I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. I delight in your decrees; I will not neglect your word. ~ Psalm 119:15-16 T he story goes that the great entrepreneur Henry Ford once hired an efficiency expert to evaluate his company. This man came into his factories and offices to assess the efficiency level of the workers. After a few weeks, the expert made his report, which was highly favorable except for one thing. “It’s that man down the hall,” said the expert. “Every time I go by his office he’s just sitting there with his feet on his desk. He’s wasting your money!” Mr. Ford replied, “That man once had an idea that saved us millions of dollars. At the time, I believe his feet were planted right where they are now. He’s staying put!” In today’s world, our society measures effectiveness by task completion. If you get all your tasks done in a day that were on your list, then the day was productive. But if you’ve fallen short of your task list, then the day was unproductive. It rarely matters what else you accomplished. You’re measured on your tasks. But think of all the great ideas that have come about very likely because someone just stopped to think. Albert Einstein… Ben Franklin… Leonardo da Vinci… all of these great minds spent significant time simply thinking! There’s nothing wrong with tasks, but don’t let them run your life. Spend daily time meditating on God and His truth because that’s the path to truly finding wisdom! Pray that God would release you from letting tasks overtake your life. Ask Him to speak to you as you spend quiet time meditating on Him. Patriotic Quotes Those who deny freedom to others deserve it not for themselves. ~ Abraham Lincoln And I’m proud to be an American where at least I know I’m free. And I won’t forget the men who died, who gave that right to me. ~ Lee Greenwood My God! How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of, and which no other people on earth enjoy! ~Thomas Jefferson We on this continent should never forget that men first crossed the Atlantic not to find soil for their ploughs but to secure liberty for their souls. ~Robert J. McCracken It is easy to take liberty for granted, when you have never had it taken from you. ~Author unknown 4655 North Victoria Street, Shoreview MN 55126 www.summerhouseshorview.org SHOREVIEW NEWS WELLNESS ZONE S unny days uplift spirits. But seniors need to take special precautions to make sure their enjoyment of summer is not eclipsed by the pain of sunburn or the harmful effects of dehydration and heat illness. Physical changes that come with aging make older adults more vulnerable to summer’s heat and humidity. Seniors become less sensitive to heat and the feeling of thirst as they age. And on top of that, certain medical conditions, such as heart disease, and medications commonly taken by seniors— water pills, allergy and sinus medications, and antidepressants—further increase the risk. The Foundation for Health in Aging (FHIA) warns that temperatures in the low 90s can be very dangerous to seniors and offers seniors and their caregivers a wide variety of hot weather safety tips. Recommendations include: Turn on the air conditioner Stay indoors during excessive heat Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing Avoid strenuous activity Take cool showers or sponge baths FHIA also recommends that family members check on seniors at least twice a day during a heat wave. L ife insurance is an asset you may not think of donating to Presbyterian Homes Foundation until you hear how powerful, practical and simple it can be. How It Works When you own a life insurance policy with accumulated cash value, you're essentially sitting on a large sum of money. When the original purpose for the protection no longer applies—such as to educate children now grown or to provide financial security for a spouse now deceased—your life insurance can be redirected to help support a worthwhile cause. One option is simply to name Presbyterian Homes Foundation as the primary beneficiary. (Naming PHS as beneficiary while you retain ownership of the policy, however, does not qualify you for an income tax deduction.) Or, you can name PHS as the beneficiary and also assign us ownership of the policy as a current charitable gift. Doing so may provide you tax benefits as well. Three yes/no questions can help you decide if using life insurance to support the PHS mission is right for you. If you can answer yes to each of the following questions, you may find that donating an existing life insurance policy makes sense for you. If not, we can help you find an option that's a better fit. 1. Do you have a life insurance policy that no longer fits the need for which it was originally intended? 2. Would you like to receive tax benefits from your gift this year? 3. Would you like to support your PHS community? If you think that a gift of life insurance might be right for you, or you want to talk about other options for supporting our work, please contact us at 651-765-4004 or email kosterman@preshomes.org Call today for information or to schedule a personal tour, 651-765-3900 PRESBYTERIAN HOMES & SERVICES NEWS Building up, reaching out: New project updates Johanna Shores, Arden Hills, MN, marked a milestone in November 2012 as residents moved into the first phase of senior apartments, assisted living and memory care.
