FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DERIVAN:
This Saturday at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Cardinal Dolan will ordain ten men to serve as priests of the Archdiocese. One of them is !
Deacon Hartley Bancroft who has assisted us on weekends throughout the past year. The Cardinal will do what bishops have done
from the time of the apostles. He will place hands on the heads of those men, calling upon the grace of the Holy Spirit, making them
priests. In the quiet of that moment these men will receive the Sacrament of Holy Orders, the Priesthood. When we think of it, all the
sacraments are quiet things. Something happens, quietly, something done by God Himself. Water is poured on a baby’s head. The
baby is not changed on the outside, but inside he or she is marked forever as a child of God. The priest raises his hand in absolution in
the Sacrament of Penance and quietly God’s grace takes sins away. In this Mass and in every Mass, bread and wine are blessed and the
most wonderful thing happens, quietly, unobtrusively bread and wine are changed into the living Body and Blood of Jesus Himself.!
And so too in the Sacrament of Holy Orders soon to be received by Deacon Hartley and the others, quietly the Cardinal’s hands
changed them. They will not look different on the outside. They are still their parents’ sons. But they will be changed, to be priests
forever.!
Today we celebrate the feast of the Holy Trinity, our belief in Father, Son and Holy Spirit, three Persons in One God. Our new
priests will celebrate their First Masses on this feast of the Holy Trinity. How difficult it is for us to even begin to understand the Holy
Trinity! Long ago, the great St. Augustine, one of the greatest minds that ever served the Church, wrote a beautiful book on the Holy !
Trinity. After he did so, he walked on a beach. He saw a little boy digging in the sand. The boy made a hole in the sand, then went to
the ocean, filled the cup with water, and poured it into the hole. Back and forth, he did this. Augustine asked the boy what he was !
doing. And the boy, who was really an angel, said, “I am moving the ocean into the hole.” Augustine told the boy that was !
impossible. He could never move the ocean into the hole. And the angel said, “Augustine, I will sooner move the ocean into the hole
than you will be able to explain the Holy Trinity.” And Augustine learned his lesson. Our minds are like the little hole in the sand and
the mystery of God is like the vast ocean. We can never fully understand the mystery of the Holy Trinity.!
No, we can never understand the Trinity. But we can understand the work of the Trinity. And we can especially appreciate the !
Trinity’s work for our new priests. These men are to be blessed by God the Father. Like all of us, they are creations of the Father, !
created in His image, loved by Him for all eternity. These men are blessed by God the Son who died for them and for us and who will
call them, even as He called the apostles to come and follow Him. And these men will be blessed by the Holy Spirit. They will !
received the Holy Spirit when the Cardinal places hands silently on their heads and then for the rest of their lives they will be guided by
the same Holy Spirit to serve the people of God. Deaconsoon to be Father Hartley and the others are truly people blessed by the !
Holy Trinity.!
And so too are we. We may never understand the mystery of the Trinity, but we do understand how the Three Persons in One God
touch our lives. We too are blessed by God the Father, made by Him, loved by Him. We too are blessed by God’s Son who died for
our salvation and who calls us to follow Him too. And we too are blessed by the Holy Spirit who continues to give us his seven gifts to
guide us on our way to eternal live. We are all blessed by the Holy Trinity, even as these new priests are and always will be.!
May the Holy Trinity guide our new priests. May they be servants of the Trinity and so may we be. May we carry with us our firm
belief in Father, Son and Holy Spirit, always blessing us, always loving us. “Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy
Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, without end Amen.”!

DEACON HARTLEY’S PRIESTLY ORDINATION
During this past year we have been blessed to have Deacon Hartley Bancroft with us on the weekends. We are honored that he was
assigned to our parish by Cardinal Dolan to assist us in preaching at Sunday Mass, baptizing, administering Holy Communion, and!
helping our CCD children on Sunday mornings. It has been a pleasure to have him with us in these final months of preparation for his
priestly ordination.!
Deacon Hartley will be ordained as a priest this Saturday, May 28th at 9:00AM at St. Patrick’s Cathedral by Cardinal Dolan. We !
rejoice with him and with his parents and sisters and we assure him of our continued prayers as he begins his priestly service of the !
people of the Archdiocese of New York.!
The soontobe Father Bancroft will celebrate his First Mass on Sunday, May 29th at his home parish, St. Mary’s in !
Washingtonville, NY.!
!
Then on Sunday, June 5th he will return to St. Theresa’s to offer the 10:30AM Mass. We invite all to join in this happy occasion at the
Mass and at the gathering in our auditorium immediately after the Mass.!

