History
The Habsburg Empire strongly influenced European culture, art and science for more than
600 years, leaving their marks in all the countries they had directly or indirectly ruled.
The above map outlines the empire at the height of Franz Josef I.’s reign from 1848 to 1916,
the period that was also used as the inspiration for our culinary concept.
Kaiserhaus unites the gastronomical traditions and heritage of the former Austrian-Hungarian
Empire that extended over a dozen of nations, stretching from Austria, Hungary, Bohemia,
Northern Italy to the Balkans. It celebrates the authentic cuisine by bringing together
gastronomic delights from this melting pot with the Viennese Coffeehouse culture,
well-curated wines and craft beers.
At the heart of it all were Emperor Franz Josef I. and his wife Empress Elisabeth, known as
Sissi, who were the most respected and beloved members of the Habsburg dynasty.
Austria
As the primary capital of the
Habsburg Empire, Vienna acted
as a center of the melting pot and
was influenced by the top culinary
highlights of the crown lands, while
still staying true to its roots of
serving savoury delights and sweet
delectables that are world famous.
Hungary
Largely focusing on meat,
Hungarian cuisine is world-famous
for its rich flavours, aromas and
textures. Although Empress Sissi
was famously obsessed with her
figure, even she made an exception
when it came to the unique
Hungarian dishes.
(Southern) Tyrol
Located in the mountainous region of Northern
Italy, Tyrolean cuisine features an interesting
mix of Alpine dishes coupled with Italian
sophistication and lightness.
Bohemia
Constituting the Northern borders of the Empire,
the hilly area of Bohemia is landlocked and well
known for its fertile farmland. Viennese cuisine
was strongly influenced by the large Bohemian
population living in the metropole.
Bosnia
Located at the southernmost part of the
Austrian–Hungarian Empire, Bosnia’s cuisine has
always had both Western and Eastern influences,
bringing many Mediterranean flavours to the
melting pot’s cuisine.
