crime prevention activities will be conducted for the major downtown areas including
Hatsuko/Hinode-cho and Kannai/Kangai for residents of or visitors to Yokohama to
feel safe and secure.
To Improve Regional Disaster Prevention Activities
Countermeasures against disasters, disaster prevention drills and awareness activities
will be implemented in cooperation with community residents.
• Activities to support people who need protection in a disaster (safety confirmation,
support for foreign residents’ evacuation, preparedness for securing local disaster
preparedness centers and supplies at special evacuation areas)
• Awareness activities for promotion (awareness activities using Naka Ward Disaster
Prevention Map or pamphlets for foreign residents)
2: Secure Living
We will work on creating safe and secure living environments for every citizen in
cooperation with regional communities, families, schools, businesses, etc.

To support foreign residents accounting for 10% of the population of Naka Ward, we will

BCG DTaP (Diphteria, Tetanus, Pertussis), DT (Diphteria, Tetanus), and the measles and rubella vaccination are provided at medical institutions in the city. For children aged 1, the measles and rubella vaccination should be administered before any other vaccinations are received.
Other vaccinations should be avoided for 6 days after DtaP, JE, influenza and Hepatitis B virus vaccinations are received. Other vaccinations should be avoided for 27 days after the BCG, Polio, and measles

facilities, businesses to take appropriate measures according to each situation using
leaflets or workshops.

We will work on the vitalization of towns utilizing local resources and citizens’ power
aiming to make Naka Ward more livable.
Naka Ward’s Support Project for APEC Yokohama
We will promote APEC Yokohama with existing projects and the APEC
Commemorating Projects to attract more people.
Naka International Lounge Management Project
Naka International Lounge which was opened in 2008 will work with Naka Ward as
the hub of the project. The project will encourage foreign residents to participate in
local community activities and create multi-cultural communities.

Number tags are passed out from 12:30 p.m. to facilitate smooth and orderly procedures. Measurements, clinical examinations, dental examinations (18 months, 36 months) and a lecture on nutrition
and dental care are provided. Please bring your Mother and Child Health Handbook (Boshi Kenko
Techo) and writing materials. Children older than 4 months must bring the toothbrush they are
currently using. A urine analysis is conducted for 3 year olds. Questionnaires regarding check-ups in
English, Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Portuguese and Vietnamese are available.
If circumstances prevent you from showing up on the day listed for your neighborhood, you can show up

Kanagawa Prefectural Government Ordinance on
Prevention of Exposure to Secondhand Smoke in Public Facilities
Kanagawa Prefectural Government established a new ordinance for controlling smoking in
the public space to prevent harmful health effects caused by secondhand smoke, and it has
become effective on April 1.
Principal Contents
• Class 1 Facilities, such as schools or hospitals, are required “No Smoking” in the facility.
• Class 2 Facilities, such as restaurants or hotels, are required to select “No Smoking” or
“Partial Restriction of Smoking.” (Small-scaled restaurants, pachinko parlors, etc. have
duty to endeavor to take the subscribed measures.)
• Smoking sections can be set up in all types of facilities.
• Minors under 20 years old are prohibited to enter the smoking sections or areas.
• The facilities are required to display signs, such as “No Smoking” and “Partial
Restriction of Smoking” at the entrance.
• This ordinance targets public facilities which have public space
accessible to unspecified people or multitude of people. The
outdoors, dwelling houses and offices, of which access is limited
to the specific persons, are excluded from the regulation of the ordinance.
Penalties
As penalties, the fines are imposed on persons who have smoked in the non-smoking
sections or areas, and on facility managers who have not fulfilled their duties prescribed by
the ordinance. The punitive clause for the Class 2 Facilities will be put into effect on April
1, 2011.

