When you talk about the Iowa State Fair, everyone has their own special story about what they do, who they
see, or why they love the Fair. We have people who have been coming for 80 years, from hundreds of miles;
we have people who are going for the first time, and we have families, friends, neighbors and more that
gather for 11 special days each August. Since 1854, we have been a gathering place for food, livestock, and
zany contests. Maintaining tradition has kept us relevant, but we also know that new and exciting things bring
people through the gates each day.
We annually attract more than a million visitors from all over the world. Our Iowa State Fair is award winning,
chart topping, and one of the best, but we couldn’t do it without you. Media partners help us reach our
Fairgoers to tell them about the single largest event in the state and Iowa’s great celebration.
I hope this media guide will be useful as you plan your coverage. You will find entertainment line-ups,
livestock schedules, Fair facts, details about admission and credential requests.
As a reminder, the press office, in the lower level of the Administration Building (southwest corner of the
building), is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily during the Fair for all credentialed media. Desks, computer/phone
charging stations, internet and restrooms are available for your use.

Iowa State Fair Overview
The internationally-acclaimed Iowa State Fair is the single largest event in the state of Iowa and one of the
oldest and largest agricultural and industrial expositions in the country. Annually attracting over a million
people from all over the world, the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines is Iowa’s great celebration, a salute to the
state’s best in agriculture, industry, entertainment and achievement. It is the true heartbeat of the Midwest,
unequaled and unduplicated.
The Iowa State Fair, the inspiration for the original novel State Fair by Iowan Phil Stong, three motion pictures
and Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Broadway musical, is without a doubt the country’s most famous state fair.
National media frequently rank the Fair as one of the top events in the country. USA Weekend named
the event the #2 choice for summer fun in America, topping New York City’s Times Square, Cedar Point
Amusement Park Resort in Ohio and Disneyland in California. In 2015, USA Today ranked the Iowa State Fair #2
for Best State Fair.
Midwest Living Magazine named the Fair one of the “Top 30 Things Every Midwesterner Should Experience.”
The Fair is also included in The New York Times best-selling travel book, 1,000 Places to See Before You Die
and the subsequent travel book, 1,000 Places to See in the U.S.A. and Canada Before you Die.
Iowa’s fair is known as “America’s classic state fair” because the event features all of the traditional activities
associated with state fairs in its park-like 445-acre setting, the Fair’s home since 1886. The grounds, including
its 160 acres of Campgrounds, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Most of the buildings
pre-date World War I; many are priceless examples of American exposition-style architecture.
Throughout its history, the Fair has been a unique institution, serving to educate, inform and entertain people
from all walks of life. It is an outstanding agricultural showplace, boasting one of the world’s largest livestock
shows. Home to the largest art shows in Iowa, the Fair showcases visual and performing arts with a variety of
special exhibits and activities each day.
The Butter Cow was first sculpted at the 1911 Fair to promote the dairy industry. Since then, the Butter Cow
has had five sculptors. It has also become tradition to craft a companion sculpture.
Each year hundreds of manufacturers and industrial representatives clamor to rent coveted exhibit space. In
addition to its tremendous growth in agriculture and industry, the Fair is also an entertainment hot-spot for
Iowa and the Midwest.
Several stages feature more than half a million dollars worth of spectacular entertainment free with gate
admission. Internationally-acclaimed performers thrill thousands of fans in the Grandstand, Iowa’s original
outdoor concert venue. Hundreds of exhibitors and concessionaires feature quality merchandise and tasty
foods. Hundreds of displays, exhibitions, demonstrations, unique attractions and all kinds of competition – for
fun, for ribbons and for the pride of being chosen best – make Iowa’s Fair one of the biggest and best.
In 1881, historian James Wilson noted that, “One of the most valuable effects of the State Fair is the
fraternizing, humanizing consequences of bringing our people together...No one meets and mingles with
20,000 Iowa men, women and children on the Fairgrounds - the only place they can be brought
together - without growth of sympathy.”

Each year, the Iowa State Fair introduces several new foods, attractions and programming to its line-up. The
following are 11 of the most notable at the 2016 Iowa State Fair.

NOTHING COMPARES TO MY STATE FAIR
From family traditions and childhood memories to must-see exhibits and foods you have to eat,
everyone has their own unique State Fair story. This year we are celebrating those aspects that make
the Iowa State Fair uniquely yours. Join us as we take a trip down memory lane and anxiously await the
new and exciting things at the 2016 Iowa State Fair. Stop by a selfie station during the Fair, and share your
Iowa State Fair experience with those near and far. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #MyIowaStateFair. Let’s
celebrate what makes the Iowa State Fair so uniquely special in 2016.

