FALL 2008: August 29 – October 30, 2008 SPECIAL ENGAGEMENTS & PREMIERES Friday, August 29 – Thursday, September 4 Friday, September 26 – Tuesday, September 30 New Restoration! Exclusive Area Premiere! ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST BEAUTIFUL LOSERS at 4:30, 8:00pm (+ Sat, Sun and Mon at 1:00); Please Note: Wed 9/3 at 8pm only (1968) dir Sergio Leone w/Henry Fonda, Claudia Cardinale, Jason Robards, Charles Bronson; story by Leone, Bernardo Bertolucci, and Dario Argento [165 min] This apex of the Spaghetti Western just keeps getting better with NEW age. It has taken it 40 years to truly get the respect that it deserves. 35MM Unfavorably compared to Leone’s admittedly brilliant ‘Man With No trilogy at its release and saddled with cuts by its US distribuPRINT! Name’ tor, it has taken it this long to be appreciated as a masterpiece, but it was SO worth the wait. Presented here in a brand new restoration to its original ‘international’ length (still several minutes shorter than its Italian running time), ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST is truly a gem to be savored. Leone takes his time telling the tale of four intersecting fates in a soon-to-be railroad boomtown. Henry Fonda is cast against type as the exceedingly ruthless villain, Frank. Bronson enjoys taking over the spotlight from Clint as the wandering, nameless gunslinger ‘Harmonica.’ And Cardinale and Robards are superb as the mismatched widow-in-danger and her n’er-do-well protector. The real stars, however, are Leone’s bravura mise-en-scene and Ennio Morricone’s gripping score. “Right from the opening sequence – a quintet for three gunslingers, a fly, and a creaking windmill – it's clear we're being told a story whose familiar elements will appear in a new way: the gunmen are photographed either in long shot or in extreme close-up, the enormous 'Scope screen overflows with giant images of a gun barrel, an eyeball, or… a fly!” – Peter Scarlet, Tribeca Film Festival Fri, Sat & Mon at 9:30; Sun & Tue at 1:30, 3:30, 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (2008) dirs Aaron Rose and Joshua Leonard w/Rose, Barry McGee, Chris Johanson, Ed Templeton, Geoff McFetridge, Harmony Korine, Jo Jackson, Margaret Killgallen, Mike Mills, Deanna Templeton, Stephen Powers, Thomas Campbell, Shepard Fairey, Cheryl Dunn [90 min] In the 1990s a loosely organized group of forward thinking artists gathered around New York City’s Alleged Gallery. Inspired by street culture, hiphop, graffiti, skateboarding, indie-rock and a DIY aesthetic, this group has gone on to influence much of the art hitting galleries and museums – not to mention boutiques and cinemas – today. If you’ve ever picked up an issue of Giant Robot, watched Kids, bought clothing designed by Obey, or seen an ‘Andre The Giant Has A Posse’ sticker, you’ve likely been influenced by them too! This documentary depicts, with characteristic playfulness, the various boundary-defying artists, filmmakers, and designers involved in this scene including Harmony Korine, Mike Mills, Margaret Kilgallen, Shepard Fairey, Barry McGee, Ed Templeton, and others. A stated goal of director, and Alleged Gallery owner, Aaron Rose is to have this film inspire those who see it to ‘make something from nothing’ and it does an admirable job of depicting the ups and downs of carving out a life from the art world. Whether negotiating what it means to run a gallery, discussing the ramifications and history of train car graffiti, dealing with the concept of ‘sellingout’, or mourning the death of a close friend, the creativity and abandon with which these artists approach their lives is sure to inspire you in many ways. Friday, September 26 & Saturday, September 27 UNITED NATIONS ASSOCIATION FILM FESTIVAL Join us for a weekend of powerful international documentary films dealing with issues from women in Saudi Arabia to the conflict in Darfur, and from the drug war to conscientious objectors in the war on terror. United Nations Association Film Festival Traveling Festival Boston presents films capturing the lives of people around the world. Friday, September 5 – Thursday, September 18 Repertory Series! HITCHCOCK’S 50S The legendary film director Alfred Hitchcock hit a major stride in the late 1950s. Beginning with small-scale thrillers STAGE FRIGHT and STRANGERS ON A TRAIN and culminating in the one-two-three-punch of his acknowledged masterpieces VERTIGO, NORTH BY NORTHWEST and PSYCHO, the decade saw Hitch play on all of his strengths while developing new techniques and themes. This series provides an opportunity to see the full range of this amazing artist’s prodigious talents in one fell swoop. Don’t miss this chance to experience some of the Twentieth Century’s most intense, complex, and downright entertaining works of film art on the big screen. Please see below for full line-up and schedule. Don't miss this collection of Global Voices presented by United Nations Association of Greater Boston and The Kennedy School New England Alumni Association. Screenings also take place at the Kennedy School on Sept 25 & 28. Directors Present on Opening Night! ON A TIGHTROPE (China/Norway) NISHA (India/Netherlands) at 5:00pm A MINORITY REPORT (Italy/Serbia) SOMETHING OTHER THAN OTHER (USA) at 7:00pm SPECIAL EVENTS & READINGS Friday, October 10 – Monday, October 13 Director’s Cuts! THE COMPLEAT LORD OF THE RINGS Triple Feature! (2001, 2002, 2003) dir Peter Jackson w/Elijah Wood, Sean Astin, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Orlando Bloom, John Rhys-Davies, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Andy Serkis, Sean Bean, Cate Blanchett, Ian Holm, Liv Tyler, Christopher Lee, Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto, David Wenham, Brad Dourif Once considered unfilmably epic, now