President’s Message
Cecilia Christersson
ADEE President
While you maybe already have
started your vacation or are in the
midst of preparation to begin your
summer break it is also with great
anticipation that we now look forward to this year’s annual scientific
meeting and the General Assembly
of the ADEE. Hopefully many of
you have already registered and
made travel arrangements to meet
up in Birmingham between the
28th and the 31st of August. The
date is basically just around the
corner and it would be great to see
the whole ADEE family there!
Come and join!
The meeting theme - Electronic learning @ ADEE - is without
doubt a front line issue for all education in a digitised world
where internet and IT have made the world more transparent,
accessible and conveniently interconnected. The Local
Organising Committee with our own Secretary General
Professor Damien Walmsley as the Chairman has done a
fantastic job, putting an impressive programme together with
a focus on how to expand and elaborate on both learning and
teaching with the support of a wide variety of information
technology tools. Not only is there a wish among very many
educators to become more efficient in the application and
ongoing use of different techniques but also there is a clear
desire to have an arena where we can discuss this key topic.
Educators want to share their thoughts and highlight their
important concerns and values regarding the ways in which we
promote and further develop open collaborative learning
processes with special benefit to life long learning and
improvement of oral health. So take this opportunity to be
part of how we can develop digital learning environments
where we creatively learn together while becoming more
prepared to embrace and handle change.

Learning together to improve oral health and quality of life
Professor Cecilia Christersson
In June we gathered in Hungary for the 2nd European
Workshop in Implant Dentistry University Education. As you
will see in the beautiful image below captured by our
Secretary General and talented photographer Damien
Walmsley, the city of Budapest and its inhabitants were
within centimetres of devastation due to the flooding
experienced across Europe! Fortunately, the historic city was
spared, travel was not a problem for the delegates and the staff
at the Courtyard city centre conference suite facilitated the
smooth running of the meeting in every way. More than forty
academics from all over Europe came together with our
partners from industry to discuss strategies for the
implementation and integration of implant dentistry both in
the University curricula and in Continuous Professional
Development structures. I would like to congratulate all those
who gathered between 13-15th of June to dedicate themselves
to making this consensus workshop in implant dentistry a
success. The workshop outcomes will be presented through
three position papers and a consensus document which will be
published in a special issue of the European Journal of Dental
Education; planning of this publication is currently underway.
Cyclists keep their feet above water as they admire Buda Castle
across the swollen river Danube
I wish to particularly acknowledge Nikos Mattheos, who
together with Mariano Sanz, Klaus Lang and Björn Klinge
undertook the organisation of the workshop. I also thank our
colleagues from many countries across Europe and further
afield who generously created a space in their busy academic,
clinical and personal lives to give their time, wisdom and
expertise to preparing for and attending this important
workshop. The 2nd Implant Workshop was made possible
through the generous support of our valuable industry

Secretary General’s Report
Damien Walmsley
I hope you are all having a fantastic summer and are taking the opportunity for a well deserved
holiday. Life in both undergraduate and postgraduate education is as busy then ever before and this is
reflected in the activity of ADEE over the last few months.
In June the ADEE 2nd European Workshop in Implant Dentistry University Education took place in
the beautiful city of Budapest. The event was
organised by Nikos Mattheos and over 40
dental teachers involved in implant education
gathered to discuss Implant Dentistry. Its
implementation was discussed both at
undergraduate and postgraduate level.
Guidelines for life long learning were also
discussed. The proceedings of the workshop
will be published as a special supplement of
Damien Walmsley

the near future. A report on the workshop is
on Page 3 of this Newsletter. I would like to
thank our sponsors Dentsply Implants, Geistlich, Southern Implants,
MIS and Strauman. Well done to Nikos and Majella for all their
organisation of the conference.
At the end of August the 39th ADEE Annual Scientific meeting
Electronic Learning @ ADEE will take place in Birmingham and I am
looking forward to welcoming you to my home city. The programme
will be very interesting and can be viewed at www.birmingham.ac.uk/
ADEE2013 Many of you will be preparing talks or posters in
anticipation of the meeting and I know that this will be a busy period for
you. We have a few surprises for delegates during the conference and
we will ensure that there will be ample opportunity to sample the
attractions that the city of Birmingham has to offer.
The Association has been busy in many other areas including the
modernisation of the Professional Qualification Directive, the Better
Oral Health in Europe Platform. These will be discussed and elaborated
on during our Annual Conference.
I now look forward to your arrival in Birmingham, and having time to
say hello to everyone and sharing a few words. Until then…… .

their commitment and partnership in this venture.
Our busy Editor in chief, Professor Michael Manogue, was
one of the prestigious invited speakers at the 2013 Biennial
Conference on Problem-based Learning in Dentistry which
was hosted by the Faculty of Odontology, Malmö University.
This meeting was a truly international gathering with key
speakers from Europe, Canada and Australia and participants
from all continents engaged in lively discussion and sharing of
experiences. For more information and access to speakers

