Annual Report - Maryland Science Center
Annual Report 2015 601 Light Street Baltimore MD 21230 www.marylandsciencecenter.org Dear Friends, It is our pleasure to present to you our 2014-2015 Annual Report of Gifts. The Maryland Academy of Sciences continues to be our region’s foremost resource for informal science learning. Through the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor and in schools and community centers throughout Maryland, the Academy has been successful in living its mission of creating awareness in everyone of the importance of science in our lives by engaging the public with exciting educational experiences. Your generosity over this past fiscal year has ensured the Academy’s success in providing science literacy to over 500,000 Marylanders. In particular, your gifts to the Annual Appeal have enabled us to continue to provide free admission to all Maryland School children who visited the Science Center on a field trip, funded our numerous outreach efforts, and allowed us to make necessary improvements to our infrastructure. We hope that you will enjoy reading our Year in Review. As you read of our accomplishments this past year, do so knowing that your generosity ensured our success. On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, the staff, and the thousands of beneficiaries of that special brand of informal science learning, we say thank you! We hope that you will again partner with us in celebrating science for the people of Maryland! Sincerely, Van R. Reiner Mark P. Huston President & CEO Chairman, Board of Trustees The Year in Review Your support of the Maryland Science Center and its mission allowed the institution to continue to expand its programmatic offerings and increase its reach into the community throughout 2014-2015. Our home at the Inner Harbor continues to welcome hundreds of thousands of families, school groups on field trips, educators, youth and scout groups, and visitors to our state, while our ability to take our signature brand of science education out into neighborhoods, libraries, and schools has grown. The Science Center continues to extend its reach into schools throughout Maryland. Two new programs, Family Science Night and Family Engineering Night, deliver hands-on science exploration to students and families at their local school. Praised by school administrators and teachers alike for its ability to bring families together for an evening, the program is led by eight Science Center staffers who work from exploration stations to experiment and guide students and parents through basic science concepts and theories. For many schools, Title I funding can be used to cover the cost of bringing this program to their school. MSC’s innovative approach to science education expanded to adult audiences with new workshops in The Shed and new experiences like Pub Science. This past year, adults learned how to pickle and ferment foods, how to can and preserve their garden’s bumper crop, how to culture yogurt and cheese, and how to build a rain barrel to collect rooftop runoff. Members of our education staff visited local bars as well, delivering our unique Pub Science program to city residents and workers during Happy Hour. These types of adult programs underscore our belief that science is part of almost everything we do. Expanding into the afterschool arena, MSC developed the STEM Youth Challenge—a five week program based on engineering and design challenges focusing on a teamwork approach. Teens from different city schools are paired up to brainstorm, design, and ultimately execute a specific engineering challenge, then teams are reconfigured in consecutive weeks so that each participant gets the benefit of working with as many fellow students as possible. In addition to building brainstorming and science capacity, the program also offers opportunities for socializing among peers. The students’ teachers also receive recognition for their involvement in the program. Themed promotional days and weekends continue to delight guests, whether it is watching thousands of dominoes topple through an artful course or taking part in a sudsy celebration of soap bubbles. Visitors discovered the everyday science that happens right outside their door during Backyard Science Days and learned about splatter patterns and viscosity during Mess Fest. A look at the tiniest science was the highlight of Nano Days and a celebration of all things Pluto marked the day when the New Horizons spacecraft flew past the dwarf planet. Leading into the holiday season, MSC put on the Twelve Days of Science, where each day featured a different winter or holiday science theme, including two do-at-home experiments to cover days during the holidays when MSC is closed. During the summer, 262 kids enrolled in Camp MSC which offered 23 different programs over the course of five weeks. Ready, Set ,Go Science is now in its seventh year of helping children in Baltimore City Head Start programs develop skills and learn about the world around them using science as the teaching tool. This coming year our education staff will once again work with city Head Start programs to give preschoolers, and both their teachers and parents, the tools they need to introduce science into the Head Start experience and extend that experience in the home. Ready, Set, Go Science reaches over a thousand students—90% of which live below the federal poverty threshold. As one of Baltimore City’s oldest residents, dating back to our origins in 1797 as the Maryland Academy of Sciences, and the opening of our permanent home in 1976, we were deeply affected by the April unrest. Attendance to the Science Center plummeted as schools forbade field trips into