a legendary cinematic experience, JRR Tolkien’s LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy stands as one of the most influential works of English literature. When a relatively unknown New Zealand filmmaker undertook the labor of love of bringing these classic works to the screen, many thought he was crazy! Now, they know Peter Jackson as a household name and the fruits of his labor won Oscars and record-breaking box office numbers. By now, we can’t imagine too many people don’t know the basic plot, but here it goes: In a sprawling fantasy world known as Middle Earth, an unassuming hobbit is chosen to join a cadre of heroes out to destroy a magic ring that, if it falls into the wrong hands, will spell disaster for the future of everyone. Populated with elves, dwarves, orcs, wizards, walking-and-talking trees, and sundry other magical creatures, Tolkien’s Middle Earth is a finely-crafted and intricately-described place and Jackson does an admirable job translating this daunting work to the screen with a dazzling array of visual effects. Jackson developed most of the technology solely for the purpose of adapting these books – some long before the deal was made to allow him to do it. Many of the actors in the film lobbied hard to get the parts they wanted (star Elijah Wood even went so far as to wear a hobbit costume to one audition) and they truly shine on screen. Join us on the epic journey as we revisit some of the most dazzling filmmaking ever committed to celluloid. THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING [208 min] Fri at 8:00pm; Sat at 4:00pm; Sun at 11:30am “SECRECY, the stylistically elegant and provocative new film by Robb Moss and Peter Galison, explores the hidden world of national security policy by examining the many implications of secrecy, both for government and individuals. Combining animation, installations, a mesmerizing score, and riveting interviews, the film takes us inside the inverted world of government secrecy as we share the experiences of lawyers, CIA analysts, and the ordinary people for whom secrecy becomes a matter of life and death.” – Sundance Film Festival HITCHCOCK’S ‘50S Sponsored By The Harvard Coop Friday, September 5 – Sunday, September 7 50th Anniversary! Vertigo at 7:00 (+ Sat & Sun at 2:00) (1958) dir Alfred Hitchcock w/Jimmy Stuart, Kim Novak, Barbara Bel Geddes [128 min] Fifty years on, VERTIGO has lost none of its power as a gripping thriller, but as we know in our Dr.-Phil-enlightened age, it’s also an exploration of some serious untreated emotional disorders. Stewart doesn’t play against type so much as he burrows into his persona to newfound and frightening depths as a San Francisco detective who finds himself obsessed by (at least) two versions of the seductive Kim Novak. Double Feature! Rear Window at 4:30, 9:30 (1954) dir Hitchcock w/Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly, Raymond Burr, Thelma Ritter [112 min] In this sumptuous, Technicolor masterpiece Jimmy Stewart plays L.B Jefferies, a photographer confined to a wheelchair by a broken leg, who begins to spy on the other tenants in his apartment complex. A hobby born of boredom turns to obsession when Jefferies begins to suspect that he has inadvertently witnessed a murder. With the help of his girlfriend Lisa (Kelly), Jefferies begins to engage in a potentially fatal game of cat and mouse with the maybe-murderer (Burr). REAR WINDOW is an intense meditation on voyeurism and one of Hitchcock’s finest works. Double Feature! The Man Who Knew Too Much Fri & Sat at 4:30, 9:45; Sun at 6:30 (1956) dir Hitchcock w/Jimmy Stewart, Doris Day, Bernard Miles [120 min] Stewart and Day are a perfect American couple on a family trip to Morocco who become accidentally involved in international intrigue when they witness a murder in the marketplace. Their son is subsequently kidnapped and the couple must uncover an assassination plot in order to secure his release. Features the Oscar-winning song “Que Sera Sera” sung by Doris Day, and a playful cameo from composer Bernard Hermann. Monday, September 15 Introduced by Slavoj Zizek Psycho Monday, September 8 & Tuesday, September 9 Stage Fright Mon at 10:00; Tue at 7:15 (1950) dir Hitchcock w/Jane Wyman, Marlene Dietrich, Michael Wilding, Richard Todd [110 min] Hitchcock weaves another take of murder and mystery, where an aspiring young actress (Wyman) shelters a fellow actor (Todd) from the authorities as he is accused of killing his mistress’ husband. He insists that his lover Charlotte (Dietrich) is the real killer and claims his innocence. However, things become complicated with Charlotte fingers Jonathan as the real killer. A classic case of “whodunit”, this film will leave you guessing until the very end. Strangers On A Train Double Feature! Mon at 8:00; Tue at 5:00, 9:30 (1951) dir Hitchcock w/Farley Granger, Robert Walker [101 min] A terrific confluence of talent, STRANGERS ON A TRAIN features an adaptation by Raymond Chandler of a novel by Patricia Highsmith for director Hitchcock. Chandler’s sharp dialogue is front-and-center in this classic tale of two strangers who meet on a train and conspire to “trade” murders to get rid of each other’s human baggage and, supposedly, get off scot-free. Wednesday, Sept 10 & Thursday, Sept 11 The Wrong Man at 7:15 (1956) dir Hitchcock w/Henry Fonda, Vera Miles [105 min] A true story of mistaken identity, Henry Fonda is Manny Balestrero, a man who can’t seem to catch a break. While at a bank attempting to borrow on his wife’s insurance policy, Manny is mistakenly identified as the man who robbed the bank twice before. He is arrested and the film chronicles his incarcertaion and trial. Hitchcock beautifully details the deterioration of not only Manny, but also his wife who slips deeper and deeper into