Following discussions during our winter meeting on the
importance of recognising the potential within our
membership and the nurturing of the future leadership in
European dental education, the Executive Committee has

more affectionately known as ‘Old Joe’
during the spring strategically set about developing a structure
to support valuable initiatives coming from our young
educators’. It is also our intention to facilitate a link between
our Dean’s meeting and our Young Educators for a dialogue
forum. We plan to bring this concept to fruition during the
Birmingham meeting.
Amongst the topics at the 2013 General Assembly we will
have an updated report on the EU agenda and specifically on
the current status of the Professional Qualifications Directive
which as you know has been under review. We will see the
importance of ADEE’s involvement with the European agenda
and other dental organisations involved in European dental
affairs.
We all now look forward to seeing you at the Annual
Scientific Meeting and General Assembly in August welcome to Birmingham!

Replacement of missing teeth with dental implants is one of the
most rapidly increasing treatment modalities for edentulism.
The advancement in our understanding of tissue healing, as well
as continuous improvement in technology, has extended the
indication for dental implants to a wide portion of the
population, offering long-term successful and highly predictable
treatment outcomes. At present, however, Implant Dentistry
stands at a crossroads. Despite the achievements of the last
decades, the increasing application combined with economic
pressure from market factors has resulted in a significant
increase in the number and complexity of complications we
encounter in dental practice. Any compromise in the skills of
the operator, the patient selection, the techniques, devices or
components utilised can lead to severe problems, which
especially when blown out of proportion by public media, can
jeopardise the achievements of decades and can have a negative
impact not only on Implant Dentistry as a popular treatment
modality, but also on the profession and finally the quality of
care offered to the patients.
In such a challenging and rapidly evolving clinical environment,
the development of a comprehensive educational framework for
every stage of education is the first necessary step, in order to ensure the level of quality we want to see in the training of
clinicians and the patient care. This comprehensive educational framework was the main focus of the 2nd European Consensus
Workshop in Implant Dentistry Education, which took place with great success in Budapest in June 2013. The event under the
auspices of the ADEE hosted more than forty leading academics from all over Europe, who discussed education frameworks in
Implant Dentistry for undergraduate and post-graduate level as well as Continuous Professional Development.
Five years ago in Prague, the 1st consensus workshop went a long way towards describing the learning objectives and
competencies which should be targeted in university curricula. As such, the 1st workshop has been extremely successful in
establishing a "baseline" and setting the goals to which future educational efforts should aspire.
This second workshop in Budapest served a more strategic purpose, as it focused this time, not on the description of
competencies but rather in investigating and describing strategies for the implementation and integration of implant dentistry in
both the University curricular and Continuous Professional Development structures. In addition, it became a major platform for
an urgently needed discussion with regard to the role of the university in the currently vague environment of post-graduation
education in Implant Dentistry.
The workshop outcomes are presented in the three position papers, which together with the main consensus document and other
original research will be published in a special issue of the European Journal of Dental Education. The event was made possible
through the generous support of our industry partners, Dentsply Implants, Geistlich, MIS, Southern Implants and Straumann.

3rd Virtual World Congress of Dental Students
Antun Sablek
The Virtual World Congress of Dental Students is an
innovative project by a national dental student's association in
Croatia – Udruga Studenata Dentalne Medicine (USDM).
The idea behind this project is to give every dental student
(even students who perhaps would not be able to attend
traditional meetings due to distance and cost) a chance to
present a scientific paper to colleagues and teachers and be
awarded. The aim of the initiative is to encourage students to
take part in research activities or conduct their own research
projects, to increase communication and collaboration
between dental schools.
The 3rd Virtual World Congress of Dental Students was held
from 13 - 15th May 2013 via the webinar system of the
University Computing Centre - SRCE. Members of USDM
Antun Sablek, Maja Miladinovic, Emina Kabil, Irena
Mijatovic, Luka Banjšak, Ivan Šeparovic, Andrija Ban and
Darija Šiljeg formed the organising committee of the
3rd Virtual World Congress of Dental Students. The congress
was supported by the University of Zagreb School of Dental
Medicine, Zagreb Tourist Board and Ivoclar Vivadent.
The main topic of the Congress was digital dental design. The
Congress programme included Keynote lectures and eOral
presentations. On the first day of congress lectures were
delivered by Professor Patricia Reynolds (King's College
London) ‘Back to Future: Perspectives and predictions for
your education’ and Professor Vlatko Panduric (School of
Dental Medicine, University of Zagreb) ‘Daily practice and
aesthetic restorations’. Dr Mauricio Gonzalez Balut,
(Mexico city) gave a lecture on the topic ‘Definite orthodontic
treatment for patients with TMD’. Dr. Howard Farran,
(Arizona), who is a noted international lecturer, informed
participants on ‘Faster, easier and more efficient dentistry’.
On the last day of the Congress Associate Professor Jale
Tanalp, Faculty of Dentistry, Yeditepe University, Istanbul
contributed to the conference with a lecture ‘Auto CAD system
in the evaluation of endodontic treatment’. Professor
Sukhdep Singh, Sharda University, India who specialises in
Paedodontics & Preventive Dentistry closed the 3rd session of
the Congress with the topic ‘Evidence in paediatric dentistry’.
Representatives from dental student organisations EDSA,
IDJSR and DSWAI also contributed to the congress with their
presentations. In addition to the dental professionals scientific
papers were presented by participating students and the best of
these received awardes.
The international scientific jury comprised of Professor

