Summer 2016 | Issue 4 HOME ON THE RANGE News from The First Tee of Greater New Orleans OUR WEEK AT The Zurich Classic Thanks to our friends at the Fore!Kids Foundation, our participants had a fun week filled with once-in-a-lifetime opportunities at this year’s Zurich Classic! The week started off on Monday at the Morgan Stanley Executive Women’s Day where three high-school aged First Tee participants were selected to attend. The day of female empowerment and inspiration through networking was a day that The First Tee participants will not soon forget! On Tuesday, April 26th, 75 youth and teens participated in the Children’s Hospital Junior Golf Clinic, which featured LPGA Superstar Lexi Thompson, former LSU Tiger and current PGA Tour professional Andrew Loupe, and current LSU Tiger golfer, Brandon Pierce. During Wednesday’s Pro Am tournament, participants had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to caddy for some of the PGA TOUR’s brightest starts, including Jason Day, Rickie Fowler, Smylie Kaufman and more. Three First Tee SUMMER 2016 >> Issue 4 >> TheFirstTeeNola.org participants, Carlo Carino, Angelica Harris and Caitlyn Bernard, were paired with PGA TOUR professional Will Wilcox during the Pro-Am. The team shot an impressive -5 through nine holes. QUICK HITS ZURICH CLASSIC, CONTINUED. LIFE SKILLS EXPERIENCE During the experience, the Junior Course Reporters gained insight into what it’s like to cover a professional golf event and posted entries to their own blog, housed on PGA TOUR social media pages. Students received media training from Sportscaster Win McMurry and had the opportunity to interact with golf media, PGA TOUR executives, and participate in Q&A sessions with PGA TOUR players. SUMMER CAMPS We have already had five successful weeks of summer camps at Timberlane and Bayou Barriere! We’re ready to wrap up our last week at Bayou Barriere on July 18-July 22.Stay tuned for information about winter camps in December and January. NATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES Congratulations to Karrington Knight, Taylor Collins, Carlo Carino, Angelica Harris and Julia Simon for being selected to attended national opportunities hosted by The First Tee Home Office this summer. On Thursday, April 28th through Sunday, May 1st three First Tee youth participated in the Junior Course Reporter Program. In conjunction with the PGA TOUR and Fore!Kids Foundation, participants of The First Tee covered the golf tournament from their unique perspective. Despite a rainy weekend, our school partners, KIPP Central City and Arise Academy, were able to come out to TPC Louisiana for an exciting field trip to the Zurich Classic! Students were given a tour of the facilities and participated in games in The First Tee SNAG Tent. The Aspen Institute PROJECT PLAY SUMMIT TARGET OUTREACH On May 21st, 10 females from Raintree came out to Bartholomew for a Life Skills clinic. We also were able to meet over 500 local youth at UNO’s Camp Day on June 17th. On May 17th, Executive Director Chip Patterson and participant Carlo Carino attended The Aspen Institute’s Project Play Summit in Washington D.C. Both Chip and Carlo spoke on panels at the 2016 Project Play Summit , where 450 leaders gathered to measure progress, share learnings and discover new opportunities to build healthy communities through sport. DRIVE, CHIP & PUTT 29 participants attended the local Drive, Chip and Putt qualifier at Diamondhead Country Club on July 9. Congratulations to the seven participants who advanced to the subregional which will be held on August 9th at TPC Louisiana. COACH TRAINING Coaches Kevin Avery and Jason Johnston attended Level 1 training in Richmond, VA from April 20-23. The First Tee of Richmond hosted the training. We look forward to sending additional coaches to Level I, II and III trainings this fall. The featured session was with first lady Michelle Obama, her brother Craig Robinson and his ESPN colleague, moderator Michael Wilbon, co-host of Pardon the Interruption. On May 18th, Chip and Carlo headed to Capitol Hill for the 9th annual “National Golf Day”. WE ARE GOLF, a coalition of golf’s leading organizations, met with members of Congress, the Executive Branch, and federal agencies to discuss the game’s $70 billion economic and $4 billion charitable impact, as well as the many environmental and fitness benefits. Chip and Carlo attended The First Tee Congressional Breakfast, where they advocated on behalf of The First Tee alongside The First Tee CEO, Joe Louis Barrow Jr. and PGA Tour Commissioner, Tim Finchem. We are so proud to announce that all four will be attending college in the fall. More impressivley, all four have received scholarships. We will miss all of our seniors, but wish them nothing but the best. Congratulations! The 11th Annual First Tee Golf Classic sponsored by Walmart will be held on Monday, September 19th at TPC Louisiana. The event will feature a 2:00 p.m. shotgun start followed by dinner and a reception ceremony in the clubhouse. Teams will receive on-course lunch catered by some of New Orelans best restaurants, including Acme Oyster House, Drago’s and more! Sponsorships start at $250.
