May Newsletter - Thatcham Town Cricket Club
Brownsfield Gazette Volume 1, Issue 3 Newsletter Date—May 2011 Brownsfield - The Home of Cricket BRIGHT START TO NEW SEASON April Headlines • Girls Cricket Competition at Brownsfield • Ali Gets Off to a Flyer • ECB Steps in to Support Club Net Project Welcome to the third new format newsletter slightly later than planned but with much to report on a productive and enjoyable start to the season in all areas. On the field, having completed the double over Cumnor CC in the last pre-season friendly, the Clubs 1st and 2nd XI had successful 25-point victories to kick-off their TVL campaigns and although the 4s missed out there are encouraging signs from the youngsters that they will take the Club forward again in 2011. On the social side, the Royal Wedding Fun Day went off well, with good attendance, lots of fun had by all and an excellent return on the fund raising front. May sees the inaugural Village 8-a-Side competition on the 29th which should be a great day and Friday night Colts practice nights are already in full swing. As ever... lous!!!!! Marvel- ECB STEPS IN TO SUPPORT CLUB NET PROJECT VILLAGE 8-A-SIDE COMPETITOON SUNDAY 29th MAY from 10.30-am BRIGHTWALTON CC Some excellent progress at last! Having missed out on grant aid from both Sport England and Community First, the Club was delighted to receive a call from the ECB to confirm that we would be getting a substantial grant towards the costs of building our new Net Practice Facility. In order to make the funding go around, we have opted to re-locate the facility in the North East corner of Brownsfield and hope to be able to commence work through S&C Slatter towards the start of August! Watch this space..... (MORE) WEDDING BELLS IN THE AIR!!!! BURGHCLERE CC BUCKLEBURY CC CHIEVELEY CC COLD ASH & ASHMORE GREEN CC EAST GARSTON CC SPEEN CC TTCC SUNDAY 2nd XI BBQ BOUNCY CASTLE REAL ALE With West Berkshire’s other glamour couple having tied the knot at the end of April, the Club is delighted to break exclusive news that Chris Rochfort has finally proposed to Jo, taking the opportunity to pop the question whilst on a romantic walk (with Rhys no doubt) on the Ridgeway. Chris has asked the Clubs members to af- ford the couple appropriate levels of privacy should they be seen at Brownfield. They are, after all, just an ordinary couple, trying to live an ordinary life.... He also added that the cause of his back injury and the excitement of the engagement are not linked in anyway! Hopefully, we should see him back behind the stumps soon! Page 2 Volume 1, Issue 3 GIRLS CRICKET TOURNAMENT AT BROWNSFIELD Visitors to Brownsfield on a Wednesday evening will see the emerging talents of the Club’s Girls Section taking shape under the guidance of the Jenkins Boys - Graham and Paul. Having taken recent delivery of £500 of coaching equipment, generously funded through Healthy & Active Parishes, we are now well positioned to support the development of this section over the coming seasons. As part of the process, the Club hosted and took part in a Kwik Cricket-based tournament on Sunday morning, with teams from matches, with our Girls winning against West Ilsley and Falkland to progress to a final play-off against Henley. Despite losing out in the final, this is a great start and the hope is that momentum (and greater numbers) will develop over the coming weeks. Henley, West Ilsley, Falkland and a combined TTCC / Wokingham side taking part in a series of England player Charlotte Edwards will now be visiting the ground for session on Wednesday 1st June!!!!! SAD NEWS…….. The Club has always enjoyed the company of overseas guests and 2011 should have been no different with the arrival of Scott Gibson from New Zealand. As always, the Club tries to get a perspective of both the playing AND social background of our guests, prior to their arrival, in order that we can satisfy ourselves that they will fit into Club life from the outset. Sometimes, you have to hold your hand up though and admit you got it wrong!!! To this end, the Club wants to take this opportunity to use this newsletter to wholeheartedly apologise to its’ Members and friends. WE REALLY DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT THE POOR EXCUSE FOR A PONYTAIL!!!!! HONEST!! MANY THANKS ALL To everyone who has given up time and effort to make the Club come together so well for the start of the season, a big thank you!!! Naming everyone would be difficult but special mention to Frank, Hoggy, Tony, Billy, Andy S and the rest of the team that make the Club tick, seemingly behind the scenes and without fuss. MARVELLOUS!!! A DOG IS FOR LIFE Rhys Rochfort cuts a lone figure as he drinks a pint in solitude, clearly pining for his absent master! “I don’t understand it” Rhys was heard to say “We used to be inseparable and then someone else came between us!” ROYAL WEDDING FUN DAY As ever, we are looking to address matters quickly and without fuss and expect to be able to remove the offending growth, along with the rest of Scott’s hair, on the 8-a-Side Fun Day in August! Footnote: ... We are also investigating rumours of hair straighteners being used in the 1st XI dressing room at the weekend! A BIG THANKS to everyone, especially Charlotte and Gav, for making the Fun Day such a big hit! If they organise another one, don’t miss out on it ! ALI OFF TO A FLYER Having only jetted in two days prior to the first TVL fixture against recently relegated HCPL side Beaconsfield, Ali picked up his excellent First Class form from the Winter in Pakistan to help the 1st XI to a comfortable 66 run victory at Brownsfield on Saturday. Ali carried his bat for an imperious 132 not out as Dan Williams’ side posted a useful 220 for 7 having been put into bat and then snapped up 4 for 63 from his 14 overs. Excellent bowling from Josh O’Flynn (2 for 17) and veteran left arm spinner Chris Bird (3 for 23) helped skittle the visitors for 154 and a much deserved 25-point haul. Neil Rider, of the Club’s equipment and coaching partner, Serious Cricket, pictured with representatives of the Club’s schools cricket Chance to Shine Programme (and Redders Snr, Bishy and Eddie) The Club recently launched our eleven week Summer Terms season of cricket coaching into local schools with the distribution of new Kwik Cricket equipment at their Brownsfield headquarters. Working with Mark Roche and Mark Foster of Berkshire Cricket, the Club entered the Cricket Foundation’s ‘Chance to Shine’ programme in 2009, with a brief to deliver fully funded coaching services to schools who would not otherwise be able to include cricket as part of their PE curriculum. For this reason, through support from West Berkshire Council’s Extended Services team and Kennet School’s Associate Head Paul German, the Club has been able to extend the programme into a total of eight feeder primary schools, as well as increase the number of coaching hours delivered into Kennet. 2011 will see 900 plus primary and secondary school children get their ‘Chance to Shine’ at cricket and has helped establish a close bond between all participating schools and the Club itself, who are gaining additional benefit, both in terms of playing membership increases and access to community and national funding support. This included the recent award of £2.2K funding through the Greenham Common Trust grant scheme, which has enabled the Club to significantly improve the quality of coaching equipment and resources available to support the Schools and Colts Section programmes. The programme works predominantly with Year 5, 6 & 7 age groups and provides a structured approach to cricket coaching and a familiar face to children as they migrate between primary and secondary education.