depression, complimenting the horrors of Manny’s imprisonment with her own. I Confess Double Feature! at 5:15, 9:30 (1953) dir Hitchcock w/Montgomery Clift, Anne Baxter, Karl Malden [95 min] A tale filled with murder, blackmail and mistaken identity, Father Logan (Clift) finds himself in the middle of a murder after his caretaker confesses to him that he has killed a man. Because of the nature of the confessional, Logan cannot go to the authorities about the crime. However, they soon come to him but for altogether different reasons. Coincidentally, the man who was killed had been blackmailing Logan’s former girlfriend, a fact which points the finger of the law directly at Father Logan. Logan must battle both the justice system, his religious vows, and the angry public in order to bring the true killer to justice. at 8:00pm (1960) dir Hitchcock w/Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, John Gavin, Martin Balsam [109 min] Released in 1960 Hitchcock’s PSYCHO capped a remarkable decade for the director and set the mood, tone and style for just about every serial killer film since. Unassuming Norman Bates (Perkins) is the proprietor of the roadside Bates Motel where unlucky beauty Marion Crane (Leigh) stops off for the night. What follows is one of the most memorable scenes in any thriller ever – and the rest of the film is nothing to scoff at either. Tuesday, September 16 The Trouble With Harry at 8:00, 10:00 (1955) dir Hitchcock w/Edmund Gwenn, John Forsythe, Shirley Maclaine, Jerry Mathers [99 min] When a corpse is discovered in a peaceful New England town it causes all sorts of havoc… especially when it just won’t stay put. Shot during a spectacularly colorful autumn foliage season, this gorgeous and playful film proves Hitchcock’s facility with comedic as well as thrilling scenarios. HARRY also includes two notable firsts: Shirley Maclaine’s screen debut and Bernard Hermann’s first score Hitchcock. Wednesday, Sept 17 & Thursday, Sept 18 To Catch A Thief Wed at 8:00; Thu at 7:15 (1955) dir Hitchcock w/Cary Grant, Grace Kelly [106 min] Cary Grant plays a retired gentleman burglar living in the South of France who is suddenly suspected of returning to action. With the pressure on from the policiers, Grant must ferret out the real thief while negotiating a budding relationship with a beautiful American (Kelly). Cary, Grace and the French Riviera are all eloquently ravishing and at their peaks in this Technicolor caper. Dial M For Murder Double Feature! Wed at 10:00; Thu at 5:00, 9:30 (1954) dir Hitchcock w/Grace Kelly, Ray Milland [105 min] Grace Kelly’s first film with Hitchcock finds her playing a terrorized wife whose husband tries to kill her by hiring a murderer. Of course, plans go awry and tables are unexpectedly turned. Originally shot in gimmicky 3D, Hitchcock’s consummate talents allow him to surpass the fad and create a film that works in both regular and 3D projection. Juliana Hatfield Doors at 9:30 pm It’s been just about 10 years since the last time the Brattle hosted a performance by Boston’s great alt-rock songstress, Juliana Hatfield, so we’re thrilled to welcome her back for this full band performance in support of her brand new album, How To Walk Away. Saturday, October 18 – Thursday, October 23 The Harvard Stem Cell Institute presents The Accidental Advocate at 7:00pm The Harvard Stem Cell Institute invites you to join them for the Boston screening of "The Accidental Advocate", a film launched at the Impact Film Festival as part of the Democratic and Republican conventions. When Claude Gerstle, a surgeon and athlete, suffers a tragic bicycle accident that leaves him paralyzed from the next down, he and his daughter, Jessica, discover hope in the politicized area of science call stem cells. THE ACCIDENTAL ADVOCATE is a wheelchair odyssey of a father and daughter who track down the thinkers, the politicians, the crusaders and the naysayers in an effort to understand the promise of the science and why a political quagmire is stalling a cure. CAROLE LOMBARD: NO DUMB BLONDE Harvard Book Store and Brattle Film FDN Present Out Of The Book: at 10:00 (1968) dir Dimis Dadiras w/Gisela Dali, Paul Dillon [88 min] From Greece comes this amazing, kinky, violent psychosexual soap opera. When good girl Nadia investigates her sister's death she finds out that sadistic pimp Nick is behind it all so she straps on the leather and whips and beats him at his own game. Full of unspeakable perversions, dark secrets, serious chain-smoking, two-way mirrors, orgies and 40-weight sleaze. There's even an adorable pussycat, who purrs and licks her paws as the worst kinds of depravity unravel in front of her. A rare and compulsively entertaining treat that has wowed audiences since its rediscovery. Rated R; Not Available on Video; Also screens Mon 10/6 Thursday, October 2 In Tribute To Isaac Hayes! TRUCK TURNER at 8:00, 10:00 (1974) dir Jonathan Kaplan w/Isaac Hayes, Nichelle Nichols, Yaphet Kotto, Scatman Cruthers [91 min] If there's a better blaxploitation movie than TRUCK TURNER we haven't found it – and we've looked! The late great Isaac Hayes turns on the charm as a legendary bounty hunter with a short temper. When he takes down a psychopathic pimp named Gator, he inadvertently creates a power vacuum in the Los Angeles prostitution scene. Then Gator's bottom woman Nichelle ("Lt. Uhura") Nichols (who should have gotten the Oscar, seriously) offers Gator's orphaned whores to any mack who can take down Truck Turner. Soon there's an open war in the streets between the wisecracking, beer-guzzling Turner and a coalition of over the top pimps, the most dangerous being Yaphet Kotto's intense Harvard Blue. Every line of dialogue in this movie is suitable for framing. With over 75,000 instances of the N-word, and the most