Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 BELROSE RUGBY LEAGUE 2009 ANNUAL REPORT belroseeagles.com 1 2 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 PRESIDENT’S REPORT Our 55th season is certainly one in which we can look back on with pride. From Under 6s to A grade we flourished both on and off the field - there was a real sense of excitement and renewed vigour all year. On the playing field we again increased our numbers and featured prominently in the semi finals series in all grades. Off the field we attracted record numbers to our dinner dance, golf day and sportsman’s lunch. To win premierships in the Under 11, Under 13 and A1 grade were the icing on the cake and augurs well for the future years. Our teams are bristling with talented players, conscientious coaches and management, and enthusiastic parents and supporters. What more can a footy club ever need? Thank you to all our volunteers who cooked the snags, set out the field, sold the pies, manned the table and ran the line. Thank you to all coaches, managers and trainers who put so much effort in preparing our teams and instilling the Belrose pride. Thank you to all the parents for supporting your kids and teams all season. The spiraling costs of amateur sport means it is costing the club more than ever to field teams. We work hard with our fundraising but we cannot survive without our generous sponsors. A big thank you to all our major, team and associate sponsors. Remember support your club by supporting your sponsors. Thank you to my fellow board members who worked tirelessly throughout the season. Finally, thank you to all the players who represented the mighty Eagles so well all year. See you back next year—it will be a good one. The numbers in Mini Mod continue to grow while our A Grade enjoyed success to become Premiers under coach & former 300 game player Keiran Dempsey. The performance and numbers in almost every age group improved in 2009. We entered the following teams in Manly Warringah Junior Rugby League competitions. A Grade Premiers A/R Grade Semi Finalists U19 Grade 5th U16 Grade Semi Finalists U14 Grade Finalists U13/2 Grade Premiers U12/2 Grade Grand Finalists U11/2 Grade Maroon Premiers U11/2 Grade White 7th U10/1 Grade 5th U10/2 Grade 8th U9/1 Grade Finalists U9/2 Grade 6th U8/1 Grade 5th U8/2 Grade 6th U7 Maroon Grade Finalists U7 White Grade Grand finalists While there may have been disappointments along the way it is clear that our improvement this year has been because of the contribution of our Coaches & Managers. Not forgetting the support staff and parents who often make daily contributions to add strength to every team. The 2009 Season began in September 2008 with the planning for Touch Football and the formation of a Promotions Committee headed by Matt Brown to gain more players in the off season. After a very successful Touch Football Season the Junior team registrations in February were considerably higher and a number of new Coaches & Managers came forward for the first time. Behind the scenes our Treasurer Paul Hegarty was busy getting sponsorship arrangements in hand while the new A Grade Coach Kieran Dempsey was introducing his players to his goals for 2009. Gear Steward Sue Alder & Registrar John Borger were very busy during March with Matt 6 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 SECRETARY’S REPORT Brown putting on some good trials all our teams were ready to go in April. It was disappointing the many games were lost due the grounds not being available because of wet weather however that didn't stop Vicki Collins getting the best numbers in years at the Annual Dinner Dance in July. For the first time ever Belrose A Grade played a home semi Final at Lionel Watts the highlight the final series which seem to have a Belrose team in almost every age group. the 2009 season has raised the bar and one hopes Belrose can go even further in 2010 but we will not go anywhere unless we have parents and supporters who can contribute in some way. I would like to thank those who have helped in the Canteen this season as I think we have found a system that works. Canteen duties can vary for very rushed to very boring and it is never easy to be rostered on and find there is too much to do or not enough. I think every team did there part some people loved it and wanted more others had had enough after 5 minutes you all made your effort and that’s what counts. Mark Abraham took on the job of groundsman this season from the long serving Life member Geoff Alder. Mark showed he is up to the job and I doubt he will let anyone take the job away from him next season but I am sure he would welcome some help from time to time. I would like to Thank President Craig Badger in the way he handed a number of delicate matters during the during the season . I should also thank all my fellow Directors Paul Hegarty Matt Brown Gary Pickworth & Brad Martin for their contributions to a very workable Board in 2009. It was also a great relief to hand the Canteen keys over to Brad Martin & his wife Sue for the final series. We still need more helpers and if we get a few more new ones like Brad & Sue the sky the limit. On a difficult note I believe the Junior League needs much greater input from Clubs including Belrose next season we may be looking for people from Belrose who can make the Junior league more presentable. From time to time you look back and you see what makes this Club so great and this year the return of Keiran Dempsey to Belrose a 300 game Belrose player who scored 3 tries in a premiers ship winning A grade grand final and has coached all round the world. But for me it was not Kieran's return it was the people who came with him Mark Ballesty Danny Whitehead & Trent Keys. Keiran knew he could rely on these long serving Belrose Boys. Trent Keys goes back to under 7 with Keiran and the late Bob Batty their coach at under 7 told me a few stories about Dempsey & Keys in 1970. They didn’t win nearly forty years ago but the were a part of a great Premiership team in 2009 surely that’s something to be proud of. Now is time to start to think about 2010 Eric Galloway 7 HONOUR ROLL 300 games Andrew Rickard (A Grade) 150 games Andrew Cook (Under 19) Luke Betts (Under 14) 100 games Steve Carew (A Grade) Alex Bate (Under 19) Kael Radford (Under 19) Jeremy Atkins (Under 14) Daniel Paterson (Under 14) Lachlan Brown (Under 10) Manly Warringah NYC Mitchell Jowett Stirrer’s Paddle Glen Eldershaw Rolling Pin Sue Abrahams 8 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 BELROSE RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LTD ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING WEDNESDAY 25th NOVEMBER 2009 BELROSE RLFC CLUBHOUSE BLACKBUTTS RD FRENCHS FOREST 8pm ALL WELCOME Followed by the election of the following committees and positions: Registrar Gear Steward Webmaster Magazine editor Social Committee Grounds Committee Promotions Committee Canteen Committee Sponsorship Committee Junior League delegates 9 BELROSE RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LTD NOMINATION FOR POSITION OF DIRECTOR To be received by:The Secretary PO Box 52 Frenchs Forest 2086 We ____________________________________ hereby nominate _______________________________________ for the position of Director, BELROSE RUGBY LEAGUE FOOTBALL CLUB LTD. Before a large crowd Belrose confirmed their premiership favourites tag by winning the G/F 40-20. As they have done in previous weeks the Magpies started at a hundred miles an hour and before we knew it we were behind on the score board 10-0. The Belrose camp remained calm with the knowledge that we would eventually get some ball and that with the fire power we possess Asquith was going to struggle to stay with us. The possession that began with Asquith having 13 sets to 3 after 20 minutes turned around with Belrose scoring four tries and taking a 24-10 lead into halftime. Tries were scored by James Mortimer (twice), Jimmy Curtis and Steve Carew with Brandon Scott kicking four goals. The coach was very composed at halftime praising the character of the team in not panicking at 0-10 but making sure that the team knew that Asquith would come out strongly to start the second half. The second half started with Belrose crossing to take the score to 30-10 before Asquith regrouped and staged their final assault scoring a couple of tries to get the score to 30-20 as we got a bit untidy with possession. Once again Belrose got their game back in order to score the final two tries and take the score to 40-20. Second half tries were scored by Pete Delaivuna, Jimmy Curtis and Corey Forrest with Brandon kicking two goals. In the end the team preparation from Major Semi to Grand Final was flawless, our routine remained the same as it had been all year and the impact we got from the bench particularly in the G/F was outstanding. All in all this was an outstanding result to a dedicated bunch of players, coaches and support staff. The coach and players would like to thank everyone for the great crowd support we had at all games during the year, the kid’s guard of honour through the semis but especially at the G/F, the ball boys, Ritchie, Ballo, Trent, Sue, Norm, Goso, Matty, Fish, Brain and Dan. Also thanks to the Belrose board especially Badge and Hego, the sponsors especially Lindsey, Grant and Hego, the Ballard Bros for the club house meals, Ross Ballard for the photos, Chris Daley and Phil Jennison for the golf day. Hopefully everyone will be back to defend our title next year. Have a great off season see you at training on Thursday January 21 at 7pm. 15 A GRADE PLAYER PROFILES LEE CAMERON A GRADE 16 GAMES 12 TRIES Moving to fullback in 2009 Lee proved to be a revelation with solid defence & trademark kick returns. After a successful season with the Eagles, Lee is off to Croatia to play rugby. Hope to see him back in 2010. BRANDON SCOTT A GRADE 16 GAMES 10 TRIES 69 GOALS A fine season. The only player to play every minute of every game. Brandon proved to be a real handful for opposition outside backs. Great finisher & prolific goal kicker & our seasons top point scorer. ANDREW NEEDHAM A GRADE 15 GAMES 1 RESERVE 4 TRIES Noddy was as solid as a rock on our left side with no team getting an easy day down his side. Always there to take the pressure off our forwards. Was always keen for a crisis meeting. Great clubman. JAMES MORTIMER A GRADE 7 GAMES 1 RESERVE 10 TRIES A welcome addition mid season. Morts showed his class in the end of season games, scoring & creating tries in the final series. Formed a dangerous combination with The Rookie & a real popular member of the team. A great entertainer off the field. CORY FORREST A GRADE 15 GAMES 1 RESERVE 7 TRIES Without doubt the Rookie of the Year in an outstanding debut season for Belrose. Grew in confidence & stature as each game went by. Was rewarded for outstanding pre-season with a wing spot in game 1 – a position he held for the whole season. Played an absolute stormer in the Grand Final. TIM GEE A GRADE 15 GAMES 8 TRIES Making the 6 his own all year and controlling our very dangerous left side attack. Proved to be a real asset for the team with his enthusiasm & experience. JOE CUDMORE A GRADE 14 GAMES 6 TRIES Is he a half back or a front rower? A ferocious defender and took delight in getting at the big blocker & then having a little chat to them as well. A great addition to our squad. Coming down from Port Macquarie Joey proved to be the player others loved to play with. Also coached the under 16’s to the semi finals this year as well. SHANNON CAMERON A GRADE 16 GAMES 1 TRY After a very testing pre-season Ram-Man came into his own in the big end of season games. The deeper into the competition we got the better he went. Prepared like a race horse& was at his damaging best in the final series. (Continued on page 17) 16 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 A GRADE PLAYER PROFILES (Continued from page 16) DAVE MARANDO A GRADE 16 GAMES 4 TRIES Our USA international didn’t let us down in 2009 with a stellar season. Was dangerous out of the ruck & produced a great kicking game. Enthusiasm & teamwork are great attributes as a rugby league player. Also had the ability to punish teams out of dummy half when he wanted to. A real barnstormer in the Grand Final where he was Man of The Match MAILANGI STYLES A GRADE 16 GAMES 4 TRIES Our very own “Raging Bull”. Natures gentleman off the field & a real crowd favourite with the Belrose crowd especially the kids. On the field he was relentless & delighted in punishing his opposition, but played the game in the right spirit. A fine example for our young ones to learn from. JIM CURTIS A GRADE 16 GAMES 8 TRIES Lead by example & developed into a great leader in all situations. Was an absolute handful every time he ran the ball & came up with some bone- jarring defence to stem opposition raids. Just ask Ballo how he defends. Superb season was rewarded by captaining an A Grade Premiership. STEVE CAREW A GRADE 16 GAMES 7 TRIES Playing in his 100th game for the club in the Grand Final a great achievement and a game that he was outstanding in & his right-side showed all the way. Rock solid defender who stung many throughout the season and ran great lines to cross the stripe 7 times in the season. A Players player with I’m sure a few more seasons to come. PETER DELAIVUNA A GRADE 15 GAMES 8 TRIES The energizer who seemed to be everywhere at times & made an immediate impact in every game he played. Gave away size on most occasions however was never beaten. A real popular member of our team. One of the real characters of our game. Loves the body. MATT FORREST A GRADE 15 GAMES 5 TRIES A proper handful every time he carried the footy for us and a sound defender with a complete all round game. His injury in the semi final was a real body-blow to our team. Am sure Curly will be back for another season in 2010. TOM BITMEAD A GRADE 6 GAMES 9 RESERVE 2 TRIES Junior bull was always there abouts in our mix for the team. Moving between A Grade & Reserve throughout the year. Raw as they get Bull will be an important member in our team for years to come. Certainly a player of the future and a delight to coach. (Continued on page 18) 17 A GRADE PLAYER PROFILES (Continued from page 17) LUKE CAMPBELL AGRADE 6 GAMES 10 RESERVE 4 TRIES Hampered by a knee complaint in pre-season, however did the work to get into the grand final team. An intelligent footballer with the ball in his hands. Can see loads of improvement with a solid pre-season. Not to be distracted from upcoming nuptials. MARTIN COOK A GRADE 14 GAMES RESERVE 1 1 TRY Club stalwart whose game rose to the top on Grand Final Day with great impact from the