In that regard, KGS has put in place a junior golf development programme as a permanent fixture that it is very proud of. The role that this programme plays in grooming budding talents in the State has been widely recognised. Its carefully structured training schedules give ample opportunities for junior golfers to grow and develop upward to reach their maximum potentials. KGS Management takes this aspect of club activities as a very important long term contribution to members who are keen in letting their children take up golf seriously. The Junior Golf Development Programme organises competitions regularly to give the young golfers adequate exposure as serious junior players at the same time to have an appreciation of the psychology of competitions - the physical and mental toughness that a competitor must have in order to succeed in the competition. The more competitions organised by KGS the more its junior golfers gain valuable tournament experience which is quite different from the normal run of the mill weekend golf game. Many junior local and international events such as: Junior Monthly Medals, Junior Open, Junior Closed, Sarawak International Junior Golf Championship – Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup and a few minor ones as in-house affairs are permanent annual fixtures on the KGS junior golfing calendar. For the past twenty-five years professional golfers have been recruited to design, conduct and on the whole, run the KGS junior golf programmes. Parent volunteers do offer additional support in assisting the professional to strengthen the KGS junior golf programme. A total of 10 golf professionals have been employed over a period of 20 years. A golf professional from Myanmar, Mr Mya Aye, was our first resident pro. The second resident pro, Mr. Timothy Bell, was from Australia. Tim Bell, as he was fondly known around the club, started in 1994. He left the Club in 1999. Due to popular demand Tim Bell came back to rejoin KGS in 2004. Timothy Bell was credited with the improvement and upgrading of the all-round golfing standard at the Club. Many young golfers performed exceedingly well under Mr. Bell. Many of them became junior champions and won many golf tournaments. Most notable among Tim Bell’s pupils was Mary Ting Yah Ping. She had won bronze medal in SUKMA and since then she has turned pro after she finished her study in United States. Tim Bell is a member of the Australian Golf Teacher Federation. Since 2007 Tim Bell has been working in Brisbane, Queensland. Many junior golf champions such as Victor Chieng, Amanda Chin, Leonard Chin, Jonathan Woon, Anselm Chan, Dennadict Chang, Cassandra Wee and many others, are all products of Tim Bell’s tutelage. During Tim Bell’s time KGS had more than 100 junior golfers in our junior golf programme. One might say, that was the golden era of junior golf at KGS. Eight other Golf Professionals that had been employed by the Club were Chris Chaplin, Mohd Shaharuddin, Mr Tony Maloney, Mr David Jest, Mr Abdul Samat, Mr Andrew Brian Ratcliffe, Mr Mathew Jeon and currently Mr Malkit Singh. 4 • The Golfer Now we have 64 junior golfers registered under the junior development programme and more than 100 junior golfers registered as Golfing Member. KGS extended very low monthly subscription fee for our junior golfers. The Club also gives incentive to the junior golfers to participate in the major tournaments in collaboration with Sarawak Golf Association by sharing expenses based on 30/30/40 basis. (Club/SGA/Parent) Welcome to the second edition of internet version of The Golfer. Current achievement of the KGS junior golfers is as follows: Champion in KGS Team Match Play Championship 2014 & Champion in SGCC Team Match Play Championship 2014 Line up of the junior golfers (elite group in KGS) Immanuel David, Aaron Lau, Aziel Teo, Nazrul Iman, Bernard Yeo, Authur Loh, Samdrick Yeo. The Presidency of Sarawak Golf Club has passed from an illustrious President, TYT Tun Pehin Sri Hj Abdul Taib Mahmud to another equally illustrious successor, YAB Tan Sri Haji Adenan bin Haji Satem. We would like to sincerely thank Tun Pehin Sri Hj Abdul Taib Mahmud for all his support and contributions to the Club. We look forward to a new chapter under Tan Sri Hj Adenan Hj Satem and to his continued inspiration and support. Tan Sri has kindly agreed to be the patron of a new tournament bearing the Tan Sri Adenan Satem Cup for which we are very grateful. Many had been selected to represent Sarawak in SUKMA. Among KGS junior golfers that had excelled in golf tournaments local and international were: Gertrude Lee - won Sarawak Classic 2011 – Ladies Champion Abdul Rahim A Rahman - won Sarawak Closed 2012 - Men Champion Won World Junior Championship 2007 in Jakarta, Won 3rd in Team for Thailand True Vision Junior Golf 2008. Since the last magazine, a number of tournaments have been successfully held. These include the KGS Team Matchplay Competition, the Sarawak Chinese Golf Association Tournament, MALGA East meets West Tournament, Sarawak Senior Amateur Open, KGS Sarawak Gawai Open House and Golf Tournament and the recently concluded Sarawak Classic Golf Tournament. We congratulate all the winners and thank the generosity of the sponsors. Many more potential juniors are coming up and KGS will strive harder to bring the game of golf to a higher standard in the state. Given the current intensity of interest among the juniors, KGS hopes that one day its junior golf development programme could produce more Golf Professionals. The KGS new Junior Chairman elected last year – Mr Henry Chuo is very