Welcome to March Madness
March 24, 2016
Dear Attendees and Participants,
Welcome to the 2016 Alaska School Activities Association March
Madness 3A and 4A Alaska State Basketball Championships!
This tournament creates a wonderful platform for young athletes from
all around the state to showcase their skills, practice team work, and
enjoy some friendly competition. I am sure everyone has worked very
hard to get here, and I appreciate the principles of teamwork and
sportsmanship that are promoted in team sports. I encourage each of
the athletes to carry those ideals into their daily lives and set a high
standard for their peers.
I have fond memories of playing in state basketball tournaments as a
Valdez Buccaneer while in high school. This year’s tournament is sure to be an enjoyable event that
you will remember for many years as well, and I wish each team the best for a successful,
memorable, and safe competition.
Sincerely,
Bill Walker
Governor
On behalf of the Alaska School Activities Association Board
of Directors and ASAA’s corporate partners, welcome to the 2016
First National Bank Alaska State High School March Madness
Basketball Championships!
Student-athletes, we applaud your dedication to doing your
best for yourself and for your school. Coaches, counselors and
parents, thank you for continuing to support interscholastic sports
and activities. And, to the spectators, we appreciate your being
part of this statewide championship event.

3A/4A Honorary Chair
Phil Jordan
Coach Jordan, who coached
in Alaska for 40 years, holds
the unique accomplishment in
Alaska as being the only coach
to win three state championships at three different schools in
two different divisions. His first
came at Service High School
in 1991. It was the first conference, region, and state championships in the school’s history.
His second came in 1996 at Bartlett High School. The same
year the Golden Bears pulled off a Championship in the
Great Florida Shootout in which they had to beat Tift County
High School from Georgia who ended up being the 4th
ranked team in the country. His third and final championship
came at the 2A level at Lumen Christi. Once again, it was
the first conference, region, and state championships in the
school’s history.
Coach Jordan came to Alaska after being an All-League,
All County, All CIF (California Interscholastic Federation)
high school player and an All-Conference player at Orange
4
2016 March Madness Alaska High School Basketball Championships
Coast College. He came to Alaska to play at the University
of Alaska Fairbanks where he was twice voted team MVP. He
started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Lathrop
High School in Fairbanks. He then went on to become the
first head coach at Tri Valley High school where in the first
year the team went on to finish 4th in the state. From there
Phil moved on to Coach at Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka,
Alaska and led them to their first two, and only, conference
championships. He then coached at Mt. Edgecumbe High
school for two years before heading to Anchorage. Coach
Jordan has also coached the Service Girls’ Team and came
back for another stint coaching the Service boys to a 4th
place finish at the state tournament. His last job, which he
enjoyed immeasurably, was to coach the Service “C” team
for three years in which he was more satisfied that the players were receptive to learning the fundamentals of basketball
than the 81% winning record. Coach Jordan currently works
at the University of Alaska Anchorage where he has been
teaching Psychology for the past 10 years. Coach Jordan
is happily married to his wife Eileen, who he thanks for
patiently supporting him through his long coaching journey.
He has two successful children Matt and Molly and two
wonderful grandchildren Wes and Myles.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR:
MADISON AKERS, HOMER
By JEREMIAH BARTZ
Frontiersman.com
Just as a mariner on the sea needs an
engine to power their craft, the Homer girls
basketball program needs Madison Akers
to drive them on the floor.
“We go as she goes,” Homer head coach
Chad Felice said recently.
Past Coaches of the Year:
And it’s good for the Mariners that Akers
has that drive.