bench and made a real difference. Cookie has delivered for Belrose on & off the field for many years & one of only 3 players to win 3 A grade flags. A great record for a great player of our club. He says his time is up – time will tell. RICHIE PLUMMER A GRADE 3 GAMES RESERVE 12 6 TRIES 6 GOALS I FIELD GOAL Club favourite, Rich combined coaching & playing as Captain/Coach of reserve grade & passed on his knowledge to our younger players. Called into the A Grade squad for the Grand Final & played more minutes than expected & came up with game sealing play to secure victory. Great to have Richie back in the club & join the select band of those winning 3 A Grade premierships. MITCH McKENZIE 5 GAMES 1 TRY RESERVES A knee injury put a halt to his return season with the roses. Back in 2010. MATT MIRIBETO 3 GAMES RESERVES Was unable to maintain intensity in 2009. However did enough in 3 games to suggest if he switches on in 2010 he will be a handy addition at any level. MITCH JOWETT 2 GAMES 1 TRY RESERVES A guest stint at Belrose coming back from a second knee reconstruction before returning to the Manly 20’s team. A player with plenty of potential. CHRIS STOLK 1 GAME RESERVES Another guest stint from Manly 20’s coming back from injury. A very talented back rower / center. Favourite colour green. WILL BURNS 8 GAMES RESERVE A steady experienced campaigner who captained the Twos before succumbing to a leg injury. All will be revealed in his book “Train Till It Burns” – Just in time for Christmas. (Continued on page 19) 18 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 A GRADE PLAYER PROFILES (Continued from page 18) MICHAEL HIGGINS A GRADE 8 GAMES RESERVE 8 1 TRY Missy is considered one of life’s gentlemen. A great clubman with the best handshake in the junior league. A consistent performer who would go close to the most popular team mate. MATT NUGENT 15 GAMES RESERVES 3 TRIES A young up and coming genuine speed star. With better handling at crucial times would have bagged a heap more tries. Will be a first grade regular in the not too near distant future. JAKE HOGAN 16 GAMES RESERVES Another of the young up & comers. Loves a night out, however if he was really focused on fitness & preparation he would have the potential to be a dangerous front rower. Certainly improved as the season grew. FRANCIS LANGIFISI 6 A GRADE 7 RESERVE 5 TRIES A very powerful footballer in all aspects. Unfortunately was unable to make training as consistently as we had hoped. Succumbed to a myriad of leg, knee & neck injuries late in the season. FRED COLINA 7 GAMES 2 TRIES RESERVES A late starter to the team. A Manny Pacow look a like. Looked a million bucks working the bags at training. May never be seen in Australia again. MATT BEGER 1 GAME A first class pre-season and a better pair of boots, unfortunately his right shoulder couldn’t handle his aggressive nature and was last seen getting work on the deep seated cork. MALU FAKAUHO 1 GAME Very robust promising front rower & had an offer from Japanese rugby that was too good to refuse – Sayonara BLAKE KIRBY 5 GAMES 1 TRY A very enthusiastic individual who we were just unable to keep under our salary cap in 2009. Along with Julian Vertly – Known as The Removalist – is as we speak on their way to Hemel Stags in the U.K. as a package. All the best boys. TRENT REILLY 2 GAMES 3 TRIES The only person in Rugby League that has not learnt to return calls. Was seen training late in the season in Belrose gear at Valleys. The boys went extremely well and I thought the season was going to be very successful but then playing every second week due to Easter, ANZAC day, bye and then the wet weather, we could not get into a rhythm. Having 26 registered players, we had to keep an attendance record to see which players played on Sundays. It only came into effect on the last two games. We had two bus trips this year, one to Berowra and the other to Dural thanks to Mike Bate, which the boys enjoyed and thankfully both trips went off with no drama’s although sorry to say we lost both times. When playing the strong teams we were very unlucky not to take home a win but each time we played the weaker teams we tended to be very complacent which led to defeats, making the coaching staff very frustrated. This also didn’t help with the points at the end of the season putting us out of third position. Finishing in fourth, we played Asquith three times in a row, beating them only once but not winning the right game. Boys of this age can be really difficult, having said that, I enjoyed the year and hope that they did to. One thing I hope the boys take into their future football career is take every game they play as if it’s a Grand Final and don’t let up, especially with the unlimited changes, always go hard on the field. These boys never stop to amaze me the two shyest boys in the team decided to go and get tattoos all over their arms and shoulder, hence unable to train or play for a week, luckily at different times. Once again I couldn’t have gone through the season without Gary Bitmead and Ray Cosh whose presence at training and at the games was appreciated by both me and the boy’s. Gary’s son Andrew only played the last few games and Ray’s son was out for the season from the start but they both supported the team, I would also thank Steve Agar for being our manager. Many thanks to Sue Alder and Norm Nugent for being there early to strap the boy’s. Thanks to the A grade staff for the once a month training runs, it was pleasing to see the A graders pulling the boy’s along when they fell behind with some drills. Thanks to the boys and their parents. Gary Pickworth Coach 26 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 19s PLAYER PROFILES Andrew Bitmead Played 4 Andrew only played the last three games due to a knee operation; thankfully he finished without any problems as he can’t take it easy when on the field. Thanks for being at training all year and for doing the stats each week. Back to his damaging self, living up to his reputation tackling around the legs and moving the ball quickly. One thing is for sure, playing is better than doing player stats, I think Andrew would agree. Blake Agar Played 8 Blake was our most improved player last year and started the year were he left off, using his size with he’s hit ups his ability to stand and off load was excellent, a shame at times the others didn’t follow him as we would have scored far more tries. Well done Blake, see you next year. Christian Bate Played 10 Christian has a great ability to make line breaks, hence being one of our leading try scorers. Christian had a great season moving into the fullback roll he is a true athlete, demonstrating he is one of the fittest in the team, Christian definitely has a good feel for the position and on many occasions went the extra mile playing up in the A2’s and being a stand out. Mathew Woodhouse Played 10 Matt again played centre most of the time and is a second year Under 19. He has developed a Mr Reliable reputation both in attack and defense. A strong player physically, Matt also played up in the A2’s holding his own comfortably at this level. I am sure he will move up next year and be a stand out. Mitchell Gibbons Played 10 Mitch moved into a very responsible role in the half back position. He handled the pressure well also captaining the side with confidence. Mitch’s attack and defence, and ability to inspire improved greatly through the season. Mitch will move up to A grade next year with our best wishes. Liam Alder Played 10 Liam has been playing half before this year, but not having a dummy half, Liam was happy to play there and handled the job extremely well. Having a smart player in this position gives the team forward momentum. He seemed to fit straight into the hooking position this year with ease, being fast and able to scoot quickly keeping the opposition off side and crossing for many tries. Liam plays with passion for the game and as always tackles around the legs he was constantly in the points. Pat Stanton Played 9 Pat, one of our best front rowers, proved he can get fit. Pat in the preseason was one of the hardest workers and could keep taking hit ups and stay on the field not needing a breather. On many occasions he did not want to come off, continually taking it up to the opposition with vigour. We are glad you are back next year Pat. Jay Yeomans Played 9 A long valued member of the team Jay had his share of injuries this season but when on the field put in 100% never wanting to have a rest on the bench. Always looking to take the ball up and usually making big metres. Jay also is moving up to A grade next year where I am sure he will do well Harrison Bitmead Played 10 Once again Harrison’s tackling was outstanding, He runs himself into the ground always putting 110% effort in every game. He missed some training nights and a game for a large tattoo. This player you could term as ‘the quiet achiever’. His work rate is exceptional always topping the tackle count. Harri(Continued on page 28) 27 UNDER 19s PLAYER PROFILES (Continued from page 27) son’s passion for game is demonstrated in the way he plays. Quietly spoken this polite young man does well in sport and will do well in life. We are looking forward to him sticking around. Jorden Bitmead Played 10 Jorden again came to us from a rugby background and remembering he is only 17, showed a real flair for the five eighth position and has a real ability in a field kicking role. He may only be small in stature but has a big heart taking any size player on in defence. He finished up playing in the centre showing his versatility. I hope to see him back next season. Grant Purcell l Played 8 Grant is another new player that fitted straight into the side, playing in the forwards. Grant was able to off load well and was a very committed defender off the line. Grant’s fitness level was high due to a good work ethic early in the season Chris Russell Played 7 Chris is a faithful and good team man. He is a fast finisher and good under the high ball. Chris played wing most of the season but had a bit of bad luck with a shoulder injury. He worked hard to get back on the field to finish well. Chris is also looked at being as being a steadying influence on the team thus stopping coaches and trainers being driven insane. Taylor Mathews Played 7 Taylor joined us a couple of games into the season this year coming down from Newcastle. He quickly made the five eighth position his own. Taylor is a talented player with great vision, he has a good kicking game both goal and field. Taylor also has an impressive step and goes through any sort of hole. Taylor was another player who also made an impact in the A2`s playing quite a few games. Taylor is another player that we are looking forward to having back next year. Alex Bate Played 10 Alex, the smallest man in the team but by know means the softest. The hits in defence he delivers would make you shudder and the ground he makes is deserving. Like his brother, Alex is a true athlete rotating around the ruck area playing lock and hooker. Alex is very versatile filling in wherever needed, he stands out with his speed scooting through holes in defence and tackling like a cattle dog. Ben Zalai Played 6 Ben just keeps improving and has a heart as big as a lion. Ben just loves the game, and having come from a soccer background has good ball skills. Ben was able to cross the try line this year. He is also one of the most polite, humble boys I have met, often being too hard on himself. He needs to stop doing that and make sure you are back next year Will Tams Played 6 Will played with us a few seasons ago, went to North Sydney Brothers and then returned this season He didn’t play that many games due to commitment to training, which was a shame because he was very strong on the field. Bynum Lynch Played 7 Another good centre, Bynum has the whole package. He is a very quick player who can play anywhere. Bynum did unfortunately have a shoulder injury this year but got over it and finished well. Bynum will move to A grade next year where I believe he will prove himself to be very valuable. Phil Domjen Played 10 (Continued on page 29) 28 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 19s PLAYER PROFILES (Continued from page 28) Phil was very strong on the wing, running very well with the ball and very reliable under high balls, Phil has become a stable member of the side having come from a soccer background, but we won’t hold that against him. He has moved into an outside back position able to rotate from centre to wing. He has developed physically to be very strong through dedicated gym work and crossed the try lines many times this year. Andrew Mills Played 10 A very quite achiever, Andrew just got on with the job in hand and did it well. He will be a good asset next season. Andrew was another one missing at training due to a very large tattoo?? A long time club player, a first year Under 19. In recent years Andrew has developed physically into a very powerful second rower able to show controlled aggression on the field as a enforcer, Originally a back on the wing and occasionally playing fullback, Andrew can play anywhere needed, also crossing the try line this year Kael Radford Played 9 Another club veteran, Kael had a good year, always looking to take the ball up and looking this year how to break the line and find the gaps. Always defending well off the line he seems to have mellowed in his personal life recently, it is amazing what love can do. Just make sure the lovely lady doesn’t keep you from footy next season mate. Emori Vunisa Played 7 Emori called me during the season to apologise to me for not coming to training and missing a game because he said “I’ve just come back from my honeymoon”. We were glad he came back as his hard running certainty had the team moving forward. He finished every game with a smile on his face looking forward to the next game. Emori is the type of player every team desires to have, a real character, a front rower, I think the A grade would like to have. Emori’s attitude inspires everyone else to lift and if he is able to give himself some more time for training, he could play at a high level. Having Emori this year definitely gave the side real back bone Joe Ellis Played 10 Joe, a rugby convert, looked good with the ball in his hands having a nice step at full speed. He needs to work on defence and he’ll be good for the A’s next year. Joe is very quick and a great finisher. Gary Bitmead gave him big raps at the start of the season and 'Joey' came through showing he is a great asset to the side and the club and not a bad bloke either. Kyle Reese Played 2 Unfortunately Kyle joined the