Junior Alert: It’s Time to Plan for Interscholastic Star
Since the Arkansas Activities Association’s creation of the
Arkansas Interscholastic Star program in the 1992-93 school
year, Arkansas high schools have selected over close to
2,000 outstanding young people as the individual in that
year’s eleventh grade class who best exemplifies the criteria
described by the Three A’s of the Interscholastic Star program. These criteria are:
* Active involvement in school activities and community
service
* Adaptability to meet challenging situations with courage,
perseverance and commitment, and an
* Attitude of cooperation, dependability and application of
interpersonal skills.
Since the program began, 23 outstanding young people
have been named to serve as the representative for school
activities programs and the values found in them. These
students were named locally to represent various schools in
every area of the state. Past Interscholastic Star selections
and their schools are:

The schools that selected their own Interscholastic Stars
in the 2015-2016 school year are using these students in a
number of ways to highlight the student activities programs. These students continue to extol the values found
through participation in interscholastic activities such as
athletics, choir, band, speech/debate, academic honor
organizations, FBLA, FHA, spirit groups and others. They are
involved in assemblies, parades, community relations, mentoring, service projects and sportsmanship promotions – to
name just a few. These students are excellent role models
for others to emulate.
Now is the time to be planning for your school’s selection
of an Interscholastic Star, currently a junior, to function in
these capacities and more, as well as having their selection
form submitted to the AAA for consideration for statewide
honors. Selection forms will be available on the AAA’s website at www.ahsaa.org.
If your school has not selected an Interscholastic Star in the
past, this year is a good time to begin. Not only does your
Interscholastic Star serve as a very visible example of the
good things your school activities program has to offer, but
the student may become a finalist in the statewide selection and be the recipient of a scholarship for future use.
The student selected as Arkansas’ Interscholastic Star will be
given a $1,000 reward and the runner-up will receive a $500
reward. The other three finalists will receive a $300 reward.
So, get set…be ready! Your selection committee can be
formed now and begin to consider the eleventh grade
students in order to select that outstanding young man or
woman who best meets the criteria of the Three A’s and will
be named the school’s 2016-2017 Interscholastic Star.

AAA Announces Wendy’s 2015-2016 Golf Players of the Year
Casey Ott of Conway and Wil Gibson of Jonesboro have been
selected as the Wendy’s Golf High School Players of the Year,
which was announced by the Arkansas Activities Association.
Ott is the second consecutive sophomore to win the award in
the girl’s division. A year ago that honor went to Brooke Matthews of Rogers.
Ott secured this year’s title by winning the Girl’s Overall State
Golf Championship with a four-over par round of 76. She was
one stroke better than Matthews. Matthews won the Class
7A state championship, with Ott finishing second, one stroke
behind with a two-day total of 143.
12-stroke advantage.
Gibson led Jonesboro to a 45-1 overall record. His scoring
average was 72.0 per outing.
Both Ott and Gibson were All-State selections this season.
Wendy’s next Player of the Year Awards will be for tennis and
volleyball. The deadline for nomination forms for the two
sports is November 2, 2015.
Wendy’s Player of the Year
Gibson had control of the 2015 class from start to finish. He
captured the Boy’s Overall State Championship with a threeunder par 69 and a seven-stroke advantage. He won the Class
6A state championship with a two-day total of 141 and a
