Finding the FUNgi in Caldera Springs DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THE SHAGGY MANE? If you’ve been out on walks and hikes this fall, you’ve probably noticed a lot of different mushrooms growing. Caldera Springs and the Sunriver area is covered in mushrooms. It’s been particularly noticeable on the Caldera Springs berm off of South Century Drive. The overabundance of mushrooms can be attributed to an unusual combination of rain and warm temperature this fall. We’ve spotted many varieties of mushrooms in Caldera Springs, but by far the most prolific is the Shaggy Mane (Coprinus Comatus). Also known as Lawyers Wig, this mushroom variety is edible, although it has a very short usability window. According to mushroom-collecting.com, the mushrooms are suitable with eggs, cheese, white sauces, mild vegetables, chicken and fish. They resemble Coprinus atramentarius, which can cause adverse reactions when consumed with alcohol, so it’s best to use caution when using Shaggy Mane in edible dishes. You don’t want to mix these two up. The Shaggy Mane becomes inky quite quickly through it’s growth stage, and as a result, it can also be used to dye fiber such as wool and paper. More interesting facts about the Shaggy Mane and other mushroom varieties can be found at mushroom-appreciation. com and mushroom-collecting.com. Along with the beauty of our winter wonderland comes the task of snow removal. Below you will find a few guidelines and tips for snow removal in Caldera Springs: The Owners Association has a contract with a private company to remove snow on the roadways and in community-owned parking lots. This company will start snow removal once we have an accumulation of three inches or more. Owners are responsible for snow removal at their residence. Please remember: • All snow must remain on your property. • Snow from your property should not be pushed onto common areas or the neighboring property. • Snow should not be pushed into the street for other motorists to navigate through or snowplows to contend with. • Be sure to keep access to your swales clear of snow. Water needs a way to travel to your swales when the snow melts. • Using a snow blower, versus a snow plow, is a great way to move snow out of your drive and walkways without creating a snow dam. Please contact Joanna Johns at Joanna@Bendnet.com or (541) 410-4177 with any snow removal questions. Thank you for helping make Caldera Springs a safe and beautiful winter wonderland.