knee club during the season but the games he did play he was damaging. Kyle can play anywhere on the field. I have been told we can look forward to having him back next year. Scott Cable Played 0 Scott had a knee injury before the season. As a good club man Scott turned up to most of your training. He also made himself available to train the 16’s well done Scott. Players injured but registered Jack Cosh and Rob Shipway. Both these players were carrying injuries this season and unable to take the field. We look forward to seeing them next year on the field 29 UNDER 16s FUNDRAISING Dear Belrose Footy Players, Families & Friends, Trainers, Managers, Coaches & Directors The U16's Boys & Parents would like to thank everyone for supporting our team during 2008/09 Touch & League season. To Lesley my Manager, thank you for all your work with the players, organizing the fund raising and trip away. To all the parents who helped with our team – thanks very much. Joe Cudmore Coach And the Manager… 2009 was the busiest, most eventful, emotional, and most satisfying year – and one that saw brave new players giving rugby league a go for the first time. The U16’s didn’t finish on top this year and we were not on the bottom either. We often played short due to injury and played against some very strong teams which showed us no mercy. Our tally was 2 wins and a draw. The boys always showed up and gave it their best shot, it was never a deterrent knowing they didn’t stand a chance, as long as they were together and played. The most memorable game for me was our draw with Mona Vale who has oodles of talent. It didn’t look that great at half time 18-6 to Mona Vale, but some influential words at half time and we returned to the field winning the 2nd half with a 24 all draw. To our boys & supporters, that was a win – and just what we all needed. It was refreshing having Joe Cudmore as coach this year and the boys appreciated his enthusiasm and knowledge on and off the field. It was great being invited to train with the seniors and unreal that A Grade won the grand final – congrats! . . . I note that some of these once 5 year old boys are now young men and they prepare to take off on their team trip. I cannot believe how quickly it all came around. Thanks to the parents that are always there to help out and lend a hand, it is all of this, and that above that makes Our Team. Lesley Eldershaw Manager 32 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 16s PLAYER PROFILES Tom Betts - Another year of block busting defence and tireless work ethic. An inspirational captain not scared of hard work or any opposition player, if we had a few more like him we would be unstoppable. Another good trainer. Luke Grant – A full season without injury the first in a long time. His best year with the ball and in defence, and with the combination of Stewy out wide, saw some fantastic trys. Always turned up to training and showed a renewed enthusiasm this season. Jake Layton – This was Jake’s second season and starting to show his true potential. Always at training and enthusiastic. A good defender & goal kicker with a bit more size he could develop into a great half back. Joel Trowbridge - Another solid season at full back with robust defence & many line brakes coming into the back line. Imagine what he could be if he turned up at training, maybe next year. Ros Power – His second season making improvements every week culminating his best game of the season against Mona Vale holding his own in defence and making many strong runs. Another good trainer. Harley Rutherford – His first season showed tremendous promise with his fearless runs & his all or nothing defence. He also suffered from a reoccurring foot injury which limited his time on the field. With his injury healed he will be a fantastic asset next year. Julian Pedersen – His first season with us was a great start to his league career, with strong defence & handy ball running he was a reliable player and good trainer. Jack Georgas – Jack’s back! with a couple of seasons away in the gym he returned with a new enthusiasm and confidence. Improvement in his defence & ball handling didn’t go unnoticed. Dylan Eldershaw - Played as hooker and winger this year and unfortunately had a few injuries. He improved defensively and always there at training. Blake Cradock – Took his game to a new level this year with a work rate second to none. Doing two hit ups most sets of six then defending like a demon. A player who turns up every week and gives his all, in the game and at training. (Continued on page 34) 33 UNDER 16s PLAYER PROFILES (Continued from page 33) Sam Stapleton – A new player this season slotted straight onto the wing holding his own and improving all the time. He used his strong voice to motivate the team, a side of him the coach appreciated. Jeremy Ryburn – With only two props he had a huge work load and he did it without complaining. He can be very hard to tackle and quite fast in the clear. Solid in defence and getting a little feisty as he gets older. Stuart Dunlop – A fantastic addition to our team, brilliant on his feet and great at finding the gaps. Unlucky with injury but undoubtedly a player of the future and one of the strengths of our team. Robert Maxwell – A late start to the season but a welcome addition. Grown in size in the years he’s been away but a strong defender & elusive ball runner – a big help to our small pack. Sam Mifsud – Moved to Jindabyne at the end of last season, came up for a few games when we were short, still hard to tackle and a robust defender, a big help. Thanks Sam. Rob Coy – Carries the ball up with enthusiasm and does his share in defence suffered with a few injuries this season, not to mention a trip in the ambulance after taking a knee in the chest - hopefully all is well for next year. Ben Smith – Joined us halfway through the season loves his footy and always trys hard whether at training or in the game. Josh Martin – Came along halfway through the season – a robust winger holds no fear – his season cut short through injury, hopefully all will be right for next season. Jacob Hayward – Arrived on our doorstep with a month to go – a player with potential and one that will improve with more time with the team – Nice to have you on board. Josh Pheiler – Unfortunately his second season was like his first being marred by injury and illness with a full season under his belt Josh could really be an integral part of the team. CALL 9939 3266, 35 DINNER DANCE 2009 36 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 14 TEAM REPORT This year we welcomed three new boys and families to the team. I hope Craig, Andre, Matt and their parents had an enjoyable first year with Belrose. We started the year with three mercy rules in a row which probably didn’t do us any favours. We didn’t get a competitive game until round 7 against Berowra, but with about five players out we got towelled up but the boys put in a great effort. The following games against Cove and Beacon Hill would see us only manage one good half against both sides which showed in the results. Two great games followed with a hard fought win over Berowra and a draw against Cove. We looked good going into the semis. The game against Beacon Hill was not pretty, but our last game against Cove was a gutsy performance by all on the field considering we didn’t get any favours from the officials. All players should feel proud of their achievement, even thought it didn’t feel like it at the time. Considering we never had everyone available to play or for training all year and are still to achieve the untapped potential left in the team, who knows what they could achieve next year. Many thanks must go to our volunteers in Shauna, Vince, Ross and Dave for all their hours they have put in this year. Lastly, we all wish Jordan Stanton and his family all the best in Melbourne next year, but will welcome him back any time. He will be sorely missed, UNDER 14 PLAYER PROFILES Jeremy Atkins Started the season out side in the centres and second row but moved to his preferred position at prop and closer to the action. His aggressive running style put the opposition on the back foot and laid the platform for the backs. Achieved his milestone 100th game in impressive style in the last game against Cove. 2009 Games (10) Club Games (100) Tries (6) Luke Betts Played all season at half except one game through a groin injury. Gave both backs and forwards plenty of good A & A’s and combined with a good short kicking game put the opposition in two minds. Achieved his 150th game early in the season against Narraweena. 2009 Games (13) Club Games (160) Tries (2) Goals (1) 37 UNDER 14 PLAYER PROFILES Mitch Britton Started the season on the wing and then as his confidence grew moved to the centre and then fullback. Probably played his best footy at fullback but moved back to centre due to team injuries. Definitely his best season for a while. 2009 Games (13) club Games (81) Tries (4) Charles Buttrose Showed great determination when moved to his preferred position at centre. When needed, scored some good tries when he got away from the defense showing what speed he really has. 2009 Games (13) Club Games (132) Tries (4) Jack Cantrill Prop was his position because he would always take the ball up straight and hard and it didn’t matter what the opposition did to him. This was most evident in the last game against Cove. Only one of the two to play all games this year. 2009 Games (14) Club Games (88) James Cropper Took on again both responsibilities of captain and goal kicker and when the team needed a lift, he would give it to them with either a try or try saving tackle. Ran a great line which resulted in many tries. 2009 Games (13) Club Games (42) Tries (11) Goals (35) Ben Duce Played all season on the wing except one game at centre and covered both positions well for a small fella. Had a real go against bigger opposition in defense. 2009 Games (13) Club Games (25) Rob Fifita Started the season at prop but later moved out wide to second row. With a bit more space between him and the opposition it gave him time to wind up and be more effective. His front on defense improved as the season progressed. 2009 Games (13) Club Games (29) Tries (1) 38 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 14 PLAYER PROFILES Peter Kemp Mr Versatile covered centre, second row, lock and finished playing hooker. Covered each position with the same enthusiasm, but made the dummy half position his own with speedy service and great defense. 2009 Games (13) Club Games (67) Tries (1) Luke Lupton Played a variety of positions this year from wing to lock to prop. He didn’t mind carting the ball up into much bigger opposition and his around the legs defense really improved as the season went on. 2009 Games (11) Club Games (27) Andre Marshall A newcomer to the team, he missed the trials and the first game but fitted into the wing position with ease. A good kick returner with a good step and a good set of hands with the high ball. 2009 Games (11) Club Games (11) Ryan Mawhinney An injury plagued season for Ryan this year only playing half the games. Whether he played centre or lock he always ran with the same gusto in attack or into the defense. A good strike record with scoring 8 tries with only 7 games played 2009 Games (7) Club Games (131) Tries (8) Craig McMurrich A new player to Belrose this year. A great addition to the team, not only for his aggression in defense but his leadership and communication. Scored plenty of tries this year, but just as impressive setting them up 2009 Games (11) Club Games (11) Tries (10) Daniel Paterson Played most of the season at five eighth, but also filled in at dummy half. Daniel has got a good step and show and go which resulted in a few good tries. Showed he can set up tries as well with his favourite cross kick. Daniel also played all games this season as well as playing his 100th game against Berowra. 2009 Games (14) Club Games (103) Tries (5) Goals (2) 39 UNDER 14 PLAYER PROFILES Thomas Pollifrone Heavily marked this season after last year’s onslaught. Still managed to score a remarkable 16 tries in 13 games against the best defenders in the opposition. His defense improved during the year with him giving the opposition as much as they game him. 2009 Games (13) Club Games (29) Tries (16) Jordan Stanton Played second row all year, developed a really good ‘A’ line bagging quite a few trys as a result. Played every game like his last from start to finish. He gave everything he had in both attack and defense. We will really miss him next year. 2009 Games (12) Club Games (27) Tries (7) Matt Weaver Another new boy to the team. Showed potential during the season and with a bit more training and a few more games under his belt, could really fire. 2009 Games (9) Club Games (9) Tries (2) Scott Wilson Started the season at dummy half and moved to various positions when needed. Finished up on the wing with safe hands both in attack and kick return. 2009 Games (12) Club Games (139) Jordan Woodhouse Started the season as prop but we needed another dummy half. Jordan filled in nicely when coming on, giving good service to both forwards and backs. 