One of the biggest challenges of retirement planning is balancing your lifestyle needs and desires with a new budget. There are various ways to accommodate your lifestyle without breaking the bank, but for now we will focus on these five steps to help you prepare for a reasonable retirement budget. Analyze your living expenses. Start now, before you retire, and you can ease the eventual transition into your new budget. Cut back on unnecessary expenses that you might not be able to afford during retirement, and you will be able to save more for the future. That's not to say that you have to cut out everything you enjoy; just keep in mind that gradual changes are often easier to accept than sudden ones. Reduce your debt. The best way to reduce your monthly expenses is to get out of debt before you retire. Some people even choose to keep working a year or two longer, so that they can retire without the heavy burden of debt. You will enjoy more room in your budget, and you will probably feel more confident about the future. 13 14 16 44 B.C. - Julius Caesar assassinated in the Senate chamber in Rome, "Beware the Ides of March". 2016 - Daylight Savings Time begins today! 20 15 21 22 28 18 St. Patrick's Day 23 1963 - After 29 years, Alcatraz prison is closed. 27 17 24 1989 - The oil tanker Exxon Valdez runs aground in Prince William Sound off Alaska. 29 30 31 1886 - Coca Cola is invented. 1964 - Jeopardy debuts on television. 1889 - The Eiffel Tower opens in Paris, France. 25 19 1918 - Congress approves Daylight Savings Time. Get rid of that house payment. Most people report that housing is their largest monthly expense. Are you living in a larger home than you will need in retirement? Will you be able to afford the homeowners association fees and upkeep on the house? Now that you no longer need to worry about living in the right school zone, can you move to a less expensive area? Consider all of these factors when deciding where to live in retirement, and you could reduce your housing costs significantly. 26 Consider health care expenses. Your health care plan in retirement will be different from the one you have now, and your health is likely to change as you age, as well. Since Medicare does not cover all medical care at 100 percent, you will have to cover co-pays and deductibles. If you experience the need for long term nursing care, you might be shocked at the price tag. Before you retire, make sure you're taking good care of yourself, and consider opening a health savings account if you can. This will allow you to set aside pre-tax dollars to be used for future health care expenses. You might also think about various types of insurance such as long term care insurance or Medicare supplemental plans. Prepare for emergencies. What happens if you need to replace your roof, or you need a major car repair? Pulling additional funds from your retirement savings account can trigger long-term consequences for your future budget. Set aside some cash in a savings account, so that you can deal with emergencies without disrupting your plan for the future. As you get ready to retire, call us to schedule a consultation. We can go over every item on your list, plus some that you perhaps haven't even considered, and help you put together a plan for a stable retirement.