REMODELED MILKING PARLOR
Stop by the renovated milking parlor, located on the north side of the Cattle Barn, to get a glimpse
into the day in the life of a dairy farmer. With updated equipment and additional milking stalls, you’re
sure to get a front row view of the action. Cows will be milked daily at 11 a.m., 3 and 7 p.m. Make sure to stop
by the Boulevard of Dairy Breeds while you are there to see six main breeds of dairy cattle in Iowa with handson activities, baby calves, and the favorite “I Milked a Cow” display.

HEDRICK’S PIG RACES
Fairgoers will squeal with delight as they watch baby pigs outfitted in racing silks compete for the
grand prize. It will be snout to snout action and thrills with plenty of pig pun comedy at every race.
This event is sure to be a crowd pleaser for all ages. Make your way to the Kids’ Zone near Little Hands on the
Farm to watch saw dust fly and cheer on your favorite pig as they race for a cookie on a silver platter. Race
times are 11 a.m., 2, and 5 p.m. daily with an additional 6:30 p.m. race on weekends.

OPENING DAY CANNED FOOD DRIVE
Enjoy $3 off the purchase of an admission ticket with the donation of three cans of non-perishable
food on Thursday, August 11. Donations will be accepted at all gates from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and will
be donated to the Food Bank of Iowa. One in eight Iowans are food insecure, so this is a great opportunity to
enjoy the Iowa State Fair while helping Iowans in need.

OMAN FAMILY YOUTH INN RENOVATIONS
Built from 1939-42, renovations on the 74 year old building began back in 2014, and we are proud to
announce the work is finished. Hundreds of exhibitors call the Oman Family Youth Inn home during
the Fair, and thanks to generous contributions, they will enjoy air conditioned accommodations with new
restroom facilities and mattresses. The downstairs kitchen also received an update, and elevators were added
for accessibility. On the main level you can find a new stage and auditorium with balcony seating. We invite
you to come see all the improvements and enjoy daily Olympic coverage from WHOTV 13.

FAIRLYMPICS
Come watch the Olympics Iowa State Fair-style every day on the Grand Concourse at 4:30p.m. Cheer
on your favorite Fairlympic team as they compete in a chore-themed relay race. Each day, two teams
of five meet up to go head-to-head for Fair Gold. Teams will have to carry a hay bale, throw cow chips through
a tire, pedal a kid’s tractor, be a human wheelbarrow, and chomp a corndog and chug lemonade. The fastest
time to complete the race will take home an Iowa State Fair Fairlympics medal and bragging rights.

RUNNING WITH THE BULL STRAW SCULPTURE
Stop by Ruan Plaza to catch Brian Sobaski’s larger than life straw sculpture. Titled “Running With
the Bull,” this oversized sculpture is described as a playful story of farm animals having a ball. All of
your favorite farm animals featured will be made out of locally sourced straw. Stop by each day to see the
sculpture as it takes over the landscape during the Fair.

NEW FOODS
Indulge in 26 new foods from delectable desserts on-a-stick to new twists on old favorites. Try a
savory selection like the Ultimate Bacon Brisket Grilled Cheese offered at the Rib Shack on the north
side of Walnut Square, Pride of Iowa Wrap at GMig’s Wrap southeast of the Varied Industries Building, Loaded
Taters on a Stick at The Grater Taters and Not Your Mama’s Taco at the Iowa Turkey Federation, both located
west of the Anne and Bill Riley Stage. Or, satisfy your sweet tooth with the Ice Cream Nachos located at
Benoit’s Nutty Bar & Root Beer Floats east of the Anne & Bill Riley Stage and Apple Fritter Bites at Applishus
with several locations around the Fairgrounds.

DISCOVERY GARDEN PAVED PATH
Step on over to the Discovery Garden outside the Agriculture Building to see the new permeable
pathway through the garden. This new path not only provides easier access for Fairgoers, but is also
eco-friendly. Made of layers of crushed regional stone and recycled glass, water is able to infiltrate the layers
and return to the soil and ground water below. With infiltration, ground water is recharged and replenished
with cool, clean ground water in a more natural way. Stop and talk to one of the Master Gardeners for more
information about pervious paving and get information on the vast selection of plants throughout the
garden.

THE GANTRY SHOW
The Gantry Show is a world-renown pedal powered, theatrical circus spectacle! Towering over
the crowd, the 18 foot high structure features multiple acts such as contortion, Chinese poles and
trapeze while rolling and spinning down the Grand Concourse. This modern twist on the circus caravan
features original music, costumes and world class talent. Catch them strolling the Fairgrounds every day at
12:30, 2:30 & 6:30 p.m.