2009 Games (13) Club Games (99) UNDER 14s SPONSORED BY Let’s get noticed from simple business cards to the most innovative corporate designs Call 1300 883 470 40 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 13s PREMIERS DIVISION 2 - COACH’S REPORT Congratulations boys on an awesome effort to win the U13 Division Two comp this year. After getting hammered 40-14 by the Ferrets in the Major Semi, getting the chance to repay the favour to our local rivals meant we had to first overcome a very determined Cromer in the Final. Secondly we had to ensure that our starting props never again warm up anywhere near each other, after one ended up concussed and the other with strained ligaments in the hand in an accidental collision, just minutes before the start of the Major Semi. While the intensity was great, it just needed to be directed at the opposition. Yet another lesson learnt the hard way! In what was a very close encounter in the Final against Cromer with the lead changing many times, a great team try with a sideline conversion in the dying minutes got us home 22-18 and into a Grand Final for the first time. With a never-say-die attitude and a growing belief in themselves, the boys seemed to be in good shape for what was expected to be a torrid Grand Final against the old foe, the Ferrets. While we were disappointed with the loss to the Ferrets in the Major Semi, the last minute, grinding win against Cromer in the Final had the team better prepared than a week on the training paddock, while the 40-14 loss to the Ferrets also gave the coach plenty to work with in Grand Final week. Its Grand Final day and the boys arrive at Nolans 1 looking switched on, while during the warm up they also seem very focussed on the task at hand. Even better, no training mishaps this time around, so they were ready to go by the time the ref blew the opening whistle. Sure enough, a 10 minute Belrose blitz from the opening kick off had us up 14 nil after three quick tries, while the Ferrets were looking shell shocked. (Continued on page 42) 41 UNDER 13s REPORT (Continued from page 41) While the middle period of the game saw the Ferrets come back with a couple of tries, the boys kept working hard in a real team effort , maintaining their strong lead from start to finish, ending up as deserved 36-18 victors. The fact that five players shared the seven tries the team scored on the day was further indication of the overall team effort. All in all a fantastic year, with the Grand Final win a great reward to the boys for believing in themselves and for developing a strong team spirit that saw every member of the team from 1 to 19 making valuable contributions week in, week out. Special thanks go to Sue Abrahams for a great job managing the team this year, Charlie Dunn and Pete Cox for running the water out to the boys on game day (along with some gentle words of encouragement from time to time), the Dad’s for running the lines and to the parents for their support of the team. I would also like to thank Pete for his valued advice throughout the year, assisting me to improve the team’s communication and leadership skills, particularly during the finals series, most appreciated. Look forward to seeing you all with the Belrose U14’s next year. Harry Georgas – Coach UNDER 13s PLAYER PROFILES Beau Abrahams What can I say, yet another outstanding season for our inspirational captain. Beau led from the front in attack and defence, regularly topping the tackle count while he continued to develop his playmaking and kicking game at five-eighth. Also stepped up as a team leader during the year, providing plenty of encouragement and support of his team mates in a matured display of team captaincy. No better example of Beau’s inspirational play than when we were behind by 2 points in the last few minutes of the Final against Cromer, he took the game by the scruff of the neck with a gutsy 60m run, leading to the winning try scored by Ryan. Also kicked the conversion from the sideline to boot. Well done Beau on a great year! Tries: 14 Goals: 4 2009 Games: 12 Total Club Games: 76 Max Bailey Max played in the Centres again this year, making the most of extra space out wide and down the touch line. Max is a dynamic runner with real pace, great hands and determined defence. Max always lifted for the big games and for the big moments. A real talent, very dangerous if (Continued on page 43) 42 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 13s PLAYER PROFILES (Continued from page 42) given half a chance. Max forces plenty of the opposition defence to aim up on the right side of the field, quite often opening up further opportunities for our left side attack. Tries: 6 2009 Games: 12 Total Club Games: 66 Angus Buckley Angus played mostly Wing or Centre this year, although he ably filled in playing second row when required. Angus worked hard both on his game and his fitness this year making plenty of improvement. While Angus found the road runs a challenge, regardless, he always turned up and put in a determined effort, never giving up when the going got tough, which held him in good stead during game time. Angus defended strongly in the line and made some great runs down the sideline, particularly against a strong North Sydney Brothers side at Tunks Park. 2009 Games: 10 Total Club Games: 16 Charlie Buckley Charlie is our talented Mr Versatile, playing pretty much anywhere in the forward pack, although he also spent time covering for us on the Wing or Centre now and again. A great defender with a very good tacking technique and a determined runner of the ball. Charlie missed a few games due to injury late in the season, although fortunately he made it back in time for the important Final and Grand Final games. 2009 Games: 8 Total Club Games: 14 Jarrod Cox Jarrod played Hooker for us this year after playing up last year with the Mona Vale Under 13’s side. Jarrod’s experience and skill around the ruck was invaluable as the team moved from playing Mod to International rules this year. Jarrod’s flat passing game out of dummy half had the forwards hitting the advantage line at pace, while his short kicking game gave us more options and variety in attack. Jarrod also developed his game throughout the year as the opposition began to work out some of his plays and restrict his try scoring ability from dummy half. Jarrod’s smart play out of dummy half in the last minute of the Final against Cromer where he pushed the ball wide to Declan who then calmly passed on to Ryan who dived over for a try wide of the ruck was a match winner and showed plenty of vision. Jarrod’s goal kicking also won us many games throughout the year, in particular his two goals in the Final against Cromer kept us in the game and in with a chance to win the comp. Tries: 13 Goals: 24 2009 Games: 12 Total Club Games: 12 (Continued on page 44) 43 UNDER 13s PLAYER PROFILES (Continued from page 43) Matt Dunn Matt played mostly on the Wing this year and always showed plenty of heart and determination in defence, taking on any sized opponent with an excellent low tackling technique. Matt also made good ground when running scoots from dummy half to gain valuable metres for the team. Matt is a super keen and willing contributor who continues to improve his game with sheer guts. Just love his attitude! 2009 Games: 10 Total Club Games: 25 Branden Garratt Branden moved to the Wing from Fullback and had a great year in both attack and defence while scoring a couple of great tries this year. Branden always made plenty of ground with his scoots from dummy half and was always strong in defence out wide, cutting down much bigger opposition time after time. Branden’s courageous bodyline hit on Finn in the Grand Final will be long remembered. Tries: 2 2009 Games: 12 Total Club Games: 72 Ben Georgas Ben played Halfback again this year and continues to improve his playmaking skills, calling the bigger forwards around him and providing plenty of variety in attack, while using the ball to great effect. As with all good halfbacks, Ben is also a great talker, providing plenty of encouragement to the team when required. Playing in the middle also means Ben sees his fair share of defence, working hard to drag down the forwards that run his way. I won’t forget Ben’s oneon-one hit in the Major Semi when Finn picked up the ball from lock in the scrum and tried to run over the top of Ben, but instead was smashed to the ground in a copy-book front-on tackle. (Don’t think a surprised Finn will forget that one for a while either) 2009 Games: 12 Total Club Games: 127 Daniel Georgas First season of Rugby League for my nephew Daniel, who mostly played in the second row gaining plenty of experience in the front line as the season progressed. Courageous with a neversay-die attitude, Daniel couldn’t get enough Rugby League after a playing a few seasons of Soccer. Wasn’t fazed by the big forwards running his way and made good ground through the middle of the ruck with a handy step. Will be a big improver next year now he has his first season under his belt. 2009 Games: 8 Total Club Games: 8 (Continued on page 45) 44 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 13s PLAYER PROFILES (Continued from page 44) Declan Larkworthy Declan played in the second row again this year, giving the team plenty of go forward with his trademark hit ups off dummy half and excellent decoy running to keep the defence guessing. Dec really seemed to enjoy the step up to International rules and greater responsibility of being heavily involved in the forward plays. Dec also stayed calm and collected to throw the final pass to Ryan who dived over and scored in the sudden death Final against Cromer, winning the game on the bell and seeing us through to the Grand Final. 2009 Games: 12 Total Club Games: 74 Andy Layton Andy played Fullback again this year, proving once again to be a great asset to the team with relentless defence and dynamic attacking play. Andy usually played in the front line defence making a heap of tackles, before moving back into a covering position in time for the opposition kicks or a last tackle play, set after set. Very quick and agile on his feet, Andy made plenty of ground through the middle of the ruck, while he made the opposition regret kicking the ball his way when at Fullback. A real competitor who gives the team everything he’s got, week in week out. Tries: 3 Goals: 2 2009 Games: 12 Total Club Games: 25 Daniel Martin Daniel joined us from Rugby this year, playing mostly in the second row and lock, although he played a couple of blinders at Prop when needed to fill in up front. Daniel is a talented player who plays with loads of passion and determination, a cornerstone of the pack who never takes a backward step. Daniel loves to hit hard in attack and defence, while always looking to make a contribution to the team effort, never leaving others to do the work for him. 2009 Games: 12 Total Club Games: 12 Josh Martin Josh mostly played lock this year with a few stints in the second row. Josh is a real workhorse who just goes and goes all game long. Super fit, agile and quick on his feet, Josh loves tearing through the ruck making valuable yards, set after set, while also a great cover defender showing great speed across the park. Josh was especially fired up for the Grand Final, strongly encouraging his team mates to step up the intensity, hold nothing back and just to rip in to the Ferrets. A great asset to the team. Josh also racked up his 50 game milestone for Belrose this year, well done Josh! Tries: 3 2009 Games: 12 Total Club Games: 60 (Continued on page 46) 45 UNDER 13s PLAYER PROFILES Julian Matouk Unfortunately Julian had an injury disrupted year; firstly due to a broken collarbone in a trial match then just after recovering, he sustained a facial fracture in an accident at home which pretty much ended his season. We missed Julian’s hard running this year, although he managed to score a trademark kick and chase try in the game against the Ferrets at Ferretville. Tries: 1 2009 Games: 4 Total Club Games: 34 Dylan Quadria Dylan played Wing for us again this year, although his family moved to the Gold Coast in July which cut short his season with Belrose. Dylan was having a great second year of Rugby League, proving almost impenetrable in defence on the Wing with his grass cutting tackles and almost untouchable in attack with his valuable scoots from dummy half giving the team plenty of go forward. Thanks Dylan for your contribution to the team and we wish you well on your move to the Gold Coast. (We already miss your classic one-liners at training!) 2009 Games: 8 Total Club Games: 23 Duncan Randall Duncan played Prop again for us this year, building significantly on what was a very impressive debut season last year. A very physical player, Duncan took his game to another level this year with ruthless defence and powerful, unrelenting attack. Duncan also took it upon himself to lead the forward pack week in week out, standing up to any challenges issued by the opposition in a dominant display of rugby league front row play. Duncan also showed plenty of courage throughout the year playing with a fractured thumb in one game then played with concussion in the Major Semi against the Ferrets. Tries: 9 2009 Games: 12 Total Club Games: 25 Dean Williams Dean really enjoyed his move into the forwards this year after playing most of his first year on the Wing. Dean always worked hard in defence for the team and happily took on the bigger forwards that came his way. Dean also took the ball to the line with plenty of determination and was always looking for work. A big improver this year who loves to play in the front line. 2009 Games: 11 Total Club Games: 26 Ryan Wilmot Ryan played in the Centres again this year and has really developing a liking for the position. Ryan’s defence out wide is rock solid, week in week out, yet he stepped it up to another level in 46 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 13s PLAYER PROFILES the Grand Final with repeated bone crunching tackles that won’t be forgotten. Ryan also remained cool and calm to score the match winning try in the dying minutes of the Final, then repeated the effort by scoring the opening try in the Grand Final. Tries: 3 2009 Games: 11 Total Club Games: 44 Jordon Zagorski First season of Rugby League for Jordon who played Prop for us this year, partnering Duncan to provide a formidable pair of book-ends in the front row. Jordon really took to Rugby League after playing Basketball for a few seasons, giving the team plenty of size and power in the forwards for the very first time. Jordon has really worked hard to develop his game this year, improving his skill level week by week as the year went on, while learning to position himself for greatest effect in attack. Jordon’s never-say-die bustling run off our own try line in the last few minutes of the Final against Cromer gave Beau some space to work with to set up the match winning try scored by Ryan. Jordon also showed courage to play with injury after straining ligaments in his hand from an accidental collision with Duncan prior to the Major Semi against the Ferrets. To say I’m proud of the boys would be an understatement their defence and attack was much improved on last year and their communication and commitment is a feature of their game. At season end they had played 15 games with only 2 losses and they were in to the grand final. This of course was a much improved effort on last year and they should be very proud of how their season went The boys found positions that suited them as the year went on and we worked on their positional play and they clicked into a very good footy team. Unfortunately the grand final didn’t go the way we would have liked with our boys going down to Mona Vale 16 – 12 with three tries a piece, it was the goal kicking that proved to be the difference. But hey what a year!! Every year these guys improve out of sight and I’m sure next year will be no different. With next year being their first year of international rules with scrums, running from dummy half and set plays it is certainly going to be a lot of fun. Now none of this happens without a