Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction Poetic Landscape 1998 Bad Salzuflen, Germany Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction A different way of looking, perceiving and understanding landscape that uses sensibility and intuition as modes of perception in order to extract from the landscape its traces of expression, its lines of force, the sensations it composes, its materials and their inner composition . But also, and most importantly, presents a transformation - it’s not a natural landscape - that converts all these forces, lines and materials into matters of expression of a work of architecture and only through the architect / artist composition. Many of these images are connected with my training and work as an architect. Some of the other images have to do with my childhood. There was a time when I experienced architecture without thinking about it. →the deepest architectural experience (a particular door handle) Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction It is important to me to reflect about architecture, to step back from my daily work and take a look at what I am doing and why I am doing it. design a building → old, half-forgotton memories → recollect → revive Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction -materials Materials in architecture can be made to shine and vibrate. -light the light of the moon, the light of the sun, the light in the landscape, shadow and the darkness -details Details are not mere decoration. They do not distract or entertain. They lead to understanding of the whole of which they are an inherent part. -space Space is a tiny part of the infinity that surrounds the earth, and yet each and every building marks a unique place in that infinity. Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction -life There is a power in the ordinary things of everyday life. Every building is built for a specific use in a specific place and for a specific society. If its body is sensitive enough, it can assume a quality that bears witness to the reality of past life. -desire "I want to build this house!" The design process is based on a constant interplay of feeling and reason. Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction Does Beauty Have a Form? Paintings by Rothko “To me, it’s only a question of seeing, a purely visual experience.” “Concentration on the pictures sets you free.” Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction The Renaissance theater in Vicenza “As if it belonged to the landscape and the landscape belonged to it.” Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction The Light in the Landscape “I have always wanted to write a book about light. I can think of nothing that reminds me of eternity.” “Which light do we want to switch on between sunset and sunrise?” Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction The Magic of the Real The magic of the real: that to me is the “alchemy.” Real substances→Human sensations “Can I create that unique feeling of intensity and mood, of presence, well-being, nightness and beauty?” Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction “Apricot trees exists, apricot trees exist/ Ferns exist; and blackberries…” “Everything is as it should be ; everything is in its place. What I see is the thing itself. It captivates me.” Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction BRUDER KLAUS Saint Nicholas of Flüe (1417-1487) Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction Earlier life • • • • illiterate the oldest son of wealthy peasants At the age of 21 he entered the army At around the age of 30, he married Dorothy Wiss, a farmer's daughter • After serving in the military, he became a councillor and judge for his canton for nine years Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction Political mystic • set himself up as a hermit • survived for nineteen years with no food except for the eucharist • counsel to the Diet of Stans(1481) helped to prevent war between the Swiss cantons • became a spiritual guide • be honored among both Protestants and Catholics meditation picture Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction My Lord and my God, take from me everything that distances me from you. Tower The Bruder Klaus Field Chapel began as a sketch that eventually evolved into a stylish point of reference while essential in the natural landscape of Germany. “ To me, buildings can have a beautiful silence that I associate with attributes such as composure, self- evidence, durability, presence and integrity, and with warmth and sensuality, a building that is being itself, being a building, that does not represent anything…” Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction Section Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction CONSTRUCTION Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction • e Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction Clear elemental : light, shade, water, fire, material → Transcendence Architecture and building are sacrificial → Substance and Labor and Time Help of friends + carpenter 24 work days → 50cm-high layer of rammed concrete → 12m hight Peter Zumthor Thinking Architecture Bruder Klaus Site Space Concept Construction After three weeks fire smolder, there were few traces of logs original.