The Fair ran 10 days from 1951-1975; the 1976 Bicentennial Fair ran 12 days; from 1977-1988, the Fair ran 11
days; in 1989 they became 12-day events; in 1992 the Fair reverted to the 11-day schedule. Traditionally, the
Fair ended eight days before Labor Day. In 1994, the Fair Board moved Fair dates up a week to accommodate
increasingly earlier school start dates. Thus, the Fair now ends the Sunday two weeks before Labor Day.
BLUE RIBBON FOUNDATION
The Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation was established by the Fair Board to conduct major capital
campaigns for the renovation and preservation of the historic Iowa State Fairgrounds. Since its inception in
1993, the Foundation has raised over $115 million through individual contributions, state appropriations, inkind services, and corporate, federal and state grants.

The Iowa State Fair Board consists of the Governor, the Secretary of Agriculture and Land Stewardship and
the President of Iowa State University; two directors from each of six geographic districts; and a secretary/
manager/CEO. During the annual State Agricultural Convention in December, representatives of county fairs
elect State Fair Board members.

CAMPGROUNDS
Sprinkled with Iowa wildflowers and shaded by century-old hickory, oak and walnut trees, the 160-acre State
Fair Campgrounds are perfect for summer or Fairtime relaxation. Fairtime camping population grows to more
than 4,000 campsites and an estimated 10,000 people.
Camping facilities include 2,300 sites with water and electrical and 734 sites with full hook-ups: water,
electrical, and sewer. Four dumping stations allow convenient waste disposal for RVs and trailers. Three large
bathhouses with showers, toilets and sinks accommodate thousands. A safe shelter, including an office and
bathhouse, was completed in 2003.

FACILITIES
The 130-year-old Fairgrounds cover approximately 450 acres. Most of the Fair’s major buildings pre-date
World War I. While the Fair had operated in the black for many years, maintenance funds had never kept up
with need and many facilities had critically deteriorated. In 1993, the Blue Ribbon Foundation was created and
charged with raising funds to preserve and renovate the grounds.
Several Fair buildings, including the Agriculture Building (1904) and Sheep Barn (1915, 1923, and 1939), are
priceless examples of classic, exposition-style architecture. The Oman Family Youth Inn, a Works Progress
Administration (WPA) project (1939) is an outstanding example of Art Deco. Other major buildings (and dates

HISTORY
The first Fair was held in 1854, in Fairfield, with an estimated 7,000 to 10,000 people in attendance and a
budget of $323. From 1855 to 1879, the Fair was held in the following cities:

The Fair moved to Des Moines in 1879. The Legislature appropriated $50,000 for the purchase of the present
location in 1884, on the condition that the City of Des Moines raised an equal sum for site improvements. The
new Fairgrounds were dedicated on September 7, 1886. Thus, the 1986 Fair marked the 100th anniversary
of the Fairgrounds; that same year the Iowa State Fair and Exposition Grounds Historic District was officially
entered in the National Register of Historic Places.

LIVESTOCK AWARDS, JUDGING AND SHOWS
Sale of Champions
During the prestigious Iowa State Fair Sale of Champions, 16 4-H and FFA exhibitors sell their champion
livestock to hometown and national supporters. The animals represent the Grand and Reserve Grand
Champions in each of their respective species as selected during the Fair’s livestock shows. The Iowa State Fair
features one of the largest livestock shows in the world and winning a class – let alone showing a champion
animal – is highly coveted.
The Sale of Champions is managed by the Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA) and is hosted
at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 20, in the Penningroth Media Center inside the John & Emily Putney Family
Cattle Barn sponsored by Vermeer. For more information about the Sale of Champions and the IFAA, please

Last year’s sale raised $339,850 and broke six records. When combined with the $226,000 of scholarships and
performance and carcass awards, almost $566,450 was awarded to young livestock exhibitors through the
auspices of the IFAA. Since the inception of the Sale of Champions in 1988, the IFAA has given out more than
$67.3 million through sale proceeds and scholarships to deserving youth participating in agricultural-related
projects and interested in agricultural-related careers.

FOOD DEPARTMENT
The Iowa State Fair boasts a food competition that is unlike any other Fair, with 203 food divisions and
809 classes. Over the 11-day course of competition, over $72,000 in prizes will be awarded, including Fair
premiums and special sponsorship prizes and cash rewards. Judging for the Food Department competitions
takes place daily in the four judging rooms located in the Elwell Family Food Center.