passionate bunch of people involved with the team, of coarse I’m talking about our manager Kerrie, coaching staff and parents. Many many thanks go to Kerrie for keeping us all on our game, organizing the team every week and making every ones jobs that much easier. Also Scott who must receive special mention, he is at training twice a week every week and adds those words of encouragement that keep the boys positive, also what he does with them when they are playing is fantastic. Gary also is in there with his words of motivation and encouragement to keep the troupes up and playing their best on game day, not to mention both of them keeping up the water. Also to Dean, who more often than not ran the line on game day. Thanks boys! Our parents are a good bunch of people doing their best to help out when required, getting the boys to training twice a week and keeping the boys fit and well to play footy. Having more than one child is tough on a Saturday, but we did very well getting the boys to the games, thank you all. And finally to the Belrose rugby league club, its board and all the volunteers that work tirelessly every week, also Roaming Bird the sponsor of the mighty U12’s, Thank you. 48 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 12s PLAYER PROFILES #1. Nick Ball. Club Games 41. Tries 3. Nick has made the position of fullback his own. With the ability to play nearly anywhere on the field, he reads the play well and also his defense is rock solid at the back. His talking on the field in defense means the boys fill any holes that appear and slide well with his direction. Nick is really confident under the high ball and just keeps on improving every year and is a real asset to our team. Great year Nick. #2. Brad Watman. Club Games 49. Tries 7. Goals 1. Brad has played most of the year out on the wing and did a fantastic job of it. Brad showed he wasn’t scared of getting in there and bringing the ball off our line, and helping out the forwards. One game in particular where Brad was bringing the ball back and with his trademark step and swerve, ran through the defense to score a length of the field solo try. Another really solid year, well done Brad. #3. Josh Britton. Club Games 22. Tries 2. Goals 2. Josh this year showed he was a handful for the defense, playing out in the centers his ability to break the line and his speed caused many headaches for the opposition .Josh has had a great year and has also improved in defense, well done Josh. #4 Tim Duce. Club Games 22. Tries 6. Tim did a fantastic job out on the wing, being one of the quicker kids in the team his ability to finish off and to leave the defense in his wake was a feature of his game. His defense and his ability under the high ball made us solid out wide. Great year Tim! #5 Daniel Nugent. Club Games 73. Tries 2. Daniel played at dummy half this year and did a sensational job, having played out in the backs most of last year swapping him into the middle worked a treat. Daniel has a great round the boot laces tackle and having him there made the team tough to get through in the middle. He gave good ball from there which allowed our ball runners an easy catch on the ball. Daniel has next year to look forward to with running from dummy half sure to suit him. Well done Daniel. #6 Hayden Gullick. Club Games 29. Hayden played most of the games this year at five eight, with the odd visit to the centers, where ever he played he was great .Hayden has the ability to pass both sides and his vision is improving each year. (Continued on page 50) 49 UNDER 12s PLAYER PROFILES (Continued from page 49) His attitude to the game is just what you want and defensively he is rock solid. Hayden has all the skills and is a very good footy player. Another great year, Well done Hayden. #7 Tom Collins. Club Games 44. Tries 9. Goals 4. Tom continued on from last year having an outstanding season playing every game and giving 100% every time he took the field. As the team captain Tom was both inspirational in attack and defense, his talk out there kept the team focused on the job and his ability to turn a situation around made him a very valuable player. Tom proved again that he is a great leader and the boys respond well to him. Having a terrific passing game he can put players into gaps and get the team on the front foot. Well done Tom awesome. #8 Jack Murphy. Club Games 19. Tries 2. Goals 3. Jack played up front in the engine room and showed the way forward on many occasions this year. Jack has always been good with the ball, a great pass and step but this year he really stepped up his defense. Jack was the one we turned to when the opposition had a large islander chap or an oversized player that needed to be looked after (sorry Jack). His ball and all tackles would make A grade players proud and his deceptive running proved tough for the opposition. Jack has proved this year he is a rugby league player no question. Well done Jack #9 Tom Church. Club Games 25. Tries . Goals 2. Tom started at dummy half but preferred it out wider in the centers, so he played there as well as any where we needed him. Tom pound for pound has to be one of the toughest kids getting around, his defense and ability to pull down any size kid made him invaluable in defense. In attack Tom also had a good turn of speed and a little step which saw him make many a break. Unfortunately Tom won’t be with us next year due to school commitments, we will miss you. Great year, well done Tom. #10 Ryan Hascard. Club Games 25. Tries 1. Goals 1. The big unit has improved a lot this year and has shown how hard he can be to pull down when he gets up to speed and runs the hole. Defensively Ryan was great standing his ground in the middle and putting the opposition on their backs. Ryan could often be found out in the centers and showed he can throw a good ball as well as offload in the tight stuff. Ryan, keep it up well done. Cody lead from the front this year with some bone rattling hit ups some great offloads and can throw a good ball, also crossed the strip a few times. But it was in defense he really made his mark, his ability to get off the line and belt the opposition soon became a feature of his game. Cody was solid all year and the team could rely on him. Fantastic Cody. #12 Garet Bastick. Club Games 39. Tries1. Garet this year played up front hitting it up in the early tackles and supporting the ball runner. Garet has been around now for a few seasons and he is playing well in that position his defense has certainly improved and his ball skills have also improved. Garet is a great team player always turns up for training and is a good kid. Great year Garet , Keep up the good work. #13 Luke Hurditch. Club Games 38. Tries 3. Goals 3. Lukey, what a player, has the complete game. Luke has the red hair and the attitude to go with it, in defense is rock solid, doesn’t miss tackles and has fantastic technique. In attack has the ability to break tackles and offload or throw a good flat pass (a bit of a fan). Luke is cut out to play and just keeps getting better. Excellent Lukey. #15 Lachlan Iacono. Club Games 23. Year two for Lachie and what a difference a year makes. Playing at dummy half in the middle of the field the defense asked a lot of questions of Lachie and to his credit he was up to it .Lachie pulled off some brilliant tackles and in attack played really well. Passed the ball well from dummy half is continuing to improve every year. Well done Lachie. #17 Nathan Linton. Club Games 26. Tries 2. Goals 1. Heres a kid that plays well above his weight, he is a terrier in defense not taking a backward step against mostly larger opposition . Nathan plays where you want him to and does a great job wherever he ends up. A really positive and a tremendous little player. A great year, Nathan. #18 Ben Woollett. Club Games 8. Tries 10. Goals 7. But while playing Rugby (Don’t get it) he breaks his collar bone. We assumed the worst, out for the season, but we had Ben back by round seven. First game back scores a try and kicks his goal and the rest is history. An elusive player with a good turn of speed and a good step sees Ben breaking the first line of defense on most occasions. Also possesses a good boot. A great first year Ben, well done. # 19 Christian Anderson. Club Games 12. Tries 6. Goals 2. A try scoring machine with deceptive speed, he winds up and he’s off. Fitted in well with the boys playing up front, carted the ball up strongly and was always there in support. Learning the game, was quick to pick up the idea of defense and numbers in tackles as well as pulling off some beauty’s of his own. Christian is a pleasure to coach listens and gives 100%.Well done Christian. # 20 Liam Jewell. Club Games 11. Tries 2. Goals 1. Liam's first year of league and took to it well. Finding a position for Liam proved difficult with him being very good defensively and quite quick with a good pass. So Liam spent the year playing in the forwards and in the backs. With soccer also on Liam’s calendar he was quite busy some Saturday mornings. Not easy coming to a team as the new kid, did well. Good work Liam. # 22 Jake Morrison. Club Games 11. Tries 8. Goals 5. Very, very impressive from the word go. Big and strong, Jake runs with determination and has a great swerving running style. Jakes first year of league and I’m sure it wont be his last, busted the line at will and has speed to burn. Through the year developed his passing and goal kicking, and will prove to be a real find as his footy career continues. Well done Jake, an awesome year! Continued hard work at training (most of the time) and a determined team effort each weekend certainly paid off for the under 11's this year. The improvement in this team has been incredible, not only surprising ourselves but more importantly, the opposition. The boys dramatically improved their defense this year, realising how much enjoyment can be gained from team work and building a strong team spirit. Many thanks to our trainers Dean Rienecker and Greg Arnold for their hard yards and words of encouragement to the boys each weekend at game time. Thank you also to the dads who ran the lines and of course, many thanks to the parents for their taxi services and enthusiastic support throughout the year. An honourable mention to Josh Wills who racked up 50 games for Belrose during the year and to the very talented Isaac Arnold who scored 15 tries and 9 goals in 12 games this season. Most importantly, huge credit for the teams’ success must go to the coach, Brad Martin who is a true motivator and an inspiration to all the boys. Week in and week out he preserved with a bunch of 10 and 11 year old boys (a mean feat to say the least), teaching them not only the skills of rugby league but many of the values that they need in life. Brad was able to provide just the right balance of discipline, motivation and guidance to develop and bring out the very best in every player. Most of the boys had never played rugby league before. As each game passed, the boys grew into a team of mates and it was exciting to watch their skill level improve. Perseverance and hard work from the coach Hayden Williams saw the boys turn up to training and the matches each week, full of gusto and eagerness. While we may have been beaten on the scoreboards, we were rarely matched for enthusiasm. Special thanks to Joel, Callum & Josh W from the maroon team who backed up for the whites for most of the season and honourable mentions to Nick, Jack, Ryan & Sam who played many games for maroon team, even in the finals series. You should all be very proud of yourselves. Many thanks to our trainer Huw Martin for your tireless efforts at game time and to the dads who ran the lines. I would also personally like to thank my trusty assistants Clare and Luise for doing a great job each weekend. Extra special thanks to all the parents and supporters on the sideline, cheering the team through every game and adding to their confidence. Finally to the coach Hayden. Thank you for your support to Brad and the enthusiasm you instilled in all the boys from both the maroon and white teams. It was a huge task coaching a team of mostly new players but you were able to teach them the fundamentals of the game and how to enjoy themselves. Your efforts were very much appreciated. Season 2009 Games: 8 Total club games: 8 62 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 10 MAROON REPORT In our team this year, we had six new boys who joined the team at the start of the season, a number of whom had not played rugby league before. They were joining a core group of players who in the previous three seasons, had been grand finalists in the Maroons competition each year. Realistically, it would take some exceptional circumstances to match the heights and glory of previous seasons. Set in more pragmatic and SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timely) terms, the goals for the team at the start of the season were to build a new team starting with some basic skills and building on from there. We would need as much rugby league action as possible, both training and games to build the team’s skills. It was fantastic for the coaching staff and all the parents to watch the boys improve both individually and as a team as the season progressed. Unfortunately, we missed out on a lot of training time and two league games due to the bad weather. In addition, due to the league competition having only seven teams, we had two bye rounds when ideally we would have preferred to be playing footy. It was difficult to build momentum with so many breaks and disruptions, especially the end of the season run into the finals. Nevertheless, in spite of all these hurdles, the boys gave their all in every game, never gave up and showed great courage and commitment in games, often against bigger and more experienced opponents. Each of the players can look back with pride on what each of you has achieved both individually and as a team. We can also look back on some memorable games, especially our 22-16 win versus North Curl Curl in torrential rains on a field that was more suited for water polo. In addition, the boys were unlucky in their semi-final game versus Avalon after putting in such a big fighting performance. On another day and with a bit more luck, we could have been the victors by that narrow 6 points margin. We would like to thank Warren and Keiran (our trainers), Michael Holmes and Paul Harris (our match day officials), Amanda Wilkes (our social events co-ordinator), all those who helped out at training and on game day and all the parents for your support this year, especially in getting the boys to training and games on time. We couldn’t have done