active in making sure the junior programme and Monthly Medals are run smoothly. MESSAGE There will be a lull in tournament activity during the holy month of Ramadan and we wish all Muslim members a Blessed Ramadan. We will also take this opportunity to implement some renovation and intensive maintenance work on the golf course. This would include laying of subsoil drainage pipes, verticutting and hollow tining of green and fairways. We hope for your understanding if conditions are at times and places unfavourable for play. The results will more than compensate the inconvenience every golf course must endure to be healthy. We also welcome Mr Paramjit Singh, our new Golf Superintendent who has joined us in early May. Paramjit has a reputation as a highly skilled and extremely hard working professional. We must ensure he improves our Course by extending our support for his work from members and staff alike. The Divot Repair Campaign was delayed for logistics reasons but with the supply of sand buckets with proper hooks ensured, we will embark on the campaign very soon. We look forward to the cooperation and support of all members and staff. Let us make our Golf Course a pride to behold and enjoy. He decides to play a round of golf in one of Scotland’s prestigious golf courses. He is paired with three local golfers who are not status conscious. The VIP takes a few practice swings, steps up to the first tee, and proceeds to hook the ball out of bounds. He shakes his head, reaches in his pocket, and re-tees another ball. He tells his playing partners that he is taking a Mulligan. He pounds one down the centre of the fairway about 280 yards out. With a big smile, he tells the others “In my country, we call that a Mulligan; was wondering what you called it here in Scotland.” After a moment of silence, one of the locals replies, “Hitting three.” The Perfect Husband S everal men are in the locker room of a golf club. A cell phone on a bench rings and a man engages the handsfree speaker-function and begins to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen. MAN: “Hello” WOMAN: “Honey, it’s me. Are you at the club?” MAN: “Yes.” WOMAN: “I’m at the mall now and found this beautiful leather coat. It’s only RM1,000.00. Is it OK if I buy it?” MAN: “Sure, go ahead if you like it that much.” WOMAN: “I also stopped by the Mercedes dealership and saw the new 2007 models. I saw one I really liked.” MAN: “How much?” WOMAN: “RM450,000.00.” MAN: “OK, but for that price, I want it with all the options.” WOMAN: “Great! Oh, and one more thing. The house we wanted last year is back on the market. They’re asking RM950,000.00.” MAN: “Well, then go ahead and give them an offer, but just offer RM900,000.00.” WOMAN: “OK. I’ll see you later! I love you!” MAN: “Bye, I love you, too.” The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are looking at him in astonishment. Then he smiles and asks: “Anyone knows whose phone this is?” The Army of The Lord J ack spent most of his time playing golf and going to church was the furthest from his mind but somehow on Christmas Day, he decided to attend church service. After the Christmas service, the preacher was standing at the door as he always is to shake hands with the congregation. The preacher grabbed Jack by the hand and pulled him aside. The pastor said to him, “You need to join the Army of the Lord!” Jack replied, “I’m already in the Army of the Lord, Pastor.” JOKES To break the monotony of serious writing, “The Golfer” includes jokes in this issue for your entertainment. KGS members are welcome to contribute jokes to help enrich our collection. They will be credited (or blamed) for whatever jokes they sent in and are published in this section. “The Golfer” reserves the right to edit any joke submitted. We will make sure that jokes published are decent and acceptable humour. Pastor questioned, “How come I almost never see you except at Christmas or Easter?” Jack whispered back, “I’m in the secret service, always undercover.” BAD RELIGIOUS JOKE DISCLAIMER: We recognise that No-Parking Zone F ather O’Malley, the golfing priest, parked his car in a noparking zone at KGS because he had only 5 minutes left to tee-off for a golf competition. So he put a note under the windshield wiper that read: “I have circled the clubhouse 10 times. If I don’t park here, I’ll miss the golf competition and will be disqualified. FORGIVE US OUR TRESPASSES.” After the competition, he found a citation from the KGS Chief Security Guard along with this note: “I’ve circled this clubhouse for 10 years. If I don’t impose a fine on you, I’ll lose my job. LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION.” Nothing Is More Important Than Golf! T he company Chairman, about to attempt a putt on the 12th hole, noticed a funeral procession passing and suddenly paused. He placed his cap over his heart and waited until the procession was out of sight before taking a look on the ball again. “That’s very touching, J.J.,” said his playing partner. “You’re a sentimental devil.” religious humour can be risky. It is our hope that by laughing at ourselves (and others) we can make this subject more approachable. If you find religious jokes published here objectionable, we apologise. As with most jokes, the original authors are unknown – but we thank them anyway. “It was the least I could do,” J.J. said holding the putt. “Next Saturday would have been our 25th wedding anniversary.” The Golfer • 23 21 RECIPROCAL CLUBS JOHOR BUKIT BANANG GOLF & COUNTRY CLUB** No. 1, Persiaran Gemilang, Bandar Banang Jaya, 83000 Batu Pahat, Johor Darul Takzim.
