to SharkShield - Operating Instructions and Accessories
Shark attacks are often over dramatised, however shark phobia is a
primal fear. This fear remains in the recesses of our mind; sharks greatly
affect entry level participation across all sea activities and impact on the
enjoyment of those already participating. The anecdotal evidence from
Shark ShieldTM users is overwhelming in substantiating our belief that
this technology will change the way people work and play in the sea,
through the peace of mind it offers.
Shark ShieldTM allows people to enter the water without fear. Shark
interaction can still be enjoyed by those seeking to do so – but at a
safe distance. The protective wave-form has no affect on other marine
creatures or long lasting affect on the shark once it has departed the
area of the protective field. We no longer have to kill sharks to allow us
to venture into their environment.

ABOUT SHARK SHIELD
GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS (Please read carefully before charging and using the product)
The Shark Shield™ generates an electrical field that is detected by the shark via its sensory receptors,
known as Ampullae of Lorenzini, found on the snouts of all predatory sharks. The initially mild
discomfort increases if the shark approaches the field, until it becomes intolerable. The shark will
then veer away and leave the immediate area.
OPERATION
The Shark Shield™ unit is activated by rotating the knob on the rear of the case. Turn fully clockwise.
The unit will flash RED, beep and go to a solid GREEN.
The conducted electrical field is propagated via two electrodes at either end of the antenna. Contact
with, or very close proximity to the ELECTRODES may cause twitching of the surface muscles under
the skin. Responsible supervision of children is required at all times, to ensure the Shark Shield™ is
used correctly and in accordance with the manufacturers guidelines.

BATTERY INFORMATION
•
Continual operating time approx. =6 hours - depending on water temperature.
•
Internal battery construction: 3 Lithium Ion 103450 high capacity cells in series, output 11.1v
1850 mAh with thermal overload and discharge protection.
•
Battery life: Nominal 300 charge and discharge cycles if treated with care.
NOTE: Exposure to extremes of heat e.g. leaving inside a hot motor vehicle exposed to the sun will
seriously degrade the battery life. Protect unit by wrapping in a towel or storing in the trunk. The
battery is fully charged in 4 hours. Never store the unit with battery fully discharged i.e. TOP UP
battery after use.
CHARGER
Shark Shields™ come with a mains 240v / 110v charger. An ‘inverter’ available through most electrical
stores will allow charging via a 12v accessory plug in motor vehicles and boats - The Shark Shield™
charger can then be plugged into the ‘inverter’. The output voltage of the charger is 18v.
If the antenna is not fully immersed in SEAWATER the GREEN LED will flash and no output will be
generated. Once the antenna is fully immersed in seawater it will revert to a solid GREEN – this
indicates an output is being generated and a field is being propagated.
BOTH ELECTRODES MUST BE FULLY IMMERSED TO GENERATE A FIELD.
ALERT – If the RED LED flashes or illuminates at any time while in the water the user is advised to
leave the water immediately. This could indicate a circuit board malfunction and advice should be
sought from the manufacturer. Alternate RED and GREEN flashing LED’s, together with an audible
alarm, indicates the battery is low. The unit will run for approximately 10 additional minutes. The user
needs to leave the water and recharge the unit.
SAFE OPERATING PROCEDURES
1. Ensure the unit is fully charged prior to use.
2. Always leave the unit on while in the water.
3. The antenna MUST be fully extended at all times. The maximum field is generated when the
antenna is fully extended and allowed to trail behind the user. DO NOT wind or coil the antenna
during use as this will prevent a full field from being generated. Although a signal may still be
present the field will be localised and will reduce the deterrent properties.
4. To confirm the unit is operational the user simply needs to pass a hand within 100mm (4”) of
the electrode in the antenna. Most users will experience a mild electrical stimulation in the form
of surface muscle activity.
5. The deterrent field forms a protective field in the water. In normal ocean environments, sharks
will actively avoid entering the field. The user MUST avoid situations where sharks are excited
and aggressive, or where feeding is taking place and blood or offal is present in water.
6. Continual operating time of approx. 6 hours (depending on water temperature).
7. The Shark Shield™ will not work in freshwater as saltwater is the electrolyte for the
electrical field.
Your Shark Shield™ is intended for use as a personal product only. It must not be modified,
re-engineered or used for anything other than its intended purpose. Modification or use of the
product for any purpose or in any manner other than as described in this information sheet will be
at the sole risk of the user and may void the manufacturer’s warranty and/or render it ineffective
or inoperative. The manufacturer will not be liable for any injury, loss or damage as a result of the
modification or incorrect use of this product.