FIRST TEAM:
Madison Akers,
Homer
“She has a motor that doesn’t quit,” Felice
said. “She plays around 30 minutes a game
for me.”
Akers has helped Mariners establish
themselves as one of the top girls basketball teams at the 3A level this year. Akers
has also been recognized as the best at
her level. Akers has been named the MGJ
Building Group/Alaska Association of
Basketball Coaches 3A Girls Player of the
Year.
Standing 5-foot-10, Akers plays all over
the floor for the Mariners, Felice said. The
Homer head coach likened Akers to a point
forward. Akers routinely brings the ball up
the floor for Homer. She always guards the
opponent’s best player.
“She sets the tempo for us,” Felice said.
With her height and wingspan, Felice said
Akers has been a great scorer and rebound-
2016 March Madness Alaska High School Basketball Championships
er for the Mariners, a difficult player to
guard and a tough match for the opponents
when Homer’s on the defensive end of the
floor.
But her talents go beyond athleticism,
Felice said.
“Her leadership is just phenomenal,” Felice
said. “She’s always positive and upbeat.
She’s great with the young girls, and her
leadership on the floor in unbelievable.”
Felice said the positive attitude Akers has
is infectious.
“She tries to get everybody in the game
and (the other players) feed off that,”
Felice said. “She’s a pretty good passer too.
She’s always finding the open player. She’s
not afraid to give up a good shot for a great
shot for one of her teammates.”
With her all-around game, Akers is averaging 19 points, 10 rebounds and five steals
per game.

Barrow sophomores earn
national recognition
Early in the season, as the Barrow Whalers hit the
court to play the host Warriors during the annual
Doc Larson’s Roundball Classic at Wasilla High, the
number of fans in attendance donning Barrow blue
could rival those in WHS red. The roars from the
Whalers fans steadily filled the Wasilla gymnasium
with sound.

FIRST TEAM:
Kamaka Hepa,
Barrow
Fans certainly take pride in the Whalers, the 2015
3A state champions. But for at least a few of the
Whalers, their celebrity status has extended far past
Alaska’s northernmost town.
Barrow sophomores Kamaka Hepa and Travis Adams are now nationally known. Hepa is a nationallyranked talent on the hardwood, and Adams, also
a Barrow football standout, was a player featured
prominently on a television series about Whaler
football seen on the NFL Network.
Both can add another honor to their list of achievements. Hepa has been named the MGJ Building
Group/Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches 3A
Boys Player of the Year. Hepa and Adams have also
both been named first-team all-state.
Barrow head coach Jeremy Arnhart said his players
have handled the attention well.
“They have a good head on their shoulders. They’re
pretty smart kids,” Arnhart said earlier this season.
“The thing with them and the notoriety, they go out
and compete in the summer. We do a lot of team
camps. They go out with the best of the best in the
2016 March Madness Alaska High School Basketball Championships
nation. They see
the level they
need to be at,
and the work.”
Hepa is a
nationally recognized talent,
ranked No. 21
on the ESPN.
com list of top
boys’ basketball players in the class of 2018. He was
a first-team all-state selection as a freshman, and is
already receiving offers from Division I programs
across the country.
An ESPN writer, in a piece published in September
of 2015, called Hepa Alaska’s best product since
Bartlett graduate Mario Chalmers, who won a
national title at Kansas and multiple NBA titles with
the Miami Heat.
“Kamaka, you could see him one time in the NBA.
He’s definitely going to be a big time Division I
player. A lot of people want him,” Arnhart said.
In just two seasons with the Whalers, Hepa has
already amassed nearly 1,000 total points. As of
March 8, Hepa had 928 total points. This season,
Hepa is averaging 19.3 points and 12.2 rebounds,
3.4 blocks, 3.0 assists and 2.1 steals per game.
Adams is averaging 16.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.8
assists and 2.4 steals per game.
Barrow is 46-7 since the duo entered the program
and freshman, and the pair helped Barrow win the
2015 3A state title.