PRAYER TO OUR BLESSED MOTHER WRITTEN BY POPE FRANCIS
Mary, Virgin and Mother, you who, moved by the Holy Spirit, welcomed the word of life in the depths of your humble faith as you
gave yourself completely to the Eternal One, help us to say our own “yes” to the urgent call, as pressing as ever, to proclaim the good
news of Jesus.!
Filled with Christ’s presence, you brought joy to John the Baptist, making him exult in the womb of his mother. Brimming over
with joy, you sang of the great things done by God. Standing at the foot of the cross with unyielding faith, you received the joyful
comfort of the resurrection, and joined the disciples in awaiting the Spirit so that the evangelizing Church might be born.!
Obtain for us now a new ardour born of the resurrection, that we may bring to all the Gospel of life which triumphs over death.!
Give us a holy courage to seek new paths, that the gift of unfading beauty may reach every man and woman.!
Virgin of listening and contemplation, Mother of love, Bride of the eternal wedding feast, pray for the Church, whose pure icon you
are, that she may never be closed in on herself or lose her passion for establishing God’s kingdom.!
Star of the new evangelization, help us to bear radiant witness to communion, service, ardent and generous faith, justice and love of
the poor, that the joy of the Gospel may reach to the ends of the earth, illuminating even the fringes of our world.!
Mother of the living Gospel, wellspring of happiness for God’s little ones, Pray for us, Amen. Alleluia!

ST. GREGORY VII
!
(1020!1085)
!
!
!
The tenth century and the first half of the eleventh were dark
days for the Church, partly because the papacy was the pawn of
various Roman families. In 1049, things began to change when
Pope Leo IX, a reformer, was elected. He brought a young
monk named Hildebrand to Rome as his counselor and special
representative on important missions. He was to become !
Gregory VII.!
Three evils plagued the Church then: simony (the buying and
selling of sacred offices and things), the unlawful marriage of the
clergy and lay investiture (kings and nobles controlling the !
appointment of Church officials). To all of these Hildebrand !
directed his reformer’s attention, first as counselor to the popes
and later (10731085) as pope himself.!
Gregory’s fiercely resisted any attack on the liberty of the
Church. For this he suffered and finally died in exile. He said,
“I have loved justice and hated iniquity; therefore I die in !
exile.” Thirty years later the Church finally won its struggle
against lay investiture.!
The Gregorian Reform, a milestone in the history of Christ’s
Church, was named after this man who tried to extricate the !
papacy and the whole Church from undue control by civil !
rulers. Against an unhealthy Church nationalism in some areas,
Gregory reasserted the unity of the whole Church based on
Christ and expressed in the bishop of Rome, the successor of !
St. Peter.!

OUR LADY OF KIBEHO (RWANDA, AFRICA
MAY, THE MONTH OF MARY:
During the month of May, we are presenting in our bulletin !
information about some of the apparitions of Our Blessed !
Mother Mary and other devotions to her. May we grow in our
love for Mary who always brings us closer to Jesus her Son.!
!
Today we consider: OUR LADY OF KIBEHO
( Rwanda, Africa)
Thirteen years before the 1994 genocide that swept across !
Rwanda and left more than a million people dead, the Virgin
Mary and Jesus Christ appeared to eight young people in the !
remote village of Kibeho. !
Through these visionaries, Mary and Jesus warned of the !
looming holocaust, which (they assured) could be averted if
Rwandans opened their hearts to God and embraced His love.!
Mary also sent messages to government and church leaders to
instruct them how to end the ethnic hatred simmering in their
country. She warned them that Rwanda would become a river of
blood and a land of unspeakable carnage if the hatred of the !
people was not quickly quelled by love. Some leaders listened,
but very few believed.!
The prophetic and apocalyptic warnings tragically came true !
during 100 horrifying days of savage bloodletting and mass !
murder. Much like what happened at similar sites such as !
Fatima and Lourdes, the messengers of Kibeho were at first
mocked and disbelieved. But as miracle after miracle occurred in
the tiny village, tens of thousands of Rwandans journeyed to
Kibeho to behold the apparitions. After the genocide, and two
decades of rigorous investigation, Our Lady of Kibeho became
the first and only Vaticanapproved Marian (related to the Virgin
Mary) site in all of Africa. !
But the story still remained largely unknown. Now, however,
Immaculee Ilibagiza, a young woman who survived the savage
massacre, has changed all that. She has made many pilgrimages
to Kibeho, both before and after the holocaust, has personally
witnessed true miracles, and has spoken with a number of the
visionaries themselves. What she has discovered will deeply
touch your heart! Immaculee has written about her experiences,
her devotion to Our Lady of Kibeho and her conviction that the
power of the Rosary helped her to survive in her beautiful book!
simply called The Rosary which is well worth your reading !
particularly during this month of Mary. !
