Questions & Answers Registration Information ACADEMIC APPEALS Students who have been academically dismissed must appeal to their academic dean in writing to be allowed to return to school. The appeal must include an explanation of the circumstances that led to the dismissal and a plan that includes the specific steps the student will take to return to good standing. The academic dean may deny the appeal in which case the student may appeal to the Dean of Academic Affairs. ACADEMIC DISMISSAL OR PROBATION Please see the DeVry Student Handbook for information about academic dismissals and probation. Handbooks are available in Student Services. ACCELERATED COURSE INFORMATION Accelerated classes are designated with a U, W, X, Y, or Z, and any student may take these classes as long as the class is not full. Students should register for classes to be taken in both the A and B sessions during the registration period. All Courses offered at the Chicago Metro University Centers (Gurnee, Oakbrook Terrace, Naperville, O’Hare, Loop, Schaumburg, Milwaukee, WI & Merrillville, IN locations) are accelerated. ATTENDANCE POLICY - NEW DeVry University students are expected to attend every class. Therefore, if students wish to withdraw from a class, they must initiate the course withdrawal process. This process begins by completing a “Course Withdrawal Form,” which can be obtained from the Registrar’s Office, Academics’ Office, or DeVry University Center Office. The Attendance Policy will no longer allow instructor-initiated withdrawals from any courses. If students stop attending but do not withdraw from a class, the grade earned, which may be an F, will be awarded at the end of the semester. Students will be dismissed from DeVry University if they miss more than 2 consecutive weeks of all of their classes. Additionally, students will be dismissed from Online classes on a per course basis if they miss 2 consecutive weeks of a class. FALL 2006 REGISTRATION Accelerated Class Information Accelerated Course/IOptimize Delivery To supplement the eight onsite classroom meetings offered by the accelerated method of delivery, accelerated courses are moving to an IOptimize method of delivery. IOptimize classes are accelerated courses that also provide online learning as part of the course requirements. As students enroll in an accelerated course, it is important to understand the computer requirements for the course. It is also important to understand if the accelerated course is utilizing the IOptimize method of delivery. IOptimize classes require online coursework in addition to the onsite classroom contact hours each week. Attendance onsite and participation online are tracked each week. The standard requirements for IOptimize course work are: 2 credit hour course - 2 hours* onsite and 1.5 hours online 3 credit hour course - 3.5 hours* onsite and 2 hours online 4 credit hour course OR 3 credit hour/4 contact hour course - 4 hours* onsite and 3 hours online 5 credit hour course OR 4 credit hour/5 contact hour course - 4 hours* onsite and 4.5 hours online 5 credit hour/6 contact hour course - 4 hours* onsite and 6.2 hours online *actual 60 minute clock hours If an accelerated course is not utilizing the IOptimize method of delivery, the contact hours for the class are the hours that the class meets each week on campus regardless of the credit hours for the course. Please refer to the Academics Catalog for contact and credit hours for each course. Every accelerated course requires at least half of the course learning objectives to be accomplished through independent learning. Plan ahead when signing up for an accelerated course. E-college for Campus Classes and Online Classes E-College is a tool used for accelerated courses, standard courses, accelerated IOptimize courses, and online courses. It can be a tool for an instructor to keep in touch with students in between classes. It can be a tool for posting and receiving assignments. To access e-College, the web address is: http://devryu.net. When e-College is used for an accelerated IOptimize course, e-College functions as a method of online course work for the campus class. Students participate in Threaded Discussions and post responses as part of their weekly online commitment. The web address for e-College in an IOptimize campus course is the same as the simplest variation of e-College used for posting assignments: http://devryu.net. The web address for participating in an online course is now the same as a campus course or IOptimize campus course e-College. The web address for online coursework is: http://devryu.net. E-College can be used to access an online course. A valid email address must be on file to participate in e-College for a campus course or to participate in an online course. Online courses are exclusively accomplished online in http:// devryu.net. The DuPage and Tinley Park Campuses host Accelerated Information Sessions and Online Orientations to explain these details and to demonstrate the navigations of getting around in both accelerated and online classes. These orientations are available on the DuPage/Addison web page at www.dpg.devry.edu under academics then Accelerated/Online Info.