Major Projects of Naka Ward for FY 2010
We will plan to continue developing Naka Ward with the emphasis on the following
three points this year. Some of the major projects for each point are introduced below:
1: Safety Town
We will work on strengthening crime/disaster prevention while working together with
regional communities.
To Emphasize the Downtown Area
Crime prevention activities will be conducted for the major downtown areas including
Hatsuko/Hinode-cho and Kannai/Kangai for residents of or visitors to Yokohama to
feel safe and secure.
To Improve Regional Disaster Prevention Activities
Countermeasures against disasters, disaster prevention drills and awareness activities
will be implemented in cooperation with community residents.
• Activities to support people who need protection in a disaster (safety confirmation,
support for foreign residents’ evacuation, preparedness for securing local disaster
preparedness centers and supplies at special evacuation areas)
• Awareness activities for promotion (awareness activities using Naka Ward Disaster
Prevention Map or pamphlets for foreign residents)
2: Secure Living
We will work on creating safe and secure living environments for every citizen in
cooperation with regional communities, families, schools, businesses, etc.

To support foreign residents accounting for 10% of the population of Naka Ward, we will

Kanagawa Prefectural Government Ordinance on
Prevention of Exposure to Secondhand Smoke in Public Facilities
Kanagawa Prefectural Government established a new ordinance for controlling smoking in
the public space to prevent harmful health effects caused by secondhand smoke, and it has
become effective on April 1.
Principal Contents
• Class 1 Facilities, such as schools or hospitals, are required “No Smoking” in the facility.
• Class 2 Facilities, such as restaurants or hotels, are required to select “No Smoking” or
“Partial Restriction of Smoking.” (Small-scaled restaurants, pachinko parlors, etc. have
duty to endeavor to take the subscribed measures.)
• Smoking sections can be set up in all types of facilities.
• Minors under 20 years old are prohibited to enter the smoking sections or areas.
• The facilities are required to display signs, such as “No Smoking” and “Partial
Restriction of Smoking” at the entrance.
• This ordinance targets public facilities which have public space
accessible to unspecified people or multitude of people. The
outdoors, dwelling houses and offices, of which access is limited
to the specific persons, are excluded from the regulation of the ordinance.
Penalties
As penalties, the fines are imposed on persons who have smoked in the non-smoking
sections or areas, and on facility managers who have not fulfilled their duties prescribed by
the ordinance. The punitive clause for the Class 2 Facilities will be put into effect on April
1, 2011.

A bicycle is a convenient mode of transportation that is also environmentally friendly.
However, if you ride your bicycle incorrectly or ignore cycling rules and manners it could
lead to serious traffic accidents. Please get to know the bicycling rules of the road and use
your bicycle safely.
Dangerous Activities on a Bicycle
• Riding at high speed on the sidewalk
Sidewalks are, in principle, for the use of pedestrians. Riding at high speed on the
sidewalk frightens pedestrians and can lead to serious accidents.
• Two persons on one bicycle
Riding with two persons on one bicycle means that it is harder to maintain balance and
the danger of falling off and injuring yourself and others increases, especially if you have
to swerve to avoid danger.
• Riding at night without a light
If you ride at night without a light, you could collide with a person or vehicle and cause
a serious accident.
• Riding two abreast with another bicycle
Riding two abreast with another bicycle creates an obstacle for pedestrians on the
sidewalk and for vehicles on the road, causing nuisance to others.
• Using a cell-phone while riding a bicycle
If you have to use your cell-phone, get off your bicycle and stop in a safe place that does
not cause an obstacle to pedestrians.

Vivere a Pompei
Pompeii Exhibition – Miracle of ancient Roman culture, World Heritage
In 79 AD, Mt. Vesuvius in southern Italy erupted and buried the city of Pompei and the
days of Roman life was frozen in time by volcanic ash. Many articles unearthed from
Pompeii are preserved at the Naples National Archaeological Museum. At the exhibition
“Vivere a Pompei,” 255 items with a focus on their collections will be exhibited. Not only
vivid color fresco paintings for house decoration, but also 60 items of silverware which
are the first for the exhibition outside Italy and a bathtub and hot-water supply system
which are the first exhibition in Japan provide the image of lives of the ancient Romans.