it without you. We look forward to seeing you all back to Belrose RLFC next season. In the meantime, we would love to see as many of you as possible at touch footy in October. Mix that in with a number of veterans and it was always going to be a fun year and that is certainly how it turned out. The direction from the coach was not to worry about winning or losing but to give 100% to your team mates and go out and have fun and really enjoy playing footy. Halfway through the season things were starting to gel nicely and the boys were at last spreading out in attack and defense. While no wins were coming our way, I was really happy with the big effort that the boys were putting in. With the trusty duo of Jack Keys at dummy half and the now legendary Nick Doyle at first receiver, things were starting to look good. With the big boys, Ben, James K and James C leading the way and Louis, Tom and Danno creating havoc for the opposition things were looking good. While we didn't win a game this year, we came so close on many occasions and probably should have won a number of them. Unfortunately up against some of the bigger teams in the comp, our smaller boys were fighting an uphill battle in defense. By the last game against Christian Bros, the boys were on fire. This was easily their best effort all year and it was oh so close. There were some great tries in this game which were all about team work which was great to see. The defense was the best it had been all year. All the hard work that the boys had been doing at training really showed through in this match. Well done boys this year. I think I can safely say that everyone who watched you play this year went away thinking that this team really puts the effort in. it really has been a pleasure coaching you this year and hopefully we will see you all back next year for another shot. Deb Knuth I also want to say a bit thank you to Deb Knuth for sticking her hand up and taking on the Managerial Duties. A job well done Deb. Thank you very much. To the boys that helped me out this year and assisted me no end, I can only say a big thank you. Bruce Doyle To Bruce for his assistance in coaching this year, Bruce was always there to offer advice and his pearls of wisdom were always a pleasure to listen too. It was a big learning curve for Nick but it soon became apparent at training that there was some hidden mongrel lurking inside that small frame. Often at training Nick would take on the big boys and take them down. I really hope to see Nick back next year and see how he progresses. I'm sure he will be a handful for any team now he know’s what he is capable of. James Carlson Wombat. A name that sums up the legend that is James Carlson. In attack, his burrowing runs, his wriggling and turning in the tackle. In defense, his ability to get the attacker on his back in the tackle. Probably up there with the best marker’s in the team and always willing to take on the big boys. What a good little player James was by the end of the season. Way to go James! Luke Dal Bianco "Steppy" Dal Bianco certainly showed a few of the boys up with his agility and his willingness to get involved. By the end of the season, Steppy would be one of the most improved tacklers in the team and certainly surprised a few of us with his bone crunching tackles on the wing. With a bit more ball, I am looking forward to seeing Steppy do some of the runs that made him famous on a Wednesday night. Way to go Steppy! Nicholas Doyle "Nicco" was one of the quiet achievers of the year for me. Always a willing listener and always eager to learn. Nick soon had his role as First Receiver down pat. The team could always count on Nick to be in position ready to play his role in the back line. As the season progressed Nick's passing out of first receiver got better and better and with that came the confidence to start leading the team by making sure everyone was in position for each play. An un sung hero but definitely a vital cog in this machine. Great Effort Nick! 69 Josh Hanshaw This was "The Hampster's" second season of the game they probably should play in heaven. Josh's tackling in the second half of the season improved out of sight. Perhaps there was a little home coaching going on with Coach Dougie. Josh could really be relied upon to not miss tackles out wide and he definitely became Mr Reliable out there. Josh is also a ball player in the making and hopefully next year Josh will be able to get closer in and show everyone what we all know he is capable of. Well done Josh. Tom Henderson "Hendo" came into our team as our newest recruit and probably the smallest as well. It didn't take long for Hendo to show everyone that he was arguably the fastest in the team and a great little defender. Hendo scored some great tries this year bursting through at pace but my memories of Tom this year would be of his try saving chases in defense. He never gave up and he really set the standard on how to chase people down. Go Hendo! Jack Keys "Keysie" is one of those players that is always in the thick of things. Jack played in his favourite position off dummy half all year and just got better and better all year. His delivery to First Receiver improved with every game and by the end of the season he was on fire. "Keysie" is a real inspiration to his team mates and gave everyone a lesson in how to keep up with the play. Well done Jack. James Knuth "JK" came down from Maroons this year to rediscover his form and show the boys in the Whites how to fend off would be tacklers. After his first posting to "The Cone of Silence" at training one night, JK learned the lesson and never looked back. He was always a handful for the opposition in any game that we played and showed that not only is he big, but he has some pace as well, a dangerous combination that I'm hoping we will see more and more of next year. When JK runs straight, watch out!! Quinn O'Connor This was Quinn's first year in league having come over from Union. A smart move indeed. After an initial settling in period, Quinn started to get his confidence up and become a real part of the team. He really enjoyed training and this is where he started to show glimpses of what he is capable of. There are two highlights for me this year with Quinn. The first one is his first try ever in league. Like 70 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 10 WHITE PLAYER PROFILES TRENT KEYS SMALLGOODS every good winger, he supported JK on a long dangerous run and eventually took a difficult pass to dive over for a great try. The second one was probably the best try saving tackle of the year. I reckon Quinn chased a Ferret down over 40 metres and just as you thought he had lost him, took him out over the sideline with a beauty of a tackle. Go the Mighty Quinn! Jonathan Overall Another new recruit and what a good buy he was. You could always count on Jonno to be in their sticking his hand up. His mastery of the conversion nearly got us home a couple of times this year and he is only going to get better with age. Once Johnno started hitting the line at speed there was no stopping him. Wether being used as a Forward or as a Fullback chiming into the backline, Jonno was always a threat. Keep it up Jonno! Ben Riddiough This was Bennos second year of Footy and it soon became apparent that he had been putting some work in on his tackling in the off season. I would say that Ben became arguably the most consistent tackler in the team and didn't shy away from hitting the big guys at any time. His hit ups in the forwards were always a handful for the opposition and he always could be relied upon to take it up one more time. The highlight for me would be his try in the last game against Christian Bros. Hitting the line flat chat and a weaving run straight through the middle took everyone by surprise. Well done Benno! Lewis Soden "Louie" was always going to be one of the stars of the team and he certainly didn't disappoint. When he was "on", he would take on the biggest and nastiest of the opposition and knock them down with his front on tackling. For such a little guy, it was pretty special to watch and we all enjoyed it when Louie was in the mood. The other side to Louie is when he has the ball in his hands. A natural at running and passing the ball. He showed that he can step up and lead the team by example. His passing and running game improved big time this year and i'm looking forward to watching him develop next year. Great Season Louie! 71 UNDER 10 WHITE PLAYER PROFILES TRENT KEYS SMALLGOODS Daniel Stone The Flash at the back or simply Danno. When Dan gets the ball he is always going to cause trouble for the opposition. He's big and fast and when he get going there is no stopping him. His now famous run around the opposition move earned him a number of tries this year and it was always good to see him in full flight. When Dan got the knack of holding his position he really started to stand out and be the threat that we knew he would be. Good Job Danno! Owan Wicks A quiet start for the year from Owan after a great season in 08. Owan really came back strongly in the second half of the season and showed everyone what a good player he is going to be with some great tackling and strong runs. Once Owan realises how big and strong he is, he will really step up and take them on. Again my highlight for Owan was from the last game of the season, his tackling was ferocious and his running at the line really took some stopping. Looking forward to seeing more of this from Owan next season. Great Effort Owan! To be with the boy’s every week and to see them develop their skills, build confidence, and improve like they did was Fantastic. To miss out on the Grand Final by one try was hard to accept, but did little to spoil the wonderful and extremely successful season we had. Each boy who played for us this year showed commitment at training and game day, and this showed with their performance. The boys stuck together as Great teams do and our success was a real team effort. Special mention must go to the team’s incredible sportsmanship. The Club should be proud of the way the boys conducted themselves on the field. A very special Thanks goes to Clarissa for managing our side. From emails, texts and phone calls, she was there to make things so much easier for me, the parents and the boys. Without her we would have all been lost. Super Effort! To coach such a wonderful group of boys, I thank the Parents. Your kids are a credit to you. The support, motivation and dedication you gave them during the season, made my coaching role so much easier. Thank you for your support and look forward to continuing our friendships next year. Thanks to Sam Stracey for his difficult job of working with me in moving and swapping kids every week between the whites and maroons - It wasn’t easy, but we got there. Other special thanks goes to Aiden Begaud, Todd Smith, Matthew Brewster, Jack Wood and Declan Myers who were often called upon straight from the field to make up our numbers on and off the bench on numerous occasions, your time boys is greatly appreciated. A big Thanks to Sean Wilson. His help with the kids at training and game day was really appreciated. I know the boys enjoyed his enthusiasm, and it was nice to have another coach to bounce ideas off. Thanks mate. To all the other helpers that gave assistance during the year in any shape or form, thank you. Thanks also to Noah Nevin our ball boy. Finally, I’d like to say my highlight of the year was watching the boys link arms after the game and sing our team song! How good was that? That feeling of belonging to a team hopefully will bring all the boys back next year, which will help us go one better! Thanks everyone. It was an absolute pleasure! Shannon Nevin 73 UNDER 9 MAROON PLAYER PROFILES BRADLEY ATKINS Brad or “Bulldozer” again led the way as one of our most experienced players. He was always seen with 3 tacklers on his back getting the hard yards down the field. His work didn’t stop there as he even crossed the try line a few times this year! Top Stuff Brad! BRENDAN DALY Brendan or “Rooster” was our little work horse around the play the ball this year. His consistent passing from dummy half was amazing, and this only helped Jack in his role at 1 st receiver. He never stopped and was always around the boots of our opponents. I don’t know what is in his puffer, but I want some! Great year Brendan! PETER SEALE Peter or “Big Red” unfortunately missed our semi finals due to injury, but before that was terrorizing our opponents with his now famous charging runs. His thundering footsteps sent chills down spines as he then left a trail of tacklers behind him. Pete also showed his toughness with awesome front on defense this year. Good stuff Pete! JACK WILSON Jack or “The General” was just that. He was our man who guided his troops around the field. If he wasn’t side stepping his way through, he was running over the top of them to score a try. He showed no mercy and put his body on the line every week. There were a number of memorable cover tackles as well. See you next year champ! JAMES BEANGE James or “The Demolisher” was an upsetting loss for most of the season, but came back with amazing confidence. James is the best junior league tackler I have seen. He is fearless and chopped down even the biggest of boys, but that’s not all! He’s a damaging runner as well making many long runs down the field. Great comeback James! NIC CAMPBELL Nic or “Mr. Versatile” had an amazing 1st year of league. He played anywhere from 1st receiver to wing and adapted perfectly. I loved the way he’d come in off his wing to smash a forward, ball and all, or side step his way through a tight defense. How good will he be next year? Top effort mate! CHARLIE GRIFFITH Charlie or “The Tank” was one of the big improvers this year. He developed his tackling skills and crushed many as he raced up in defense. He scored a few tries this year with his barnstorming runs where he was just too strong for them. It just shows, when you listen and learn you achieve! Great year Charlie! JOSH VAN VIETEN Josh or “Turbo” was another of our 1st timers and didn’t he go well. He was the quiet achiever who always played his heart out. His defense was solid in the centre’s and he ran with a little 74 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 9 MAROON PLAYER PROFILES swerve to get past the tacklers and set up tries. Another one who will improve so much next year! Well done Josh! BADEN SHEPHERD Baden or “Goose” was one of our top finishes this year with 10 tries. If he saw space, it was all over. He would pin his ears back and fly for the try line. With those legs pumping he was too hard to stop. His