Hello Shenandoah Region!
As usual, Art Bragg has done it again! He organized,
planned, and executed a fantastic road trip for the members! We met
at the Rutherford Crossing shopping center on Saturday morning,
boarded a bus and departed for Allentown, PA. Our first stop was at a
very well-presented collection of Hudson and Essex cars dating from
the 20s to the 50s, with a couple of stray marques thrown in. The folks
at the collection provided an excellent lunch for the tour as well.
We left there and proceeded to a collection in a showroom owned by
Nicola Bulgari, of jewelry fame. His collection is housed in a building
which allows him to overlook his cars from his living quarters when he
is in town. All his cars are maintained by his staff and are immediately
driveable when he so desires. We also toured his restoration facility
where his staff of 5 is occupied with several ongoing projects. The
shop is fully equipped and can handle any phase of restoration.
After this tour it was on to our hotel and an excellent dinner at the
Starlite Diner. Sunday morning dawned bright and clear. We reboarded our bus and were taken to the residence of David Bausch, who
has been a fixture in Allentown for over 80 years. David has been a
collector (he says an “accumulator”) for most of those years. His 27room home, where he was born, is without exaggeration, totally filled
with memorabilia, automobilia, antique toys, and as a showpiece, the
logbook from Columbus’ ship, the Nina. He was a most gracious host,
and the word “mindboggling” doesn’t do the collection justice.
Leaving David’s house, we proceeded to the America on Wheels museum, where we had a light lunch at the “Hubcap Cafe”, which featured a restored soda fountain and real ice cream to go with it. After
guided tours of the museum we boarded the bus and headed back to
Winchester. This trip was a fabulous experience, and for those folks
who were unable to go along, there should be a lot of photos available,
judging by the number of cameras that were flashing!! Again, we
cannot thank Art enough for his efforts, he really set the bar high for
the next “tour guide”
Our next major project is the MSV show on 7/21. Bob
Engle has been doing a lot of planning to try to maximize the number
of parking spaces on the property, so we need to maximize our attendance to fill up the spaces he has laid out at the museum. Please do
your best to attend and if each of us brings a car and a friend with a
car, we can accomplish this task!
The board accepted the applications of two new members at
its meeting this month. Thanks to the sponsors of the new members,
and keep up the good work! This is the way our club will continue to
grow and prosper. And with activities such as the above, it will be
more enjoyment each year!!
One of our newer members, Gerry Smith, has put a lot of
effort into a compendium of the car shows in our contiguous area, to

JULY MEETINGS
Our July Membership Meeting will be held on
July 5 at the Car Club shelter, Jim Barnett Park
at 7:00 PM. Our host is Gene Ramey. This will
be a picnic meeting at the Shelter, so remember
to bring a covered dish/dessert to share as well
as your personal tablecloth, drinks, utensils and
condiments as needed. Please also bring a serving utensil for your covered dish or dessert.
The July Board of Directors Meeting will be
held on July 19 at Perkins Restaurant in Winchester.

Bruce Petro, Bob Engle and Bob Grant. Bruce is a friend
that I used to work with at FAA in DC. He and his wife
Karen are frequent attendees at our Apple Blossom show.
Many thanks to Gerry Smith for compiling a comprehensive list of car shows and events in our area. Gerry is a
new member who’s pitched right in. Look for his list on
pg. 4.
Our June 7 Membership meeting was well attended in
spite of the threatening weather. Thunder was rumbling
in the distance and it would have been disastrous if a
blowing storm had struck our open shelter. Fortunately,
it did not.
George Weidig had been in the hospital, but he was out
and attended our meeting in good enough health to eat
heartily and win the 50/50 pot.
The club received a thank you note from the family of
Faye Weidig for our donation to Blue Ridge Hospice in
Faye’s memory.
We also received a thank you from Preston Rose’ Boy
Scout troop for allowing them to sell hot dogs etc. at the
Apple Blossom Car show. Apparently they did quite well
financially.
President Barry Smith noted the spectacular success of
the Apple Blossom Show and thanked Show chair Duane
Catlett for his efforts. Barry suggested we form an Apple
Blossom working group in the next few weeks to assist
Duane in planning for next year’s show. Barry also suggested we expand the Car Corral and Flea Market section
of The Split Rim in future issues with emphasis on the flea
market aspect. Feel free to look for excess car stuff that
you’re not using and get it to me for inclusion in the
newsletter.
Bob Engle reminded everyone that the Poor Man’s Tour
will be held September 22-23, and asked for assistance in
identifying stops, restaurants etc., so if you can help, call
Bob at 540-465-8680.
Planning for our July 21 show at the Museum of the
Shenandoah Valley (MSV) is proceeding. MSV folks are
hoping for 200 cars, but Bob Engle is concerned about
where we would park these cars. Bob’s analysis of the
available field space shows room for approximately 140
cars, but thinks we have a contingency space at MSV that
we can use for overflow. If you have not already registered for the show, find the info and registration form on
pg. 7. Guests at our meeting were George Pumphrey, coworker with Hube Kline at CarQuest, Jim Tillery, friend
of Rich Largent and Ryan Pieper, son of Steve and
Wendy Pieper.
At our June 21 Board meeting, we approved the membership applications of Jim and Tami Tillery sponsored by
Rich Largent and Theodore and Betty Pennington, sponsored by Billy Hudnall so welcome to Shenandoah Region to all.
We had a hugely successful trip to Allentown on June 2324. Thanks To Art Bragg for planning and executing a
super trip. Photos in next month’s issue of The Split Rim.

