exploding Asian communities in SGV, are being fueled by
many Asian immigrants and their families that have left Taiwan,
Hong Kong and Mainland China. Like previous waves of immigration from Europe, South America and the East Coast, our new
entrepreneurs have the passion, vision, tenacity and commitment
to make their dreams a reality.
Meet Kerry Moy and Michael Kwan. Two restaurants entrepreneurs who have made a spectacular landing and impact on the
Southern California dining scene, especially in DTLA.

cclaimed TV late night show host, admired stand-up comedian, best-selling children’s book author, much-in-demand
corporate speaker, lovable TV and movie voice-over artist,
philanthropist and pioneering car builder and mechanic …it’s no
wonder that Jay Leno has always been characterized as “the hardest
working man in show business.”
Now, this hard working man, and one of the nicest people in show
business, has returned to television with a new weekly, one-hour
CNBC primetime series, “Jay Leno’s Garage.”
The series covers all things automotive including classic cars, super cars, restoration projects, road tests, investments and the inner
workings of the car collectors’ market. “Jay Leno’s Garage” explores
the world of cars, never forgetting that it’s the people behind the

An indefatigable performer, the legendary former “Tonight Show”
host still performs more than 100-150 live appearances in nightclubs,
theaters and stadiums each year. In addition to traversing the U.S.,
he has entertained in various countries, including performing for
military troops associated with the wars in Afghanistan and Bosnia.
He remains passionate about performing in front of live audiences,
including the military, and appears regularly in Las Vegas, on college
campuses around the United States and in other venues.
Moreover, Jay Leno is committed to helping those less fortunate.
Each year, he serves as Master of Ceremonies and does numerous
benefit performances, including shows for those whose lives were
devastated by the 9/11 tragedy, the tsunami in Thailand, hurricanes
in the gulf, and the severe economic downturn in Detroit. He leads
the annual Love Ride in California to benefit numerous humanitarian organizations serving people with autism, muscular dystrophy,
and Special Olympics, among many others.
Jay Leno has also served as honorary campaign chairman for several years for the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Hollywood’s
charitable arm, and he has assisted the Gender Apartheid campaign
led by wife Mavis together with the Feminist Majority, to free Afghan women of Taliban tyranny, an effort for which Mavis and The
Feminist Majority were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Jay Leno’s 2004 children’s book, “If Roast Beef Could Fly,” was a
New York Times bestseller and his follow-up kids book “How to be
the Funniest Kid in Your Class” was similarly successful. His other
book, “Leading with My Chin,” hit the bookstores in 1998.
When he is not performing, writing, doing charitable work, Leno
keeps busy doing voice-over work in movies and hit TV shows. And
in his “spare” time, he enjoys working on his collection of classic
cars and motorcycles. In fact, he has built a number of cars, including an acclaimed eco-car in his eco-friendly green garage.
Their families are from the same village in China. Kerry’s family immigrated to the US in 1955, and Michael’s family in 1989.
When Kerry’s family immigrated, they settled in Chicago where
he was born and raised with five brothers and sisters. His grandfather opened Hoe Kow Chinese Restaurant in Downtown
Chicago in 1957, which continued for more than 40 years. Kerry helped by rolling egg rolls in the basement, washing dishes,
parking cars, busing and waiting on tables. The money from the
restaurant went to put all of his six grandchildren through college.
Kerry recalls his grandfather saying, “ I made money in the restaurant business to put you through college so you never have to
come into the restaurant business again.”
He initially took his grandfather’s wisdom and entered the business world as a financial advisor managing wealth and today continues as First Vice President/Senior Portfolio Manager with the
Wealth Management Division at Morgan Stanley in Downtown
Los Angeles, as well as partner in M2K.
In 1989, Michael Kwan was just 17 years old when he first stepped
into the restaurant industry working as a busboy. In 1995 Michael opened Island Chinese Restaurant on 3rd street a small 1400
square foot restaurant located in the city of Los Angeles, near
West Hollywood and Beverly Hills. From serving tables, cooking
behind the line, delivering food, purchasing meat and produce
early in the morning, Michael’s efforts taught him every aspect of
the restaurant business.
Of the nineteen restaurants owned and operated by Michael and Kerry, six of them are in
the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. The M2K
Group recently partnered up with the Anschutz
Entertainment Group (AEG) and The Singpoli
Group to bring the new Triple 8 China Bar n Grill
to LA Live, near the Staples Center.
The M2K portfolio in DTLA also includes Bunker
Hill Bar & Grill, Spear Steak and Seafood, Wokcano, 3rd Generation Sake Bar, Monkee Cantonese
Restaurant, EMC Raw Seafood, The Backhouse
Yakitori Bar and The Big Catch Seafood.
Living The California Dream
There is always something special and unique about the people I interview and meet when we feature entrepreneurs, and
yet, some very common characteristics. Each entrepreneur
has developed a successful business in a different sector yet their passion, vision, tenacity and commitment to make
their dreams a reality is the same. When your early childhood
is marked by fleeing political oppression and limited opportunities, or living in a neighborhood where wealth and privileges
are merely viewed on television, or not having the parental
and family support and encouragement to dream big, dreams
often slip by you. For Kerry and Michael, breaking the cycles
and being given the encouragement and support of family to
dream, is a true American success story.
In 2001, “WOKCANO” was born, an Asian Restaurant and bar
on 3rd St., which became a hit right away and suddenly became a
local hot spot for many celebrities.

Mr. Hui’s charitable contributions are quite
notable. Founder of the Kin Hui Charity, he
is devoted to helping orphaned special needs
children. Additionally, Mr. Hui and Singpoli
have supported a variety of regional nonprofits affiliated with prestigious local institutions
including the Pasadena Symphony and Pops,
the American Cancer Society, California Institute of Technology, Huntington Library,
Pasadena City College, and University of California, Irvine. He is the honorary chairman
of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce of Los
Angeles.
National and regional leaders including U.S.
Rep. Judy Chu, Los Angeles County
Supervisor Michael Antonovich, State Senator Carol Liu, Controller John Chiang, Assemblyman Ed Chau and the communities of
Alhambra, Arcadia, Pasadena and San Marino
have all recognized Mr. Hui’s contributions to
Southern California. He has also been honored by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the Boy Scouts of America and the
Overseas Chinese Business Exchange.
Spearheaded by Mr. Hui’s desire to reach out
to the community, Singpoli has sponsored
award-winning floats in Pasadena’s Annual
Tournament of Roses Parade. The 2014 entry titled “Connecting Cultures, Delivering
Dreams” won the parade’s Extraordinaire
Trophy. Singpoli’s entry for 2015, “A Bright
Future”, won the Grand Marshal’s Award for
excellence in concept and design. Plans are
underway for another spectacular entry in
2016.
Mr. Hui and his wife, Ivy, live in Arcadia.
They have four children, Winnie, Kelly, Ronald and Briana.

from Taiwan when she was in high school. Anita’s father, who started a company manufacturing and trading computer parts in Taiwan, imparted in her entrepreneurship
and independent thinking. Initially, Anita moved to America to

The Chang family stayed in a room at the Holiday Inn when
they first arrived to America and later made the U.S. their home
through investments in Silicon Valley. Growing up, music, art,

Anita discovered her interest in fashion after experiencing how
a well-fitted prom dress made by her mother transformed her
when she was 14, her first year in the U.S. This began her interest in making dresses that can create the most desirable shapes
for all body types. The name Atina (for her brands Atina Luxe
and Atina Collection), is the combination of Anita and Tina, her
mother’s name. Anita spent years working in the corporate environment preparing her for the family business while feeding her
passion and talent in fashion design. She began designing dresses