FINE ARTS AWARDS, JUDGING AND DISPLAY
The Iowa State Fair is home to Iowa’s largest art show, largely due to the success of the Fine Arts competition
that takes place each year at the Fair. Participants have the opportunity to enter artwork using the following
media: acrylic/tempera, drawings, digital, fiber, glass, jewelry, mixed media, oil painting, pastels, potter, prints,
sculpture and watercolor.
Entries are mailed to the Fair in the late spring and are judged prior to Fairtime. During the Fair, the Patty and
Jim Cownie Cultural Center is transformed by the artwork of thousands of Iowans. Displays are open daily
from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The photography competition is one of the Fair’s largest competitive events. The theme class for 2016 is “Fog.”
The photography display is located on the third floor of the Patty and Jim Cownie Cultural Center.
BILL RILEY IOWA STATE FAIR TALENT SEARCH
In 1946, Iowa Falls native Bill Riley emceed variety shows held at the Iowa State Fair by KRNT radio. In 1957,
Bill approached Fair Secretary Lloyd Cunningham about showcasing talented kids during the State Fair. Two
years later, Bill Riley’s first Iowa State Fair Talent Search was held. By August of 1959, Bill had crisscrossed the
state holding numerous talent shows. During the Fair, Iowa’s brightest young stars performed for delighted
Fairgoers.
During the 2016 fair, the Talent Search will celebrate its 57th anniversary. Approximately 100 local qualifying
shows are held across the state. There are seven days of preliminary competition for Sprouts (ages 2-12), and
Seniors (ages 13-21), followed by the semi-finals and, ultimately, the selection of one Sprout champion and
one Senior champion. Bill Riley’s son, Bill Riley, Jr., continues to host the show today.

The Des Moines Symphony is Central Iowa’s largest and most active
year-round professional performing arts organization. Led by Music Director
Joseph Giunta, the Orchestra has established an outstanding national reputation
as one of the country’s leading regional orchestras, performing a regular series
of Masterworks, Pops, Family and Education Concerts.
The Des Moines Symphony’s Iowa State Fair Concert features family-friendly
and patriotic favorites, including classics of the American songbook featuring
Broadway baritone Hugh Panaro, and a very special composition inspired by
the Iowa State Fair itself. Peter Hamlin’s musical celebration of the sights and
sounds of the Iowa State Fair, Symphony on a Stick, was commissioned by
the Des Moines Symphony as part of its 2015-2016 Season, and the Orchestra
is delighted to share this larger-than-life tribute – including accompanying
cinematography – at the very event which inspired its composition.
CAPTIVA 9 PM
Hailing from Kansas City, Missouri, Captiva formed in October 2013 during a
high school detention sentence. First gaining attention on college campuses
around the Midwest, the band has been playing at small clubs around the
region and opening for other national touring acts for the last two years. In
2014, Captiva released their debut self-titled EP, which includes singles “Road
to Ruin” and “Chemicals.” The band has plans to tour and return to the studio to
begin recording their first full-length album.

Formed in 1983 as Roxx Regime, Stryper went on to become the first visibly

guitarist for the band and they spent nearly 5 years on the road. The song “Rain

The daughter of famed studio guitarist and producer Fred Carter, Jr., Deana
Carter grew up exposed to the wide variety of musicians her father worked with

Carter released her multi-platinum record, Did I Shave My Legs for This?, in
1996, which debuted at number two on the U.S. Top Country Albums chart

The Nadas are an Iowa-based favorite consistently filling clubs and venues
across America and selling more than 75,000 albums through their own
Authentic Records label. Their name literally means “nothing,” but their music
blends everything great about American folk, rock, blues and country. The band
fully embraces their muscular, anthem style rock in songs like “Long Goodbye,”
“Bitter Love,” “Dodged a Bullet” and “Last to Know.” The Nadas are currently
enjoying the success of their most recent album, ICYMI, a greatest hits album
featuring twenty fan favorites and one new track.

Vixen is an all-female rock band that found success in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s
as part of the glam metal scene. Vixen’s first hit single, “Edge of a Broken Heart,”
landed on the Billboard charts fueled by heavy video rotation on MTV. Their
first album, Vixen, celebrated two more hits with “Cryin” and “Love Made Me,”
both charting on the Billboard Hot 100 Top 40. In 1990, Vixen’s second album,
Rev It Up, produced hits “How Much Love,” “Love Is A Killer” and “Not A Minute
Too Soon,” cementing their reputation as songwriters and all-star performers.

Hailing from Texas, Chase Bryant was born with music in his blood. His
grandfather was Jimmy Bryant, the legendary Nashville session guitarist and
his uncles, Jeff and Junior Bryant, were founding members of the country band,
Ricochet. After signing a record deal, the company was so impressed with
Bryant that they agreed to let him co-produce his own album. In the summer of
2014, he released his debut album, “Take It On Back,” which went Top 40 on the
country singles charts and rose to 27 on the country airplay listings.

For more than fifty years, The Temptations have prospered, propelling popular
music with a series of smash hits and sold-out performances throughout the
world. The Temptations began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. In
1964, the Smokey Robinson written-and-produced “The Way You Do the Things
You Do” turned the band into stars. A string of hits followed, including “My Girl,”
“It’s Growing,” “Since I Lost My Baby,” “Get Ready” and many more. With a lineup
that includes founding member Otis Williams, the group has remained active,
perpetuating what they’ve long referred to as “the tradition.”