This spring, head to Honmoku-dori, which is home to rows of large-scale commercial and residential buildings,
and if you walk one street inward from the main thoroughfare you will enter Honmoku Sakura-michi, a street
lined on both sides with glorious cherry blossoms. As you walk along this cherry blossom-lined route you will
notice an old, historical Japanese-style gate, beyond which lies a large pond, beautiful greenery and superb
historical buildings. This is Sankeien Garden, one of Yokohama’s foremost tourist destinations. The garden is
at its very best in the spring, when it is cloaked in a profusion of cherry blossoms and new spring greenery.
About Sankeien Garden
Sankeien Garden was opened in 1906 by Sankei Hara, a wealthy businessman who had made his fortune in the silk trade.
The gardens, which cover 175,000m2, are home to a number of buildings of great historical importance, which Hara brought
from cities such as Kyoto and Kamakura and preserved with skill and sensitivity to their surroundings (Currently there are
10 buildings designated as important cultural properties and three buildings that have been designated as tangible cultural
properties by Yokohama City).
The expansive land on which the garden is located is in Honmoku in the southeast of
Yokohama, overlooking Tokyo Bay. Hara began work on constructing the garden in
1902, completing the outer garden in 1908 and the inner garden in 1923. Hara was a
great patron of the arts during his lifetime and supported and cultivated a number of
innovative artists, who created a number of works in the garden that are considered
representative of modern Japan. The garden subsequently suffered extensive damage
during the war, and in 1953 the Hara family donated the property to the City of
Yokohama. The Sankeien Hoshokai Foundation was then established and set about
restoration work. The garden remains in the care of the foundation today.

• Riding with an umbrella
Riding on a bicycle with an umbrella may obstruct your view of vehicles and
pedestrians. It may also cause you to ride erratically, creating a nuisance to others.
Five Rules for Safe Cycling (How to ride your bicycle)
• In principle, bicycles should be used on roads
(sidewalks are to be used only under exceptional circumstances)
It is acceptable to cycle on the sidewalk in the following three cases: (1) Within an area
with road signs indicating that use of sidewalks is permissible, (2) Persons under 13
years old or over 70 years old, or persons with a disability, and (3) If it is considered
unavoidable to ride on the sidewalk due to road or traffic conditions.
• On roads, cyclists should keep to the left side
Cyclists should keep to the left side of the road and be careful of vehicles passing on the
right side.
• On sidewalks cyclists should yield to pedestrians and ride slowly on the side nearest the road
In cases where it is permissible to use the sidewalk, cyclists should ride at a pace that
enables them to stop immediately. Cyclists must stop and wait if their riding would cause
an obstruction to a pedestrian.
• Follow traffic safety rules
In addition to avoiding the dangerous activities listed above, drunken cycling is
prohibited and cyclists should also stop and check for safety at intersections.
• Children on bicycles should wear helmets
Parents or guardians of children and infants (under 13 years of age) should ensure that
their children wear helmets when cycling.

Inner Garden Area
The outer garden has been open to the public since it was first opened in 1906. It was planted with a variety
of flowering plants and shrubs to provide color in all of the four seasons. In spring the cherry blossoms
bloom, which are replaced in early summer by irises, and at the end of the winter to early spring visitors
can enjoy the plum blossoms. The landmark of the Outer Garden is the
three-storied pagoda of Old Tomyoji Temple from Kyoto, and visitors can also
see the following structures: Kakushokaku, the former residence of the Hara
family; the Old Tokeiji Sanctum from Tokeiji Temple in Kamakura, which was
also known as “Enkiri-dera” (because in days gone by women whose families
did not permit them to get a divorce could obtain one simply by running into the
temple sanctuary); and the Old Yanohara House, one of the largest
Gasshozukuri houses (house with a steep raftered thatched roof) in Japan.
• Three-storied Pagoda of Old Tomyoji
This three-storied pagoda is the symbol of Sankeien Garden and can be seen
from almost every point in the garden. It was moved to the garden and
preserved in 1914.
• Kakushokaku
This was the former residence of the Hara family, built in 1902
with a total area of 950m2. It was named Kakushokaku as its
exterior gives the impression of a crane opening its wings in
flight (the Japanese character used for “Kaku” of Kakushokaku
is that for crane). The house has a large Japanese-style reception
room and expansive front garden, and is used as a rental facility
for a wide variety of purposes, including traditional Japanese
activities like the tea ceremony or haiku poetry gatherings, as
well as wedding receptions and live performances.
• Gasshozukuri (Old Yanohara House)
The large, deeply slanted thatched roof is characteristic of the
impressive Gasshozukuri style used in folk houses. This house
was transferred in 1960 from the village of Shirakawa-go in Gifu
Prefecture, which has been inscribed on the UNESCO World
Heritage List. The interior of the house includes exhibitions of
folk tools and implements from the Hida region of Japan, and a
wood fire is made daily in the open hearth.
The Inner Garden was formerly the private garden of the Hara family and was opened
to the public in 1958. Here, visitors can enjoy the elegantly composed garden,
featuring traditional and ancient architecture. The garden itself has a pond and a
waterfall artfully incorporated in the design, and the buildings include a number of
important cultural properties, such as the Rinshunkaku, which was once the villa of
the Kishu Tokugawa family, the Choshukaku, which once stood in the grounds of
Nijojo Castle in Kyoto, and the Shunsoro, a tea house from the early Edo Period.
Sankeien Garden Diary
Sankeien Garden is visited by many foreigners,
given its famous status as a traditional Japanese
garden filled with historic buildings and
artworks as well as beautiful flowers and natural
scenery that change with the seasons. Although
it is enough to simply visit, take in and
appreciate the old buildings and wonders of
nature, English explanations are provided at
each spot in the garden to make visits even more Paul, center, tries making matcha for the first time

