2 From the President: March 1, 2011 Dear fellow horse enthusiast: Thank you for picking up this copy of our 2011 Montana Farm Bureau Equine Directory. This is the seventh year we’ve published this helpful booklet with a variety of equine services, along with a comprehensive calendar, educational articles and advertisements. Please support the folks who advertise—and list—in this directory. It shows that they care about the equine industry in Montana. As a Quarter Horse breeder, it’s so rewarding to see a new crop of energetic colts in pastures all across the state. We should be very proud of our horses in this state. Several years ago I founded the Equine Boosters of MSU and their “Donate a Horse” program for the Montana State University Equine Sciences program which gives students in the MSU colt breaking and training class a “hands-on” opportunities to learn the science, economics and skills needed to train and market horses. The horses the students have worked with for an entire year are then consigned for sale, along with outside performance horses. This year’s sale, on May 7, is going to be especially exciting. We have the Equine Boosters of MSU Top of the West Performance Horse Sale and Derby Day Celebration at the beautiful Copper Spring Ranch near Bozeman. By purchasing a horse at this sale, you support the Equine Boosters of MSU and the MSU Equine Science program. Come on over and check out the amazing work these students have done with their class horses—you may find your perfect horse to buy and take home. Oh, and enjoy the Kentucky Derby festivities! This sale is just one small example of how horses are important to the economy of Montana. Agriculture is the state’s number one industry and horses are part of that. Montana Farm Bureau has an equine committee made up of ranchers, breeders, leasing and recreational operators, and people who show—basically every portion of this diverse industry. MFBF keeps an eye on Montana Legislature and the U.S. Congress to ensure the interest of horse owners are protected, including issues like grazing management, water rights, property rights, and animal care issues—all of which affect you, the horse owner. As part of our responsibilities as the state’s largest agriculture organization, MFBF has taken the reins in uniting and representing this ever-growing segment of the agriculture industry. How do you help? Join our organization if you are not already a member (or upgrade to Century Club Membership) and encourage all of your friends who enjoy horses to do the same. The Montana Department of Livestock (MDOL) is currently taking brand rerecords. The good news is the fee to renew is $100 per brand, same as it was in 2001. What is new this year is the opportunity to rerecord without leaving the comfort of your home. You can now renew your brand online. In fact, MDOL is encouraging people to take advantage of this great new service, saying “10 minutes for 10 years: New service offers convenience, speed.” That’s exactly the report the Executive Officer of MDOL, Christian Mackay, is hearing from online re-recorders. Another is the grace period for late rerecords. Brands that are not re-registered by December 31, 2011, will be held for a 90-day period in which only the holder may reapply for the brand. After that, brands which are not renewed will be vacated and made available to the public. “Brands are a big part of the state’s history. It’s something people take seriously, and there’s some colorful history about rustlers who tried to beat the system and found the business end of a rope. It’s a system that’s worked well for 150 years, and it still works today,” said John Grainger, MDOL Brands Division administrator. If you have not received your notice please contact MDOL. To update, visit rerecord.mt.gov, call the Rerecord Hotline at (406) 444-4999, or visit a brand office for a mail-in card. 31 Saddles Grow on Trees By Rebecca Colnar Although Swanke says theoretically a saddle takes two weeks to build, he’s usually working on several saddles at once. “When I wet the leather, I like to give it a couple of days to dry so I can work on it. A lot can be gained by making sure your leather is the right moisture. If you handle leather when it’s too wet, your saddle will look messy. It’s easiest to work with leather when it is just a little bit damp. It takes about three or four days to do the ground seat,” he says. To find out about building a Western saddle, MFBF Equine Director/Editor Rebecca Colnar visited Swanke Saddlery in Billings, MT. Ben Swanke is a top-notch saddle maker, constructing the fundamental saddle tree as well as building beautiful saddles. In this article, Swanke shares basic information on saddle making. Step One: “The first step to building a saddle is for the customer to decide on a tree,” notes Swanke. The tree, which is at its most basic, is built out of wood and covered with rawhide. This serves as the base of the saddle. After deciding on the style of tree, the customer must decide on the rigging, skirts, stirrup leathers and fenders. “Have a plan before you start,” he advises. Step Two: The next step is to cut out the pieces from leather. Considerable thought is given to making patterns that create an eye-pleasing saddle that is durable and functional. At this stage, it’s not an exact fit, but it gives me a good idea how the rigging will fit on the saddle. It’s after that I actually start cutting the leather for the rigging. The leather needs to be dampened, and I tack it on temporarily and redraw it to fit the tree.” Step Three: Next is the ground seat, “The ground seat is a buildup of leather on the tree, so where you sit is smooth and comfortable,” Swanke explains. “I laminate layers of leather together, each layer being shaved to blend with the fork and cantle to achieve a smooth, correct seat for the best feel and position. The ground seat is very important. It needs to be comfortable, and it can really make a saddle look very good.” Step Four: After the ground seat is established, next the fork cover is formed, then the skirts. “The skirts might be plain or tooled, but