EMISUNSHINE 8 PM
EmiSunshine is an 11-year-old prodigy from East Tennessee. Capturing national
attention after a flea market performance of Jimmie Rodgers’ “Blue Yodel No.
6” went viral on YouTube, EmiSunshine received an invitation to perform on the
Today show. Her performance led to performances on Marty Stuart’s Late Night
Jam at the Ryman during CMA Music Fest and ongoing performances at the
Grand Ole Opry. EmiSunshine now performs about 150 shows a year, touring
with family as her father plays the upright guitar, her brother plays the mandolin
and her uncle plays the drums.

Lynch Mob was formed in 1989 by former Dokken band members, George
Lynch and Mick Brown. Their first album, Wicked Sensation, was released in
1990, peaking at number 46 on the US Charts. Subsequent releases included
Lynch Mob, Smoke This, Revolution and Smoke and Mirrors. In December 2013,
Lynch Mob hit number 6 on the Billboard Hard Rock Albums Chart with their
album Sun Red Sun, highlighting the unique pairing of vocalist Oni Logan and
George Lynch.
DOREEN’S JAZZ NEW ORLEANS 7 & 9 PM
Doreen’s Jazz New Orleans started on the streets of New Orleans thirty years
ago. Doreen Ketchens, the leader of the group, has been nicknamed Queen
Clarinet, the female Louis Armstrong and Lady Louie. She has performed with
Ellis Marsalis, Jon Faddis, Trombone Shorty, Al Hirt, Dorothy Donagan, The Black
Crows and Jennifer Warrens. Her husband Lawrence produces music and plays
the tuba, valve trombone and piano for the group. Along with performing,
Doreen and Lawrence regularly share their talents with schools around the
world, educating students and sharing the culture and music of New Orleans.
CANAAN SMITH 8 PM
Since bursting on the scene with the single “We Got Us,” Canaan Smith has been
busy touring with Darius Rucker, Dierks Bentley and Florida Georgia Line. In
July 2014, Smith released his sophomore single, “Love You Like That,” which hit
number one on the radio charts and became one of the best-selling singles of
2015. In June 2015, he released his first full-length studio album, Bronco. Smith’s
second single, “Hole In a Bottle,” is rapidly climbing the charts today. Along with
his personal success, Smith also co-wrote the hit “Runaway” by country band
Love and Theft, which made it to number 10 in the Billboard Hot Country Songs
and 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2009.

self-titled album in 1986, and celebrated a Top 20 hit with “Arlene.” Three years

from his “Live at I.V. Labs” session, recorded in Chicago, as well as performing all

Hailing from California, RATT has been recognized as instrumental in the
formation of the early 1980’s Los Angeles glam metal scene, also known as
“hair metal” or “pop metal.” Their 1984 debut album, Out of the Cellar, sold

Femme Fatale is an all-female rock band that originated in Albuquerque, New

One” and “Falling In and Out of Love,” the band’s signature songs. Femme Fatale

in history by Billboard Magazine. T. Graham Brown: T. Graham Brown started
performing as part of the beach-music duo, Dirk & Tony. He then joined the

spawned a number one single, “Hell or High Water”. His second album, Brilliant

DIERKS BENTLEY
Dierks Bentley’s rock-flavored country music has been a staple
on the airwaves since the release of his 2003 self-titled album,
which led to the number one hit “What Was I Thinkin’.” Since
then, Bentley has been a staple on the road, opening for both
George Strait and Kenny Chesney before embarking on his own
tour.
2005 was a huge year for Bentley with his second album,
Modern Day Drifter, released.
He had a hand in the creative process of the album, penning
eight of its eleven tracks. Modern Day Drifter went platinum
and earned him two number one hits “Come a Little Closer” and
“Settle For a Slowdown.” With his new status as a major player in
the music industry, Bentley then won the CMA Horizon Award and was invited to join the Grand Ole Opry. At
just 29 years old, He became the youngest musician to ever be inducted.
In 2006, he released Long Trip Alone, which produced the number one hits “Every Mile a Memory” and “Free

Celebrating 26 years, the Iowa State Fair has showcased tractor pulling on the Fairgrounds since 1990.
Tractor pulling is a competitive motor sport in which modified farm tractors, or modified tractors draft a
metal sled containing a box filled with weight along a course. The tractor that pulls the sled the farthest
distance is declared the winner. A rare few reach the end of the course, known as the “full pull.” If more than
one competitor reaches the full pull mark, a pull-off is held to determine the winner. Known as “the world’s
heaviest motorsport,” the goal of tractor pulling is to determine the strongest machine and the best driver.
The tractor and truck pull is not about speed, but rather distance pulled.