CHARGING THE UNIT
1. Ensure unit is switched off prior to charging.
2. Insert the charger plug into the recess at the rear of the unit.
3. When the charger is inserted and the charger switched on, the unit will flash RED.
4. When fully charged the unit will change to a solid GREEN. Full charging will be achieved in
approximately four hours.
5. If the unit displays alternate RED and GREEN flashing LED’s, remove the charger, ensure the unit
is SWITCHED OFF, wait sixty seconds and re-insert the charger.
6. Charge after each use.
IMPORTANT CHARGING INFORMATION
•
If your Shark Shield™ is brand new, the battery in this unit is NOT charged. Please charge fully
prior to use.
•
Use of alternate chargers may damage the unit.
•
Any previous Shark Shield™ charger you have may not charge this new unit. Please discard any
old charger to prevent confusion.
•
If you have additional Shark Shields previous to this model, the new charger will charge older
units. The old charger may not charge the new units.
•
Do NOT charge Shark Shield™ when wet.
•
Wash in fresh water as soon as possible after use and dry the two charging pins prior to
charging. The charger supplied with this unit fits onto the two charging pins on the
power module.
•
The plug is curved and has an arrow which lines up with an arrow on the case.
•
The unit (battery) will NOT charge unless the red on/off switch is completely rotated
anti-clockwise to the off position.
•
Sometimes (particularly when the battery has run flat), the blinking red light which designates
“charging”, may take extra time (around thirty seconds) to activate.
•
The new charger supplied with this unit has interchangeable connections for various countries.
When attaching the connection please ensure that the plug unit is fully pushed into the socket,
you will hear an audible click as it is pushed home.
MAINTENANCE
•
Always rinse the unit in fresh water and allow drying prior to storage.
•
To obtain the maximum life from the lithium batteries charge after each use and always store
the unit charged.
•
NEVER leave the unit in direct sunlight or exposed to excessive heat in a vehicle. Exposure to
heat will adversely affect the life and performance of the lithium batteries.
•
DO NOT attempt to open the housing of the unit. Opening or attempting to open the unit may
affect its performance and will void the manufacturer’s warranty.
•
The black nylon braid on the Freedom 7 and Surf antennas may, over time, show signs of
wear and fray. The nylon braid is purely cosmetic and plays no important function, therefore
frayed ends can be cut off carefully with scissors. It is important to never cover either of the
two electrodes with electrical tape or something similar as this will reduce the output of the
protective field. Tape and floats can be added to the antenna between the two electrodes.
•
Shark Shield uses only the best woven stainless steel available in the electrodes of the antenna.
However, we find what the manufacturer calls a ‘tea Stain’ occurs which will not
5
eventuate into a full blown “rust” but rather a stain which will have no affect at all on the efficiency of
the electrode to create the waveform protective field.
STORAGE
When storing your Shark Shield™ unit:
1. Charge prior to storage.
2. Wind the antenna into a coil – DO NOT fold.
3. Ensure the unit is switched off.
4. The unit should be dried before storage.
5. Keep in a cool dry place – Min. 0° C (32° F) Max. 60° C (140° F)
WARNINGS
SHARKS ARE DANGEROUS – Sharks can be dangerous and often unpredictable creatures. While
extensive testing has been done and great care taken to develop and manufacture the Shark
Shield™ range of products, it is impossible to guarantee that all sharks will be deterred under all
circumstances. With or without the protection of a Shark Shield™ all sharks should be treated with
respect and caution. Water based activity in the presence of sharks is inherently dangerous and
is not recommended. Any human activity in the water near sharks must always be considered as
possessing a considerable degree of risk.
HEALTH AND SAFETY – Anyone with any health condition which could increase their sensitivity to
the field generated by a Shark Shield™ should not use the device. Such conditions include, heart
disease, a history of heart problems, peripheral vascular disease, stroke, a history of fainting or
epilepsy, lung disease or if the user is taking any prescription drugs that are administered for these
conditions. People who have pacemakers or who are or might be pregnant must not use the device
and should avoid swimming close to anyone using a device. Responsible supervision of children
is required at all times to ensure the Shark Shield™ is used correctly and in accordance with the
manufacturer’s guidelines.
Some bottom dwelling sharks such as the Wobbygong, Carpet and Port Jackson do not have active
Ampullae of Lorenzini and thus are not reacting to the ‘wave form’ emitted from Shark Shield™. The
larger and more aggressive species such as Great White, Bull, Tiger, Oceanic White Tip etc. are all
affected. Smaller sharks will come in closer to the Shark Shield™ before being deterred.