MAY 26TH
ST. PHILIP NERI
(1515!1595)
Philip Neri was a sign of contradiction, combining popularity with piety against the background of a corrupt Rome and a !
disinterested clergy, the whole postRenaissance malaise.!
At an early age, he abandoned the chance to become a businessman, moved to Rome from Florence and devoted his life and !
individuality to God. After three years of philosophy and theology studies, he gave up any thought of ordination. The next 13 years
were spent in a vocation unusual at the timethat of a layperson actively engaged in prayer and the apostolate.!
As the Council of Trent was reforming the Church on a doctrinal level, Philip’s appealing personality was winning him friends from
all levels of society, from beggars to cardinals. He rapidly gathered around himself a group of laypersons won over by his audacious
spirituality. Initially they met as an informal prayer and discussion group, and also served poor people in Rome. At the urging of his
confessor, he was ordained a priest and soon became an outstanding confessor, gifted with the knack of piercing the pretenses and !
illusions of others, though always in a charitable manner and often with a joke. He arranged talks, discussions and prayers for his !
penitents in a room above the church. He sometimes led “excursions” to other churches, often with music and a picnic on the way.
Some of his followers became priests and lived together in community. This was the beginning of the Oratory, the religious institute
he founded. A feature of their life was a daily afternoon service of four informal talks, with vernacular hymns and prayers. !
Giovanni Palestrina was one of Philip’s followers, and composed music for the services.!
The Oratory was finally approved after suffering through a period of accusations of being an assembly of heretics, where laypersons
preached and sang vernacular hymns! (Cardinal Newman founded the first Englishspeaking house of the Oratory.)!
Philip’s advice was sought by many of the prominent figures of his day. He is one of the influential figures of the !
CounterReformation, mainly for converting to personal holiness many of the influential people within the Church itself. His !
characteristic virtues were humility and gaiety. His approach to sanctity was truly catholic, allembracing and accompanied by a good
laugh. Philip always wanted his followers to become not less but more human through their striving for holiness. Philip Neri prayed,
“Let me get through today, and I shall not fear tomorrow.” !
MAY 27TH
ST. AUGUSTINE OF CANTERBURY
(D. 605?)
In the year 596 a small party of some 40 monks set out from Rome to evangelize the AngeloSaxons in England. Leading the group
was Augustine, the prior of their monastery in Rome. Hardly had he and his men reached Gaul (France) when they heard stories of the
ferocity of the AngloSaxons and of the treacherous waters of the English Channel. Augustine returned to Rome and to the pope who
had sent themSt. Gregory the Greatonly to be assured by him that their fears were groundless.!
Augustine again set out and this time the group crossed the English Channel and landed in the territory of Kent, ruled by King !
Ethelbert, a pagan married to a Christian. Ethelbert received them kindly, set up a residence for them in Canterbury and within the
year, on Pentecost Sunday, 597, was himself baptized. After being consecrated a bishop in France, Augustine returned to Canterbury,
where he founded his see. He constructed a church and monastery near where the present cathedral, begun in 1070, now stands. As
the faith spread, additional sees were established at London and Rochester. Work was sometimes slow and Augustine did not always
meet with success. Attempts to reconcile the AngloSaxon Christians with the original Briton Christians (who had been driven into
western England by AngloSaxon invaders) ended in dismal failure. Augustine failed to convince the Britons to give up certain Celtic
customs at variance with Rome and to forget their bitterness, helping him evangelize their AngloSaxon conquerors.!
Laboring patiently, Augustine wisely heeded the missionary principles quite enlightened for the timessuggested by Pope Gregory
the Great: purify rather than destroy pagan temples and customs; let pagan rites and festivals be taken over into Christian feasts; retain
local customs as far as possible. The limited success Augustine achieved in England before his death in 605, a short eight years after
he arrived in England, would eventually bear fruit long after in the conversion of England. Truly Augustine of Canterbury can be
called the “Apostle of England.”!
Augustine of Canterbury comes across today as a very human saint, one who could suffer like many of us from a failure of nerve.
For example, his first venture to England ended in a big Uturn back to Rome. He made mistakes and met failure in his peacemaking
attempts with the Briton Christians. He often wrote to Rome for decisions on matters he could have decided on his own had he been
more selfassured. He even received mild warnings against pride from Pope Gregory, who cautioned him to “fear lest, amidst the
wonders that are done, the weak mind be puffed up by selfesteem.” Augustine’s perseverance amidst obstacles and only partial !
success teaches today’s apostles and pioneers to struggle on despite frustrations and be satisfied with gradual advances.!
In a letter to Augustine, Pope Gregory the Great wrote: “He who would climb to a lofty height must go by steps, not leaps.” !
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY NEWS