AN EVENING WITH JEFF DUNHAM
Jeff Dunham’s television specials have been the highest rated programming in Comedy Central history, his
DVD sales have reached seven million units, his videos have received almost a billion views on YouTube, and
his live concerts have become mega-events played in front of sold-out arenas worldwide.
By the time he was ten, Jeff Dunham was performing anywhere he could find an audience. After graduating
from Baylor University, he moved to Los Angeles and soon became a sensation on the national comedy circuit.
Dunham’s self-produced “Arguing With Myself,” became his first one-hour prime time special and it premiered
on Comedy Central in 2006. The audience reactions were explosive, and Jeff Dunham became a comedy
phenomenon, reviving a lost art with new levels of comedy and with a contemporary voice. In 2007, “Spark
of Insanity,” his second Comedy Central special, premiered to record ratings and million plus DVD sales. In
2008, “A Very Special Christmas Special” premiered with 6.6 million viewers to become the cable channel’s
most-watched program ever. He continued to release two more stand-up specials, both of which were
tremendously successful. Today, Dunham’s global appearance is undeniable. He was named top-grossing live
comedy act in the world in 2009 and 2010 by Pollstar and has sold out stadium-sized shows across
three continents.

Since early 2013, The Dead Daisies have taken the Rock world by
storm, releasing two albums to date and touring with the biggest
names in rock including: ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bad
Company, Judas Priest, KISS, Whitesnake and Def Leppard. 2015 was
a banner year that saw the band playing to over 300,000 people
around the world in support of their second album, Revolución,
joining the line-up for some of the biggest European rock festivals
including Download and Graspop, touring around the globe with
Whitesnake and KISS, plus a sold out headline show in Paris. The
band returned to the UK for the first time in two years to play a
series of headline club shows, including the special guest slot at
Planet Rock Stock in Wales. With a new album, Make Some Noise, in

Kelsea Ballerini is a country-pop singer and songwriter from
Knoxville, Tennessee. She moved to Nashville at 15 years old to
pursue her dream of singing and writing songs, and at 19 years

and a recording deal later that same year.
Ballerini’s debut single, “Love Me Like You Mean It,” was released
in 2014. It slowly became a hit, reaching number five on Billboard’s
Country Singles Chart and number one on Billboard’s Country Airplay Chart. As her popularity grew,
Ballerini was named one of 2014’s Next Women of Country by CMT.
Today, Ballerini is celebrating the success of her first album, “The First Time,” which debuted at number

Combining his lighthearted personality with energetic, foot-stomping tunes, Bandaloni gives musical
entertainment a funny facelift as he impresses audiences with his harmonious multitasking. Join in the fun as
he belts out familiar family favorites while playing guitar, harmonica, tambourine, high-hat, kick-drum, snare
and more – all at the same time! Roll up your sleeves for a little audience participation, and get ready for his
show-stopping talent and musical pyrotechnics.
HEDRICK’S PETTING ZOO
Daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Kids’ Zone
Hedrick’s Petting Zoo is the ideal place to capture a glimpse of exotic animals you won’t find in the typical
Iowa barn. Fairgoers can get up-close-and-personal with zebras, kangaroos, camels and more in a safe and
fun environment.
SANDSCAPES SAND SCULPTURES
Daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Varied Industries Building Atrium
Sandscapes, a team of national, international and world champion sand sculptors, will return to the Iowa
State Fair to construct an agriculture-themed masterpiece. Watch the progress unfold as the team works
throughout the Fair to complete the sculpture, showcasing their talents from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. each day.
HEDRICK’S PIG RACES
Daily from 11 a.m., 2 & 5 p.m. with an extra 6:30 p.m. race on weekends in Kids’ Zone
Fairgoers will squeal with delight as they watch baby pigs outfitted in racing silks compete for the grand
prize. It will be snout to snout action and thrills with plenty of pig pun comedy at every race. This event is sure
to be a crowd pleaser for all ages. Make your way to the Kids Zone near Little Hands on the Farm to watch saw
dust fly and cheer on your favorite pig as they race for a cookie on a silver platter.
RUNNING WITH THE BULL STRAW SCULPTURE
Daily, Ruan Plaza
Brian Sobaski will have fair goers running to Ruan Plaza, to see a larger than life straw sculpture. Titled
“Running with the Bull” this oversized sculpture is described as a playful story of farm animals having a ball.
Everything from pigs to ducks will be featured and made out of locally sourced straw. Stop by each day to see
the sculpture as it takes over the landscape during the fair.
THE BISTREVSKY BROTHERS VARIETY SHOW
Shows daily at Noon, 3 and 6 p.m. on Expo Hill
After being born and realizing they were probably going to be stuck with each other for the rest of their lives,
Dmitrious and Alex decided to band together to form a comedy, circus and acrobatics duo like the world
has never seen. Weird, silly, absurd, intense and ridiculous are all adequate adjectives when describing the
“Bistrevsky Brothers” to your friends.

