August 2018 - 54th SDC International – Seattle/Tacoma, WA 3 From The Editor’s Desk… If you have not paid your $15.00 annual dues in the year 2016, they are due now. It is very important for the survival of the chapter that we have operating funds for the coming year. The instructions for paying your dues by mail or through PayPal appear on the last page. The “Never Never” Notchback Avanti These two Avanti-influenced prototypes, a fastback (left) and notchback (right), were built by 1962 for possible production in 1964. The cars were built by Pichon-Parat of Paris, and their Avanti lineage is obvious. As you can see in the first photo Loewy visited the factory and is posing next to the notchback model. He is smiling, but we doubt that he could have been very pleased with the results. In the end, it did not matter as sales figures from the spring of 1963 cast doubt on the project, and even Egbert admitted that an all-new car for 1964 was impossible. Needless to say, these cars were never put into production, but the steel-bodied prototypes survived. Canadian Concourse d' Elegance By Dick LeRoux Michael Moore is the Director of Automobile Selection of the Canadian Concourse d' Elegance/Luxury and Supercar Weekend. He contacted Club Avanti Northwest looking to invite Avanti owners, to display their cars at The Canadian Concourse this year. The event was held on the weekend of the September 10th & 11th in Vancouver, BC. They featured the 1963 and 1964 Avanti's. We won The Shaughnessy Award sponsored by Hagerty. The red 1964 R-2 won best in show. The Turquoise 1963 belongs to Barney Vinegar. He had never opened the glove compartment until Sunday the 11th. It was a great time with five examples of the Studebaker Avanti on the concourse show field. My lovely wife Judy with “Mr. Studebaker from Canada”, Barney Vinegar! Club Avanti Northwest Officers Lou Cote' - President Dennis Adams - Membership Secretary Mary West - Director Steve Dowling - Director Bob Bryant - Director Warren Cortesi - Director Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee is a comedy web series created, directed and hosted by comedian Jerry Seinfeld and distributed by the digital network Crackle. The series premiered on July 19, 2012 and most recently aired its seventh season. Episodes feature Seinfeld introducing a vintage car selected for a guest comedian, followed by a drive to a pre-selected café or restaurant for coffee. Episodes diverge from the format spontaneously, as when Michael Richards implores Seinfeld to take a side street, when Seinfeld returns after coffee with Carl Reiner to join him for dinner with Mel Brooks—or when car trouble arises. As of May 2015, the series had been streamed nearly 100 million times. The show's eighth season premiered on June 16, 2016. It has been renewed for a ninth season. We are proud to have AOAI Member Michael Epstein’s beautiful 1964 Studebaker Avanti featured in one of this season’s best episodes!
