CENTRAL SCHOOL DISTRICT to be a W W W . S C H A L M O N T. O R G 2 0 1 5 . 2 0 1 6 C A L E N D A R PROUD to be a Proud to be a Sabre There's much to be proud of in the Schalmont Central School District where we constantly strive to meet state standards for academic performance. Students also have access to a variety of extracurricular programs that expand the learning experience beyond the classroom and offer unique, creative outlets for expression. Schalmont produces scholar-athlete teams, accomplished artists, awardwinning musicians and civic-minded youth, who volunteer their time to help community members in need. In return, Schalmont has enjoyed the support of active, involved parents, businesses and residents, who have been instrumental in developing and maintaining a strong instructional program. "I am very fortunate to work with wonderful children and be a member of a community that appreciates the efforts of educators.” —Jason Thompson, Assistant Principal, Jefferson Elementary School SUNDAY AUGUST 2015 SMTWTFS 1 2345678 9101112131415 16171819202122 23242526272829 3031 TUESDAY WEDNESDAYTHURSDAY FRIDAY SATURDAY 12345 DFS meeting, HS Library, 6 p.m. HS Orientation, 9 a.m. MS PTO Spirit Sale begins (through Sept. 30) 6789 1011 12 Labor Day 9.2015 OCTOBER 2015 SMTWTFS 123 45678910 11121314151617 18192021222324 25262728293031 MONDAY NO SCHOOL Staff Development Day NO SCHOOL First Day of Classes, Grades 1-12 K appointments w/teacher SAA meeting, HS Library, 7 p.m. Kindergarten First Full Day of Classes MS Cherrydale Fundraiser begins (through Sept. 24) Friends of Music meeting, MS Band Room, 7 p.m. MS PTO Go Fund Me begins ACT Exam (register by Aug. 7) 13141516171819 Rosh Hashanah (begins at sundown) Board of Education meeting, MS LGI, 7 p.m. JES PTO meeting, Library, 6:30 p.m. JES Book Fair (through Sept. 30) Senior Class photo, 8 a.m. Sabre City Dance Grades 5-6, 7-9 p.m. MS PTO meeting, Library, 6:30 p.m. "Race Back To School" 5K, registration 9-9:45 a.m., race starts at 10 a.m. 202122 23242526 JES Fall Fundraiser (through Oct. 5) Yom Kippur Eid-al-Adha MS Picture Day JES Grades 2-4 Open House, 6 p.m. (begins at sundown) (begins at sundown) MS Back-to-School Night, 6:30 p.m. Staff Development Day MS PTO Bake Sale JES Grades K-1 Open House, 6 p.m. Fall Begins 27282930 Sukkot (begins at sundown) Board of Education meeting, MS LGI, 7 p.m. NO SCHOOL Abbreviations: DO - District Office JES - Jefferson Elementary School HS - High School MS - Middle School LGI - Large Group Instruction DFS - Dollars for Scholars SAA - Schalmont Athletic Association W W W . The holiday season is a particularly special time of year when students, teachers and staff come together to raise spirits and help friends and neighbors with school-sponsored giving trees, food drives, toy and clothing collections, caroling and so much more. Schalmont spreads holiday cheer in the community • For more than 35 years, Schalmont has hosted a special "Lunch with Santa" event that brings together friends, neighbors, grandparents and others in the community. The event is held at Jefferson, in conjunction with the school PTO's craft fair, and allows children to deliver their wish lists in "Schalmont is a tight-knit community where everyone cares about each other." —Marie Drislane, Second Grade Teacher, Jefferson Elementary School person and have their picture taken with Santa. Technology highlights • The Class of 2019 will be the first incoming freshman class to receive Chromebooks they will keep for the duration of their high school careers. • Teachers have district-provided laptops along with professional development opportunities focused on using instructional technology. • With the adoption of a new “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) policy, high school students now have the opportunity to begin using their favorite technologies at school. The initiative will be rolled out to other school buildings in the future. Posters, videos, discussions, assemblies and recognition programs are among the many activities designed collaboratively to achieve their goal.