The Gantry Show is a self-contained, portable, theatrical Circus spectacle. It travels on an innovative pedal
driven 22’ high stage-like mechanical apparatus, able to roam about the fair grounds. The act showcases
multiple aerial and ground acts, such as contortion, Chinese poles and trapeze.
OSIELLA
Shows daily at 7:30 p.m. , Grandfather’s Barn
OSIELLA has pushed the technical boundaries of what music could/should be. It’s members span from West
Africa, Las Vegas, Brooklyn and Indiana. The eclectic members of this band create one of the most unique
groups ever. With an intriguing debut album, Year in Review, every listener will find something to enjoy within
this ensemble.
MIDWAY
Belle City Amusements offer something for everyone, from the infamous Double Ferris Wheel and the
returning Moonraker, to kiddie rides and games of skill. The Midway is open 10 a.m. to Midnight each day of

KIDS’ ZONE
Family fun is easy to find in the Kids’ Zone – a special area packed with food, rides and entertainment, all
planned with our young Fairgoers in mind!
LITTLE HANDS ON THE FARM
This exhibit teaches children the importance of agriculture and how it affects their daily lives in a fun and
interactive way. Children ages 2 to 10 become farmers at this free, hands-on exhibit. Children obtain a
gathering basket and proceed along a path that includes a garden, grain bin, apple orchard, chicken coop,
tractor shed, sheep barn and dairy barn. After gathering particular items along the way they get the chance to
sell these items at the Little Hands on the Farm farmers’ market and earn a Little Hands dollar to spend at the
grocery store for such items as a piece of fruit, a granola bar or an ice cream sandwich. Open daily 9 a.m. to 8
p.m., Little Hands on the Farm is located north of the Paul R. Knapp Animal Learning Center.

BLUE RIBBON KIDS
Blue Ribbon Kids, the Fair’s special club for ages 10 and under, allows children to experience the Fair from a
unique perspective. Blue Ribbon Kids members will get a rare glimpse at the heart of the Iowa State Fair and
won’t simply be watching demonstrations — they’ll be part of the action. During weekdays of the Fair, Kids’
Club members will have the opportunity to participate in seven FREE fun-filled activities. All events start at
10 a.m. at the Fun Forest Stage located west of the Agricultural Building and will last 30-45 minutes. Children
can sign up at any Kids’ Club event or download a form from iowastatefair.org and bring it to the event. Blue
Ribbon Kids also offers exclusive members-only weekend events which are open to Kids’ Club members who
were on the membership roster by May 1, 2016.

Credentials and Media Information
All members of the working press are welcome to the 2016 Iowa State Fair – set August 11-21 – and will be
offered a limited number of gate credentials and parking passes at no charge to assist with Fair coverage.
The following procedures are in effect to accommodate working media quickly and efficiently and to screen
out non-affiliated persons seeking media privileges. The Fair’s Marketing Department receives a limited
number of media credentials. To make the best use of these credentials, the following guidelines were used.
Media credentials will be granted to:
• Accredited print, radio and television outlets
• Freelancers with proof of news assignment on letterhead from the assigning company
Media credentials will not be granted to:
• Sales staff
• Persons or organizations who are writing or gathering material for books

• Unfunded or exploratory documentary crews
• Freelancers without proof of news assignment
• Online services that are non-content based
• Media outlets exclusively covering political candidates
• Online services that exclusively deliver news related to political coverage
• Organizations that film or take photos for resale
• Bloggers not on assignment for an accredited media outlet, independent bloggers or blogs/websites that have primarily owner or user-generated content
• Persons or organizations whose principal purpose for attending the Fair is, in our judgment, for reasons other than covering the event as working news media
Organizations that do not qualify for media credentials are welcome on the grounds with paid admission.
All organizations must receive expressed permission from the Iowa State Fair to film or photograph within
the Fairgrounds. Please send requests to marketing@iowastatefair.org and include your organization name, a
link or copy of your publication and the purpose/subject matter of your coverage. For promotional or private
video shoots, please contact Off-Season Events at 515/262-3111, ext. 203.
Failure to comply with any of these procedures or unauthorized use of a credential (including attempts to sell)
may result in refusal, forfeiture of credential privileges, removal from the premises and/or prosecution.
TYPES OF CREDENTIALS
ADMISSION
Single gate tickets are issued to media requesting credentials. Each gate ticket is valid for one daily admission.
Please request one ticket per day of coverage. Credentials are not valid for admission to Grandstand, Livestock
Pavilion or Jacobson Exhibition Center shows.
PARKING
Limited media parking is available in the Delta Lot on a space available basis. The lot is located off Dean
Avenue just east of East 30th Street. Parking passes are issued in the form of dated mirror hangers and are
required for entry into the Delta Lot.
SATELLITE TRUCK
Please indicate in the special requirements section if you need to bring a satellite truck on the grounds as it
will need special parking credentials to enter the grounds. Include the license plate number of the vehicle,
size of vehicle and any vehicle specific needs. Please include a cell phone number and full contact information
for an on-call staff member should any issues arise. Arrangements for satellite truck parking must be made in
advance due to limited space availability.
PRE-FAIR PASS
Admission to the Fairgrounds on preparation days, Monday, August 8 – Wednesday, August 10, is free.
However, vehicles that wish to enter the grounds need a Pre-Fair Pass. There is no charge for this credential.
Pre-Fair passes cannot be supplied at gates on these days.
TICKETED FAIR EVENTS
No filming, taping, photography or recording of any Grandstand show or event will be permitted without
prior consent and agreement. Requests for backstage passes and/or reviewer seats are referred to artists’
management. Photos of each grandstand performance are available up on request, email marketing@iowastatefair.org at least 48 hours prior to the show. Photos will be emailed out that evening
to all media outlets on the request list. Requests for pit passes, infield or horse show access are handled