Congress of Dental students held in May 2013
Vjekoslav Jerolimov (University of Zagreb, Croatia) and
Professosr Meric Karapinar Kazandag (Yeditepe University, Istanbul, Turkey). The awards were as follows;
1st Prize (€300): Nurretin Diker (Istanbul, Turkey). His
topic was ‘Pathophysiological processes of axons and trigeminal
ganglions in a time dependent manner induced by inferior alveolarnerve axotomy’.
2nd Prize (€200 Euros) was won by Amaya Gomez Olga del
Pilar (Bogota, Colombia) ‘Dental stem cells mobilization as
strategy for craniofacial regeneration in vivo’.
3rd Prize (€100) was awarded to Ayesha Zaka (Islamabad,
Pakistan) ‘Prevalence of smoking and smokeless tobacco
among different socioeconomic groups of Islamabad’.
In the Postgraduate category Rushil R. Dang (India) received
an award of €100 for his scientific paper presentation ‘CAD
CAM dentistry – Fast track to beautiful smile’.
USDM will continue with the organisation of Virtual World
Congress of Dental Students, hoping that this event will
become a well established tradition in the dental calendar and
attract more students and doctors of dental medicine
worldwide. All information about the congress can be found
on our official web-page www.virtualdentalcongress.com
We invite all dental students to join us in the virtual room next
year, not only as passive participants, but also to present their
scientific papers, win prizes and make new friends.

FEHDD - Federation of European Heads and Deans of Dental Schools
Nairn Wilson
In the 1960’s a small number of European Dental Deans met on a regular basis to share experiences and concerns. The
arrangement lead to the establishment of ADEE in 1975. In the mid-1990’s, a growing body of opinion within ADEE indicated
that there would be benefits in establishing a forum for Deans based on arrangements in place for ADEE Special Interest Groups
(SIG’s). Following a decision to proceed with a Deans and Heads of schools SIG ADEE President-elect Malcolm Jones, then
Dean in Cardiff convened the inaugural meeting of the new SIG on behalf of ADEE in Dublin at the 2007 meeting. Proposed
terms of reference were accepted by 20-30 Deans and Heads of dental schools present. Professors Mariano Sanz and Nairn
Wilson were elected to serve as co-chairs of the SIG.
On foot of wide consultation amongst dental school leaders in Europe a clear consensus emerged - develop the SIG into an
informal forum in which Deans and Heads of the dental schools could meet during the ADEE annual meeting to address matters
of common interest, possibly facilitated by a colleague, or other person. Sessions are open to current, past and future Heads and
Deans and associate heads of schools and to the ADEE Executive and to School Managers and senior Administrators by
invitation. Feedback continues to be most encouraging with many participants reporting that the Forum provides an excellent
opportunity for personal development, networking and collaborative planning.
Each year the Forum of European Heads and Deans of Dental Schools (FEHDD) Co-Chairs arrange for a leadership consultant
of international standing to work with the group; these have included Karl Haden, President, Academy for Academic Leadership; facilitator and business coach Alex Selwood; Jacques Martinot Krauthammer International Director and Scott Wilson,
Europe CEO, Cohn & Wolfe Communications. In 2013 the facilitator will be Alister Wilson, Director, Waverley Consultants.
Following five fruitful years with Professors Sanz and Wilson as co-Chairs the FEHDD Chairmanship has passed to
Professors June Nunn (Dublin) and Katalin Nagy (Szeged). ADEE wishes both of them and FEHDD continued success.
ADEE gratefully acknowledges the generous support afforded to the FEHDD by Colgate.

Honorary Life Membership of ADEE - Professor John Scott
Since the foundation of ADEE in 1975 the Association has grown into a robust continental organisation that seeks to address the
ever changing needs of our dynamic profession. The continued evolution and strategic development that we sometimes take for
granted is due in no small measure to the commitment and loyalty of our membership and also to many key people who have
been an integral part of ADEE over the years.
Professor John Scott is a person who gave unstintingly of his time, and wisdom to our Association over many years. He
served on the Executive Committee and as ADEE President but beyond that he worked tirelessly as Editor in Chief of the
European Journal of Dental Education for twelve years. John has graciously agreed to accept Honorary Life Membership of
ADEE which will be conferred on him by the President Cecilia Christersson during the 2013 General Assembly of ADEE,
recognising his important contribution to the Association.
We look forward to expressing our appreciation to John and to celebrating this event with him and his wife Mary.