FUN RUN
The club will hold a Fun Run on Sunday July 15. Meet run
leaders Bob & Josie Engle at 1:00 PM at the Walmart
Shopping Center, rt. 50 west, Winchester. The caravan will
travel first to Bob & Josie’s place to see some of their automotive projects, then to Jim & Ibby’s in Strasburg for an
ice cream social.
GLEN BURNIE SHOW
Don’t forget to mark your calendars for the Museum of the
Shenandoah Valley (MSV) car show on July 21. Coordinated by Shenandoah Region, the show will be a highlight
of the July 21 Glen Burnie Gardens Day at the MSV. On
this special day the MSV’s galleries and gardens will be free
from 10 AM to 4 PM. In addition, the Soul Gravity band
will play hits from the 60’s to today in a free concert on the
lawn in front of the historic Glen Burnie mansion from
noon to 3 PM.
There is no registration fee for the show, however registration is recommended for admission to the show field. and
for prize winning. All vehicles should be 25 years old or
older, i.e. manufactured in 1987 or earlier years. The first
200 registrants will receive a free dash plaque. All show
vehicle drivers will receive a complimentary admission for
two to the MSV complex (good for one year) and may win
one of several fabulous prizes.
Awards will be given for Oldest Car, Museum Director’s
Choice, Best of Show-Antique Car and Best of ShowModified Car, Best Chevy, Best Ford,. Winners in each
category will receive a plaque, a $25 gift certificate to the
MSV store and a free one-year family MSV membership
($75 value).
Shaffers will again be at the show selling their famous pork
barbeque and ice cream. Trailer parking will be available.

For your consideration:
Our shelter in the park needs a little TLC. The edges of the
tin roof need some screws. One or two fellows, an extension
ladder, some galvanized screws maybe 3 inches long and a
screwdriver of your choice. The support poles need repainting or staining, as does the gable end. Who will step
up?
MEMBERS IN THE NEWS
From time-to-time some of our members show up in the
news. This time, it’s Shenandoah Region members Bob &
Jenny Boxley’s turn in the spotlight in a recent Winchester
Star article. Bob and Jenny have been building and collecting model sailboats for years and they now own 170 of
them. (photo at left). Fifty five examples of their collection
will be on display at The Barns of Rose Hill in Berryville
until July 21. Check it out.

be published in the Split Rim monthly. We have tried to limit the area
to easy driving distance, and hopefully this will enable more or our
membership to participate in these events. I feel that if we make the
effort to participate in these events, the members of other clubs in the
area will reciprocate at our events, making a better show series for all
of us!! There are definitely conflicts due to multiple scheduling on the
same days, but if we pick and choose the events to attend, I think we
can “spread the wealth”, improving the system for all of us. Please
have a look at the schedule, and do your best to “show the flag” as
much as you are able.
We do have a couple of small housekeeping items to bring
up, concerning the picnics at the shelter. With the tremendous products of our members’ kitchens, there is always a wonderful selection of
edibles available. It would be good if we could sort of limit our platefilling on the first pass through the line to ensure that the end-of-liners
have a shot at these goodies, too. And remember, seconds are always
de rigeur!! Another small item, please put your names on your dishes
that you bring, as the very patient ladies who have been doing a wonderful job of cleaning up afterwards need to be able to get the cookware back to the rightful owners. Along with this project, if you bring
a disposable container (like pie tins, etc.) please see that yours is deposited in the receptacle. This will make the cleanup a good bit
quicker! Thanks!
Again, please try to enlist your fellow car guys to participate
in the MSV show, and we’ll look forward to seeing each of you at the
next shelter meeting! If you won’t be able to be there, then I wish you
a happy Fourth of July, drive safe and we’ll see you soon!