FREEDOM 7 FOR KAYAKING
The Freedom 7 unit can be deployed through a scupper (drain) hole in kayaks with the power
module lying in the floor of the craft, not on the leg (for the protective field to be manufactured in
the water, only the two electrodes must be submerged), or if the craft has no scuppers then the unit
can be tethered over the side just behind the paddler out of the way of the backstroke but with the
power module just above the water to reduce drag/resistance. Ensure both electrodes in the antenna
are submerged in the water.
FREEDOM 7 FOR BOATING
The Freedom 7 Shark Shields™ conventional use is for swimming, snorkeling, spear fishing, scuba
diving and kayaking. However, it can also be deployed aft from a boat by a tether approximately
three meters long and hanging under a polystyrene buoy by another one meter tether attached to
the power module. The deployment of one or two Freedom 7 Shark Shields™ creates a ‘Safe Zone’
at the rear of the boat to allow swimming off the duckboard. Freedom 7 Shark Shields™ can also be
used to protect your prize catch by deploying it over the transom. Most fish are taken on or near the
surface of the water close to the boat. The Freedom 7 can also be used as per its original design as a
personal unit attached to the users lower leg. This allows excursions away from the boat. The multi
purpose uses for this product makes for an ideal inclusion in your boats accessories safety pack.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE
This product gives proven effective protection against shark attacks when the surfer is stationary,
waiting for a wave or for any other reason. In these cases the Shark Shield™ antenna hangs directly
down into the water, creating a powerful pulsating field which, under all normal circumstances,
prevents sharks from gaining access to the surfer. This includes the largest and most
dangerous sharks.
8
Please note that this protection may not apply when the board is moving fast e.g. when paddling or
riding a wave. In these cases, the antenna and the protective field may drag behind the board on the
surface resulting in either or both electrodes in the antenna not being submerged.
For information about Shark Shield™ and for reports by grateful users on how this technology has
saved their lives, please visit: www.sharkshield.com
PREPARING THE BOARD
•
Before attaching the mounting plate to the board, it is absolutely necessary to thoroughly clean
the area to be used. If the surface is not prepared correctly the mounting plate will not bond to
the board surface.
•
Scrape any visible wax off the area where the unit is to be mounted
•
Use a commercial surf wax cleaner to remove any wax film remaining on the board
•
Place two teaspoons of detergent in a cup of warm water and stir well
•
Rub the area with a glass safe scourer using the detergent mix and dry with a clean cloth
•
Place the mounting plate on the board such that the cover plate is positioned where the kicker
or heel wedge of a deck grip is usually located.
•
Mark around the mounting plate with a felt tip pen.
Wipe inside the marked area with the alcohol swab provided and allow to dry.
(Note: The best possible surface preparation will be achieved using M.E.K. which is available from
fibreglass or plastic suppliers. Ensure you follow the safety guidelines provided for the use of M.E.K.)
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Remove adhesive backing from mounting plate – do not touch surface.
Locate mounting plate in marked area and press firmly into place.
Place a conforming weight (such as a shopping bag full of sand) onto the mounting plate
Soft rubber jawed clamps can also be used to apply pressure to the mounting plate.
Allow 48 hours before removing weight and/or clamps.
Use the alcohol wipe to clean the front surface of the cover plate and allow to dry
Attach grip pad to cover plate. Ensure the hole in the Grip is located over the allen key opening
on the screw of the cover plate.
FITTING MOUNTING PLATE
The Shark Shield™ Surf unit is designed to mount on your board deck at the tail. If you already have a
full deck grip it will require removal of the kicker section of the deck grip; the Shark Shield™ unit and
mounting plate replaces the kicker.
Remove Shark Shield™ Surf unit from the mounting plate by removing the cover plate using the
allen key provided. (Please note position and fitment of spectra rope protruding from the Flexi-Link)
DO NOT REMOVE ADHESIVE BACKING AT THIS POINT
FITTING SHARK SHIELD UNIT AND LEG ROPE
After allowing the required 48 hours curing:
•
Remove weights and clamps.
•
Attach the Shark Shield™ unit by sliding the tabs of the red Flexi-Link into the slots of the
mounting plate. Ensure the tabs are correctly located.
•
Replace cover plate using the allen key (FCS key).
•
Attach leg rope to normal plug underneath the unit. (The design of the Shark Shield™ allows
the tabs to flex in an upwards motion exposing your leg rope plug.
**Please Note: The extra piece of spectra rope is not required, unless you choose to attach the leg
rope the alternative way as discussed below.
If you do not wish to attach the leg rope to the usual plug underneath the unit you can:
•
Remove weights and clamps.
•
Attach the Shark Shield™ unit by sliding the tabs of the red Flexi-Link into the slots of the
mounting plate. Ensure the tabs are correctly located.
•
Prior to replacing cover plate, position the rope protruding from the Flexi-Link into the holding
tab and around the cover plate retaining point. This will ensure that the unit will not be lost
should the mounting plate become detached as it will be attached to your leg rope.
•
Replace cover plate using the allen key (FCS key).
•
Attach leg rope to the spectra rope attached to the pin on the top of the mounting plate as per
the diagram below.
Please Note: The Surf & Freedom 7 units are not interchangeable. The Surf unit can not be
deployed off the leg & the Freedom 7 unit can not adapt to the mounting plate of the Surf unit.