tackling improved out of sight during the year and he ended up putting on some big hits at the end of the season! Great year mate! CLAETON O’CONNELL Claeton or “The Axe” was a great asset to the team this year. At fullback he saved that many tries with his strength by holding them up or tackling them into touch. He’d then get energy from somewhere to run through the other teams using his awesome fend, beating 4 or 5 on the way. This was rewarded with 16 tries. Superb effort Clae! SAXON NEVIN Saxon or “Zip Zip Man” was unstoppable this year. From marker he’d annoy the other team all game with tackle after tackle after tackle. Then it was time for the crowd to get dizzy as he zipped from one side of the field to the other finishing more often than not, over the try line. This resulted in a remarkable 49 tries this season. Great work Buddy! ZAC STRACEY Zac or “Show’n’Go Stracey” played many games for us this year due to injuries, and he did a great job. His new role this year was to run hard and straight, and it paid off with good meters and even a few tries. His crushing ball and all defense was also a good asset to the team stopping many hard runners. Thanks Zac. BEN CAMPBELL Ben or “Shoulders” was another who helped us out a lot. A huge improver during the year, I was most impressed with his improved tackling, and the way in which he would go low and hard even though he was often half their size. He was no slouch with the ball either showing good footwork on many would be tacklers. Well done mate! 75 UNDER 9 MAROON STATISTICS Name Total Games Previous Club Games Total Club Games Tries Goals Total Points 4 0 4 1 4 49 16 6 11 3 8 9 3 9 6 2 13 11 0 4 4 8 34 6 34 16 20 222 86 24 52 20 48 16 7 13 16 16 14 14 14 14 16 14 71 42 0 11 55 20 0 24 0 0 64 87 49 13 27 71 34 14 38 14 16 78 2 7 3 0 2 1 1 0 2 2 13 2 4 4 4 0 2 0 2 0 4 0 9 0 16 36 20 0 12 4 8 0 16 8 66 8 10 8 14 6 4 8 9 3 8 8 20 6 64 0 0 25 40 0 25 0 0 60 52 0 74 8 14 31 44 8 34 3 8 68 72 6 U9 Maroon Bradley Atkins James Beange Nicholas Campbell Brendan Daly Charlie Griffith Saxon Nevin Claeton O’Connell Peter Seale Baden Shepherd Josh Van Zwieten Jack Wilson U9 Whites Aidan Begaud Matthew Brewster Ben Campbell Jack Collins Cameron Faulkner Zac Keech Delcan Myers Tom Sladin Todd Smith Joshua Stracey Zac Stracey Jack Wood UNDER 9s SPONSORED BY 9905 3383 76 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 9 WHITE COACH’S REPORT What a pleasure it was to coach such a great bunch of kids this year. Although we ended up on the wrong end of the table, the boys should hold their heads up high for their continuous effort throughout the season. In an obviously improved competition the boys stuck together and gave it their best every week. Often times were tough and when decisions went against us, all boys had their moments where they stood up to be counted for. Special thanks to James Beange, Charlie Griffith, Josh Van Zwieten, Jack Wilson, Nic Campbell, Bradley Atkins, Baden Shephard, Brendan Daly, Jack Begaud, Joel Dempsey, Jacob and Jack Cannon for filling in and helping out our team when we were short. To all families, I would like to sincerely thankyou for getting the kids to training and games and supporting and encouraging the kids throughout the season. I would like to thank both Jo and Debbie for their outstanding organising and managing efforts between you both you did an outstanding job. Thanks also to Jason, Adam and Dave and the other parents for line running, running the water on game day and helping out at training. Your help was greatly appreciated. Especially to our supporters hands down we had the best (and loudest) encouragement from the sidelines.. I hope the boys enjoyed the year together and are all inspired to continue with the game next year. Sam Stracey Coach UNDER 9 WHITE PLAYER PROFILES Josh Stracey Josh started the year with a bang finding the line and converting like a champion. Josh’s tackling skills have improved out of sight, never worried about how big the kid running at him was. It was priceless watching Josh run with the ball and it would take 5 players to get him down. Well Done Josh you had a great season. Aidan Begaud Aidan came into the team with a new found confidence and when he went over the line for his first try of the season that was it he was on fire. Tackling and defending all fell into place for Aidan and he was a very valuable team member. Congratulations Aidan Zac Stracey Zac’s defence this year improved out of sight, he was able to lift the spirit of this team mates. Zac’s attack was also much improved this year and it’s amazing how much ground he made just by running “straight”. Well done Zac. Matthew Brewster One of our newcomers of the year, Matty had a blinder each time he played he had the concepts down pat and gave his all each time he ran on the field. Great work Matty (Continued on page 78) 77 UNDER 9 WHITE PLAYER PROFILES (Continued from page 77) Jack Wood Jack had no fear with those big hard runs up the middle putting us into great attacking positions. Defensively he improved week by week leading the way in the middle with huge hits. Well done Jack. Todd Smith Todd started out a little shy but as the season progressed, Todd’s enthusiasm and effort exploded! His ferocious charges up the middle, left defenders scattered in his path. This energy carried forward to his defensive play. Great year Todd. Zac Keech Another newcomer to the team, Zac had a great season he was quietly confident of tackling and never afraid of the ball. Zac bonded well with his teammates and was a great asset. Great season Zac. Cameron Faulkner Cameron started the season very confidently finding the line and converting, Cameron used his size to his advantage and proved a force to be reckoned with. Unfortunately due to illness Cam missed some games but Well done for a great season. Declan Myers Declan had another great year for Belrose, he found the line for some great tries and proved to be a great runner when given the ball, he improved a lot by end of season and you can always rely on Declan to be there for his team week in and week out. Great effort Declan. Jack Collins Jack has improved immensely this year and had really improved in his tackling. Jack played well each week and had some new found confidence running with the ball. Great job Jack. Ben Campbell Ben had a blinder this season for another newcomer to League you would never have guessed he had not played before. Ben was a great all-rounder who stepped up to any challenge you gave him. Thanks for all your effort Ben. Tom Sladin Tom came late in the season when we were down on numbers. Tom had a great season and filled in well in dummy half and was confident with the ball. Tom was a pleasure to coach. Great job Tom 78 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 8 REPORT The 2009 season saw us welcome several new players and their families to the club. Whilst a bit light on for numbers, both sides played some wonderful footy and showed real improvement over the course of the season. We are very fortunate to have such a great group of boys and I’m sure all of them will do the Belrose Eagles proud in the years to come. UNDER 8 MAROON REPORT HAIR ON THE AVENUE Congratulations boys on a wonderful season and making the finals. Throughout the season the boys gelled well as a team playing some really gutsy and exciting football and it was no surprise to see them near the top of the ladder for the majority of the season. Unfortunately we were beaten by a vastly improved Cromer side in the first week of the finals series. Our boys gave it their all but just could not match them on the day. I could not be happier of the teams’ improvement and effort throughout the year. Boys, you did yourselves and your club proud and provided us all with some great entertainment along the way. Special thanks also to David Thomson, Matthew Reisp and Jack Begaud who backed up from the ‘Whites’ to help the ‘Maroons’ through the year – good stuff boys. I would like to thank Keiran Dempsey for his help on game days with both sides. Also a big thanks to our sponsor Kylie Dempsey from” Hair OnThe Avenue”. Thanks to Julie Cantrill for her work on the table on ‘Super Saturday’. I must make special mention of our Co-Coach and Manager Tim Fitzgerald who does an outstanding job and is a huge asset to this group. Finally I would like to thank all of the parents for their support throughout the season. Jason Cannon UNDER 8 MAROON PLAYER PROFILES HAIR ON THE AVENUE Jack Cannon Jack was very good again for us up the middle this season and worked very hard in defence. He has also informed the coach he didn’t miss a “Sausage Roll” all season. Jack also reached his 50th Game milestone for the club. Congratulations on a fine achievement. Finn Cantrill An early season ankle injury sent a scare through the camp. However it wasn’t long before the ‘Pocket Rocket’ was back to his best .Finn again proved to be a real danger man in attack and as always showed great courage in defence. 79 UNDER 8 MAROON PLAYER PROFILES HAIR ON THE AVENUE (Continued from page 79) Joel Dempsey Joel played another superb role for the team at dummy half. He has a great set of hands and his speed and elusiveness saw him rewarded with plenty of ‘Meat Pies’. Joel whilst small in stature put his body on the line many a time in defence. Liam Fitzgerald Liam was our “anchor man” at first receiver and provided the team with great service. This season Liam really took his game to another level. Powerful running and some terrific defence, he made a huge contribution for both sides. Zak Power Playing in his first year Zak had a fabulous season and showed plenty of improvement as the season rolled on. Always willing in defence, it was his powerful running game that gave his team great field position in attack. Zak also has a “huge boot” on him, and we could always rely on him to slot them over the black dot. Jacob Preston ‘Wow’….What a find! In his first season of Rugby League, Jacob played some really outstanding football. He scored some brilliant tries, although it was his amazing cover defence that denied many an opposition try. Jacob also played a big role in our ‘White’ team during the season. Luke Sully Luke improved so much as the season went on, scoring some tremendous tries with great footwork and blistering speed. He also played a very big part in defence, coming up with some very good tackles when it mattered. Luke also represented the Under 8’s in the Club the relay at Brookvale Oval and from all reports won by 12 Lengths easing down. Tyrese Walker As tough as they come, Tyrese produced another outstanding season in both attack and defence. Whether it be the crucial try or the must make tackle he was always there when it counted. Tyrese was the teams leading try scorer and his match winner against Mona Vale was a ripper. 80 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 UNDER 8 WHITE COACH’S REPORT HAIR ON THE AVENUE Well done to all the boys who represented the Under 8 White’s this year – you were all tremendous. The team welcomed three new boys to the club – Matthew, David and Jai and all three had bumper first years with the Eagles and were a pleasure to coach. The boys competed in some magical games of footy this year – unfortunately missing out on the semi’s by 1 solitary point…..Ouch! Who will forget the mesmerising come from behind wins against Cromer and Avalon, the heart-stopping 20 – all draw with the Ferrets (who incidentally, did go on and win the competition) and the final game of the year where we played our best game all year against Narrabeen only to be beaten after the bell – Ouch (again!). Special mention and thanks to the boys from the Under 7’s – Ben Watkins, Sean Wilkes and Timmy Barwell for playing for us when numbers were skinny. You all added plenty to the team and your efforts are greatly appreciated. Also, a big thanks to the players from the Maroons who backed up for the Whites – Joel Dempsey, Luke Sully and Jack Cannon. Extra thanks go to Jacob Preston and Liam Fitzgerald, who played two games of footy nearly every Saturday and really did give their all for both teams. Thanks to all the parents who gave their time to help and support the team, especially John Thomson and Luke Peterson who ‘manned’ the table each week. From a managers viewpoint – thanks for the support of all parents in the many causes through the year including canteen duty, raffle ticket selling and attendance at club functions, especially those that went to the Belrose Ball – we had a great night and we need to support these type of nights if we want the club to continue to grow. Tim Fitzgerald UNDER 8 WHITE PLAYER PROFILES HAIR ON THE AVENUE Luke Barwell Luke backed up again this year and was very good. This long striding lad is a real weapon in attack and can score tries from anywhere. Luke’s defence got better as the year progressed and when the intent is there he is a match winner. No doubt this years highlight was his four try effort (more than I scored in my whole career) against Cromer – a devastating display. Well done Luke. Jack Begaud Jack had a great year, leading from the front as the most experienced player. He did his best, week in and week out, and that’s want we want every boy to do. I am sure he will never forget his hat-trick of tries against Avalon - in the last 10 minutes no less! Congrats Jack on another fine 81 UNDER 8 WHITE PLAYER PROFILES HAIR ON THE AVENUE year with the Eagles. Jai Pandey Jai showed some real potential in his first year of footy. In fact, I think Jai at times surprised himself with what he could do on the footy field. For me his last game of the year against Narrabeen was by far his best. He tackled with purpose and ran the footy like I had not seen him do before. Jai was a good trainer and a real good fella to have in the team. Looking forward to seeing you again next year Jai. Geoff Peterson Another lad to really come out of his shell late in the year. Geoff played his second year of rugby league this year and made some real progress. The thing that impressed me the most was that in our two best games of the year – against Ferretville and Narrabeen, Geoff had the best games of his career. Keep up the good work Geoff and things will keep getting better and better. Matthew Reisp On debut for the Eagles, Matty slotted in perfectly. With a head of hair that I would die for, Matthew really showed me what a great future he has. He is a damaging runner who scored some fine tries and his defence will keep getting stronger as he gets older. Who could forget his try against Avalon where he busted through about forty five tackles to score a bottler! But most importantly to me, Matty’s