individually. Requests for photos of specific events are welcomed. Special requests should be indicated in the
special requirements section or sent to marketing@iowastatefair.org.
PRESS OFFICE
The air-conditioned Press Office, located in the Administration Building, is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily during
the Fair. Wireless internet access, computer hook-ups and restrooms are available for use. Please use the
outside entrance on the southwest corner of the Administration Building.
APPROVAL AND DELIVERY
Credential requests must have been received by the Iowa State Fair Marketing Department by August 1.
Requests received after this date are not guaranteed credentials. All requests are subject to approval based
on credential guidelines. Credentials are mailed via the United States Postal Service. If you would like your
credentials sent via next day service, please include your account number with your request under special
requirements. No credentials will be mailed after August 1 Requests received after August 1 will be held at
our Volunteer Office and will be available to pick-up August 11-21 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The Volunteer Office is
located at East 30th and Dean Avenue.
State Fair Ticket Office
The Fair’s Ticket Office is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday and 9 a.m. to Noon on Saturday for
walk-up orders only. It is located on the front porch of the Administration Building on the Fairgrounds. All
tickets available while supplies last.

Horse Shows
An additional admission fee is required for the afternoon and evening horse shows listed below. All paid
horse shows take place in the Richard O. Jacobson Exhibition Center. Tickets for these events are $5 for adults

The Iowa State Fair, America’s classic state fair, welcomes everyone to its celebration of pride and achievement
held annually in August.
The Fair Board is committed to making the Fair’s 450-acre, 129-year-old facility accessible to all. No qualified
individual shall, on the basis of disability, be excluded from participating in or be denied the benefits of public
services, programs or activities held on the Fairgrounds.
Suggestions for improvements and additional services are always welcomed by the Fair Board, which will
continue efforts to make the Fairgrounds accessible to everyone.
Renovation always complies with federal specifications and guidelines related to accessibility. As maintenance
and modernization funds become available, the special needs of all Iowans will be kept foremost in mind.

Around The Fair Transportation
•Mattress Firm trams pulled by John Deere tractors provide convenient transportation from inner-ground
stop/pick-up locations. Operating daily beginning at 8 a.m., these trams feature a curbside electric/hydraulic
lift, making them wheelchair accessible. (See inner-ground tram map.)
•Free Campgrounds shuttles sponsored by the Iowa Soybean Association, operated by Clearfield Lions and
pulled by John Deere tractors powered by Soy Bio Diesel run daily beginning at 8 a.m. One wheelchairaccessible unit will be available approximately every 15 minutes. These shuttles run continuously round-trip
between the Campgrounds, Farm Bureau Pioneer Hall, the Richard L. Easter Museum Complex and the inner
grounds.

•Golf-cart mini-shuttle service (not wheelchair accessible) from north parking lots to inner gates is available all 11 days, beginning at 8 a.m. While offered as a free service, riders may make donations to the The
Shriner’s Hospital for Children and Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Transportation Fund. Golf carts are not available for rent
for reasons of safety and liability.

Northern Iowa: From I-35, take I-235 to Exit 10A then head east on E University Avenue approximately four
miles to the Fairgrounds.
Southern Iowa: From I-35, take IA 5/US 65 to Exit 79 then head west on E University Avenue approximately
four miles to the Fairgrounds.
Eastern Iowa: From I-80 take Exit 141 (Hwy. 65 Bypass), travel south on Hwy. 65 to Exit 79 and head west
on Hwy. 163 (E University Avenue) approximately three miles to the Fairgrounds. It is suggested that visitors
enter the Fair parking lot at E 36th as a left-hand turn may not be allowed into the grounds at E 33rd at certain
times.
Western Iowa: From I-235, take Exit 10A then head east on E University Avenue approximately four miles to
the Fairgrounds.