creative use of profanity in movie history. To top it off, there's an Isaac Hayes score and Scatman Crothers as an elderly, but still active, pimp. It just can't get better than this. It can't! Rated R; Also screens Wed 10/8 & Thu 10/9 Friday, October 3 ROLLING THUNDER at 5:30 DON T GO IN THE HOUSE! at 7:30 (1980) dir Joseph Ellison w/Dan Grimaldi [83 min] The crowning jewel of the Don'tsploitation cycle so memorably parodied by Edgar Wright in his Grindhouse trailer. While the title may now carry humorous echoes, it's damn good advice. It's the story of yet another Norman Bates with yet another mother fixation but it departs from convention in one very unusual way… His murder weapon is a flamethrower. If it sounds hopelessly cheesy, hang in there because this movie really smokes. There are several shots in this film that I'd rank with the best the horror genre has ever produced and I can pretty much guarantee that you'll be crying like a little bitch by the end. Rated R Double Feature! at 9:30pm (1972) dir Brad Grinter w/Steve Hawkes, Heather Hughes, Dana Cullivan [86 min] This made-in-Florida poultry-monster extravaganza represents the outer limits of what man can hope to achieve in the arena of bad cinema. Like Michelangelo's frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, we can understand easily enough the means by which the work itself has been accomplished. What we cannot fully comprehend is the genius which pervades every frame of this remarkable piece of crap. Steve Hawkes stars as a sideburned Elvis-look biker with a drug problem who is recruited as a guinea pig by two unscrupulous poultry technicians to eat an experimental turkey of some sort. Not surprisingly, he turns into a giant turkey-headed drug addict with a thirst for blood, blood, and more blood. In between the brutal and hilarious murders are scenes in which the turkey-man gets laid, shoots up, and finds Jesus. Say no to drugs, OK? Wed, October 15 Cambridge Center For Adult Education Presents WICKED SMART Featuring Peter Senge author of The Fifth Discipline at 6:00pm For this edition of CCAE’s WICKED SMART, Peter Senge will speak on “The Necessary Revolution: Creating a Sustainable World.” Peter Senge’s The Fifth Discipline revolutionized our understanding of how organizations learn transform rigid hierarchies into more fluid and dynamic systems. Today a new revolution is underway: Organizations everywhere are leading the change to new strategies and transformative practices that promote a flourishing, sustainable world. Pragmatic and powerful, today’s most innovative leaders know that revolutionary – not incremental – changes in the way we live and work are necessary for their, and our, survival. Hear their stories and get inspired to join the movement. Visit CCAE.ORG to register. at 11:30pm (1972) dir Jess Franco w/Anne Libert, Britt Nichols, Doris Thomas, Karin Field, Cihangir Gaffari [95 min] Nunsploitation's finest hour and a half. The great, misunderstood, but undeniably gifted Jess Franco is the most prolific film-maker of all time (over 200 so far and still cranking them out). And for as long as he's been making movies he has been derided, dismissed and, most of all, ignored by virtually all mainstream critics. But such notables as Fritz Lang, Orson Welles, Pedro Almodovar and Quentin Tarantino have sung his praises and over the past few years his inexpensive and surreal visual aesthetic has gained him many new adherents. Make up your own mind about Franco: genius, hack, or both but by all means don't miss it. It's a visually arresting, delirious kaleidoscope of sex, torture and sacrilege replete with the foxiest nuns you've ever seen, all set to the accompaniment of grossly incongruous screaming psychedelic guitar music. Rated R; Not Available on Video Saturday, October 4 RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP at 8:00 (1967) dir Arthur Dreifuss w/Aldo Ray, Mimsy Farmer [87 min] This hilariously misguided and fun ‘exposé’ of the youth problem is definitely a bad movie but as bad movies go it's sublime. Gorgeous Mimsy Farmer, a walking tornado of virginal innocence and sex appeal if there ever was one, plays the estranged daughter of police captain Aldo Ray. When she falls in with the wrong crowd of hot-rodding, pot smoking kids, there's going to be trouble on the Sunset Strip. This movie is ludicrously old fashioned but it's also strangely vital and exciting. A lot of the credit goes to Mimsy, whose LSD freakout dance sequence is a highlight of human history. If there was a drug that could make life exactly like this movie I would smoke it every day. Featuring The Chocolate Watchband, The Standells and The Enemies. Miss this and you're just stupid! Not Rated; Not Available on Video; Also screens Thu, 10/9 TEENAGE HITCHHIKERS Double Feature! at 10:00 (1975) dir Gerri Sedley w/Chris Jordan, Sandra Cassel, Claire Wilbur, Nikki Lynn, Margaret Whitton [74 min] This is a really top-notch sex comedy, that has some of the best dialogue you'll ever hear and legitimately funny situations. Against all odds, it really IS a movie about teenage hitchhikers, their lives, loves, trials and tribulations. Plus there's a wacky rapist! It's like a good-times intravenous drip. But if you need to be talked into seeing a movie entitled TEENAGE HITCHHIKERS then maybe you need to take a long look at your life and priorities. Just be there, OK? Rated R; Not Available on Video TOYS ARE NOT FOR CHILDREN at 12:00am (1972) dir Stanley Brassloff w/Marcia Forbes [85 min] Here's a movie that takes everybody off guard, even hardened grindhouse vets. It's just impossible to believe that anyone would be sick and depraved enough to make this movie, let alone release it, let alone watch it. So needless to say we consider it a very great honor to present it. It's