feature, we accompanied Paul Hoffmann, a university student from the United States
interning at the City of Yokohama, and he told
us his thoughts and impressions of Sankeien
Garden:
“During my tour I found Sankeien Garden to be
extremely beautiful. It is great that Yokohama
has such a peaceful place with so much history
in the midst of an urban center. The tea
ceremonies are a great experience for foreigners,
and there are buildings and artifacts that
represent many different places in Japan. It is a

great educational, cultural and natural place.”
• Rinshunkaku
This building was once the summer villa of
Tokugawa Yorinobu, the founder of the Kishu
Tokugawa family (and son of Tokugawa
Ieyasu, the first generalissimo of the Edo
Period), and was originally built in Iwade City
in Wakayama Prefecture. In 1906 it was
t r a n s f e r r e d t o S a n ke i H a r a , w h o h a d i t
preserved in Sankeien Garden in 1917. It
comprises the first pavilion (a waiting room for
guests and vassals), the second pavilion (a reception room) and the third pavilion (a
living room). The sliding screen doors are adorned with paintings created by famous
artists representative of the Edo Period.
• Experience the tea ceremony (The Sankei Memorial)
The Sankei Memorial is situated in the Inner Garden, and in addition to introducing
through exhibitions and images of the accomplishments of Sankei Hara and works of
art associated with him, it is also a location where visitors can experience an
authentic tea ceremony with matcha (green tea) being prepared by a tea ceremony
specialist. There might be an opportunity to try preparing the green tea except busy
times if visitors wish to do so. Visitors can enjoy the unique atmosphere of the tea
ceremony, savoring the refreshing flavor and subtle sweetness of the traditional
Japanese sweets accompanying the tea, and seeing for themselves the beauty of the
green tea bowl and meticulous preparation methods.

Primulas are a traditional horticultural plant, like irises and morning glories, and have been cultivated
since the Edo Period. Approximately 150 of the lovely red and pure white flowers grown in small plant
pots will be on exhibition.
• Traditional buildings open to the public in the season of new greenery
(Important Cultural Properties Rinshunkaku and Choshukaku)
Apr. 29 (Thu., national holiday) to May 5 (Wed., national holiday)
Rinshunkaku and Choshukaku, two of the historical buildings that are representative of Sankeien
Garden will be open to the public. The pathway next to Choshukaku will also be open. Enjoy a
refreshing stroll surrounded by the new greenery of the spring season.
• Azalea bonsai exhibition
May 23 (Sun.) to Jun. 6 (Sun.)
Approximately 100 potted azalea bonsai several decades old will be on exhibition. On the first day, a
technical arrangement contest will be held by members of the Azalea Society, and consultations on
horticulture will be available at any time.