the city and curfews made venturing into the city a difficult prospect for families. But more importantly, our work in some of the same neighborhoods hit hardest by the unrest was interrupted as children in schools could not benefit from our unique style of science education and our work with early childhood educators who teach science concepts in daycare centers came to a halt. Yes, we experienced negative financial repercussions during this time, but our ability to continue our mission suffered equally. By the end of the school year, we were able to re-establish our ties, field trips resumed, and our Traveling Science Program—which never stopped operating during the unrest—was on the road to schools across the state. Operations returned to normal, but the impact will likely remain for some time. Using an integrative model developed by staff to create new programs, plans were hatched for the newest exhibit set to open at the end of the calendar year—Science & Main. Developed, designed and built entirely in-house, the new exhibit will fill 7,000 square feet of lightfilled space with a street corner cityscape complete with shops, a construction zone, an airport and other familiar landmarks. With the neighborhood motif serving as backdrop, guests will learn, through hands on exploration, basic science principles like how gears work in the Bike Shop, how sound travels and creates notes in the Music Shop, and the principles of lift and flight at the airport. Science & Main continues our approach of product development that underscores the importance of demonstrating how science is resident and relevant in our everyday lives. Homeschool programming continued its expansion as more and more families choose this approach for their children’s education. With both a Fall and Winter component, MSC’s homeschool programs now reach hundreds of students who spend days and weeks participating in classroom programs, laboratory workshops, and utilizing other areas of the Science Center, including the planetarium, observatory, and IMAX Theater. What was once a fledgling program designed to test the market for homeschool programs is now a multi-dimensional set of experiences that is routinely in high demand. The fiscal year drew to a close with the 38th annual Solstice celebration. Hundreds of Science Center friends and supporters came together to celebrate another year of science in the community, with all proceeds helping to underwrite the longstanding policy of offering free admission to all Maryland school groups visiting on field trips. The event raised over $300,000. All of our successes this year would not have been possible without our public and private support. Ticket sales from Science Center admission account for 59% of our total revenue. It is our public and private support that ensures continued operations, both inside the walls of the Science Center and our outreach programming outside of the walls. We are particularly grateful for the continued public support from the State of Maryland, and from the citizens of Baltimore and Howard Counties. And, of course, we are humbled by the hundreds of gifts received from private donors. Your support allows us to continue our celebration of science every day for the people of Maryland. Please know that you have our thanks and that we will continue to be excellent stewards of your generosity. At the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore, and in schools and community centers throughout Maryland, experiential, informal science learning thrives through the important work of the Maryland Academy of Sciences/Maryland Science Center. By the Numbers 83,197 people who took in a show in the planetarium during their visit Over 500,000 total people reached on-site and in the community 6,780 parents and students who attended one of MSC’s Family Science Nights at area schools 96,896 students and teachers who visited as part of a field trip 8,621 people who visited on Dollar Days Weekend in December 104,094 members who visited the Maryland Science Center 1,579 visitors to the Observatory for Friday Night Stargazing—a free program 29,807 miles traveled delivering the Traveling Science Program at schools including every county in the state Mission Statement The mission of the Maryland Science Center is to create awareness in everyone of the importance of science in our lives by engaging them with exciting educational experiences. It also is to motivate our youth to pursue careers in science and technology through community collaboration with academia, government and industry. Board of Trustees 2015-2016 Chairman: Mark P. At its inception in 1797, the Academy was an amateur scientific society–members met to discuss papers on astronomy, botany, zoology, and other subjects then known as the “natural sciences.” As the Academy continued its work through the 1800’s and 1900’s its ranks included distinguished members named Pratt, Carroll, Latrobe, Audubon, Goucher, and Pershing–all the while moving from location to location seeking larger space and envisioning a place where visitors engage in, and with, science rather than a place where they look at static collections of rocks and fossils. The vision became reality with the opening of the Academy’s Maryland Science Center in 1976. Today, and for more than 30 years, the Maryland Academy of Sciences, through its programs and exhibits at the Maryland Science Center, has demonstrated a commitment to emphasize to its many audiences the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). No other institution in the State reaches more teachers and students through its outreach programs and on-site visits dedicated exclusively to science and technology education.
