Welcome From The Editor...
Welcome, to the first issue of the Sabden Link Magazine which we hope you’ll
find interesting and helpful. We hope that this will become a useful booklet full of
information about what’s happening in the village, including a new range of events at
The Link, the new facility next to St Nicholas’ Church Hall. As this is the first issue, we
want to hear from you - tell us what else you’d like to see in here – news, features, your
events, a slot from your club or organisation.
Could I take this opportunity to thank all of those people and organisations who have
supported us with this new venture, and Christina Aro our resident photographer!
In the mean time, we hope you enjoy what we hope will be the first
of many Sabden Link Magazines!

This is our first
edition, so we’d
like to make this a useful magazine, so
please get in touch, and let us know what
you’d like to see in here.
About 18 months ago, we had the idea of
supporting our local businesses and our
community via a refurbished village facility.
Page 2 - Sabden Link Magazine
Are you looking to hold a special event in
your area, or set up a local community group?
Struggling to find funds? Why not try our
ABC fund?
The ABC Fund provides extra money for community events. It can provide up to
£300 a time for activities that will benefit the local community.
This facility has been named The Sabden
Link – linking up the village businesses and
the people of Sabden so that we can all
help and support each other in the difficult
economic times.
In June 2012, Central Briercliffe Road Action Group held a street party for all
residents in the area to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. They received
£300 from the ABC Fund to purchase food and decorations.
We hope to publish this magazine 3 or
4 times a year, and we will also make it
available via our web site which is currently
under construction.
Your Comments Please...
We want to make this venture a success.
We can only do that by involving people
in the village, so please let us know what
you would like to see at The Link.

Happy Birthday Brookside Garage
Some may remember the harsh winter of 1982.
As the business began to thrive, space became ght, and In
Frank Windsor remembers it clearly, as he
slipped and broke his ankle in the bad snow and
ice. He struggled to get to work in Padiham and
was threatened with losing his job as a result. As
he sat at home, he decided that he’d like to start
his own business, and something he had a real
passion for – fixing cars.
1992 the new garage was built around the old wooden one
so that work could connue! The garage now boasts two
service bays, and in 2010 they were accredited as an MOT
Tesng Centre.
By Bull Bridge, there was a large wooden garage, and home to a Rolls Royce which
belonged to one of the mill owners. Half of the garage lay empty, and Frank saw an
opportunity to set up as a mechanic in the space available. Hello, Brookside Garage!
So,
as
the
30th
approaches, what
Brookside Garage?
Of course, Sco is sll a familiar face at
Brookside, and in 2010 Jonathan Heap
joined the business.
for
“We’ll be offering some great winter deals to our customers”,
said Sco, “and of course we’ll connue to look aer our customers by offering the best possible service”.
In 1990, Frank received an offer to buy the garage outright, as the previous owners moved
to pastures new. Business started to build, and the garage became popular with the
villagers, so Frank needed help. His son Sco had just done a year at art college, but
decided that an opportunity to work in the family business was too good to miss, and in
1987 he joined the company, two years later, son Dean also joined the business, where he
stayed unl 2000.

All our meals are cooked to order from fresh so we make every effort to cater for everyone’s needs. The Wellsprings, Clitheroe Road, Sabden BB7 9HN 01200 427722 Mmm, deli-cious!
For years Sabden was famous for the Treacle Mines, but is it now on the verge of becoming better
known as the home of the Malkin Pie?
When Keith and Christine Turner opened San-witches in 2011, they knew they’d have to come up
with something special to attract new customers.
After much research and tasting, Christine created the recipe for what is now becoming the quite
famous ‘Malkin Pie’. So named after the feast of Malkin Tower; a Good Friday meal enjoyed by the
witches of Malkin; the creation of which also marks the 400 th anniversary of the Pendle Witch Trials,
of 1612.
Careful research led to the discovery that the witches’ feast almost certainly consisted of lamb, beef,
bacon and wicca dumplings (suet dumplings flavoured with herbs). The pie recipe, which emerged
from these ingredients, has been the cause of an overwhelming flood of people visiting the shop to try
it for themselves.
But San-witches isn’t just about Malkin Pie; it’s about delicious, high
quality, locally produced fresh foods, right here in the heart of the
village.
The deli has a wonderful selection of fresh ready meals, hot and cold
take away foods, freshly baked breads, and fresh vegetables, not to
mention the wonderful hot and cold buffets for your event or special
occasion. You can even grab a coffee and watch the world go by at
the little coffee bar in the shop.

We would like to say a special thanks to our Andrew, Rachel and grandchildren; Maxine, Hazel and Heather at the shop;
Jane, Susan and Monica, Delicious from Home; plus David Fishwick and Channel 4 for all contributing to a very eventful 2012.
Well, Buckle my Shoe!
It was best foot forward this year for Wesley Street resident Helen Durrant, when
she joined forces with her friend to open a children’s shoe shop.
After working for successful businesswoman Denise Heap for a number of years,
Helen was delighted when she was asked to join forces with her and focus on
designer children’s footwear.
Already owner of the well-established Hansel and Gretel children’s wear shop in
Whalley, Denise wanted to branch out into footwear and thought Helen would be
the ideal partner.
Buckle My Shoe has now been open for six months and has been welcomed with
open arms by Ribble Valley parents. Situated on Accrington Road, in Whalley, the
shop has a modern feel with plenty of space, and, more importantly, plenty of toys
for little ones to play with!
The team consists of owners Denise and Helen, Inga Gordon and Saturday girl
Jasmine Armitage, also a Sabdener.
They offer a professional measure and fit service and stock shoes from size20 (UK 4)
to a Junior size 40 (UK 6).
Popular brands they stock include Lelli Kelly, Converse, UGG and fabulously fun
Hatley Wellies… with matching raincoats and umbrellas.
Designs by children’s footwear award winner Garvalin sit alongside styles from the
beautiful Agatha Ruiz De La Prada and Primigi. For the boys, as well as Converse
they stock Geox, a popular brand from Italy which has a breathable sole.
There is an extensive range of school shoes from Geox, Lelli Kelly, Primigi, Petasil
and Toughees.
Helen and her husband Damian moved to the village five years ago with son Freddie,
now 6. Since then Henry, aged, 3, has arrived and the family are very settled in the
village. Both children are at Sabden Primary and Helen is also chairman of the
Parent, Teachers and Friends Association at the school. Whichever way you look at
it, the Durrant family are here to stay!