COACH OF THE YEAR:
JIM YOUNG, DIMOND
West Valley star earns top honor
for second straight year
By JEREMIAH BARTZ
Frontiersman.com
West Valley head coach Jessie Craig calls
Ruthy Hebard the “Pied Piper”.
“All these little girls are always following
her around. They want to be just like her,”
Craig said recently of Hebard, West Valley’s
girls basketball star.
In Fairbanks, a town that boasts a university with Division I hockey and Division
II basketball, Hebard is as recognized as
any athlete currently competing in “The
Golden Heart City.” Hebard is a nationally
known prospect, ranked in the top 10 of her
class at her position by ESPN.com. She has
inked her National Letter of Intent with the
University of Oregon, and will play for the
Division I Ducks in the fall.
Hebard was recently named the MGJ Building Group/Alaska Association of Basketball
Coaches 4A Girls Player of the Year. It’s the
second straight year in which Hebard has
received the association’s top honor.
As senior, Hebard is averaging 25.6 points,
14.8 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 2.2 blocks per
game. She also boasts career averages of 20
points and 14 rebounds per game.
Hebard’s senior season has included a
number of incredible moments. She pulled
down a school-record 32 rebounds during a
win over rival Lathrop. In February, Hebard
eclipsed 2,000 career points during a victory
over Service.
Hebard, one of Alaska’s most decorated
high school talents in any sport, is already
listed among the girls basketball greats
2016 March Madness Alaska High School Basketball Championships
that the Last
Frontier has
produced. As
impressive as
her talents and
statistics are,
Craig said,
what really
stands out is
how Hebard
has handled
her success
throughout her
stellar career.
“She does it as
a team player. She does it in a humble way.
Her team feels like a part of what she does,”
Craig said.
Craig said Hebard hasn’t allowed all of the
attention to alter character or attitude.
“Across the board she has a humble attitude.
I think that’s what makes her so successful,”
Craig said. “She doesn’t have that cocky
attitude. If a teammate is more open, she’s
willing to give it up.”
Craig said Hebard has a unique combination
of assets, a very coachable player blessed
with tremendous skill and athletic talent.
That combination will help her succeed at
the next level, Craig said.
“She just keeps getting better and better,
“ Craig said. “It’s going to be exciting to
watch her play at Oregon.
“I can’t emphasize enough what a great
person she is. She’s just a great kid.”

Unforgettable moment a highlight
in West Valley senior’s season
By JEREMIAH BARTZ
Frontiersman.com
Alaska basketball fans have watched West Valley
standout Daniel Hornbuckle dazzle throughout his
high school career. But as a senior, Hornbuckle
drew national attention.
With his team trailing Colony 63-60 late in a firstround game of the O’Brady’s Invitational at South
Anchorage High School, Hornbuckle scored an improbable five points during the final five seconds of
the game to lead West Valley to the 65-63 win over
the Knights.
With about 10 seconds left in the game, Hornbuckle
went the length of the floor and hit a three-pointer
that tied the game at 63. With about five seconds
left, Hornbuckle stole the ensuing inbound pass, and
knocked down a fade-away jumper at the baseline
at the buzzer to give the Wolfpack the win. A video
of the finish posted on Twitter was picked up by national blogs, including Sports Illustrated’s Campus
Rush.
“You never want to be on the Sports Illustrated
Twitter blog as the team that happens to. But coaching as long as I have now, I know you’re doing to
run into that moment where something like that happens. Daniel did a great job of doing what Daniel
does,” Colony head coach Tom Berg said later that
weekend.
Fast forward two months,
and that moment still resonates with the Wolfpack.
“I think it will go down in the history of memories,”
West Valley head coach Cornelius Mingo said recently. “We’ll be talking about it for a long time. It’s
not often a kids scores five points with 4.3 seconds
left in the game.”
2016 March Madness Alaska High School Basketball Championships
Hornbuckle’s heroics against the
Knights
don’t
represent the only
highlights of a stellar prep career. But
they are a great example of the type of
talent Hornbuckle
is, Mingo said.
It also represents
one of the reasons
why Hornbuckle
is part of the firstteam of the MGJ Building Group/Alaska Association of Basketball Coaches 4A Boys All-State Team.
“He’s really special,” Mingo said.
During the regular season, Hornbuckle averaged 28
points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals
per game as a senior. As impressive as those statistics are, Mingo said there is one thing about Hornbuckle that really stands out.
“What’s most impressive to me is his work ethic,”
Mingo said.
Mingo said spectators see what Hornbuckle can do
on the court, but don’t see the work he puts in behind the scenes.
“Hours and hours and hours,” Mingo said of the
5-foot-11 guard. “It rubs off on the rest of the team.”
Mingo said Hornbuckle intends on playing college basketball, but has yet to announce where. But
wherever Hornbuckle goes, Mingo expects great
things for Hornbuckle, who also excels in the classroom with a 4.0 grade point average.