one of those melodramas where things get worse and worse for the heroine as she gets closer and closer to the source of her odd sexual obsession, in this case, an unhealthy relationship with her toys. As the story develops she spirals farther and farther down into the nightmarish pit of her dark and convoluted fantasy life, losing her job, her husband and her dignity as she becomes a high priced New York prostitute, specializing in kinky roleplay. The ending of this movie is so shattering and unexpected that it leaves audiences completely stunned. I won't spoil it for you but trust me, you want to be there to see it. Rated R Sunday, October 5 ROLLING THUNDER at 5:30 at 6:00pm (tentative) Join us for what is sure to be a particularly lively event. Political pundits from all sides weigh in during a panel discussion preceding a screening of the final U.S. Presidential Debate! $10 tickets available from Harvard Book Store. Please check brattlefilm.org or Harvard.com for final start time. Ticket holders will be given preferential seating for a free, public screening of the debate following the panel. Thursday, October 16 A Political Party Screening! The Candidate at 5:00, 7:15, 9:30 (1972) dir Michael Ritchie w/Robert Redford, Peter Boyle, Melvyn Douglas [110 min] What better way to celebrate the impending U.S. Presidential Elections (and the just completed debates) than to screen this rarely seen gem? Redford is note perfect as a charismatic senatorial candidate in an apparently unwinnable campaign whose integrity is challenged when his fortunes improve. This verité comedy cuts surprisingly close to the reality of a media-driven political world while peppering its Oscar-winning script with satirical zingers. Hauntingly reminiscent of the Kennedy years while eerily prescient about the present, this film is not to be missed in this current politically charged climate. Sunday, October 26 Thu, October 2 SEX DEMONS Boston Asian American Film Festival Closing Night! Santa Mesa at 5:30pm (2008) dir Ron Morales w/Jacob Kiron Shalov [82 min] Following his mother's death, Hector arrives in Manila to live with his grandmother. Unable to speak Tagalog, Hector falls in with a street gang before a photographer takes him under his wing. Haunted by memories of his mother, Hector photographs an anonymous woman when suddenly, these seemingly disconnected lives collide. Some of you may be disappointed by the disappearance of the BOSTON FANTASTIC FILM FESTIVAL, the Brattle’s annual celebration of new genre films, (we know we are!) but fear not… we promise that it will be back and better than ever before too long. Monday, October 6 WILD PUSSYCAT Thursday, October 9 ROLLING THUNDER DEATH LAID AN EGG David Aguillar of The Chocolate Watchband will introduce!!! at 5:30pm at 5:30pm at 7:30pm (1968) dir Giulio Questi w/Gina Lollobrigida, Jean-Louis Trintignant [86min] Underappreciated filmmaker Giulio Questi took the approach, in DEATH LAID AN EGG, of turning the surrealism up to 11 and letting the plot fend for itself. Most of the film takes place within a futuristic industrial chicken production plant. Trintignant (one of the world's most highly respected actors) and Lollobrigida star as the husband and wife proprietors of the plant, who are developing a new form of super-poultry (headless, wingless… a metaphor for the human condition?). Soon Trintignant's hobby of murdering prostitutes threatens to catch up with him and things start getting really, really strange. As weird as it sounds, it's much weirder. The music, camera angles and strangely clashing acting styles build to a kind of hysterical, ridiculous intensity. Seriously recommended. Not Rated; Not Available on Video Double Feature! THE FRIGHTENED WOMAN at 9:30pm (1969) dir Piero Schivazappa w/Dagmar Lassander [108 min] It's movies like this that make me want to pack up my belongings, grow a little bitty mustache, put on a white linen suit and move to Europe. I can pretty much guarantee that you'll never see an S&M soap opera like this rolling out of Hollywood anytime between now and the first extreme snowboarding championship in Hell. Achingly bodacious Dagmar Lassander stars as an ingénue learning the ropes (literally) from satanic Phillipe Leroy, whose whole crib is like Six Flags for perverts. The door into and out of the sex gym is in the shape of a giant vulva between two giant sculpted legs! Now that our whole country seems to be slipping into some kind of Puritan Dark Age, those of us with sex drives need to pick up the slack for the rest of America. Won't you join us in our crusade? Not Rated Tuesday, October 7 DARKER THAN AMBER at 5:30, 7:30, 9:30 (1970) dir Robert Clouse w/Rod Taylor, Suzy Kendall, Theodore Bikel, Jane Russell, William Smith [96 min] In the 60s and 70s a typical newsstand would feature rows of cheap, colorful paperback novels. There were tons of romances both contemporary and gothic for the women. And for the men there was "man-pulp," detective and adventure novels featuring lone-wolf alpha-dog heroes who typically travelled to exotic locations, engaging in fistfights, copulating freely with the green-eyed lovelies and generally avoiding messy entanglements. Man-pulp was eventually usurped by espionage and military techno-thrillers for the few men who still read recreationally. But fortunately for posterity there is one great man-pulp movie, DARKER THAN AMBER, based on the novel by John D. MacDonald. The book is one of the long running and very popular Travis McGee series. McGee was a kind of proto-dropout "knight errant" who lived on a houseboat and could only be coerced into action by the death of a friend, a large sum of money or the pretty persuasion of a miniskirted young lass in trouble. This movie captures the feel of manpulp to a T. You can almost hear