Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? Virginia O’Hanlon Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skep- tical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Seated, from left, Troy Reed and Jeff Hodges; standing, Amber Brown, Becky Mullins, Amanda Williams, Crystal Tucker, Malacia Carter, Susan Payne and Betty Bryant; not present, Nancy Ricketts and Candice Boldin. ARDMORE 26591 East Main Street Ardmore, TN 38449 (931) 427-2171 PULASKI 206 South First Street Pulaski, TN 38478 (931) 363-2585 www.fnbforyou.com compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to have men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood. trimmed with a wish May your holiday be as bright as a Christmas tree that’s all alight; May your joys be many and your cares be few and may your faith reside with you; And when the trimmings all come down, may good fortune hang around! The local exhibit will complement the Smithsonian traveling exhibit 28480 Lambert Road - Ardmore, Alabama 35739 You Are Invited To Worship With Us Saturday, December 24, Christmas Eve at 5:00 PM Lord’s Supper Service Sunday, December 25, Christmas Day at 10:45 AM Sunday Morning Service - Special Music and Testimonies No Sunday School or Evening Service COME JOIN US AS WE CELEBRATE THIS HOLY SEASON Merry Christmas And she shall bring forth a son, And thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Matthew 1:21 WE WILL BE OPEN Thursday, Dec. 22nd , Friday Dec. 23rd and Saturday, Dec. 24th “The Way We Worked,” on display in Elkton from January 28 through March 3, 2012. “The Way We Worked in Giles County” is currently in the planning phase. Different areas of focus will include agriculture, industry, family farms, and transportation. Local organizations and individuals are requested to contact the Elkton Historical Society immediately regarding loans of photographs, personal stories and artifacts. It is requested that all items pertain specifically to Giles County. The more information available about a specific item such as names of people in photographs, age of an item and location will help ensure possible inclusion in the companion exhibit. Photographs may be scanned and returned to the owner prior to the exhibit’s run dates. Various options for story collections are being reviewed for the most accessible option possible. Artifacts will also be on display in the companion exhibit for all visitors to enjoy. Examples of artifacts include tools used in ev- eryday historical life such as a tobacco press or cotton scale. A later example that helps to illustrate work in Giles County is a computer server from the 1970’s. When compared to existing items and methods, artifacts allow a visitor to make their own conclusions regarding progress in the workplace and changing technology. Individual stories will also help create a more vivid picture of the evolution of types of work and processes and how this has affected local culture and communities. Donna Baker, Executive Director of the Giles County Chamber of Commerce, said “It is such an honor to have a highly renowned Smithsonian national exhibit in our community. The local exhibit will be so interesting for all generations to see how work was done in the past compared to present day”. To aide in creating a full and focused local companion to the Smithsonian Museum on Main Street exhibit, Humanities Tennessee consultant Rob DeHart recently visited Elkton. The Tennessee Wildlife Federation’s Hunters for the Hungry program is inviting hunters across the state to donate harvested deer, so that food banks and soup kitchens have meat to serve hungry Tennesseans through the colder months. Between now and Jan. 1, select Hunters for the Hungry processors can accept about 650 deer for free, which would provide more than 100,000 meals. Hunters can simply drop off the deer at a participating processor, and the meat is professionally butchered and distributed to local hunger-relief organizations. A list of processors with funding is available at www.tnwf.org/huntersfor-the-hungry. Hunters in Giles County may drop deer off at AJ’s Deer Processing at 5680 Minor Hill Highway in Goodsprings, TN. Initially AJ’s could accept 50 deer with the funding already provided by Hunters for the Hungry.