first I tack them on to see how they fit. Then I remove them and start tooling damp leather,” Swanke says. 32 Step Five: Next comes a very important part of the saddle for your horse—blocking the skirts to fit the saddle bars underneath. The skirts become a molded piece that allows the tree to fit the horses back like it is meant to. This also makes a more beautiful transition from back housings to the skirts with no gaps. Step Six: The seat leather is fitted on next. “The seat leather is the finished piece. It’s what looks good, but it’s like the hood on a car. That car can’t go anywhere if there isn’t an engine under the hood. In this case, the ground seat is the ‘engine’ of the saddle,” Swanke explains. Step Seven: “Once the seat leather is done, you need to drill holes for the saddle strings which go through the seat, tree and skirts. Next, I take the dry skirts off and glue and sew the sheepskin on,” the saddle maker notes. Step Eight: "Over the next two or three days, I fasten the rigging to the tree with screws, cover the back of the cantle with leather, glue the seat leather on permanently and then finish off the leather around the cantle by sewing on the cantle binding,” Swanke says. Leather care tips Q Don’t keep your saddle in a hot tack shed. Q Don’t dry your saddle next to a heater when it’s really wet. Step Nine: The skirts are then held in place with saddle strings and screws. At this point I will fit the back housing— the leather that covers the exposed parts of the tree at the back end of the saddle. Step Ten: The fenders and the stirrup leathers are put together and put on the tree. And those final touches—the conchos, latigos, back cinch and stirrups. Voila! You are ready to ride. 33 Q Do use a light coating of pure Neatsfoot Oil when the saddle is about 98 percent dry. Q Do brush off mud once the saddle dries. Q Do lightly oil your saddle at least annually. cutting TLC Ranch & CowHorse.com Kalispell, MT 59904 (406) 756-1500 tlcranch@centurytel.net www.cowhorse.com Specialize in cutting and reining horses and, also, equine facility design, planning, and sales. Current students do not have a reasonable, safe, healthy or modern laboratory in which to learn critical, practical and applicable skills which the equine industry requires. The proposed live animal horse laboratory will be used to educate students about all aspects of equine reproduction, management, nutrition, anatomy and disease via hands-on experiences. The facility will be used to carry out applied research which can be used as an educational and training tool for graduate and undergraduate students and to educate Montana horse producers, guest ranch managers, hunting outfitters and pleasure horse owners. The hands-on learning center can also be used for outreach programs to provide educational opportunities for social horse groups and youth organizations such as 4-H and Pony Club. Supporters of the MSU Equine Science program are seeking funding to build a 3000 square foot laboratory and barn with two adjacent 2000 square foot pipe rail corrals. How individuals and businesses can help: 1. Spread the word about the proposed equine learning center. 2. Donate time to assist with fund raising efforts. 3. Financial donation. 4. Construction services donation. 5. Building materials donation. 6. Urge university administrators to support the project and match donations. Although Mother Nature prepares livestock pretty well for the cold and snow, there are a few things you can do to keep your horse comfortable and healthy during the winter months. Provide clean water It’s important to ensure your horse has access to clean water. Access to fresh water is critical to keep the animal’s kidneys and digestive system functioning. “Many colic cases I see are due to horses that are not drinking enough water,” notes Betsy Bialon, D.V.M., Sugar Factory Veterinary Clinic and Big Horn County Farm Bureau member. “This is particularly true when the weather is just starting to get cold and owners are perhaps not accustomed to checking waterers every day.” Dr. Bialon says although a horse might (and the word is “might”) survive by eating snow in the winter (and only if they’re on pasturage only), it’s not at all advisable. “When you feed hay (which most horses need to have in the winter) the need for water increases exponentially so the forage can be digested. If the animal doesn’t have enough water, its digestive system becomes impacted which then leads to colic.” Horse owners probably don’t need to be reminded that colic is the number-one killer of horses. To blanket or not to blanket? “Not all horses need to be blanketed when it's cold out,” Dr. Bialon says. “Most horses grow a thick winter hair coat that will keep them warm. Horses do need to be blanketed if they are slicked off and have no winter coat. This includes show horses that have been clipped and horses that arrive in the middle of the winter from the South.” Horse owners may want to blanket older horses in bitter cold weather, and blanket horses that are riding in partially opened trailers when it’s cold, wet and windy. One important rule is not to leave blankets on horses when the weather warms up. Horses have more trouble with overheating than being too cold. The most important way to help keep your horse warm during the winter is to provide windbreaks, Bialon says. “Whether they’re blanketed or not, shelter from the wind is critical in keeping your horse comfortable.” 38 Deworming in winter Do you need to deworm your horse in the winter? “Deworming strategies have changed dramatically in the last few years as parasite resistance has increased in some areas of the country,” notes Bialon. “The latest recommendations are aimed at identifying which horses in your herd are carrying the largest parasite burdens. Horses have varying immunity to parasites. The horses that have the lowest immunity tend to carry and shed the parasites that infect other horses. These horses that are carrying and shedding more parasites need to be dewormed more frequently.” Bialon says that deworming protocols are dependent on the climate and area in which you live. “If the ground in your area stays frozen all winter, you can get away with not deworming most of your horses—that is the horse with low parasite burdens—over the winter.” Preventing snowballing No horse owner likes to find their horses tip-toeing around on “snowballs” in their feet, but it’s a difficult problem to solve. One helpful strategy is to pull the shoes. Horses with shoes tend to get higher, more frozen ‘snowballs.’ There’s the rumor that using a non-stick spray on the bottom of the hooves will keep snowballs at bay, but anyone who has tried this has not found it particularly helpful. It’s even debatable whether pads work or not. Bialon says she has not found a good way to prevent snowballs from forming on her horses’ feet. “They certainly can become an issue as a horse can sustain injuries as a result of the snowballs,” she says. “The most common injury I see is bruising and eventual abscess formation.” 39 Feeding Horses . . . Easier Than You Think By Lu Garnas Leeann "Lu" Garnas is a top level certified equine sports massage therapist specializing in rehabilitating horses post-trauma as well as maintaining performance horses. She works on pleasure ponies, high-end hunter/jumpers, and dressage horses, travelling to shows and training barns throughout the Pacific Northwest. With years of experience massaging horses in the Gallatin Valley, in 2009 Lu received additional certification in Equine Acupressure. After successfully passing her National Certification test, she is the only Nationally Certified Equine Acupressure practitioner with additional education in Tendon & Ligament issues and Tui Na (2011) in Montana. With rehabilitation comes nutrition questions, so further education was completed in basic nutritional needs and herbal treatment options. Lu is also a Natural Barefoot trimmer facilitating hoof performance through the hoof. Feeding horses, in general, should be a simple endeavor. They are herbivores that graze in the wild and seem to do just fine. Unfortunately, or fortunately, there have been many advances in understanding equine nutritional needs, leaving the owner to wade through all the information alone. With so many new supplements and products coming on the market daily, it is difficult not to feel as though you are somehow missing a huge component in your horse’s health if you are NOT feeding something extra. There is a simpler way of viewing equine nutrition, barring any specific condition diagnosed by your veterinarian. Good nutrition for your horse, from a performance, reining horse, or favorite pack horse, starts with the forage. Forage should make up at least 70% of the diet (except in a few cases). Forage is the most important part of your feed regimen. Therefore, it is imperative to have your forage tested on an annual basis, be it hay or pasture. (Contact your local feed store for more information on forage testing). Any excesses or deficiencies present in the diet starts there. You can save money on supplements by knowing exactly what you need to add in or remove after receiving your results. Basic forage requirements are to feed between 1.5 – 2.0% of bodyweight per day. Weigh out a hay flake to get an approximate idea of its size and feed accordingly. For instance, a 1,000 pound horse should get between 15 and 20 pounds of forage per day depending on quality and type of forage and workload. Access to salt and fresh water, obviously, is important as well. What is usually neglected is mineral. Mineral deficiencies can lead to many health issues; brittle feet, lack of muscle tone, skin and coat irregularities. Excesses can lead to toxicities that can hinder nutrient absorption, decrease muscle function, or even death. After reviewing your forage results, a mineral package may be required for optimal health levels. Personal preference will determine if you choose loose mineral or a mineral block. Realize that a trace mineral block is 98% salt, with a “trace” of mineral. In general, optimal mineral requirements cannot be completely met through the use of trace mineral blocks alone. 40 Grains: Here is where the confusion grows; to grain or not to grain? The true test of a wise horse owner is the truthfulness of how he answers the following question: What is the actual, realistic workload of my animal? Depending on the answer to that question, grain may or may not be necessary. Grain is normally fed for additional energy requirements. Your average equine pasture pal’s energy requirements are very low as their work load is low. Add in use during hunting season, this horse may require added energy to stay warm and carry out whatever trophy you acquire. Put the same horse in training to become a Grand Prix Jumper or award-winning Cutter, his energy requirements go through the roof when compared to his life in the pasture. Complete feeds contain mineral packages and must be fed by weight dependent on actual work load to guarantee mineral levels and digestible energy requirements are met. Plain grains also have digestible energy and minerals but normally require additional supplementation to meet specific dietary needs. Regardless of what you choose to feed, if you are not feeding it to the weight and exercise demands of the horse, you are most likely not utilizing your feed sources efficiently. Calculate all feeds by weight, not by the size of your coffee can, and weight tape the horse too. Most feeds will tell you to feed x-amount of pounds per 100# of bodyweight.Your goal is to feed to the desired weight of the horse, perhaps not its actual weight at the present. More often than not, our horses receive too much food instead of too little, which can be just as or even more harmful than beneficial. If you weigh out their grain once, make a mark on your scoop or can, and you are done. This way, if someone else is feeding while you are on vacation, you ensure your horse gets consistent digestible energy daily which, in perspective, can be up to a 35% difference! And that can make quite a visible difference in the appearance of your horse. Be fair, but be realistic. Let your horse be your guide.