the pages turning. With Rod Taylor, Suzy Kendall and, most memorably, biker movie great William Smith who damn near rips Taylor's arm off in the climactic fight scene. This movie so impressed Bruce Lee that he insisted on director Clouse for his American debut Enter The Dragon. Rated PG; Not Available on Video Wednesday, October 8 TRUCK TURNER at 5:30pm RIOT ON SUNSET STRIP at 7:30pm TRUCK TURNER at 9:30pm All descriptions by Lars Nilsen CAROLE LOMBARD: NO DUMB BLONDE Saturday, October 18 & Thursday, October 23 My Man Godfrey Sat at 1:00, 3:00; Thu at 8:00, 10:00 (1936) dir Gregory La Cava w/Carole Lombard, William Powell, Alice Brady [94 min] Lombard is practically the definition of a ‘ditzy blonde’ as a madcap member of a rich and eccentric family who claims a hobo as an item in a scavenger hunt. Powell plays the hobo, actually an affluent Harvard man who has renounced his wealth and become one of the Depression’s ‘forgotten men.’ Despite his pedigree, Powell stays on as the family’s butler, seeing an opportunity to help rich and poor alike – and gaining an affection for Lombard’s kind-hearted socialite. Sunday, October 19 & Monday, October 20 To Be Or Not To Be Sun at 3:30, 7:30; Mon at 8:00 (1942) dir Ernst Lubitsch w/Lombard, Jack Benny, Robert Stack [99 min] The Holocaust is widely accepted as a subject that does not lend itself to comedy. However, this film, set during the Nazi invasion of Poland, proves that you can find some light even in a dark place. Lombard is Maria Tura, a famous actress in Poland who, along with her delusional husband (Benny) are engaged in a nightly production of Hamlet at the local theatre. One night Maria meets a love-stricken young pilot and the two enter into a secret love affair which is carried out while her husband delivers the famous “To Be or Not to Be” monologue in the play. However, their love is threatened when an undercover Nazi spy infiltrates the theatre and attempts to woo Maria to the side of the Third Reich. Trust us, it’s a comedy. Double Feature! Twentieth Century Sun at 5:30, 9:30; Mon at 10:00 (1934) dir Howard Hawks w/Lombard, John Barrymore [91 min] Oscar Jaffe (Barrymore) is a successful, if conceited, Broadway director. However, when one of his clients, Lily Garland (Lombard) leaves him for the bright lights of Hollywood, all of his success seems to go with her. Down and out, Jaffe boards the Twentieth Century Express and happens upon his former protégé. His attempts to woo her back under his wing for a new show are rebuked as it turns out that Garland has taken on not only Jaffe’s talent, but his tempestuousness as well. It’s a race to see what’s faster: the spitfire dialogue or the streamlined locomotive. PSYCHO FROM TEXAS SWEET SUGAR at 7:30 (1973) dir Michel Levesque w/Phyllis Davis [90 min] Spend your Sunday night locked in a squalid cage with a few dozen sweaty bad girls. Sound like fun? You bet it does! Here's a WIP (Women In Prison) movie that gives the people what they want, and then some. In the U.S. Phyllis Davis was mostly set decoration on bad TV shows, but in Women In Prison movies she was a big star. Her face and figure packed them in at drive-ins and neighborhood theaters throughout the country and you'll see why. With Timothy (Black Heat) Brown as Mojo and some of the most pointless human experiments ever conducted. Rated R; Not Available on DVD CHAINED HEAT at 5:00pm The American Islamic Congress is a nonprofit, civic (i.e., not religious) organization that promotes tolerance and the exchange of ideas among Muslims and between other peoples. This October, they will run an enhanced new edition of the film festival around the theme of “ART UNDER FIRE,” with films examining artistic expression in the face of censorship. The festival aims to engage the general public on developments in the Muslim world with free screenings, expert presenters, and live performances. Visit MUSLIMFILM.ORG for more information. And when just one can be elected class president, you can bet that tensions run high. But this great documentary is not just about the drama – although there is plenty – it’s also filled with some terrific real-life characters. There’s Mike, the political insider, George, the indomitable entrepreneur, Hannah, the charismatic outsider, and Alex, the dark horse. Who will you root for? Check brattlefilm.org for news about special guests! Monday, October 13 Thursday, September 25 Carole Lombard was one of the great actresses of Hollywood’s golden age. Despite the fact that her life was cut tragically short in a plane crash at the age of 32, she starred in some of the most perfect comedies of the ‘30s and ‘40s. Included here are five of the roles that she cherry-picked to star in – using her unique status and patience to choose only the most interesting roles. She worked with only the best – whether it be Alfred Hitchcock in a rare comedic turn or the acknowledged king of comedy Ernst Lubitsch or the hilariously sublime William Powell (with whom she starred in MY MAN GODFREY after they were already married and divorced). Lombard was a one-of-a-kind actress who seemingly had perfect chemistry with all of her co-stars and her good looks belie an intelligence that shines through even when playing the dizziest blondes. We celebrate this wonderful star on the occasion of her 100th birthday! at 5:30, 7:30, 9:45 (+ Sat at 1:30, 3:30); Please note: Sun at 2:00, 8:00, 10:00; Tue & Wed at 8:00, 10:00 (2008) dir Caroline Suh [80 min] Grueling primaries, televised debates, newspaper endorsements, tense runoffs, questions of experience, charges of influence peddling, and considerable schmoozing… Elections don’t get much tougher than this – especially in high school. Welcome to election season at Stuyvesant, NYC’s public high school for gifted students. at 11:00am (1959) dir Yasujiro Ozu w/Masahiko Shimazu, Koji Shidara [93 min] This hilarious Technicolor re-working of his silent I Was Born, But… is legendary Japanese director Yasujiro Ozu’s most engaging, accessible and entertaining film. GOOD MORNING (Ohayo) is the story of two young boys in suburban Tokyo who take a vow of silence after their parents refuse to buy them a television set. Shot from the perspective of the petulant brothers, GOOD MORNING is an enchantingly satirical portrait of family life that gives rise to gags about romance, gossip, and the consumerism of modern Japan. Harvard Book Store and Brattle Film FDn Present Sponsored by the New York Review Of Books and The Guardian America Repertory Series! WILD PUSSYCAT Double Feature! at 3:45pm (1953) dir Morris Engel w/Richie Andrusco, Richard Brewster [80 min] Engel’s remarkable verité-style is widely regarded as one of the most influential and enjoyable films of the American independent cinema. LITTLE FUGITIVE is an utterly charming fable that poetically captures the joys and wonders of childhood. When seven-year-old Joey (Andrusco) is tricked into believing he killed his older brother, he gathers his meager possessions and flees to New York's nether wonderland: Coney Island. Upon and beneath the crowded boardwalk, Joey experiences a day and night filled with adventures and mysteries, resulting in a film that is refreshingly spontaneous and thoroughly delightful. The American Islamic Congress presents Sunday, September 21 THE BOSTON BIKE FILM FESTIVAL at 8:00 (1976) dir John Flynn w/William Devane, Tommy Lee Jones, Linda Hayes [95 min] Screenwriter Paul Schrader must have been going through some pretty dark days in the '70s. First Taxi Driver – which we all know is a great film – then this, which is fairly well known thanks to Quentin Tarantino's enthusiastic proselytizing… But how many people do you know who've actually seen it? It's the story of a Vietnam POW, Major Charles Rayne (Devane), who comes home to find his marriage on the rocks and a son who doesn't remember him. When a gang of scumbags take away everything he has left – including his hand – he and his Army buddy Tommy Lee Jones hit the road with enough rage and firepower to destroy a small nation. It sounds great, right? But can it possibly deliver? Can it be as good as it sounds? Yes it can – and it's even better. Devane, Jones and Linda Haynes, as the roadhouse waitress and beauty queen who's almost as dead inside as the major, all give superlative performances under the powerful direction of the late, underrated John Flynn. One day, Lenny plays a practical joke on his little brother and, when the joke goes too far, Joey runs away to Coney Island. Lenny searches for Joey and, as night falls, he fears the worst. Regretting his actions, Lenny becomes more and more desperate to find his little brother – alive and unharmed. This update of Morris Engel’s landmark 1953 film is set in present day Brooklyn. Pirates menace a Huguenot community on a Caribbean isle because the renegades’ eyepatch-wearing captain Christopher Lee believes the village has a secret treasure of gold. The community leader’s son (Kerwin Mathews, of The 7th Voyage Of Sinbad), who has been sentenced to hard labor for adultery (after losing his paramour to a river full of piranha!), may be their only hope for salvation. – notes from the American Cinematheque FRONTRUNNERS Fri & Sat at 7:00 (+Sat at 1:45); Sun at 4:00 (1959) dir Hitchcock w/ Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Martin Landau [136 min] Hitchcock’s landmark movie finds Grant mistaken for a spy and propelled into a cross-country chase across cornfields and the slippery visages of Mount Rushmore, with a very attractive Eva Marie Saint sometimes at his side and a menacing James Mason and Martin Landau always over his shoulder. Always a crowd-pleaser, NORTH BY NORTHWEST remains one of Hitchcock’s most purely enjoyable films. Sunday, September 14 THE RETURN OF THE KING Exclusive Area Premiere! Friday, September 12 – Sunday, September 14 North By Northwest The Little Fugitive at 11:00am (1931) dir F.W. Murnau w/Mathai, Anna Chevalier; Cinematography by Robert Flaherty [82 min] Filmed entirely in Tahiti, TABU represents an unusual collaboration between legendary directors F.W. Murnau (Nosferatu, Sunrise) and Robert Flaherty (Nanook of the North). Two lovers are doomed by a tribal edict decreeing that the girl is “tabu” to all men. While the lovers' flight from judgment and the ultimate power of the tabu are reminiscent of Murnau's expressionist films, TABU is all open air and sunlight, sparkling on the ocean and glistening on the beautiful young bodies of the native men and women. Now available completely uncensored and restored by UCLA, this cinematic landmark is one of the most gorgeous black and white films ever made, and was the 1931 Academy Award winner for Best Cinematography. Celebrate Int’l Talk Like A Pirate Day! New 35mm Print! Repertory Series! Please see below for full line-up and schedule. TABU [223 min] Sat at 8:00pm; Sun at 3:15pm Wednesday, October 1 – Thursday, October 9 We admit that one of the great allures of programming a series of exploitation movies is looking over all the fabulous titles. I mean, how can you go wrong with DEATH LAID AN EGG, BLOOD FREAK, or DON’T GO IN THE HOUSE! But the real surprise comes when the films far surpass any ideas evoked by their oh-so-evocative names. When faced with the daunting task of putting together the cream of this spectacularly bizarre crop, we turned to the expert, enlisting the aid of the Alamo Drafthouse’s maestro of mayhem, Lars Nilsen. Lars has been programming the legendary Drafthouse’s ‘Weird Wednesday’ program for seven years and we truly believe that he has left no stone unturned in discovering the