Local Lingo
When you visit Fairfield you are exposed to different
ideas, lifestyles and viewpoints. Many will be novel, even
to those from cosmopolitan, urban areas. To help you
with your visit we have created a glossary of some of
these terms. Never fear mispronouncing words here;
many of us don’t always get it right either! If you hear a
word you don't understand, just ask.
Vedic (vay dick) - Deriving from the Vedas, an oral
tradition of knowledge many thousands of years old, as
in Vedic City or Vedic Observatory. The Vedas include
knowledge of many aspects of life such as:

Come explore our recreational trail system. When
complete, a 33-mile trail system will connect parks,
lakes, and a state preserve. Pass through prairies,
woodlands, wetlands, old railroad corridors, over
major bridges, and more. Enjoy walking, jogging,
biking and x-country skiing in the winter. Don’t
forget bird watching on our trails with over 100
species to catch sight of!
• Located 2 miles from Downtown
• 24 camp sites
• 2 cabins
Open May 1 through October 31 and includes:
Electricity, modern restrooms, hot showers, drinking water,
a small shelter house, playground equipment and a
trailer waste-dump station are all provided for the
camper. Camping fees modest.
Note for all camping areas:
• Camping fees shall be collected daily in
the amount set by the conservation board.
•
No person shall camp in any designated
camping area for a period longer than 14
consecutive days and, in no event, longer than
14 days in any 21-day period.
Water Trails
Looking to canoe, kayak, swim, study nature, or fish?
The Skunk River, Cedar Creek and Fairfield’s 3 lakes
give you ample opportunities to enjoy water recreation, including boating and swimming.
At present, there are two designated water trails:
• The 72-mile-long Skunk River Water Trail traverses
Keokuk, Washington, Jefferson and Henry
counties. The Jefferson County section is 10.5
miles long.
• The Cedar Creek Water Trail uses about 6 miles of
a scenic section of Cedar Creek.
Sorry, no skateboarding, horses or motorized vehicles allowed on trails.