SCUBA 7
HANDY HINTS AND INFORMATION
Please note, the Freedom 7 is the most common Shark Shield™ unit for Scuba Diving. The Scuba 7
unit is primarily used by scientific divers working in shallow inter-tidal zones with considerable
water movement.
In certain situations the user may make contact with one or both of the electrodes in the antenna
which will result in a “shock” to the user. The human reaction to this shock varies between individuals.
We have many scuba divers who occasionally grab the electrode to test if the unit is working rather
than check the LED green solid light is on. Any new piece of equipment takes a little adjustment time
and the common feedback we receive is that “you just forget it is there”.

Universal Plug Pack
The perception that the antenna may cause resistance/drag is not justified in reality. Some divers
“contain” the lateral movement of the antenna by drilling a hole on the outside edge of their fin and
threading a cable tie (zip tie) through the fin and making a loop a little larger than the antenna to
allow for slip and dressing. This keeps the antenna behind the diver and prevents it coming across to
the other leg.
All components must be installed and used in accordance with these instructions if the product is to
function correctly.
When freediving: Glide forward, up current when reaching the bottom to prevent the antenna
falling over you.
To minimize ‘human impact’ from the Shark Shield™ Scuba 7 pulse the unit should always be worn
with a full length wet suit in a good state of repair.
There are some circumstances particularly in shallow intertidal zones where the trailing antenna
may continually wash around and contact the diver or occasionally get caught in coral/rocks. This
can occur with scientific divers who have developed methods of adding two small bullet floats to
the antenna.
ANKLE ELECTRODE FITTING
The Scuba 7 unit Ankle Electrode should be worn facing forward, resulting in it resting on the top of
the fin. This electrode can be secured to the top of the fin by drilling a small hole and inserting a
cable tie.
FITTING THE UNIT
The Scuba 7 unit can be worn on the thigh, utilizing the thigh strap, placed in a BCD pocket, attached
to a D-ring on the BCD or positioned on a front BCD strap.
PAD ELECTRODE FITTING
The Scuba 7 Pad Electrode is to be positioned on the rear of the scuba cylinder. This is held in place
by a quick release fastening device – as per diagrams below.

