CHUCK GRIFFITH - Executive Director
For the past two years, Merrick County volunteers have
been studying, surveying and planning for much needed
community facilities. Recently, the 4-H Council, Extension
Board and Ag Society members have visited area facilities
to identify quality aspects of facilities in other communities.
They are continuing to develop more detailed plans for new
facilities at the county fairgrounds. Merrick Foundation has pledged to
support their efforts.
Merrick Foundation is blessed to have a broad base of support from
Merrick County citizens and supporters from all over America. In fiscal
year 2013, we received donations from over 30 states from Alabama to
Wyoming. The amount of support we receive from our residents, former
residents and program supporters is heartwarming.
ECAP (Entrepreneurial Community Activation Project) meetings are held
regularly to promote communications, community pride and improve
the quality of life in Central City and the surrounding area. The group has
studied what makes communities successful (see below).
SUCCESSFUL COMMUNITIES
• Don’t avoid controversy and perceive it to be a necessity for progress
• Don’t personalize their politics and don’t support issues based on friendships
• Demonstrate an emphasis on schools based on academics, not sports
• Take risks for the good of the community
• Tax themselves for needed improvements
• Welcome newcomers’ ideas
• Demonstrate flexibility. Leadership is dispersed among many people.
Merrick Foundation will continue to train future leaders in Merrick County
who will meet the challenges of the future. Our leadership programs
provide key skills beginning at the middle school level through adulthood.
We encourage all of our citizens to support community projects and
become involved. Merrick Foundation is pleased to improve the quality of
life in Merrick County.

ESI CAMP
Merrick Foundation will again sponsor an ESI
Camp for Merrick County middle school students. The
annual week-long camp teaches the campers skills
necessary to start and run a successful business. The
camp concludes with students selling their products at
the Lone Tree Days Sidewalk Sale. Students may also
choose to sell their products at the county or state fair.
Students take daily trips to visit a variety of
businesses and hear how they began and what is
entailed in running their business. Guest speakers
also talk with the students about business topics such
as marketing, business legal status, social networking,
assessing risks, business loans, grants and other topics.
Once students have decided on their product to
sell, they calculate production and labor costs before
pricing their products. In preparation for the sidewalk
sale, students practice meeting customers, preparing
receipts, selling their product and counting change.
Students take out loans to finance their projects and
pay them back after calculating their profits.

the many projects under consideration this
year including a new or renovated movie
theater, a community center, 4-H building,

GRANT APPLICATION
PROCEDURES
Merrick Foundation has recently modified grant application
procedures.
1.The Community Grant deadline has been moved from the first
of the month to the 10th of each month (following Monday if
the 10th is on a weekend). Merrick Foundation meets on the
4th Monday of each month. No meeting is held in December.
April’s meeting is on the 4th Sunday in April (Scholarship Tea).
2.Grants are approved on the condition that grantees attend
the Annual Meeting on the 4th Monday of November AND
present a poster board (provided) display describing their
grant.
3.Grant applications over $10,000 may require representatives
to attend a board meeting. They will be notified by the Grant
Committee.
4.Grant requests over $15,000 will be reviewed in January and
June. Applicants shall be required to attend a board meeting.
5.Only one grant application form needs to be mailed to
Merrick Foundation (formerly 5 copies were required).
6.A separate (shorter) form is now available for student
educational trips. It is listed separately on the Merrick
Foundation web site. Schools are encouraged to apply as
soon as possible for student trip funding. Grants for school
trips are not to exceed the average class size in one year or
twice the average class size in two years.
Application forms and grant guidelines are available on our
website at merrick-foundation.org, or you may request one
by phone (308) 946-3707.

PAC
(Performing Arts Center)
The PAC serves its
purpose well as its
calendar is very busy with
area schools and outside
groups using the facility
for a variety of purposes.
The Merrick Arts Council
has recently completed
their first season which
has brought additional
quality
performances
to the PAC. Two Merrick
Foundation funds support the facility; the Edwin and Bernice Lock
fund and the PAC fund. These funds were established to pay for
utilities, maintenance, equipment and building improvements. The
Performing Arts Center and Bernice and Edwin Lock Theater have
allowed Merrick County residents and students an opportunity
to
experience
performances in
an
outstanding
facility.
Merrick
County has been
blessed
with
generous donors
who have made

Hand Husking:
Honoring old traditions,
building new ones
“Cold and Wet”.Those two words sum up the pickers experience
for this year’s state hand cornhusking competition. Inspite of the
weather over 100 volunteers came out to make the event a success.
It’s a testament to what Merrick County can get done when a
community works together. About 77 pickers participated in this
year’s contest, including these FFA kids who earned medals for
thier efforts.