dedication to training, attentive listening and great manners made him a very important member of our team and club. David Thomson David completes the list of rookies that represented us this year and again, like the others, he made a real good impression. David is a lean, wiry, speed machine who did some great things this year. He scored a stack of tries, including some sparkling long range efforts and his goal kicking was very reliable and true. David also played a number of helping hands with the Maroons and always impressed the selectors. Well done Dave – welcome to the Eagles and I hope you have a long and successful career with us. Adam Waldon Adam, another one of our veterans, really stepped up this year. Given the important duty of the ‘dummy-half’ role this year, Adam gave it his all. As the season went on his confidence grew, his concentration improved and passing accuracy was great. Adam dived over for well earned try but it was his ability to scoot from dummy half on the last, and look and find support players, that pleased this coach the most. Good job Adam. 82 Belrose Rugby League Football club Annual Report 2009 HAIR ON THE UNDER 8 STATISTICS AVENUE Player Games Under 8’s Tries Goals Jack Begaud Jacob Preston Geoff Peterson Luke Barwell Luke Sully Joel Dempsey Finn Cantrill Jack Cannon Matthew Reisp David Thomson Tyrese Walker Adam Waldon Liam Fitzgerald Jai Pandey 10 12 9 8 12 12 10 12 10 9 12 10 12 9 6 12 0 5 11 12 9 2 6 8 13 1 2 0 5 3 0 1 4 7 2 7 0 5 8 0 4 1 Zac Power 12 2 4 Games Other Grade Tries Goals 3 9 16 1 1 1 3 1 4 2 1 8 2 2 2 3 Total Season Pts. With the boys winning the Final 38-6 and playing just brilliantly. We are so proud with the effort from all the boys and they made it all the way to the Grand Final. This season has given me an overwhelming sense of satisfaction. From the parents dedication by bringing our ‘Stars of the Future’ week in, week out to training and to the games in the cold and sometimes far to early, I Thank You. To our players who have grown up in their own way and ability during the season, with friendships formed that hopefully will see them through many a season. Our team spirit never wavered throughout 2009, with our players giving their all to the final whistle in every game. Including my personal season highlight, the one glorious game in June at Lionel Watts when the heavens opened and the oval turned to sloppy mud and every player (and some parents) were soaked to the skin. Players standing shivering near the posts saying, “Are we finished yet” - Those memories will be with me forever, Thanks Kids. My aim this year was to concentrate on the kids having fun, having the new players learn the basics tackling correctly, catch and pass and spreading out when in defence, and the old heads develop their skills learnt in previous years. It was delightful to see smiles on all the players’ faces from the moment they turned up at training to the hours after the game each week, a true joy to see and why I enjoyed coaching them. Another highlight of the season was to play on Brookvale Oval, a huge buzz and an exciting time for all aspiring future NRL players. For all the players that will be moving onto the Under 7’s next year I look forward to having another great season, as your coach I will be there ‘with bells on’, as you are shaping up to be a team of very talented players. To those players who will remain in the Under 6’s you will have another fun filled year playing and learning our great game. I will be there on occasions to cheer you all on. To Trent, Craig, Alex and Dave thanks for all your help at training and at the game, I could not have done it without you. To all the parents, thank you also for all your hard work during the season, in the canteen and on the BBQ, at training and on game day, your efforts and team support are appreciated sincerely. To John, your efforts this year were very much required and greatly appreciated, at times that I was not available and you came through with flying colours (Red and Gold of course). I could bounce ideas off you and you responded with gusto. Thanks heaps mate. Finally, Amanda the team could not have done it without you, from the continuous lines of emails, phone calls, text messages even pieces of paper, keeping all of us up to date with anything and everything going on in and around the club throughout the season and beyond. Thanks ‘Love’, a truly outstanding effort with three boys playing in three different grades a job well done J Coach Sean Wilson 87 UNDER 6s (MAROON & WHITE) PLAYER PROFILES Riley Barwell Riley has improved immensely after his first year stint in 08’. His tackling is outstanding cutting down the other teams bigger players without a worry in the world and with strong straight runs gaining important yards on each and every run he made he will be a force to reckon with in future games. Well done, Riley. Games 2009 – 10 Tries – 2 Goals – 0 Club Games – 17 Zac Brand Zac one of many debut players he has had a spectacular season. He is a strong runner with the ball, scoring many a try with his electrifying pace having yours truly struggling on occasion to keep up. Zacs’ defence was solid throughout the season and was our most accurate goal kicker. Excellent work, Zac. Games 2009 – 15 Tries – 17 Goals – 5 Club Games – 15 Marcus Drago A great second season from our pocket Rocket. Marcus ran hard with the ball and was always there in support of his teammates. Marcus always had a smile on his face. Looking forward to seeing him back next year. Well done, Marcus. Games 2009 – 12 Tries – 3 Goals – 0 Club Games – 20 Billy Holmes Billy’s enthusiasm was infectious from the first training session, and although being one of our younger players he has the pedigree to become another great defender of the club. At times his tackling would not have been out of place in the Under 8’s. In attack he was always there wanting a run, and never disappointed making yards at will, a great debut Billy. Games 2009 – 17 Tries – 3 Goals – 1 Club Games – 17 Joe Keech This was Joe’s first season at the club who joined with his two older brothers. After a couple of games of running in circles around not only the other team but his own also, he quickly worked out that if you run straight it’s the shortest route to the try line! Austin always gave a sensational effort for such a small package. Look forward to seeing you next year. Games 2009 – 11 Tries – 1 Goals – 0 Club Games – 11 BJ Reisp A shy boy, BJ started off very quiet, but always on the paddock. Great teams man ship backing up his fellow players; he finished the season strongly with solid runs. Games 2009 – 16 Tries – 1 Goals – 0 Club Games – 16 Cameron Sharp Cameron is another of our quite achievers, starting slowly but after the few games he warmed to the task showing a solid running style charging head long into the defence in pursuit of the try line. His tackling come into its own later in the season making some quality supporting tackles, great teamwork Cam see you next year. Games 2009 – 12 Tries – 1 Goals – 0 Club Games – 12 Boyd Slater Boyd is the youngest of the Slater boys. For a little bloke he never took a backward step. Boyd always showed the way for some of the other new players charging off the line to be the first to tackle, even if it was the biggest player on the other side. When it came to running the ball he ran hard. Definitely a one to watch next year! Well Done. Games 2009 – 15 Tries – 1 Goals – 0 Club Games – 15 Jai Slater Jai is one of our biggest and definitely one of the hardest to tackle with his customary fend (the big don’t argue) that on occasion slipped a little high. He always made plenty of yards, scoring on numerous occasions and was brutal in defence. Jai is a great asset to the club. Look forward to seeing you play again next year. Games 2009 – 15 Tries – 14 Goals – 3 Club Games – 15 Charlise Sully Charlise is our only girl playing this season, holding her own in attack and defence, she was always there to support her fellow team mates, a great all round effort this year Charlise. Well Done, Christopher Games 2009 – 5 Tries – 1 Goals – 0 Club Games – 5 Liam Wilkes Like Harry, Liam is an elder statesman of the team, with his third year in the U6’s. Liam has plenty of potential and plenty of enthusiasm. He made it difficult for the defence every time with the ball charging forward with his customary barn storming runs then looking to offload, which payed off on many occasion. He chased until the end in defence showing that never give up attitude we all love at Belrose. See you next year in the U7’s. Games 2009 – 13 Tries – 5 Goals – 1 Club Games – 32 Kai Wilson Kai is one of our stronger players, both in attack and defence. His support play and hunger for the ball has involved throughout the entire game. Kai puts his body on the line with 100% commitment thus always helping the team go forward. He has also reaped the rewards by being our top try scorer this year. Excellent effort Kai see you in Under 7’s Games 2009 – 16 Tries – 23 Goals – 2 Club Games – 28 Saxon Wood It was great to see Saxon back after a spectacular debut season last year. Saxon stepped up a gear with his superb cover in defence stopping many a run away opposition dead in his tracks. His blistering pace and his allusiveness saw him cross the stripe on many occasions. Saxon is definitely another player to watch out for next year in the Under 7’s. I look forward to seeing him grow next year. Games 2009 – 2 Tries – 1 Goals – 0 Club Games – 2 Eli Kennedy Eli signed up this year as our youngest player. He showed great potential, with another year in the U6’s. Hope to see you next year. The first few years we only had a few teams made up of current players and a few teams of ex players. The concept was soon taken over by the Junior teams to the stage where last season well in excess of 1200 players took the field Last years Seniors teams contain many ladies teams as the trend of Social Touch grows. Not the best season! A1 Grade—one win from the finals! A3 Grade—big wins but even bigger losses B1 Grade—another hot and cold season. B3 Grade—Doug Tucker fails but new stars shine Not the greatest Season for Belrose but all teams recorded some exciting victories. After just missing out on B2 Grand final last season Thomo's boys went to A3 which may have been alright but they lost their star recruit Ian Church after the 2nd round . It seemed to go backwards from then on. These fellows are now starting to miss players because of weddings and injuries .There never seemed to be a week go by when Thomo didn't have to register another player. He registered over 30 players which would had made it very hard to get any team work all season. Thomo also got Chris Stolk & Paul Merryweather from A1 in one game but unfortunately the A1 boys found the going a bit tough in A3. Ben Bridges continues to be the teams top bowler while York Magee Daniel Allso David Reading and Matthew Thompson all preformed well at games throughout the season. It was batting that seemed to hold the team back this season although there were some newcomers who showed promise with the bat. David Reading Tim Boorman & Daniel Allso could have done with more runs despite some good scores during the season.. The team did finish last in the A3 Competition but got 40 competition points two more wins and they would have been in the finals .. One hopes this team can learn from the experience of this season and show the way in 2009/10. The B3 team was a late entry from the BTH Raiders. Again they were short of players however they did show they had players with ability. They got Club & Association B4 record holder Doug Tucker to play for them in a couple of games Doug's record innings of 246 seemed a long way off this season with a grand total of 10 runs. There were a number of players who proved they have ability Mark Lawther Angus Kirby & Andrew Press came in with outstanding results while Manager Steve Dowdall is a pretty good all-rounder. I am sure if the players got the same enthusiasm they have with their Soccer team they could go very well. The problem is they are pretty sloppy on detail... They took 64 catches and only recorded 3. A1 became our highest finishing team 5th one win away from the finals. It was a pity because when Dave Jeffs stood himself down the team lost by one run. A1 results improved with the signing of Adam Parkinson who would have undoubtedly picked up a number of awards if he had played the whole season. The batting was highlighted with 112 from Ryan Malm early in the season and he clearly won the batting award from the former most correct batsmen in the Club Chris Stolk , Ben Mc Naughton Adam Parkinson & Hayden Lambley also made their marks with the batting. People often say to me how did Meggsie play in the (Continued on page 98) 97 CRICKET 2008/2009 SENIOR COMPETITION REPORT (Continued from page 97) winning B1 team in 2001 . Well if you look at the team photo on the website you will see some pretty good players. This season one of those players stood out. Luke Harley took 26 wickets at an average of just over 12 in A1. Just imagine how easy it was in 2001 for Darren! One would suppose the support Luke got from Adam Brooks Andrew Walker & Ryan Malam would have helped this season.. . 2008/09 was a rebuilding seasons for the A1's and they look great for 2009/10. Dorian Smith is the Club’s longest serving player and individually had one of. his best Seasons in B1 When Big Doza hits them they stay hit and the one dayers are made for his cavalier style. Brad Galloway was again steady with the bat while Matt Westren James Rolland & Matt Duff improve their performances and Peter Howard 198 for the season will be beaten next year.. As well as going well in the batting James Rolland took the most Club wickets with 31.The nearest in B1 Matt Westren & Peter Howard with 14 The B1 finished a couple of wins out of the 4 but seemed to have enough players to be competitive all season Each year it is important that some people stand up to look after a team and they are the life blood of the Club. Thank you again to Chris Stolk ,Dorian Smith, Matthew Thompson - Laing , Brad Galloway , Steve Dowdall & Darren O'Brien Thank you also to all those who helped this season it sometimes takes a lot of effort to get teams on the field each week but in the end I am sure the effort is worthwhile. Special thank you to the President Hotel for their support of Belrose Cricket again this season... It's a pity they closed before our season finished. This may be why for the first time in a long while none of our teams made the finals I hope everyone enjoyed their Cricket this season and hope to see all again in a few months.