If the antenna comes in contact with the bottom the waveform is still propagated into the water.
*If either electrode in the antenna is not fully submerged, the green LED will continue to blink
(in standby mode) and not turn to solid green (working mode). The two electrodes at either
end of the antenna are the stainless steel shiny pieces.
If the switch is too difficult to rotate on/off, it can be loosened a little by backing off the philips head
that retains it. Conversely pressure can be increased.
Some customers have a concern that the unique waveform may at a distance attract sharks. This
certainly is not the case and for a number of reasons, including the fact that the protective waveform
is not the same as that emitted from prey. A more detailed answer to this question is available on
our web-site (www.sharkshield.com) and further information on the technology and product is
available in the FAQ (frequently asked questions) section.
The question of ‘Will a Shark Shield™ deter a large Great White shark at full charge?’ is often asked.
A majority of our testing is conducted on large Great Whites in artificial situations using chum and
bait in order to create the worst possible environment. In over ten years of use and testing we have
never had a shark take a Shark Shield™ while the unit has been switched on.
We gain a lot of information from customer feedback and welcome your input. Any information that
you believe may help us or other users is greatly appreciated.
Thank you for purchasing Shark Shield™, it will change the way you work and play in the sea.

SURF UNIT MOUNTING PLATE
No. SU 1400
An additional mounting plate allows you to move your Shark Shield™
Surf unit from one board to another. The mounting plate is attached
using the self adhesive, much like normal deck grip.
Company policy is to recommend the use of Shark Shield™ against sharks only in their investigative
mode if possible. Nevertheless, we have a number of examples where Shark Shield™ has stopped
large sharks in full attack mode. The most spectacular was a diver off Perth who was the subject of a
savage attack by a large Great White. He was in the shark’s mouth with his blood in the water, when
his dive buddy, who was wearing a Shark Shield™, swam to him and the shark immediately fled
the area. The following day, Shark Shield presented the ‘victim’ with a Shark Shield™ on National
Television. He held it up to the Camera and said ‘This is a Shark Shield, it saved my life, I will never go
into the water again without one.’
Many government departments and professionals also use Shark Shield™ as a mandatory use policy.

‘I can say without any doubt that Shark Shield™ works as advertised. I recently had two separate
encounters with Great White sharks and each time the unit repelled the shark at 4 to 5 meters.’
(Greg Pickering, South Australia)
‘Temptation Sailing have been operating daily Dolphin swim tours out from Glenelg, South Australia,
now for 7 years. We trail two mermaid lines from the Stern of the vessel, five metres apart which
the swimmers hold onto. In the centre of these lines we run the three Shark Shields at two metre
intervals. We would never operate a Dolphin swim without these devices.’
(Stephen Waites, South Australia)
The Shark Shield offers me an element of safety and peace of mind without which I would be unable
to pursue my chosen profession with the same enthusiasm.
(Peter Clarkson, Western Australia)
‘As I am often diving in remote parts of the world, I am grateful for, and enthusiastically support,
products such as the Shark Shield™ that are so well designed and effective - especially for freedivers
who are trying to minimize bulk and stay streamlined.’
(Bob Hurwitz, California, USA)
‘I was freediving a wreck and had speared a wahoo. After its second run I began to pull my line in and
noticed the fish was being eaten by a large barracuda. I was disappointed needless to say, but what
happened next was amazing. Two of my dive buddies were nearby and we saw a large bull shark
coming straight up off the bottom at top speed toward the speared remains of the Wahoo. When
the bull got in range of the Shark Shield™ he immediately stopped, almost as if he hit a wall, and
returned to the bottom as fast as he had come up. Awesome! If the Shark Shield™ stopped a charging
bull shark on its way to a ‘’fish on a stick’’ then this product really works well.’
(Pat Johnson, Virginia, USA)
‘It gave me more confidence in the water and enabled me to relax.’
‘After only three months with Shark Shield™ I am reluctant to dive without it.’
‘Weight and resistance is only perception. You don’t even know it’s there.’