strangest, most provocative, and downright entertainingly sleazy films in cinematic history. This series flies between micro-genres from women-in-prison, to slasher horror, to Euro-sleaze, to the full range of ‘sploitations (blax-, teen-, hick-, nun-, etc). We entreat you not to miss this extremely rare occasion to witness these surreal masterpieces in their bigscreen glory. As an added treat Lars will be joining us for select screenings to intro some of his favorite films from the program! The Brattle Film Foundation and The W.E.B. (2008) dirs Robb Moss, Peter Gallison [86 min] Harvard professors Moss and Gallison deliver this thoroughly engaging documentary about the history of government secrecy in the United States. Using a combination of interviews, archival and artistic footage and interweaving multiple storylines, SECRECY paints an at-times disturbing picture that still manages to touch compellingly on all sides of the issue. Though an emphasis is put on the damage done by and consequences of keeping secrets, there is considerable attention given to the benefit of the various ‘Alphabet Agencies’ and the sensible use of the Top Secret stamp. Touching on events from the military incidents that helped to create many of the laws governing state secrets to Pearl Harbor to 9/11, Guantanamo, Iraq and beyond, SECRECY’s strength lies in its ability to combine facts and figures with dramatic stories and characters – notably military lawyer Lt. Cmdr. Charles Swift who successfully defended Gitmo prisoner Salim Hamdan. Saturday, September 13 Double Feature! at 9:30pm (1983) dir Paul Nicholas w/Linda Blair, Sybil Danning, Tamara Dobson, Stella Stevens, John Vernon [95 min] This is pure women-in-prison exploitation with all the catfights, steamy shower scenes and deviant sexuality you can handle. Maybe more! Linda Blair plays the new fish on the cellblock. With ubiquitous '80s Amazon Sybil Danning and late Cleopatra Jones star Tamara Dobson as warring inmates. Kinky Stella Stevens cracks the whip as the captain of the guards and scuzzy John Vernon plays the warden (who has a hot tub in his office). Others may disagree but I think this is a great first-date movie (but be sure to bring enough for her cabfare home just in case). Either she'll love it or she'll flee. What better way to separate the wheat from the chaff? After all, who wants to get stuck with a good girl? Rated R at 7:30pm (1981) dir Jim Feazell w/John King III, Tommy Lamey [94 min] Already a cult favorite among the most discriminating hicksploitation connoisseurs. This is a cheap, sleazy slice of lone-star low-life. The titular psycho, Wheeler, is one of the most memorable characters in (bad) filmdom. John King III should have at least gotten an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of the sadistic, mommyobsessed kidnapper with the weird laugh. Wheeler's right hand man, Slick, is great too. His trademark phrase is "Now I got yo ASS!" Gotta love it. So if you crave great scummy dialogue, Kmart fashions, mean rednecks, continuity lapses, incongruous BOING sound effects, long long chase scenes, backwoods country cuties, a theme song that won't leave you alone and so much more, then be sure to be here or we'll give Wheeler and Slick your home address. Rated R; Absolutely Not Available on Video SNAKES Double Feature! at 9:30pm (1974) dir Art Names w/Les Tremayne [83min] Total madness! It's a rural gothic snake-revenge movie that's oh so much more. A demented old kook named Snakey operates a reptile farm in the middle of nowhere. Through a bizarre chain of events, he becomes unhinged and kills off half the town with his trained snakes. We've seen all that a million times. But what makes SNAKES extra special is all the perverse little sick touches. For example, the prim local schoolmarm uses Snakey as a reptile pimp for her sick sex thrills, the brother and sister grocers seem to have an incestuous relationship, Snakey likes to strip his victims down to their underwear and best of all, John Philip Sousa marches blare throughout the movie like some sort of demented leitmotif. It's incredible! Rated R; Not Available on DVD Tues, October 21 & Wed, October 22 Mr. & Mrs. Smith Tue at 7:30; Wed at 9:45 (1941) dir Alfred Hitchcock w/Lombard, Robert Montgomery [95 min] Mr. Smith (Montgomery) and Mrs. Smith (Lombard) have rules in their marriage, including never leave a room angry and that once a month they ask a question which the other must answer completely honestly. Unfortunately for him, this time when his wife asks if he would marry her again, David answers with a completely honest “no”. As luck would have it, later that day a town official stops by to inform the couple that due to a boundary dispute they are not officially married. Thanks to David’s thoughtless response earlier, Ann leaves him for another man and David must attempt to win her back with a variety of hapless antics. This film begs the question, is honesty really the best policy? An uncharacteristically romantic comedy from the master of suspense. Nothing Sacred Double Feature! Tue at 5:45, 9:30; Wed at 8:00 (1937) dir William A. Wellman w/Lombard, Fredric March [77 min] It’s Technicolor screwball comedy as Wally Cook (March), a disgraced New York reporter is sent to Vermont to interview Hazel (Lombard), a woman who has been diagnosed with a fatal case of radium poisoning. However, Wally finds Hazel in tears not because of her imminent death, but because she has been told that she’s going to live. Mistaking her tears, Wally brings her to New York where she is heralded as an inspiration and even given the ole ticker tape parade. New York loves her, that is, until the mayor finds out the truth about her condition and decides to go to extremes to cover up the mistake. THE BRATTLE FILM FOUNDATION, inc.
